this will have mistakes because I'm only human.

Chapter 11
Daryl led his brother, Carol, and the two kids back to the cabin in the woods.
It did not take as long, being able to follow the white fabric track much quicker this time, knowing where it ended.
Merle had been quite impressed with the kid's ability to survive in the woods, particularly since the walkers were roaming over the area, making it difficult to trek. The fact they had managed to avoid any more encounters had the older hunter wondering more about Harry’s weird and secret abilities, wondering if it had helped the two remain safe while alone in the woods.
Sophia had told her mother about their time separated as they had gotten to the cabin and were setting in for the night.
Carol was rattled as she listened to her daughter’s retelling of events, she never wanted her baby girl to ever be in danger again.
Carol embraced Sophia like a lifeline throughout the evening and later when they retired for the night, not wanting to be separated ever again.
Harry and Sophia had a lot of questions about the others in their group, wanting to know if everyone was all right. Carol had given them a quick run-through of events, not wanting them to worry so much, but knowing she shouldn’t lie or withhold too much, they would be back at the farm tomorrow and they would find out for themselves just what had been going on.
Both kids were shocked to learn of Carl being shot, Sophia had begged her mother to tell her every single detail, once Carol had informed them Carl was perfectly fine thanks to a Vet named Hershel, the kids were thrilled he was ok and recovering well.
It was reassuring for the kids to learn everyone was doing as well as they were, after the events of the highway.
“And Lori, well she is fine too, even found out she is pregnant a few days ago,” Carol said.
Sophia gasped at the information, while Harry looked on in confusion, looking to Merle, hoping for more of an explanation.
“Mrs Lori is going to have a baby” Sophia gushed in excitement.
“Looks like kiddo,”
“Who would give it to her?” At Harry's question, the three adults paused before they burst out into pearls of laughter, Harry watched on perplexed as the adults struggled to control their emotions, all three trying to remain as quiet as possible.
“I don’t understand, how is it going to get here?” Harry continued, Carol was the first to recover and tried to explain as smoothly as she could where babies came from and how they grow. Harry now understanding, blushed in embarrassment.
“Will Lori have to marry Shane if it's his baby?” Sophia asked innocently.
“Lori’s still married to Rick sweetheart, she can’t marry Shane”.
“Sides, Rick seemed to not care that it might be Shane’s, he will just go on and act like it's his anyway,” Daryl uttered.
“He very well might, but my money is on the Law dog being the baby daddy and not wanting Rick getting in the way,” Merle stated with concern. It would sure be a hell of a show if things came to blow with the two men, both ex-officers hadn’t been seeing eye to eye and tensions had been rising at the different approach to leading, no one was blind to the hostility growing.
Carol informed Sophia and Harry not to talk about it around the other members of the group as it was a bit of a sensitive subject for the two ex-officers and Lori.
It wasn’t long till their discussion came to an end, they made a pile of blankets in the lounge to bunk down for the night, all remaining close to one another for warmth and comfort.
When morning was upon them, just as the first rays of sunlight were seen through the trees, the small group of five packed what they could carry, and after a small breakfast, they began the strenuous journey back to the farm.
—————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— ——————————
Rick was preparing to take Randall out and leave the young boy a few miles away, hoping to take T-dog with him on this trip instead.
He couldn’t trust that Shane wouldn’t attack him again after their last journey out.
It had been very tense ever since the events that took place two days ago.
The group surrounding him was there to listen in and stay informed of the situation, Andrea and Glenn adding their input now and then, along with Maggie and Jimmy who knew the area the most amongst them at present.
Lori stood by his side, hassling him about going out again and not thinking about the danger he was putting himself in. It was making Rick frustrated with the woman, wanting her to back off and leave him alone so he could sort his thoughts out. He had lost trust in the woman he had once loved and now only felt exasperated in her presence.
As Rick was going over the plan once more, focusing on T-dog as he spoke, he noticed movement out of the corner of his eye and quickly drew his weapon, turning to face the possible threat, Rick watched as the Dixon’s appeared from the tree line alone, his quick movement drew the attention of the group around him.
When everyone had noticed the brothers returning, they began to converge on the two rednecks, meeting them halfway, joyful for their safe return and asking how their search had gone.
