Always on me
Regulus was sitting at the diner table with plates and glasses prepared for more than an hour. James’ shift was supposed to end at eight. It is almost ten now. The dinner Regulus cooked is cold by now.
He is not angry at James. He knew what he was getting himself into by dating a medical student. He was just excited to have dinner together.
He is reading a book to pass the time when the front door swings open and James stumbles in. His face twists with the guild when he spots Regulus waiting at the table.
“I'm so sorry, Reggie.” he rushes to him. “The shift went late, and my phone died...”
But Regulus stops him. “That is fine, don't worry.” he smiles at him just happy that he is finally here. James brings him in a tight hug, kissing him apologetically.
When he pulls away Regulus is about to say something, but his eyes lie on James’ hand. Specifically on his ring finger. The spot, where supposed to be an engagement ring, is empty.
He freezes because James promised him, he will always have it on him. James seems to sense that something else is wrong, worry written in his eyes.
“What is it?”
“You don't have your ring” Regulus breathes out.
“What-” James starts to say as he looks at his hand. He smiles at him. “Oh, forgot to put it on in the hurry.”
Regulus is still staring at the hand. It shouldn't be a big deal. It's just a ring, nothing more. But apparently, it is going by the disappointment settling in him.
“I can't have it on at work,” James explains and well it makes sense. James nudges him slightly to speak up.
“I just... Well, you said you will always have it on you... Sorry, it's silly. I was just surprised.” Regulus shrugs.
“I do,” James says and pulls out his golden neckless from under his shirt. On the the end is swinging the ring. “I always have it close.”
“Oh.” it's all Regulus manages to say in relief. James places a kiss on his forehead.
“Let's have dinner. You must be starving, and it smells amazing.” James leads him to the kitchen as he slips the ring back on his finger.
