Chapter Six

Members of the group gathered for breakfast the next morning, some were feeling well-rested, while others like Glenn were miserable due to the hangover they sported.

Rick took a seat next to his wife with a weary groan.

“Hello,” the man called out tiredly.

“Are you hung over? Mom said you’d be” Carl asked, not taking any notice of the astonished look Lori threw him for his blunt question.

“Mom is right,” Rick responded as he picked up a bottle of aspirin sitting on the table in front of him.

“Mom has that annoying habit,” Lori deadpanned, with a roll of her eyes she went back to eating her breakfast.

“Eggs. Powdered, but—but I do ‘em good, I bet you can’t tell.” T-dog called causing Glenn to groan in pain at the other man’s loud voice.

Dale gently snickered at Glenn’s misery, it seemed the young man could not handle his liquor.

Jacqui being the only sympathetic one, began to rub Glenn’s shoulders to try to smooth the Asian man who had quite the headache.

T-Dog went around the table dishing out the powdered eggs to everyone, making sure he gave Glenn a good portion.

“Protein helps the hangover.” The larger man informed Glenn only receiving more moans of pain in response.

Just as they were all settling down to eat Daryl and Merle came into the room, the former carrying a still-sleepy Harry.

“Is he alright?” Rick asked the men, he had been informed last night that the child was found but it was late, and Lori had asked him to come to bed, he hadn’t had an opportunity to check in and see how the young boy was.

“Right as rain friendly, we got it all squared away last night,” Merle informed him as Daryl placed Harry down on a seat next to Carl and began to dish him up some food.

“Got what all squared away?” Andrea asked, everyone was looking at them with curiosity.

“Just some misunderstanding is all, it’s all sorted now, Lil bit is fine,” Merle told the woman in answer, he could tell they weren’t satisfied but he wasn’t going to indulge their curiosity when it was none of their business.

After Daryl had finished putting food on the boy’s plate Merle noticed he didn’t start eating right away.

“Eat your breakfast,” he told him as he pointed directly at the plate in front of the child.

“Thank you” Harry called gently as he dug in, he ignored the looks he was getting from the people around him as he hastily devoured the food.

The others went back to eating, finally giving up on the thought that they would be told anything.

Glenn had his head down on the table now and was still moaning in discomfort.

“Don’t ever, ever, ever let me drink again.” He groaned.

Shane chose that moment to walk in through the door, receiving a round of greetings as he went to retrieve a cup of coffee.

“Hey. Feel as bad as I do?” Rick asked his partner.

“Worse,” Shane responded shaking his head in amusement, while he focused on pouring his coffee.

As Shane made his way to the table, T-dog noticed scratches on the man’s neck.

“What the Hell happened to you? Your neck?” He asked gesturing in Shane’s direction.

Shane looked puzzled at the inquiry.

“I must have done it in my sleep.” Shane eventually explained before he began to eat the food on a plate in front of him.

“Never seen you do that before,” Rick commented as he stared at his partner in worry.

“Me neither, not like me at all.” Was the deputy’s response, Rick pretended not to notice the look he had thrown Lori, perhaps she was angry at him last night while he was out looking for Harry, he could always ask later, but now didn’t seem like the time.

Lori hadn’t told me about an argument, so maybe it wasn’t a big deal.’ The man thought.

The next to arrive at the gathering was Doctor Jenner, who homed in on the coffee right away.

“Morning.” He called out drowsily.

“Hey, Doc,” Shane called in response, seeming happy for the distraction, getting the attention away from him.

Everyone else at the table proceeded to greet the doctor, as they finished up eating.

“Doctor, I don’t mean to slam you with questions first thing,” Dale said, after a pointed look from Andrea.

“But you will anyway.” The doctor responded.

“We didn’t come here for the eggs,” Andrea added as she watched the doctor with hopeful eyes.