Rick waited to see if Carol was behind them, but he couldn’t see her past the two bulky brothers. He was coming up with all sorts of horrible scenarios that could have happened to the slight woman as he observed the two approaching.
When everyone was a few feet before him the two hunters stopped, staring him down, making Rick tense further at the way they were acting, Merle gave a low long whistle.
Rick was confused at first not understanding, he only realized what it meant when he spied Carol coming through the trees right where the Dixon brothers had emerged from, the widow wasn’t alone as she approached, Rick was frozen at the sight of Sophia, and Harry beside her, holding hands.
It took Rick a long amount of time to completely comprehend what he was seeing, long had he believed the worst had happened, but here the two stood, looking completely unharmed, dirty from the hike in the woods and looking exhausted, but otherwise completely fine.
Everyone had gasped in astonishment at the sight, shouting out in surprise and happiness. The Dixons remained silent and watched the reunion with stares of contempt at those who had sworn they believed the two kids could not be found alive.
“Oh my God! I can’t believe it, you found them” Andrea gushed, completely shocked at seeing the two children.
The blond had given up helping with the search first as she chose to stay atop the RV and watch for Walker, Rick didn’t blame her at the time for wanting to contribute to the safety of the group, but now he was regretting not insisting they all continue to help in the search.
Once Andrea had given up without a rebut from Rick, others had quickly followed till the Dixons were the only ones out searching daily, with Carol by their side on the farm, helping them out where she could.
The widow had been taken under the wing of the older gruff man and had been gaining confidence with his guidance on surviving, Carol had come a long way from the meek woman Rick had been introduced to at the Quarry.
“Never doubted it for a second we’d find them” Carol stated with a hard stare, as if to point out the obvious, that she was right all along, and the others gave up looking for the children far too soon.
Guilt began to eat away at Rick as he took in the sight of the two found kids.
“I’m so glad you are safe and back with us,” Lori said as she hugged the young girl briefly, smiling at Carol and giving her shoulder a gentle squeeze. Carol brushed the affectionate touch away, looking at the people around her with a look of disdain, staring down at the people who gave up on two young and vulnerable kids lost in a dangerous world.
“They had bunked down and waited to be found in a safe place, they were waiting for us to find them.” Carol heatedly said to the group members, many of them looked down in shame and guilt.
Lori backed away from the angered woman, the brunette looking scared as if she was expecting to be struck, being the one, along with Shane, who was the most outspoken about what a waste of time it was to keep searching.
“We were just lost, it wasn’t even for THAT long” Sophia explained, breaking some of the tension amongst them, the young girl not getting what the fuss was all about.
Rick, walked forward then, holstering his gun, with regret clear on his face, he bent down and pulled a reluctant Harry in for a hug, being overwhelmed at the sight before him, running his hands over the young boy’s hair and checking him over for injuries.
He had felt responsible when the two had gone missing, he constantly kept thinking about everything he could have done better and was blaming himself for not being able to find them right away.
It was incredible that they were found after ten days out in the woods alone, woods that were crawling with the diseased. Rick made a silent promise to do better when it came to the safety of the group.
Harry showed clear discomfort with the attention Rick was giving him and pulled away from the man, standing an arm's length away, inching closer over to Merle, the gruff man had taken notice and lifted the boy into his arms with ease. Rick flushing in embarrassment then turned and gave Sophia a quick hug in greeting, telling her he was so happy she was back.
“Well, what we all standing round here for? We all tired and the kids could do with good feeding and a bath” Merle yelled as he began to push past the others surrounding them, he began to make his way to the house with Harry, looking back to make sure his brother, Carol, and Sophia were following him.
Everyone was so overjoyed with the return of the two missing kids they had momentarily forgotten what they had been doing, T-dog nudged Rick and gestured to the map he held.
“We are about to take Randell out and leave him an hour out,” Rick said, he gave T-dog a nod of acknowledgment, waving the man away to collect the prisoner.
Merle paused and waited to find out more of what the plan was.
T-dog had only been gone a moment before he came rushing back. Panting, he told everyone the shed was empty.
