A night under the stars
Pearlescent Moon was a gifted child. Her ability to pick up on things was remarkable, resulting in her speaking like an eight year old at the age of three and being able to levitate objects with her hands when she saw her mother doing it.
On top of that she was a menace. She was part of the Dreamslayer family after all!
Her mother, Violette Dreamslayer, was the older sister of Azure Dreamslayer (Grian and Taurtis’s father) and younger sister of Sage Littlewood (Martyn’s mother), making her a cousin of Martyn and Grian.
Of course she was the one whose mother wanted to keep the colour names intact (her grandparents being Grayson and Sienna Dreamslayer). While Martyn, Taurtis and Grian got normal names, she got Pearlescent.
No one called her that though, she stuck by Pearl which was doable in her eyes.
She, as part of the Dreamslayer family, of course inherited some of the mischievous qualities the Dreamslayer’s were well known for. That and her being a gifted child did not mash well.
Luckily she found someone who was able to hold her back a bit in Hufflepuff Gem. Her being a pureblood had nothing to do with it of course, but her family, despite not being as fanatic about purebloodness, considered that a plus.
On top of that, it made Martyn joining the auror department all the more easier, as Gem’s mother, Tucana Black, was head of said auror department.
But Pearl’s friendship with Gem was not based on all of that. She would never exploit the slightly younger Hufflepuff, she would cherish her with her life.
They met on the train to Hogwarts. Pearl had been late, as usual, and did not find an empty compartment. So when she found a tiny red haired fellow first year, Pearl made the decision to join her. With Gem’s permission of course.
“Hi, is there still some room for me?” Pearl asked as she peeked her head through the door of the compartment Gem was sitting in.
“Yeah, of course,” the redhead smiled kindly and a bit excited. “I’m Gemini Tay, but just Gem is fine.” Pearl shook her hand.
“Nice to meet you Gem, I’m Pearlescent Moon. Pearl is fine though!” she laughed and Gem did as well.
“Why do our parents have to give us the worst names possible?” Gem brought out, “I mean, I know it’s not the worst ‘cause my cousins' names are Skizzelian and Impulrian, but ours is not far off either!”
“Skizzelian and Impulrian?! Please tell me they don’t go by that,” Pearl giggled and Gem shook her head. “No, they go by Skizz and Impulse. They’re both Hufflepuffs! Skizz is a fourth year and Impulse a second year.” Pearl nodded along, she had heard some stories of Hogwarts from Martyn and Taurtis, she believed Taurtis was in the same year as Skizz.
“My cousins were both Slytherins, Martyn graduated last year and is now trying to be an auror and Taurtis is in the same year as Skizz.” She happily explained to Gem.
“Oh that’s so cool! My mother is head of the auror department, so I might be able to arrange something if he would like that.” Pearl perked up at that. “Yeah, that would be cool! I’ll owl him.”
The rest of the train ride was them talking about everything and nothing. From then on they stuck together like glue. It did not even matter that they got sorted into separate houses and the commonrooms of Hufflepuff and Slytherin were so close together that they just ended up waiting for the other before breakfast and classes.
Pearl smiled fondly at the memory of her and Gem meeting. She was in her second year now, she had found her place within the walls of Hogwarts, figuratively and literally.
It was the astronomy tower she felt… well not the safest, but the calmest. After a long day of school she would hang out here, do her homework and just relax.
Gem knew this, she would sometimes join her even.
They helped each other with the things they struggled with, which was herbology for Pearl and transfiguration for Gem, and talked the night away. It was a peaceful place already so full of memories.
However this night her peace would be disturbed.
She had been lying on the floor as usual, staring at the sky above her and the Hogwarts grounds below her. But instead of the usual quietness, she suddenly heard a voice behind her.
“Peaceful, isn’t it?” Pearl quickly turned around to see the ghost of an elderly man with an impressive beard standing behind her.
“It is?” she answered uncertainly.
“You’re able to see a lot from here,” the ghost continued, “Not like you don’t see a lot anyway.” Pearl frowned, what was he trying to say?
“There are a few that are able to see more than others, little Moon. But it won’t necessarily be a good thing,” and just as Pearl wanted to respond, he vanished.
Okay, that was weird. She had never seen that ghost before, but she shrugged it off as another ‘Hogwarts thing’ and moved on with her life.
That is until merely two weeks later.
She and Gem were sat studying together in the Astronomy tower when it happened.