—————————————————————

After everyone was finished eating, Doctor Jenner got them to gather in front it the large screen in Zone 5

He walked them through a recording of the events of someone’s death. TS-19 had volunteered to be tested on while they died of the virus, so the CDC could hopefully use the data to work on a cure.

Harry had never seen anything like it before in his life, it was scary and thrilling all at the same time, to see the brain like he had never before.

The brain was a wonderful thing and to see it like that all alive and bright, beautiful with life only to turn dark with death, then come back with some small lights, not colorful and happy colors anymore, just a small cluster, no memories, no thoughts, no person.

Harry believed it was a very terrible way to die.

Doctor Jenner continued to talk about what was speculated about the disease, not knowing what it truly was made it impossible to cure.

The person on the screen continued to move after the brain had gone dark, it only had a small number of red lights at what the Doctor said was the brain stem, it moved its mouth open and closed like it was screaming, the head moving side to side like it was thrashing in pain or just trying to get free, Harry was aware that it wasn’t screaming it was making the moaning noises all the other dead ones made.

He couldn’t say if it was in pain, there was nothing left of the person from before, just a body moving around with the basic instinct to move and hunt.

The barrel of a gun appeared at the test subject’s forehead, pointing down. A bullet enters the brain on screen and tears through the red cluster of embers that made up the brain stem. Harry watched transfixed as the brain went completely dark and the subject stopped moving.

“God. What was that?” Carol asked in shock, she was clutching Sophia to her, and both looked to be very shaken by the whole playback.

“He shot his patient in the head, didn’t you?” Andrea spoke not looking away from Doctor Jenner.

The man was unreadable, he wasn’t showing any emotions, and it was hard to say if he was handling things well or not.

“VI, Power down the main screen and the workstations.” The Doctor suddenly asked the AI, who responded by confirming the command.

“You have no idea what it is, do you?” Andrea asked in disbelief, the shock of everything catching up to the blond woman.

“It could be microbial, viral, parasitic, fungal.” Doctor Jenner responded unhelpfully.

“Or the wrath of God?” Jacqui quickly snapped.

“There is that.” Jenner agreed, emotionless.

Andrea wasn’t satisfied, however, “Somebody must know something. Somebody somewhere.” She protested.

“There are others. Other facilities?” Carol asked trying to soothe the blond's irritation, Andrea wasn’t the only one agitated by the lack of knowledge, Dale, Shane, and Merle were all just as worked up.

“There may be some, people like me,” Jenner told them.

Rick was just as astonished as the rest of them with this information.

“But you don’t know? How can you not know?” He asked the Doctor. Rick looked at the man pleadingly like his expression, his desperation to protect his family, could somehow change the Doctors' knowledge suddenly.

Doctor Jenner signed he looked very tired and like he wanted to be done with the whole lot of them, “Everything went down. Communications, directives—all of it. I’ve been in the dark for almost a month.” The man explained.

Everyone began to talk amount’s themselves until Andrea piped up, “So it’s not just here, there’s nothing left anywhere nothing, that’s what you’re really saying, right?”

“Jesus,” Jacqui swore, she wasn’t the only one. Merle was cursing under his breath as well.

“Man, I’m gonna get shitfaced drunk again.” Daryl declared earning a warning look from Merle. Harry didn’t think now was the right time to be indulging in any more alcohol.

Most of the group were talking with each other and it was beginning to get a bit loud in the room.

It was Dale who brought everyone’s attention back to their host.

“Dr. Jenner, I know this has been taxing for you and I hate to ask one more question, but…that clock—it’s counting down. What happens at zero?” The man asked as he pointed out the large digital clock on the wall with red glowing numbers.

“The basement generators—they run out of fuel.” The Doctor signed, rubbing his eyes tiredly.

“And then?” Rick prompted.

Doctor Jenner ignored the question and instead walked out of the expansive room. No one followed the man, they were all looking around at each other in disbelief and stumped on what to do next.

“Daryl, why don’t you go gather up our things for us nice and quick, I think we will be wanting to leave real soon, Harry, I want you to stick close to Sophia and her mom OK?” Merle ordered, without any reason not to Harry made his way over to stand next to the older girl.

