Chapter 1
Regulus awoke to the sound of his door creaking. He was a light sleeper. After all, one had to be in this house. Still, Regulus did not stir, not wanting to draw the attention of whoever was intruding into his room. He did peek his eyes open slightly to see who it was. As soon as he saw he knew exactly what was going on. His big brother, the person he loved and counted on most, was leaving. Leaving him, Regulus, behind. Alone in the house that killed them both.
Regulus's stomach clenched up. He felt like crying or puking. He knew this was going to happen sooner or later. Sirius always talked about running away, leaving this godforsaken house behind; and their parents to rot away in it. Several times, he had suggested Regulus come with him. Regulus refused every time. Not just because he was a coward, but also because he knew if he went their parents would go looking for them. AS long as Regulus stayed and became the perfect Black heir, Sirius could escape and live his life freely. No matter how cowardly he felt he was, Regulus would always do his best to protect his big brother.
As Sirius got closer, Regulus closed his eyes, not wanting him to know he was awake. Regulus heard the window slide open but nothing more. Regulus squinted his eyes open to see if Sirius had left. He had not. Sirius was standing by the open window looking down at Regulus sadly. His heart stuttered slightly when he realized Sirius did indeed know he was awake. Before Regulus could say anything Sirius spoke up, "Come with me Reggie".
"You know I can't, Sirius", Regulus choked out.
Sirius looked at him with sad eyes and said, "I know". And then he walked over to Regulus, bent down, kissed him on the forehead and said, " I love you Regulus". And then Sirius slipped out of the window, leaving Regulus alone and taking his heart with him.
