Jung Hoseok and Christmas Commotions
“Say cheese!”
“Why the fuck would I say that.”
“Yoongi, come on, just smile for the picture-”
“But why do I have to say cheese? That’s so-”
*FLASH*
“Oh no, mini-Yoongi is going to be frowning in the picture,” Hoseok pouted, shaking the magical Polaroid around.
“Mini-Yoongi?” Jin laughed.
“Yeah, the little picture version of him. He’ll make the rest of mini-us upset.”
“I’m sure all of mini-us will be fine,” Namjoon said while sitting down next to Hoseok on a pillow. “He’s always frowning, and normal-sized-us still are okay.”
“True!” Hoseok stopped shaking the picture and kept it against the floor, letting the dark light develop it. “Thanks again Jin for the camera, such a cool gift!”
“No problem,” Jin responded with a warm smile. “I know you always talk about muggle cameras, so this can be second best.”
“First best actually,” Jimin responded across the room, where he was playing with Jungkook’s mini-Quidditch planning set that Namjoon had gifted. “Moving pictures have to be better than non-moving pictures.
“Both are equally cool,” Jungkook responded.
Hoseok rolled his eyes, laying down on the soft ground. The dinner feast started in an hour, so they had plenty of time to relax. So far, the Christmas gift exchange was going well. Hoseok had worried that he and Jin would make things awkward (seeing as they’ve only been hanging out with everyone for a month), but the other boys made them feel welcome. Even Yoongi, who hadn’t glared or made a snide comment to Jin for the entire get together.
After Taehyung and Yoongi had their secret discussion, they revealed that they were taking everyone to the room of requirement. Hoseok was thrilled. He was a Prefect, and he loved it, but it often meant he was too busy to explore the castle on his own. When he was a second year he went looking for it, but he didn’t really have a reason to find it, so he never did. But now? Now he could say he finally got to go in it.
Today, the room chose to be extra warm and cozy for the seven boys. The floor was covered in plush patterned rugs, with massive clumps of pillows thrown everywhere. The space itself wasn’t very big, but that was okay, since the boys weren’t really in the mood for running around. There was a big fireplace on the back wall, and its fiery heat overpowered the cool air that radiated off of the floor to ceiling windows. Since it was December, there was at least a foot of snow on the ground, and more was falling. The room itself was a picture perfect hang out.
Hoseok wondered to himself if Dawon ever had been in this room. She claimed she saw it once in her fifth year, but she never told him if she went inside. He’d have to ask her after dinner, since neither of them were going home this Christmas. Their parents decided to spend their holidays back home in South Korea, and neither of the Jung siblings wanted to take an entire month of school off for the trip.
“Have your parents written recently?” Hoseok turned towards Jin.
“Pfff. I’ve been avoiding it,” Jin admitted, fidgeting with the fancy feather pen Jungkook got him. “Ever since my fight with Seok Jung, they keep telling me to reconcile and start going back to DADA classes.”
“You seriously haven’t been to one since?” Yoongi asked from his pillow nest.
“Couldn’t bring myself to look at him.”
“He’s definitely. . . different since your fight,” Namjoon said. “He’s toned down his course material, it’s more defensive. Quite basic, actually.”
“More like boring,” Yoongi droned.
“I’d rather it be boring and basic than promoting death dueling,” Jin argued.
“Nothing bad ever happened-”
“Yoongi, you literally were almost blasted to pieces by Solar. She dented the floor and blew apart a wall.”
“Like I was trying to say, nothing bad ever happened to someone. School damage is predicted. The house elves will handle it.” Hoseok didn’t miss how Taehyung overheard that comment from across the room. He understood, it was definitely a culture shock for muggle born children when they enter the wizarding world. He was sad to say he’s become desensitized to it all, and Yoongi’s comments and ideas on the elves didn’t phase him. The elves seemed happy, so Hoseok was fine with it.
“Still Hyung, you need some DADA background. How else will you pass your O.W.L.?” Namjoon asked.
“I’ll just, uh, find a tutor?” Jin looked around the room, and his eyes landed on Yoongi. “You’re good at it. You can teach me.”
“No.”
“Yes.”
“Absolutely not.”
“Absolutely yes.”
“No.”
“I’m your Hyung, do it.”
“Or else what?”
Jin stared Yoongi down, and Hoseok wondered what they were having a silent debate over. Jin never told him that he had beef on Yoongi, so what did he have over him?
“Fine.” Hoseok gasped, Jin must have really good dirt on Yoongi to blackmail him into saying yes. Jin was pumping his fists into the air when Yoongi added, “But I won’t teach you book stuff.”
“That book-stuff is 90% of the O.W.L.” Namjoon added.