“VI, what happens when the power runs out?” Rick called out to the AI.

“When the power runs out, facility-wide decontamination will occur.” The female voice answered, sending the adults in the room frenzied.

Several of the group ran out of the room, Merle said they were wasting their time going to check on the generators but he followed them anyway, the clock told them all they needed to know about how much fuel was left.

The adults of the group were beginning to panic now, and it was causing the children to be anxious.

—————————————————————

“Decontamination—what does that mean?” Glenn asked no one in particular.

They had headed for the stairwell and went straight down to the lowest level. The basement level was a maze of corridors leading to a dozen different rooms.

“I don’t like the way Jenner clammed up. The way he just wandered off like that.” Shane fretted, Merle agreed with the man, it pained him to do so but he agreed.

“What’s wrong with him? Seriously, man. Is he nuts, medicated, what?” T-dog worried,

Rick looked at a map of the basement level they were on, the generator room was nearby, and they were going to see how long they had. There could be more fuel to hook up and reset the timer, there had to be more somewhere. The CDC was as fortified as they came, it was the safest place for his family to stay, and losing the building would be a huge blow to the group.

“In there.” Rick pointed as they hurried along the corridors.

Once in the right area, they split up to check all the rooms in the corridor, Shane followed Rick as they made their way through a utility room looking for the generators.

Once they located the machine, Rick found a barrel with a hose coming out of it.

The gauge read almost empty, so the ex-sheriff shook the barrel gently to test to see if it was accurate.

Sighing Rick declared it empty just as the generator clanked and whined to a stop.

Lights above flickered and went out, a separate set of lighting came on, but the room was dimmer than before.

“Emergency lighting is on.” The female AI informed.

“What the Hell is this?” Shane asked as.

Glenn, T-Dog, and Merle ran up to them.

“Hey, you guys kill the lights?” The Asian man asked slightly out of breath.

“Nah, it just went out,” Shane informed them.

Rick had looked at a few barrels around only to discover they were all empty.

“Anything?” He asked the others, hoping they had some good news.

“Yeah, a lot of dead generators and more empty fuel drums than I can count.” T-dog panted.

“This is a waste of time, we should all get the hell out while we still can, and if none y’all gone get to it, we’ll be leaving you in the dust” Merle informed them as he began to make his way to the stairwell to head back to the group.

With only a moment to pause and take in what the gruff man said, the rest of them began to make their way back upstairs following close behind.

—————————————————————

The group that had styled on the level with Zone 5 had all broken up into smaller groups now and were pacing around the building all agitated, not knowing what to do with themselves.

Lori had taken Carl with her when she had gone back to their room and was sorting out her bag when the room began to heat up, she stood under the room vent for a moment before she waved her arms under to feel if there was flow.

“Mom? Something wrong?” Carl asked his mother.

“Uh, nothing. It’s just…the air conditioning stopped.” The brunette responded, she would leave it up to Rick to sort out though, as she went back to sorting out her things.

Back in the main part of Zone 5, Doctor Jenner sat at a desk in a bird’s nest office, looking at a photograph of a beautiful woman. She had lovely blond hair and was smiling at the camera looking without a care in the world.

Jenner sighed as he continued to gaze longingly at the picture.

“I did the best I could in the time that I had. I hope you’d be proud of that.” The man sniffled, he was tearing up as he put the picture down on a nearby desk to pick up his work badge, walking to the window of his office he gazed down at the area below.

“We always think there’s gonna be more time…“ Jenner exhaled, resting his head on the glass, allowing a few tears to fall.

The power had wined down to emergency power only.

“Then it runs out.” The man whispered.

As the group was spread out in their rooms, Doctor Jenner had sorted himself out and began to head back down to Zone 5, he was passing the corridor the group had slept in when he was asked why the air was off by Carol, who had Sophia and Harry standing close to her.

