Vex magic
Cub Fan was smart. He knew that he was a Ravenclaw for a reason. But he was not only booksmart. He prided himself on being extremely good during field lessons as well as being able to easily pick up social tendencies from other people.
His father’s side of the family were almost all witches and wizards, Cub’s uncle was a Squib but a joy to be around. His mother’s side of the family were however all Muggles. None of them, except his mother of course, knew that the other side of the family, Cub included, were witches and wizards. They just thought that they were very peculiar.
While he mostly took after his father in appearance, his personality was his mother’s; smart, social and mischievous. Not a good combination right? And add a Scar to the mix and you have a recipe for disaster.
Meeting Scar was a total accident.
They had been covering the topic of a specific magic branch called Vex magic during Charms.
Vex’s were quite similar to Kobalt Pixies, but were able to go through walls and were quite hostile and mischievous. They were often seen with Goblins, as some of them are able to summon them at will. Those Goblins were called Evokers and were a real pain in the ars during the Goblin wars.
Vex magic was the magic the Vex’s and Evoker’s used and was more often than not harmful. Vex magic was not something that you could just do, as it did not require a wand but instead a lot of willpower, which drained you quickly. Not even professor Flitwick was able to perform lots of Vex magic, only the standards.
Cub took that as a challenge. Charms was his best subject, so why not give it a try?
This led him to the library, as one does when they need information, and he began looking for books regarding Vex magic and how to use it.
Only problem was that there were no books, at least not where they were supposed to be. The shelf was empty, which meant that another student had gotten there before him. Most likely to work on the essay regarding Vex magic that was due for next week.
Over the course of the following week he kept stalking the bookshelf in the hopes that the books would be there again. And on the fifth day he was in luck.
A boy with mischievous green eyes, chocolate brown hair and a wheelchair, rolled up to the shelf and levitated the books back where they were supposed to be.
Cub had heard of him, but he was a fourth year not a fifth year. He was not supposed to have learned anything about Vex magic yet. And so Cub decided to confront him.
“Hello, you learn anything interesting in that Vex book?” The boy jumped in his seat and made a few funny noises before turning around to look at Cub.
“Sheesh, you scared me man, you scared me real good,” the Hufflepuff huffed, “Yeah, I liked it. But it says nothing about doing the actual magic itself, that’s a bit of a pity.” Cub sighed frustrated, he just spent five days waiting for this only for it to be useless.
“Merlin’s… ah nevermind. The reason I wanted to read those was to learn how to do it.” The boy's eyes sparked up at that.
“Maybe we can learn together! You’re Cub right? Mumbo, a friend of mine, told me about you. I’m Scar, Scar Goodtimes!” And they shook hands.
“Yeah I know Mumbo, nice to meet you Scar. I’ve a feeling that those books are in the Restricted Section, but I think that Flitwick will grant me permission as we’re covering this as of right now.” Scar nodded along. “Actually, how did you find out about Vex magic?” Cub asked the younger and Scar chuckled. It gave Cub the feeling like he maybe did not want to know the answer to that.
“You know, my friend. I was in the greenhouses one day and I wondered; what if I could go through walls. I’d be unstoppable! So many people are able to hear me due to my wheelchair and I’d not be able to get away with pranking people. But if I could go through walls, that problem would be solved!” Cub too had to chuckle at that, it would indeed be perfect for prankage.
“I see, I see good sir. I happen to be in the market for the very same thing… and of course to be able to say that I know Vex magic of course.”
Maybe fate should have never let them meet, but maybe she had other plans for this friendship, because Cub, indeed, got permission from professor Flitwick and got access to the Forbidden Section under the strict supervision of Madam Pince.
He was able to find five books that looked like they could aid him and Scar on their quest and took them to the empty classroom where he and Scar decided to have their base of operations.
While Cub had been to the library to get the books, Scar had turned the classroom upside down. Cub almost could not recognise it.
There were plants everywhere and no dust to be seen! The sun was able to shine bright though the, now polished, windows and brought a nice yellow glow to the room. It was cosy. All of the benches and chairs were set aside and made room for a nice honey yellow couch, a sapphire blue couch and an elegant but sturdy dark oak table.
It was amazing!
Scar looked proud at his work as Cub walked in and set the books on the table.
“Scar… I… wow, this is amazing!” Scar shrugged happily. “Transfiguration and Herbology are my best and favourite subjects.”
The two set to work. It took them hours upon hours to finally manage to get something.
Scar did it first.
They had been working on the most basic and easy thing to do regarding Vex magic; moving objects by sight. Even if you did it with a wandless spell it would be difficult, but Vex magic was something else.
It took them four months for Scar to be finally able to move a feather, but Cub followed soon after.
After the feather it went quick, the two now having a feel for how the magic worked and thought and moved through the room, not unlike a wind current. Soon afterwards, they were able to move the plants and the pots with just a look. Cub even moving Scar once as a joke. It resulted in the younger screaming in fear, but that was quickly replaced with joy.
After the telekinesis was intangibility. Which they are still working on as of this moment, but I have faith in them. Soon they will be taking over Hogwarts with their pranks and even rival team ZIT and Grian!