It started out as an annoying headache, followed by lightheadedness and dizziness. She wanted to tell Gem of this, but was not even able to complete her sentence when she got sucked into a black void, full of stars.
“Hey Gem, I’m getting a heada…-” Suddenly all she could see was black.
Pearl squinted her eyes and was able to make out some shapes that got clearer by the second.
There were four men and a woman. Two of them were facing each other, one had their wand raised at the other. She did not recognise that one, she however did recognise the other; it was professor Dumbledore.
They said something, but she was not able to figure out what. Then the woman circled the two, edging the one with the wand on with hissing sounds. It was Bellatrix Black, Gem's distant family.
Another man was crouched behind the staircase and another man, professor Snape, passed by him, raising a finger at him to shush him and walked up the stairs.
Then professor Snape pushed the one with the wand away and casted a green light that struck Dumbledore right between his ribs.
Dumbledore fell off the tower and Pearl screamed, leaning over the edge to see him fall and the moment his body hit the ground, in all the wrong angles, she woke up.
Gem was shaking her with a concerned look on her face.
“Pearl, Pearl! Whatever is happening, it’s not real. You’re okay, we’re okay. Come on, wake up!” Pearl shook her head as if to shake away the image of Dumbledore’s body on the ground.
“Oh Merlin's pants, Pearl! What happened?!” Pearl could not answer, she was still in shock.
“Okay, that’s it. I’m bringing you to the Hospital wing,” Gem concluded and hauled Pearl up, “Can you walk?” Pearl nodded, everything around her sounded muted, so she had to strain her ears to hear Gem.
She did not remember much from the talk to the Hospital, only that it was a long one, as the Astronomy tower was on the other side of the castle. But they made it.
Xisuma immediately came running towards them and took Pearl to an empty bed.
“What happened?” he asked Gem worriedly as he began checking Pearl's reaction speed, which was not very fast.
“I don’t know! She wanted to tell me something and then she just fell quiet, so I looked over to ask why she wasn’t continuing and that’s when I saw her staring off into the distance. At first there was nothing wrong, but she was not reacting to what I was saying, so I figured that there had to be something wrong,” Gem ranted and Xisuma guided her to a chair for her to settle down.
“And then she started shaking and screaming and I panicked, so I tried to get her out of wherever she was. Which I know was not a good idea, but she looked like she was in pain and I didn’t know what else to do!” Gem sighed and Xisuma ran a hand through his hair.
“Alright, I think I know what happened, but this is outside of my area of expertise. I’m gonna get Poppy,” Xisuma disappeared in the back, probably towards the office of Madam Poppy. Gem took Pearl’s hand in hers.
“You’re okay Pearl, we’re gonna get you out of this,” Pearl nodded slightly, but her eyes were still not able to focus and she was swaying a little bit. X luckily did not take long.
“Oh goodness, where is the poor child,” Madam Poppy exclaimed as she ran out of the back door where X had disappeared to, X in tow. Madam Poppy came to a halt in front of Pearl and began doing the same tests X had done, while X explained what Gem had said.
“Yes, yes. I think you were right, Xisuma. I think that the poor girl just had her first vision, that must have been a shocking experience.” Gem’s mouth dropped at Madam Poppy’s words. Pearl was a Seer?!
It took both Xisuma and Madam Poppy half an hour to bring Pearl fully back and after that Xisuma went off to go and grab someone he knew had experience with visions.
Hypno walked in together with Xisuma a few minutes later, still dressed in his pyjamas but more awake than ever.
Hypno explained everything to Pearl, also advising her to keep whatever she had seen a secret, as first visions were more often than not set in stone. Meaning that professor Dumbledore really was to die by the hand of professor Snape and that was a gruesome thought.
Pearl was conflicted, there had been so much happening at once that she could not keep track of it all. And when she was feeling like this, the Astronomy tower was her to go to spot.
“It happened didn’t it?” The ghost with the beard was back, but he did not startle her this time.
“How did you know?” Pearl responded, still staring at the skies in front of her.
“I know a lot, little Moon, too much one might even say. That is why I am like I am, a ghost.”
“You were a Seer too?” Pearl perked up, turning around to look the ghost in the eyes.
“I was,” the ghost nodded, as he went down to sit beside her. He radiated coldness, but Pearl did not have a problem with that. It was actually kind of comforting.
“What do I call you?” she asked quietly.
“You can call me TFC.”