“And the lights in our room?” Lori added in, enquiring from her doorway.

Further down the hall, Daryl stuck his head out, he was packing up the bags and getting them ready like Merle said to do, but he was also stashing away things from the kitchen and storage rooms.

When he stuck his head out, he still had a liquor bottle in his hand.

“What’s going on? Why is everything turned off?” He asked as the doctor made his way past.

Jenner just took the whiskey bottle from Daryl without slowing down his pace.

“Energy use is being prioritized.” He called as he continued to walk.

“Air isn’t a priority. And lights?” Dale asked in worry.

Jenner shocked the group by drinking straight from the bottle he had taken from Daryl.

“It’s not up to me. Zone 5 is shutting itself down.” He informed them emotionlessly.

“Hey! What the Hell does that mean?” Daryl yelled as he followed the man.

Jenner just kept walking and the group decided to follow after the two men hoping to hear the answer, more sounds were heard as the facility continued to shut down.

Daryl had caught up to the man, grabbing at him to stop.

“Hey, man, I’m talking to you. What do you mean it’s shutting itself down? How can a building do anything?” He asked in irritation.

Before the Doctor could reply Rick, Shane, Glenn, T-dog, and Merle emerged from the hall leading to the stairwell.

“You’d be surprised.” Was all Jenner said in response.

Lori looked to her husband in worry, the man didn’t look like he had anything good to inform them of, “Rick?” She asked waiting for the man to update her, only Rick motioned her to wait as he approached the Doctor.

“Jenner, what’s happening?” Rick asked the man as calmly as he could manage.

“The system is dropping all the nonessential uses of power. It’s designed to keep the computers running to the last possible second. That started as we approached the half-hour mark. Right on schedule.” The man informed Rick as he took another swing from the bottle of whisky, he walked to the computers and looked around seeing the group all gathered.

He handed the bottle back to Daryl who snatched it back angrily.

Jenner turned to Andrea and gave her a half smile that didn’t reach his eyes,  “It was the French.” He told her.

“What?” Andrea asked in confusion.

“They were the last ones to hold out as far as I know. While our people were bolting out the doors and committing suicide in the hallways, they stayed in the labs till the end. They thought they were close to a solution.” The Doctor explained.

“What happened?” Jacqui stepped up to ask.

“The same thing that’s happening here. No power grid. Ran out of juice. The world runs on fossil fuels. I mean, how stupid is that?” Jenner smirked, the group was uneasy with the man, he was clearly detreating, becoming more unhinged.

“Let me tell you” Shane started only to be interrupted by Rick putting his hand on his arm.

“To Hell with it, Shane. I don’t even care. Lori, grab our things. Everybody, get your stuff. We’re getting out of here now!” The man shouted, but he stopped at the sight of Merle who had snuck off while everyone was wasting time standing around, he had been moving the bags from each room, placing them on the ground at the entrance from the corridor.

Before anyone even had a chance to jump into action a loud alarm began to sound through the facility.

All the children tried to cover their ears at the shrill sound.

“What’s that?” Carl yelled from his place wrapped in his mother’s arms.

“30 minutes to decontamination.” The female AI, Vi said.

“Doc, what’s going on here?” Daryl inquired as he moved to stand with his brother.

He was ignored by the man as Jenner began to press buttons on a keypad.

The adults decided to leave the man alone now, clearly, he was not going to be of any help,

“Everybody, y’all heard Rick,” Shane yelled as he made his way over to where Merle left the group's bags.

“Get your stuff and let’s go! Go now! Go!” Rick called.

Everyone grabbed their bag and began to head for the door.

A whining clanking noise filled the air as a security door slid shut blocking the exit to the stairwell that Rick was leading the group to, with the door shut Rick ran to it in panic.

He was far from the only one as the group collectively began to descend into chaos.

“No. Did you just lock us in? He just locked us in!” Glenn shrieked.

The doctor had sat down at a computer and began to talk to the screen.

“We’ve hit the 30-minute window. I’m recording.” The man said.