The group was immediately on alert, most standing around panicked, not knowing what to do, Daryl despite being tired from a long day’s journey had offered to check around, climbing onto the shed roof to see if any of the panels were damaged, but it was still fully secured. They couldn’t see any way the young man might have escaped from the shed.
It wasn’t long till Shane came running from the tree line yelling that the prisoner had escaped, got the jump on him, and took the ex-officers gun, that he was out loose in the woods and armed.
Rick acted instantly, shouting out orders, Lori and Andrea were panicked while Glenn, Maggie, and T-dog armed themselves, Daryl was ready with his crossbow, and Merle was organizing with his brother and Carol, they needed to get the kids to the farmhouse for safety, they wouldn’t risk them again.
Rick needed to keep the group safe, ordering the ladies to lock themselves inside the house with the others, sending T-dog to join Merle, to watch their back.
He heard Merle tell his brother to be careful out there, that he didn’t like the look on the mad dog’s face, something wasn’t adding up, Rick was in complete agreement with the redneck for once. Shane was more anxious than Rick had ever seen him, the man was trying to hide it, but the ex-sheriff knew his tells.
Rick watched the older hunter follow the ladies without complaint for once, to the farmhouse taking on the job of helping to secure the building from the current threat.
Everything was going ass up, and Rick wanted someone he knew could shoot at the house, close to the three kids and the Greene’s to make sure that if anything happened, they would be kept safe, for once he knew the group at the house would be completely safe with Merle Dixon.
—————————— ——————————- —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— ——————————
Ricks had them split up into two groups of two and was searching through the woods, it had been a challenging day for everyone, and the ex-sheriff just wanted it to end.
Making sure as many people remained safe at the house as possible, Rick partnered with Shane while Daryl took Glenn out with him, the hunter was a far better tracker and more than likely to find the missing prisoner.
As he made his way through the woods following Shane, Rick was getting the feeling of wrongness. His gut instinct was telling him Shane was leading him right where he wanted him to be, not even acting like he was searching. The Ex-sheriff was putting all the pieces together in his head and not liking the conclusion he came to.
As they made their way out into a field, Rick began questioning his once best friend about the events of the afternoon, not accepting the lies the other man was spinning.
It was time to confront his former friend.
“So, this is where you planned to do it?” Rick asked as he stood a few feet away with his back to the ex-deputy.
“It's a good place as any.” Shane’s reply had Rick tensing some more, it had been a long time coming he knew, but for Shane to now be acting so calm, he was seeing the man for the killer he had become.
“At least have the balls to call this what it is, Murder.” Both angered men were circulating each other now, Rick had holstered his gun and was eyeing Shane with trepidation.
“You really believe if you walk back onto that farm alone, no me, no Randall” Rick started before being interrupted by the other man.
“I want you to hush up” Shane yelled. Rick wasn’t deterred.
“You really believe they're gonna buy whatever bullshit story you cook up?” The ex-sheriff became more enraged as they continued, Shane now holding him at gunpoint, hands steady with no sign of hesitation as they continued to circle each other.
“That's just it. It ain't no story. I saw that prisoner shoot you down. I ran after him. I snapped his neck. It ain't gonna be easy, but Lori and Carl, they'll get over you. They've done it before…They just gonna have to.” Shane explained, eyes steady on Rick, looking unhinged as he explained his delusions.
Rick felt like he had been punched in the gut at the reminder of his time in the hospital, a reminder that his wife had gone right into the other man’s arms so quickly while thinking Rick had just died.
“Why? Why now? I thought we worked this all out.” Rick questioned, trying to understand and buy himself some time to think through a plan of action.
Rick could see the conviction on the other man’s face, could hear it in his voice, his once best and most trusted friend truly believed that killing him was the best thing to do. The best way to be with Lori, undisputed.
“We tried to kill each other man, what you think? We just gonna forget about it all? We gonna ride off into the sunset together?” Shane yelled back mockingly.
“You're gonna kill me in cold blood? Screw my wife? Have my children, MY CHILDREN, call you daddy? Is that what you want? That life won't be worth a damn, I know you, you won't be able to live with this.” Rick countered angrily, he was to the point of trying to talk the other man down, using anything he had to, but he knew this could only end one of two ways.
