Lily Evans loved her friends, she adored them really. James with his personality so big and bold, and Sirius with laughter that was contagious. Remus with his dark mysterious looks and book and peter with his love of herbology and animals. She loved Dorcas with her dark liner and pretty braids, and Regulus with his god complex and richeous fury. Marlene with her kindness and ability to always see the bright side, pandora with her gentle ways and love of everything. Then in a category all of her own there was Mary.
Lily loved Mary in a different way, in an all consuming way, in a way that put everything else to shame. She loved Mary, loved her more than the air she breathed. She had always felt this way, she had always been attracted to girls and when her sister had found out, well it was just another reason to call her a freak. Mary with her soft laugh, brown hair and blue eyes. Mary with her gentle hands and shy smile. Mary with her love of classical music and spanish poetry.
Lily loved Mary, there had never been any doubt in her mind. She loved her friends, she even loved Severus before he had become someone she didnt recognise, but Mary was different.
She had loved her quietly from the sidelines, always the bridesmaid and never the bride. Lily was a wallflower, she liked to read and she liked to study and she liked to watch when others werent looking. She had never really been brave, not when it comes down to it, not with her heart. She had hidden it away in the vines of her flowers even though it was stamped with one name. Mary.
Tonight she had decided she was going to be brave.
She had put on her favourite black dress, and laced up her heels and she was walking with a purpose to the Slytherin Common room where the party was. She was determined even as she slowed infront of the dungeon, she was afraid.
Whats the worst that can happen lily? she says no and you go back to being best friends? get your act together youre a goddamn gryffindor for petes sake
she thought to herself, before whispering the password and stepping inside.
It was loud, the music was loud, the people were loud, the lights were loud.
She was standing with Dorcas, dorcas who knew everything. She was drinking some kind of punch, and smoking something probably from peter.
She was beautiful.
thats all lily could think as she approached the table.
Her hair was in a ponytail, brown curls falling down her back, she had a red dress on that brought out the blue in her eyes. Dorcas had clearly done her makeup because that eyeliner would be the death of lily. Mary was all curves and impossibly touchable skin, boots that came up to her thighs with heels that would put her a foot taller than Lily.
She was laughing, showing all those perfect teeth and Lily wanted. She wanted them to sink into her throat and pull out all the words shes been dying to day letter by letter.
"Lily you made it!" Dorcas squeals
"I did" She answers, she takes a drink from Dorcases outstretched hand and then runs her eyes over Mary.
She is beautiful, but with this lighting behind her she looked like something otherworldly.
"See something you like lily?" Dorcas whispered in her ear. She rolled her eyes. Dorcas knew, she knew right from the beginning how she felt. She'd kept her secrets, shed held her hand but tonight when she looked at Dorcas, she saw in those green eyes understanding.
She knocked the drink back in one, and then stole whatever Mary was smoking.
"Its petes stash lils, its strong" Mary giggled. Her voice like the bells ringing in a church, harmonious and wonderful and perfectly pitched.
Lily took a drag, holding it in her lungs before exhaling and beginning again.
"Better slow down there eh lily?" Dorcas asked but there was no hiding the glimmer in her eyes.
Mary looked concerned, but Lily didnt care, she passed the joint back and then stole Marys drink right from in her hand.
2 mouthfulls and the drink was empty.
"I was drinking that you know. What has got into you lily?" Mary asked, half amused
"Well actually" Lily leaned into her personal space "I was hoping you would"
There it is, the first move lily thought, watching the other girls eyes widen. She could see the cogs turning in her head.
"Are you drunk?" Mary asked. She shook her head.
"What" Mary began but lily cut her off, hand over her mouth.
"Im not drunk yet, im not high yet, but what i am is shooting my shot." She muttered before moving her hand to behind Marys neck and yanking her down to eye level.
Without giving herself a chance to back out if it Lily pressed her lips to Marys, gentle and breif. When she moved away, mary held her gaze, she watched every emotion roll through her eyes like a tidal wave. Confusion to lust.
Then all at once the tables were turned. Mary backed her up against the wall, hands settling on her waist as she looked down, eyes dipping lower to what Lily was wearing, the painted red of her lips and that right then was when she knew the feelings shed been harbouring were reciprocated.
Mary leant down and devoured her. Teeth and lips and tongue, her hands a painful grip on her waist and lilys in Marys hair, yanking it free from the ponytail. When they broke apart theyvwere gasping, their lipstick smudged, forheads pressed together.
"This would of been easier without the heels" Mary mutters,
"But the heels are hot" Lily retorts.
She takes her hand and pulls her away from the party, back up to the common room where they can be heard giggling throughout the schoolcas they made their way to bed.