—————————————————————

With the room in a frenzy, everyone ignored Harry standing by the security door, after everyone else had turned back to argue with the doctor, he had collected his bag and had moved through the group to stand by the metal shutter.

Harry was standing back and away from the group trying to stay small and be unnoticed, just like his uncle said he needed to be.

The group was all yelling and worried, the Doctor was going on about no hope left for humanity, and Rick was trying to get the man to let them all go, but the man was firm in his belief that a quick painless death was the right answer.

Andrea agreed with the doctor, she had just lost her sister, and she was sad and grieving the loss, it was only natural to fall into a state of acceptance when given an out, she was in pain and only wanted it all to stop.

But it wasn’t fair to them all, everyone else in the group just wanted a chance at surviving, Harry included, he was finally away from his relatives and he was being well looked after by Merle, he had talked to Daryl last night, and found out that his dad hurt him and Merle when they were young, that’s why he was angry when he saw Harry’s back.

The hunter wasn’t angry with Harry, he was angry about what had happened to him, and when they had found him, Merle had taken him back to their room, Daryl had apologized for scaring him, he promised to try to never do it again.

Merle said he would make damn sure that his brother never hurt or scared him again, even when the man didn’t have to, he was looking out for Harry, it made him incredibly grateful.

It made him want to get them all out so they could continue to live how they wanted to.

This doctor shouldn’t have the final say in their lives, he was as good as murdering them, keeping them trapped in a building that was going to decontaminate, as far as Harry understood, it was a really terrible thing that would kill them.

With everyone arguing and pleading with the doctor who was nowhere near being convinced to give them a chance, Harry felt like it was hopeless, he wished with all his heart that they would be able to get out.

He gave into the tears and broke down crying, he wanted everyone to be safe and to be able to leave the building, but the time was drawing closer and closer to zero the longer they were there. He couldn’t stop the tears, and if he were about to die with the rest of the group he didn’t care much to try.

The tears were blurring his vision, and he couldn’t see anymore, he took off his glasses and wiped them on his shirt, it did no good, the tears were making it too hard for him to see anything, he guessed at least he wouldn’t see it coming when it happened now.

“Open the damn door!” He heard Daryl scream.

Shane had run at the door with a fire axe, Harry had quickly ducked out of the way as the man began to swing it to pound on the door, trying to get it open.

T-Dog had tossed an axe to Daryl who caught it easily, he joined Shane, both trying to destroy the door, pounding away on the metal.

Harry scattered away, moving to stay with Sophia and Carol so he wasn’t in the way.

“You should’ve left well enough alone it would have been so much easier,” Jenner told the group.

“Easier for who?” Lori snarled at the man,

“All of you. You know what’s out there. A short brutal life and agonizing death.” The doctor said before he turned to Andrea, “Your—your sister—what was her name?” He asked gently.

“Amy” the blond replied with tears in her eyes.

“Amy. You know what this does. You’ve seen it. Is that what you really want for your wife and son?” Jenner asked Rick.

“I don’t want this!”  The ex-sheriff denied it, Harry agreed with the man, this was no way to die, trapped in a room and scared, it was cruel.

Across the room Shane had stopped hitting the door when he realized, they weren’t even leaving a mark on it.

“Can’t even make a dent,” he moaned.

“Those doors are designed to withstand a rocket launcher,” Jenner told the man.

Daryl turned and raised the axe he was holding “Well, your head ain’t!” The hunter shouted only to be stopped by the other men in the room, T-Dog took the axe away from Daryl so he couldn’t hurt their only way out.

The group was running out of ideas and there was not much choice left, it was looking ever more hopeless as the timer ticked closer and closer to zero with every second.

“You do want this. Last night you said you knew it was just a matter of time before everybody you loved was dead.” Jenner barked at Rick making the others shocked to hear what the other man said.

“What? You really say that? After all you’re big talk?” Shane asked in denial.