“What you know about what I can live with? You got no idea what I can live with, what I live with!” Shane bellowed.
“You wanna talk about what I can do, how about I go back to that farm after I shoot you down, and kill every last one of them sons of bitches huh? How about that, take Lori and Carl with me, loot the place then set it ablaze” Shane ranted looking crazier than Rick had ever seen him.
“You won't and you know it, you won't get very far either way, the others will fight back, no way they are going to go down without a fight.” Emotions were high, you could cut the tension with a knife.
“No? maybe not all of them then, but enough to make them distraught and divided. Start with the two young ones. They should be dead anyway. No way they should have survived out there, it's not natural” Shane was pacing in front of Rick like a mad caged animal, an animal ready to strike at any moment.
“You won't live long enough to get anywhere near them kids.” Rick asserted, scared at the possibility of Shane doing exactly as he stated, he could tell Shane was very serious with his threat, Rick had to put him down, there was no other option.
“Or how about what you can do? Here I am, come on, man, raise your gun.” Shane stowed his gun in his pants and raised his arms, egging Rick on to be the first to attack.
“No, no, I will not.” The ex-sheriff denied, he was not one to attack first, Rick still held belief in the good law, he would protect himself from attack, it didn’t mean he would be the one to instigate it, he would keep his hand clean for as long as he possibly could.
“What happened, Rick? I thought you weren't the good guy anymore, ain't that what you said? Even right here, right now, you ain't gonna fight for 'em? I'm a better father than you, Rick. I'm better for Lori than you, man.” Shane reasoned, the man was more unhinged than Rick could ever have imagined, it was sad to hear how much Shane thought of him finally.
“It's 'cause I'm a better man than you, Rick. 'Cause I can be here, and I'll fight for it. You come back here, and you just destroy everything! You got a broken woman, you got a weak boy.
You ain't got the first clue on how to fix it, this group is divided so much.” Shane thundered in fury. “I had it all held together before you came along, bringing some snot-nosed brat with you, one more mouth to feed, that we didn’t need, burdening us with his presence.” The enraged man snarled pulling his holstered weapon out once more and pointing it right at Rick.
It hurt to hear the lies, Carl was far from weak, his recovery from the gunshot wound was proof enough for him that Shane was talking shit, the man didn’t know his son as well as he thought he did, his child was resilient and brilliant, Shane just couldn’t see it.
Lori was a very strong woman who just had poor judgment, she could take care of herself if she wanted, but the fact she acted like she needed to be saved and coddled was an act Rick was all too familiar with. He knew his wife, how she acted like the First Lady of the group, pretending to want stability and a sense of normalcy for them but she was so involved with her own chaos, Shane was so blind to it.
And Harry was far from a burden, he had more than pulled his weight, keeping Rick alive in the hospital for one, saving Merle’s life on the rooftop when T-dog lost the key, even if no one is clear on the how, and helping Merle and Daryl with what they hunted for meals. The child was resourceful and kind, Shane could learn a thing or two from the boy.
“Raise your gun,” Shane demanded.
“You're gonna have to kill an unarmed man.” Rick countered, “Watch my hand, nice and easy, easy does it.” Rick soothed, he reached across his body to remove his gun with his left hand. He held the weapon out in front of himself, showing the other ex-officer that he wasn’t planning on shooting it.
“Now listen to me, Shane. There is still a way back from this, nothing has happened here.” Refuted Rick.
Both men were slowly approaching each other, Shane was breathing hard but didn’t show any sign he was letting up.
“We're gonna lay down our guns and we're gonna walk back to the farm... Together, back to Lori, back to Carl. Put this all behind us.” The ex-Sherif pleaded gently as he held out his gun for Shane to take.
As the other man grabbed for the weapon, Rick reached behind his back and quickly pulled out his knife, as Shane took the gun, Rick struck, plunging the knife deep into the other man’s chest, right into his heart.
A shot was fired, from the other man’s gun, at the same time as Rick struck, the ex-sheriff was astonished he hadn’t been hit with the loose bullet.
Adrenaline had fuelled him right up to this point, but with the standoff coming to an end Rick was being hit with the reality of the situation.
