Before The Prank

Slightly earlier when the Potters first arrived at the burrow:

James wanted to find Teddy right away. Something has been itching in his brain since getting on the train and he needed to scratch it. It might have to do with a certain Scorpius Malfoy joining them at the burrow during their family holiday.. James just couldn’t let it go. Hadn’t Albus seen enough of that pointy git at school? Why would he come to the burrow? Unless, unless they’re dating. Yes, the itch he needs to scratch is interfering in his younger brother’s romantic life.

He finds Teddy with Victoire out by the hill they use for quidditch. They’re snogging, as usual. James rolls his eyes and coughs as he approaches, dropping his quidditch gear, and watching as they pull apart when he is steps away.

“Hey Teddy, can I borrow you for a moment,” he said, not meaning it to come out as a statement. Teddy gets up nonetheless and the two boys start walking back towards the burrow.

“What’s up James?”

“Fancy a guess?” James asked with a shrug and a mischievous grin.

“Plotting something are we?” Teddy replied with concern growing in his voice. The older boy definitely enjoyed a good prank once in a while, but something during a family holiday? It seemed a bit too risky.

“It's not like that,” James defended picking up on Teddy’s fears, “Look, it’ll be innocent. All we have to do is approach my brother.”

“By we…you mean me? Don’t you?” Teddy asked for clarification that he gets when James can no longer look him in the eye, “James? Really?! Don’t you think he’s been through enough?”

“Ted. please, just hear me out first, okay?” Teddy rolls his eyes in response but motions for James to continue.

“All you’d need to do is approach him as Scorpius and maybe flirt with him a bit,” James stopped, aware he was losing his audience already, “Come on, don’t you want to know if they’re like secretly dating?”

“Dude, no offense but if they’re secretly dating or whatever, we shouldn’t be getting involved. Why would we want to get involved?” Teddy argued, trying to challenge James’ way of thinking hoping to get through to him.

“Then we help them wherever their relationship stands, secret or not?” James shrugged clearly, not getting the hint.

“Okay, well say I do help you,” Teddy replied attempting to go along with it to show the younger boy how this was a bad idea, “say I do flirt with him and he knows it's me or worse, he thinks I’m the real Scorpius and he tries to kiss me or something?”

“Listen, I’m not trying to make this a crap holiday for him, I just want him to be honest and-”

“James,” Teddy cut in, “he came out a year ago, his romantic life is not our concern.”

“You have a point, it’s just…I’m worried about him, okay?”

“Now you sound like your dad now,” Teddy laughed and James shot him a hopeful look, “Okay okay, I’ll help you. But if this goes to shit it falls back on you.”

“Yes sir! I’ll go find Albus and tell him we need more gear for quidditch. You ambush him when he comes back down the stairs,” James said scurrying off before Teddy can change his mind.
