The Inheritance Test that Changed Everything
Harry’s POV -
AN - Everything is the same until the end of the trip when Hagrid is getting the stone.
“Hey, Griphook,” Harry asks hesitantly. Griphook looks up. “I’m new to the wizarding world, do you have any book recommendations for me to get while I’m shopping for school supplies?”
“Come back later,” is all Griphook said before Hagrid came out of the vault. They ride back up and leave Gringotts.
The duo went shopping for about an hour when Harry said, “Hey Hagrid, why don’t you get a few drinks while I finish shopping? We can meet up at the Leaky Cauldron?”
“You sure ‘arry? You’ve never been ‘ere before.” Hagrid asked, concerned.
“I’ll be fine. Besides, I’ve shopped alone before.” Harry said though that was a lie. Aunt Petunia would never let me shop for anything with her, let alone by myself. I do need to get away from him though. Please, pretty please with a cherry on top, take the bait.
“If you’re sure ‘arry,” Hagrid said and subsequently started to walk towards the Leaky Cauldron. That was too easy, Harry thought. He turned around and went right towards Gringotts. “I’m here to speak to Griphook…”Harry tells the teller, though it sounds more like a question. The teller leads Harry down a hallway and into an office. A gold nameplate tells Harry it's Griphook's office.
“Ah, Heir Potter, a pleasure to see you again. May your gold flow,” Griphook says as he enters the room.
“Nice to see you too?” Harry answers.
Griphook chuckles, though it sounds more like a soft villain cackle, “The correct answer to that would be either ‘may your coffers never empty,’ ‘may the blood of your enemies flow,’ or ‘may your family wealth multiply.’’’
“Oh, in that case, may your coffers never empty, Mr. Griphook.” Harry quickly corrected.
“It's been a quick minute since someone called me Mister. Just Griphook should suffice.” He said.
“Why?” Harry asked. Why would you purposefully disrespect someone who has control over all of your money? That's just stupid.
“Most wizards believe us to be below them and thus unworthy of the respect they give to each other,” Griphook explained.
“Most? Like Headmaster Dumbledore?” Harry questioned.
“Yes, generally, it's the dark wizards who truly respect us. Dumbledore is the worst though. Always demanding us to take money from vaults he does not own. He has also tried several times to take money from your vaults.” Griphook responded.
“Wait, vaults? I thought I just had one.” Harry asked, now thoroughly confused. A growl escaped Griphook's lips as he pulled out a paper and a knife.
“3 drops of blood if you would be so kind,” Griphook said. Harry nicked the tip of his pointer and 3 drops of blood fell onto the paper. Harry cleaned the knife while words on the page appeared.

“I have questions,” Harry started.
“We should first clear you of all of these blocks and compulsions. Then you can ask your questions.” Griphook said. At Harry’s nod, they went to the medical ward. “Healer Ingot, he needs a full cleansing and medical treatment.” Healer Ingot pointed towards a bed and gave Harry a bottle.
“Draught of Living Death, a powerful sleeping potion to help with the ritual.” She explained. Harry drank the potion and his eyelids fell close.
~2 hours later~
Harry woke and slowly sat up, his head spinning. “Heir Potter, how are you feeling?” A voice spoke. It took a minute for Harry to realize that Healer Ingot was asking.
“Was a little dizzy before. Now it's fine.” Harry answered.
“Good, you will look different because the blood glamor was cleansed with the rest of the compulsions and blocks. We also took the liberty to fix your numerous broken bones, cuts, bruises, and eyesight. You will also have much more powerful magic now because ¾ of your core was blocked among other things. I’ll get Griphook, he has your inheritance test with the rest of your abilities unblocked. Would you like a mirror?” Healer Ingot asked.
“Yes, please,” Harry answered. A few minutes later, Healer Ingot returned with a mirror and Griphook trailing behind her.
“Nice to see you alive and well Heir Potter,” Griphook said.
“Nice to see you too,” said Harry. He stared into the mirror. Harry didn’t look too different. He still had dark brown hair, but it was more wavey. It didn’t look like a rat’s nest, so that was an improvement. He still had green eyes but had slightly paler skin.
“Shall we go back to my office?” Griphook asked after a few minutes. With the Healer’s nod of approval, the duo went back to Griphook’s office.
“So, what's with the esteemed lordships and stuff?”
“It's a way of ranking the Lordships based on the previous tier system back when the Pendragons were the royal family. Each rank has a different amount of votes in the Wizengamot. The Royal Family, aka the Pendragons, have 20 votes, but their seat has been dormant since the founding of the Wizengamot,” Griphook explained.
“Why?” Harry asked.
“I’ll explain that in a minute.” Griphook continued. “The Imperial Lordships are the next tier with 8 votes each. Families such as the LeFays, the Emerys, and the Sewlyns are in this tier. I’ll explain why in a minute. The Esteemed Lordships are under them with 5 votes each. You are the heir to most of the houses in this tier. The Ancient Lordships have 3 votes, Noble with 2, and lastly, Lesser Noble Lordships with 1 vote. Speaking of titles, generally, when introducing your self you say the highest-ranking title you have. For instance, you could say ‘I’m Harry Potter, heir to the most ancient and royal family of Pendragon, the most ancient and imperial houses of Peverell, Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, Slytherin, and Hufflepuff, the most ancient and noble house of Black, and the most noble house of Potter,’ or you could simply say ‘I’m Harry Potter, heir to the most noble and royal family of Pendragon.”