The reality was he had just killed his once best friend, a man who he had known and trusted for over half of his life.
Rick lowered the injured man to the ground.
“Shh.” He soothed as Shane grunted and groaned in pain from being stabbed.
“Damn you for making me do this, Shane. This was you, not me!” Rick sobbed, he couldn’t hold back the tears of anguish any longer, distraught due to the betrayal, overwhelmed with grief from losing a man he once called his brother.
“You did this to us! This was you, not me-- not me! Not me! Son of... “ Rick echoed, yelling at the now dying man as he bled out from the stab wound to the heart.
Rick wept, everything was so wrong, he had trusted Shane, he was his best friend, his longest friend. The betrayal was heartbreaking.
Rick sat in the field just holding Shane, long minutes went by as he grieved for the man. Crying in torment at the unfairness of the world.
—————————————————————
Rick couldn’t say how long he stayed in the field watching over Shane’s dead body, contemplating his next move.
“Dad?” Rick was brought back to reality by Carl, his son stood a few feet away looking on in confusion and worry.
“Carl,” Rick said as he rose to approach the young boy.
He could see tears in his son’s eyes as he got closer, he didn’t want his son to see the dead man on the ground, but it seemed it was too late.
“You know... You should be back home with Mom and the others,” stated Rick as he approached his son. He wasn’t sure how Carl knew where to look for him, they had walked through the woods before making it to the field, Carl couldn’t have been following them, he had to have crossed the dark field from the house, stubbornly wanting to help them search once more.
Rick was getting exasperated with Carl’s inability to follow orders, the child wanted to prove himself able but was showing his mother’s stubborn defiance of authority and boundaries.
Carl raised a gun he had in hand, shocking Rick, he didn’t know what to think at this stage, did Carl see him kill Shane, would Carl kill him? His own dad, because he put down a man who had him at gunpoint, put down a threat to the group?
“Just-- just put the-- put the gun down, it’s not what it seems. Please.” The ex-serif pleaded stuttering and struggling to get the words out. He had lost too much today, he couldn’t fathom losing his son’s trust over Shane’s actions.
Rick slowly got closer, pleading with Carl to give him the gun, suddenly Carl pulled the trigger.
Rick stood there in confusion, he heard a thump from behind him, turning to see what it was he saw Shane’s body had moved closer to them, Shane had risen as a walker.
Carl had pulled the trigger on the gun, putting Shane down with so little hesitation, showing Rick more proof of just how strong his son was.
Rick stared at Sheane for a good minute in astonishment, he now had clear evidence of what he discovered at the CDC from Dr Jenner. They were all infected and would all become walkers if they died, regardless of being bit or not.
Both of them approached the body of his once friend, Rick making Carl stay back just in case, the ex-sheriff wanted to make sure that the walker was taken care of for good, he couldn’t think of the man it used to be, it was now far easier to think of him as one of the dead they had to continually protect themselves from.
After confirming Shane was dead for good, Carl and Rick began the head to the farmhouse.
—————————— ——————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— —————————— ——————————
The group gathered in the house were on edge, another stressful situation to add to the growing number of problems they were facing daily.
Carol had helped the two kids to get cleaned up upstairs and get into some fresh clean clothes, both children were so exhausted that they didn’t last long after excitedly telling Carl about their time in the woods, a quick bath, and dinner.
Carol had then taken some time to freshen up herself, the day had been long trekking through the woods, but the slight woman had been more joyful than ever before.
Time seemed to be slowing down now however as they all sat around waiting for the others to return with news.
“I'm going after them.” Andrea declared, the blond woman was sick of waiting around, waiting for the possibility of an attack, she felt confident she could take on some kid herself if she came across him.
“Don't, they could be anywhere, and if Randall comes back, we're gonna need you.” Lori pointed out to the blond, feeding into her ego, just as Glenn and Daryl entered the house.
Everyone rose to hear what the two had to say.
“Rick and Shane ain't back?” The hunter questioned, looking about the room in search of his brother.
The older hunter was standing off to the side leaning against the door frame. Merle had taken a quick shower and changed into cleaner clothes, looking more rested now he had taken the time to sit and eat.
Daryl was given a negative response from Lori.
