Mary Macdonald
Mary MacDonald.
Mary MacDonald.
Mary MacDonald.
Every time lily opens a book that name will be there, no doubt. Every book has her name stamped on the first page, sometimes she’s even the first name on there. Lily loves reading and spends most of her time doing so, if she isn’t busy practicing her violin. The public library close to her little apartment in London is by far the place she visits the most. So she takes great offense to what she’s seeing. Her name should be on every book and that has been her mission for the past 3 years. Still this girl seems to have beaten her. Lily has spent her entire day searching through the enormous library, trying to find a book left untouched. But no, she had no success.
As she walk back to the entrance of the library she takes a moment for herself to enjoy being there. Reading is not the only reason she comes to the library, although that may sound strange. She never felt quite at peace at home, so she would search everywhere for a place who could bring her comfort. Lucky for her, her hometown had a library and she also spend most of her time there. Her sister used to call her Matilda, but she takes great pride in that, who wouldn’t want to be Matilda?
She is still standing with her eyes closed in the middle of an aisle when she remembers something.
She forgot her violin practice.
Lily had been so caught up in searching she had totally forgotten it and her teacher was probably going to murder her.
As fast as she could she made her way through the library, not running, because that would look embarrassing and she wants the librarian to like her. Running through a library was not going to help that.
It was 16:45, her practice started an hour ago so there was no possibility of making up an excuse and still practicing. Lily curses under her breath, she really doesn’t like to be late, never mind not being there at all.
She isn’t going to make it anymore, so lily decides that she should just go home. It’s for the best.
She has a small apartment in London. Her friend pandora got it for her for a better price than any other apartment because she has a flower shop beneath it. To make some extra money lily works there in the weekends. After school she works at a café with her other friend remus. She got to know him in high school, where they got close after they had been assigned partners for a biology assignment. They had discovered they really liked studying together and continued doing so. They became really close and some rumours had started forming. Then remus got outed by an old friend of lily’s and the rumours stopped.
After high school they had both decided to major in literature, a shared interested and they got accepted into the same university.
When she walk in she sees Pandora trying to get a pot to the other side of the store with a red face.
“Need any help?” Lily asks.
“Got it all under control.” Pandora says strained. She doesn’t really like to ask for help, however she never hesitated to help others. So lily puts down her bag and helps pandora move the pot. Afterwards she thanks her with a smile and lily goes up to her apartment.
When she sits down a the couch with some tea she sees an email from her violin teacher.
“Shit.” Lily curses, it must be more serious than she had thought.
Dear miss Evans,
You didn’t attend our practice today, so I have decided to inform you through email. I have chosen two of my best students for the upcoming performance. This performance will take place in auditorium of the royal academy of music at 15:00 next week Sunday. Be on time.
The other student I have chosen is Mary Macdonald, she will be playing the piano and I will be excepting for one of you to win first place.
My regards,
Minerva Mcgonagall
“No way,” Lily gasps, “Now way!”
Mary Macdonald had not only challenged her in the library, no that wasn’t enough, she had to go for the violin too. She did not even know the girl, but regarded it now as her personal mission to beat her.

“And then I found out she was performing too! Can you believe it? I can’t.”
Lily has been rambling on for god knows how long about a certain girl. Remus and lily are walking on campus after a long study session. Long because lily could not stop thinking about the performance, because for one, she had incredible stage fright. Normally she would be performing for a small amount of people, but this time it was at the royal academy of music. The room was probably going to be filled up entirely. Not to mention that the people she would be performing against would be way better than what she was normally up to. And then Mary.
After an hour she had given up with studying and had begun telling remus what was on her mind. He never really minded, nor did lily when he had something that bothered him, but on this topic his advice had been disappointing.
“Lily honestly, maybe she doesn’t even know you.” Remus says, always there to give you a reality check, which lily does not appreciate at the moment.
“That doesn’t matter at all remus, you don’t see the big picture here.” Lily continues and next to her she can hear remus sigh.
“I’m going to class.” He says as he’s speeding up.
“We are literally in the same class.”
“I know, I just don’t want to be stuck listening to you ramble about this girl you’re obsessed with.”
Lily stands there with an open mouth.
“Traitor.” She mumbles under her breath while catching up to him. But she is not looking and bumps into someone.
“Oh my god, I’m so sorry.” The girl she bumped into says, as she tries to gather together the things that have fallen on the ground.
Lily also apologies profusely. While helping her she picks up on of the notebooks and sees the name on it, written beautifully with curls, not that that matters. She puffs out a breath.
“Mary Macdonald.”
“That’s me.” The girls says cheerfully. “Thanks for helping.”
Lily doesn’t say anything, trying to make the picture in her head fit. She finally has a face to connect to the infamous name. Mary is very pretty, lily has to admit that. She is wearing what seems to be an outfit inspired by the 70’s. Lily knows this, she likes the fashion and music that was made around that time. She once tried to introduce Remus to abba, but to her disappointment, he said he didn’t like pop. She secretly thinks that he does, he probably puts it on at 3 AM and dances in his room like a teenage girl. Mary is wearing denim flared jeans with an orange top and a hairband. She has two really big gold hoops hanging from both ears and is wearing red lipstick.
Lily is too busy with staring, so when she is finally ready to start asking questions Mary has already left.
“Oh remus is going to love this.”
