She suffered, from this past story, from her mother’s mistakes just as other people her age suffered from their parents' past of death eaters. If only it was only that but no, she had a whole other story that she could never forget anything but because of her first name.
Her mother is Marietta Edgecombe and she is unfortunately known by everyone who studied at Hogwarts between 1995 and 1998. Marietta was part of Dumbledore’s army before revealing everything to Ombrage who had cast a spell that does not fade even after all this time. She has now and forever a thousand small dots on the face forming the word «SNEAK» meaning snitch for having dared to tell Ombrage what was to remain confidential.
Years later, when she had her daughter, she did not forget what had happened to her and decided that there was no better name in the world for her daughter than a name meaning fault. Thus his daughter was named Até, Até Edgecombe.*
And even if Até had not been there during the spell, she saw every day of her life the eternal pain of her mother. Até tried to forget, she thought it was no longer relevant but her name was an obstacle to her well-being. She alone was a mistake, a reminder of what had happened.
Some teachers understood the state of despair in which she was, feeling trapped and feeling lost in her despair. Professor Longbottom sometimes told her when he passed her alone in the middle of a silent corridor that she had no choice, that her mother had to choose between her family and friends, and that there was nothing more important than family. Professor Mcgonagall did not have the same speech, error is human we cannot live a perfect life we have not been created so. Minerva Mcgonagall told her to smile, to think about something else but how to forget her name? his existence?
Then there was the hero of the wizard world, the survivor, Harry Potter who had a surprising speech although Marietta Edgecombe had caused him many worries. She was just like him a victim. So how is it to have to survive internally? Do you sometimes feel dark? Had he seriously asked her one day in a corner of the library after visiting his eldest son, she did not know what to answer that day. She didn’t realize that was what it was about, survival.
She was now able to put a name on the look he had when he was talking to her, it is the look of someone who also survived.
She could not forget her first name, but she decided that the only fault she had committed was the one of erasing herself for so many years. Today she learned to smile and laugh and does not intend to remain in her drowning silence. Até Edgecombe is a lot of things a survivor, a loving girl, a smart girl but not a fault.
* Até is the goddess of fault and error in Greek mythology.