“We heard a shot” Daryl explained in confusion, hoping someone had an explanation.
“Maybe they found Randall” Lori quickly replied, the brunette was looking worn out and tired, on edge with her husband out there once more trying to keep them safe. She felt like it was just Rick out there cleaning up another one of his messes, but she wouldn’t be telling the others what she really thought.
“We found him,” Daryl answered, eyeing the group that stood around listening, it had been a long day and the hunter just wanted to sit and relax now that the kids were found. The group was full of drama and never went a day without something bad going on.
“Is he back in the shed?” Patricia questioned, wanting to know if they were safe from the threat, the blond woman prayed the outcome was in their favor.
“He's a walker,” was Daryl’s quick explanation.
“Did you find the walker that bit him?” The aged vet queried, the group didn’t want any wandering the farm unknowingly.
“No,” said Glenn, “the weird thing is he wasn't bit.” The Korean man disclosed to the group.
“His neck was broken.” The younger hunter finished.
The group looked at the two in disbelief and panic, they were in varying states of shock at the information. It didn’t make sense to them how he could become a walker from a broken neck, collectively they didn’t want to believe it, it was too scary a thought.
“The thing is, Shane and Randall's tracks were right on top of each other, and Shane ain't no tracker, so he didn't come up behind him. They were together.” Daryl explained, being knowledgeable about tracking, they knew he was telling the truth, there was no reason to make it up.
Lori got up and approached the two men.
“Would you please get back out there, find Rick and Shane, and find out what on earth is going on?” The woman asked, brushing her hand along Daryl’s arm, making the younger man uncomfortable.
After a quick silent conversation with his brother through looks alone he replied.
“You got it.” The hunter agreed, he wanted to know what was going on as well. The sooner it was all sorted the sooner he could tuck into bed after such an exhausting day trekking through the woods.
“Thank you.”
————————————————————— --
“You bit too?” Carl asked his dad as they made their way back to the farmhouse.
He had snuck out after catching up with Harry and Sophia and hearing about their adventure in the woods.
He felt like he had missed out on so much but was glad to have them back finally.
He went looking for his dad when he had heard they weren’t back yet, he wanted to help and to not be left out all the time.
Sophia and Harry had got to have some adventure, so he should as well.
He had been close enough to his dad when he heard the shot, pinpointing the direction he was to go, he arrived just in time, he was shocked at first to see Shane dead on the ground, it was hard to see so in the dark, but it looked like he was covered in blood, looking like he was attacked by something.
As his dad made his way over, he saw movement, at first, he wasn’t sure, but he raised his gun and aimed it anyway, he wasn’t going to let another walker hurt someone he cared about.
Once he was sure Shane had turned into a walker and was coming at them, he fired the gun, his aim was true, and the walker dropped to the ground unmoving.
“No,” was his dad’s response to his question after a moment's pause.
“Shane was,” Carl stared as he walked close to the man. It was sad that Shane was gone, his mom was going to be pretty upset, it was like losing a member of the family. Carl was just glad his dad was ok and unhurt.
“That wasn't Shane. You know that.” His dad refuted.
“Used to be.” The young boy responded.
“What happened? You guys attacked? I mean, I... I heard a gunshot, but I didn't see any walkers nearby” Carl queried “How did Shane die?”
They came to a stop, his dad looked tired and worn out, as the man opened his mouth to explain they both froze and stopped at a horrid, familiar hissing sound coming from behind them.
“Oh my God! Go-go-go-go-go-go-go-go-go.” Rick said in a hushed whisper, Carl could hear the panic in his dad’s voice and was beginning to get pretty scared, he followed the older man, not wanting to get separated in the panic.
“We... we gotta get to the house, tell the others,” Carl stated panting after running across the farm, he was being just as quiet as his dad was while staying low, but the dead were beginning to get too close, Carl knew he had to try a keep a level head in the situation, they couldn’t afford any mistakes.
“We'll never get through that.” Rick denied, looking all around hoping to see something that could give him an idea, anything to help them out of the line of danger.
“Can't go around,” Carl responded.
“Carl, stay close… Go!” His dad said as he led him through the ambling dead, heading for the barn as it was the closed building they could get to for shelter.