“Why won’t you teach me all of it?” Jin asked, tugging on Yoongi’s sleeve.
“Cuz I don’t wanna.”
“Liar,” Namjoon said.
“Fine. I don’t know the book stuff. I’m winging it.”
“Terrible strategy,” Namjoon whispered to himself.
“Well who is supposed to know the book stuff anyway!?” Jin yells.
“Everyone should,” Namjoon stated. “I’ve already started preparing for my O.W.L.’s next year.”
“Wait, so you know the book stuff?”
“Of course, I need to have as much time as possible to-”
“Perfect! You’re my book teacher, Yoongi is my physical teacher! Yoongi, I know you have free time on Wednesdays and Friday before lunch, so we’ll meet then, and Namjoon when are you available?”
Namjoon had stopped talking, and Hoseok giggled behind his hand. Namjoon was so overwhelmed and confused he couldn’t answer.
“Joonie and I both had one of our class blocks canceled on Tuesdays and Thursdays every week, the time right after lunch. That work for you Hyung?” Hoseok asked, speaking for poor Namjoon who was still unsure what just happened.
“Yes, that’s great! We can meet in a classroom on the second floor near the-”
“Wait!” Namjoon finally found his voice. “I can’t teach you! You’re a year above me!”
“So? You know the material. Hoseok tells me how smart you are in all of your classes, so it’ll be great. We can start after the break!”
Yoongi rolled his eyes and fell over on his side, pretending to sleep. Namjoon did the exact opposite and started pacing the length of the room.
“I think you broke Joon,” Hoseok whispered to Jin.
“He’ll be fine. I need a teacher.”
“Use your brother. It’s his literal job.”
“Why use Seok Jung when I can have a cute fourth year do it?”
“Joon? Cute?”
“The dimples do it for me.”
“Whatever Jin, just make sure you actually study, I don’t want to find you making out with someone in an empty classroom again.”
“That was one time. And he was an exchange student, so I had to make quick moves.”
“Sureeee.”
“Besides, I doubt Namjoon would make out with me anyway. Probably doesn’t know how to even.”
“You could teach him!” Hoseok giggles and Jin makes a face back at him.
“I don’t feel like babysitting, and neither do my grades.”
“I don’t know Hyung, he looks like he could be pretty good at it once he gets some practice, I mean come on! Look at his shoulders, hands, hair-” While Hoseok listed off attributes, both boys turned towards Namjoon, who was still pacing the floor. He paid them no attention and wrung his hands, head down and already mentally making lesson plans. He even stretched his arms out at one point, and his sweater moved up, showing a small peak of his toned stomach.
Both Hoseok and Jin sucked in deep breaths at that.
“Does he work out?” Jin murmured.
“Yes, like twice a week,” Yoongi said, and both boys jumped.
“You were LISTENING?! AND YOU SAID NOTHING?!” Jin yelped.
“What?” Yoongi sat up. “I was sitting right next to you. Sorry if I didn’t want to join the oogling-fest about my best friend.”
“You didn’t hear anything,” Jin hissed. Yoongi raised an eyebrow. “Fine. We’re even.”
“Even?” Hoseok asked, but both fifth years ignored him. Shrugging, Hoseok figured Jin would tell him later, if it was even important.
A bell chimed somewhere in the castle, signaling the time for dinner.
“Come on guys, grab your stuff and let’s go,” Hoseok said. He casted a spell on his pile of presents, waiting by the doors as the other boys followed. The three youngest were the last to leave, scrambling through the door giggling while trying to push each other around.
Looking over the room, Hoseok quickly cast a spell and blew out all the candles. He knew the room could probably take care of itself, but he felt bad for it. Silently sending a spell that dismantled the pillow fort the maknaes made, Hoseok proudly nodded and closed the door. Everyone else had started heading back to their commons to change for dinner, but Taehyung waited for him.
Together they walked back to the Hufflepuff common room, and split up to change. They normally could wear their own clothes to dinners, but Headmistress McGonagall required full robes when they had holiday feasts. Hoseok walked into his dorm, greeting the other boys who were in different states of dressing. He minded his business, putting on a clean sweater and matching robes. He made sure his Prefect badge was shiny, and slipped on his shoes.
Making his way back to his bed, he grabbed his wand and slipped it into his robes. On his bedside table a small cat toy lay forgotten, and Hoseok paused. The cat he had been taking care of for a week last month had gone missing, and he easily could admit to missing the cute thing. It just seemed sad and troubled, Hoseok had been more than happy to offer his bed to the little creature. He didn’t expect to become so attached though, and he missed their late night cuddles.
He could only hope the cat was somewhere else in the castle, safe and maybe happier. Tapping his wand to the side of the toy, it transformed into the chap stick tube it was originally. Slipping it into his pocket, Hoseok left his dorm and met Taehyung in the commons.