“Wait didn’t the test say my name was Hadrian?” Harry asked, confused.
“I’ll get to that in a minute,” Griphook continued. “Now to explain the reason the tier system exists, The Pendragons used to be the royal family. After a while, one of your ancestors quit. All the Imperial Lords complained about how the Pendragons ruled for too long, so naturally, he quit. He and his family moved and left the Imperial Lords the land. They had about a decade of peace before they realized just how hard the job of the previous king had been. Since they couldn’t find the Pendragons, they decided to give the job to the Esteemed Lordships and see how they handled things. The Esteemed Lordships created the Wizengamot. One of the first laws they created was that if the Pendragons ever came back to rule, they could take over. Most people forget that the law exists. They also made other laws ensuring things like the fact that houses lower on the tier list could have a vote and that the laws they created couldn’t be changed by later members. The first 7 laws can’t be changed in any way.” Griphook finished.
“Back to the name thing. There is a difference between your true name and your common name. Your true name is precious and important. Nobody knows it but your account manager, yourself, your parents, and occasionally your godparents.” Griphook explained.
“Can I change my common name?” Harry asked.
“Yes, you can change your common name once every decade or so. You can’t change your true name though. What would you like your common name to be?” asked Griphook.
“I’d like my new name to be Hadrian James Peverell-Potter,” Hadrian said.
“Not Pendragon?” Griphook asked.
“No, from what you said, if I choose the name Pendragon, people will have a bunch of expectations about what I’m supposed to be. By taking a slightly different name, hopefully, people will realize I’m not going to be what they expected.” Hadrian said, carefully explaining his thought process.
“Sure. So there are a few things you need to do before you leave. First off, you have enough titles to be emancipated. I assume you want to be?” Griphook questioned. Hadrian nodded. “Good thing I already filled out the paperwork,” Griphook muttered under his breath. “The next thing to deal with is your Lordship rings. The first one is the Pendragon ring, it's the one to your far right.” Griphook explained as he brought out a box with 8 rings in a row.
“Won’t it be suspicious if I have 8 rings on my hand when I only claim to be of 2 lines? Hadrian asked.
“I would advise you to wear the Peverell and Potter ones openly since they are in your common name. The four founders’ rings will merge into one. You should put a glamor on the others,” Griphook suggested.
“I’ll do that,” Hadrian said.
“Back to what I was saying. The one to your far right is the Pendragon ring. Their motto is ‘Till our enemies are nothing but ash and bones.’ The next one is the Peverell ring. Their motto is ‘To greet death like a friend.’ The one after that is the Gryffindor ring. Their motto is ‘Fortuna fortes adiuvat’ which translates to ‘Fortune favors the brave.’ Next is the Ravenclaw ring. Their motto is ‘Calamus gladio fortior’ which means ‘The pen is mightier than the sword.’ After that is the Slytherin ring. Their motto is ‘Si vis pacem para bellum’ or ‘If you wish for peace, prepare for war.’ The final founders’ ring is the Hufflepuff one. Their motto is ‘Honestas ante gloriam’ which translates to ‘Honesty before glory.’ The one after that is the Black ring. Their family motto is ‘Toujours Pur’, French for ‘Always Pure.’ Last but not least, the Potter ring. Their motto is ‘Puissions-nous vivre des temps intéressants’ which means ‘May we live in interesting times.’” Griphook finished.
“That reminds me. Since you publicly using the name of an Esteemed Lordship, people will roll their right sleeve up as a sign of respect. When you see this happening, just nod your head. This will only happen during formal events or somewhat formal events such as Wizengamot sessions, balls, and the entrance and exit feasts at Hogwarts. This will also tell you who is following the old ways.” said Griphook. Hadrian tilted his head in curiosity. “I don’t know why they do it, but they do. Another thing that lords do is hide their emotions. All lords are expected to hide their emotions as they are only shown privately.”
“Oh, thanks for the heads up. At least now I won’t make a fool of myself.” Hadrian said. Thinking momentarily, he asked, “Are there any places close to London that I own?”
“There is the Black townhouse, #12 Grimmauld Place,” Griphook responded.
“Oh, thanks!” Hadrian said. “Why is Headmaster Dumbledore my magical guardian?”
“What do you mean why?” Griphook asked.
“Why is the headmaster of Hogwarts my magical guardian?” Hadrian asked.
“Since you were born in the magical world but are growing up in the muggle world, he was supposed to prepare you for taking over your lordships.”
“Really? I’ve never heard of him til Hagrid told me about him,” Hadrian commented.
“I’ll also need to do an accounting on your vaults. Since you’re an emancipated minor, you could sue him for neglect because he didn’t teach you anything.” Griphook explained.
“Sure do whatever. Also, yeah, let's sue him,” Hadrian said.
“May the blood of your enemies flow,” Griphook said.
“May your coffers never empty?” Hadrian said questioningly.
“It works as a hello and a goodbye,” explained Griphook.
“Oh,” Hadrian waved to Griphook and left Gringotts.
In a new world, with a new name, this is going to be interesting. Hadrian thought to himself.