Taehyung had changed his hair once again, but this time a striking half red half green split, right down the center of his head. The boy was incredibly proud of that spell, and while Hoseok suspected it was frying his ends, he said nothing. No doubt Taehyung’s muggle parent would love it nevertheless, for she sounded really supportive whenever Tae spoke of her.
Hoseok’s parents were supportive too, but in an unattached way. Taehyung would write constantly to his family, but Hoseok wrote more to his sister who was in Hogwarts than to his parents. He was okay with it though, his parents didn’t dislike him, they just chose to live their own lives. He often wondered what it would’ve been like to have a muggle family who wanted to hear about the wizarding world, but then he’d really think about it. He’d always come to the conclusion that would just be too hard to be the bridge, and he wasn’t prepared for that.
Hoseok was completely satisfied with his corner of the world, especially now that it was getting a little bigger.
As he walked into the Great Hall, he waved at Jin and Jungkook who were far up in the front of the Gryffindor table. Jimin smiled at him, and Yoongi even gave him a little nod when he scanned the Slytherin table. He and Taehyung made sure to pick a spot on the Hufflepuff table so they could be back to back with Namjoon at the Ravenclaw table.
Hoseok never really noticed it, but a lot of students tried to get Namjoon’s attention. They’d sit right next to him, try to make small talk, or even make eye contact, but he was just too in his own world to notice. Even now, he was reading a book, posture bent down, as a pretty Ravenclaw girl in their year kept trying to accidentally bump elbows with him.
Hoseok thought to himself, was Namjoon even gay? He had never asked. Here he and Jin were absolutely stripping the guy with their eyes before, and Hoseok didn’t even know his sexuality.
“Hey, Joon!” Hoseok called, and the boy jumped up from his book, hitting the girl in the chest hard with his arm. She whimpered and scooted away, probably afraid of him now. Namjoon didn’t seem to notice, because he was too busy looking around to see who called him by his favorite nickname.
“Joon! Are you gay?” Hoseok called, and Namjoon’s eyes widened.
“What?”
“I asked if you are gay,” Hoseok repeated. He was leaning closer to hear Namjoon’s answer, and it seemed everyone at the Ravenclaw table was as well.
“Uh, yeah? I think anyway. I don’t really use labels like that.”
“Cool!” Hoseok chirped, and he saw the Ravenclaw boy on Namjoon’s other side do a silent fist punch in the air. Jin was going to have to make moves quickly if he wanted to beat the others to Namjoon, Hoseok thought to himself as he turned to his table.
“Students!” The Headmistress called, getting everyone’s attention. “I’ll keep this brief so we can enjoy this delightful feast before us, but remember to be safe and make good choices this break. Towards the end of our dinner Hogwart’s very own toad choir will be performing, so I expect everyone to stay and cheer them on. Enjoy!”
The tables shimmered and every food imaginable appeared, immediately making the Great Hall smell divine. Hoseok started piling his plate with three different types of ham, while Taehyung elbowed him to reach the fruit. They both began eating until Hoseok saw something only a little away from them.
“Tae, is that. . . is that tteokguk?”
“Mw-haft?” Taehyung said through a mouthful of bread.
“And manduguk? What the-” Hoseok grabbed some of each soup, sipping them. His eyes started watering from the familiar taste, and he swore he could’ve started crying right there. It tasted just like how his grandma made her tteokguk and manduguk.
“They’ve never had Korean food before!” Hoseok smiled.
“Oh yeah, I asked the elves to make some,” Taehyung said.
“But you said you don’t remember food from back home?”
“I don’t, but I wanted to. . . to change some opinions on house elves amongst our friends.” Taehyung pointed his spoon across the room, where Yoongi and Jimin were confusedly eating the soups. They seemed satisfied, and Taehyung beamed.
“Wow Tae, that’s so. . . so forward and brave of you. The elves must really appreciate it.”
“Thanks Hyung!” Taehyung seemed to take Hoseok’s compliment deeply, and went back to finish his food. Not long after, the students in the toad choir got in front of the room while desserts started appearing.
They sang really well, and Hoseok smiled and clapped vigorously after each song. Jin was the leader of the choir, but this year Taehyung was in it too, so now Hoseok had double the reasons to cheer them on. He also made sure to save a bunch of desserts for Taehyung when he came back, no doubt the boy would want to stuff his face with more puddings than he could count.
“Ding dong, ding dong
Cast a Christmas spell
Ding dong, ding dong
Make the Christmas morning bright
Fly high across the sky
Light the Christmas night
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas
Ring the Hogwarts bell
Merry Christmas, Merry Christmas…”