Rick turned to his wife with a sad sigh, “I had to keep hope alive, didn’t I?” He asked the woman.

“There is no hope. There never was.” Jenner drawled.

Harry didn’t believe that; he had plenty of hope, he had it his whole life.

When he was very little he hoped he could one day be good enough for the Dursley family, then as he got older he hoped for someone to come and rescue him from his horrid relatives, he had often hoped that the Dursleys had lied when they told him his parents were dead and he wished one day they could show up and take him away.

He hoped his cousin would leave him alone to get his schoolwork done in peace, he hoped he would one day make a friend that his cousin wouldn’t be able to scare off, now he hoped that everyone survived and could move on from this.

Rick seemed to have the same idea as Harry,

“There’s always hope. Maybe it won’t be you, maybe not here but somebody somewhere” he said only to be interrupted by Andrea who snapped at the man.

“What part of “Everything is gone” do you not understand?”

“Listen to your friend. She gets it. This is what takes us down. This is our extinction event.” The Doctor informed the group, that it looked like he wasn’t going to ever accept that they didn’t want this.

Many of the group were crying, clinging to each other, and pleading to be let out.

Merle stood off to the side with Daryl both trying to not show any emotion, Daryl was still angry as he paced like a caged animal, Merle was talking to his brother in hushed tones, Harry couldn’t tell what he was saying.

While Harry was trying to focus on the brothers, he missed Shane grabbing a shotgun, he was startled badly when the man began to shoot the computer screens and yell.

Rick had charged at the angry man and managed to get the gun away from him, Shane still wanted to fight or kill the doctor himself but he only stopped trying when Rick hit him with the gun.

“Are you done now? Are you done?” Rick asked, standing over the other officer as he lay on the floor.

“Yeah, I guess we all are,” Shane responded losing all the fight he had in him.

Rick handed the gun off to T-Dog who was standing close by, everyone was watching Rick now and the man calmly assessed everyone in the room.

“I think you’re lying,” Rick said suddenly to the Doctor.

“What?” The man responded in confusion.

Rick moved closer to the despairing man.

“You’re lying about no hope. If that were true, you’d have bolted with the rest or taken the easy way out. You didn’t. You chose the hard path. Why?” Rick asked, he was looking genuinely interested in what the doctor had to say.

“It doesn’t matter.” The Doctor replied in a small voice.

“It does matter, it always matters, you stayed when others ran. Why?” Rick tried again, Harry looked at the Doctor, it looked like Rick had hit a sore spot with the man as he was glaring at the ex-sliff and getting enraged at his question.

“Not because I wanted to, I made a promise.” The man said before he pointed at the large screen, “To her, my wife.” The woman of the group gasped at the information that the lady on the screen who had turned was the doctor’s wife.

“Test subject 19 was your wife?” Lori asked in astonishment.

“She begged me to keep going as long as I could. how could I say no?” Jenner asked, he had begun to cry now, the thought of his late wife making him sad with the reminder of her passing.

“She was dying. It should’ve been me on that table. I wouldn’t have mattered to anybody. She was a loss to the world. Hell, she ran this place. I just worked here. In our field, she was an Einstein, me? I’m just… Edwin Jenner. She could’ve done something about this. Not me.” Jenner despaired, the anger the man had been consumed with tapered off into all-consuming misery.

“Your wife didn’t have a choice, you do, that’s…that’s all we want—a choice, a chance,” Rick said gently to the grieving man, Harry could see that whatever Rick was doing it looked like it was working as the Doctor kept looking down at the keypad, and then looking around at all the groups faces.

Looking at all the tears that were falling and the fear the man was inciting, he was seeing the fear and terror he was creating.

“Let us keep trying as long as we can,” Lori asked, she bent to plant a kiss on her son’s hair as she held him secure in her arms.

I told you topsides locked down, I can’t open those.” Jenner said as he walked back to the security pad to unlock the door.

As soon as the shutter was up Merle grabbed his and Daryl’s bag, his brother grabbing his crossbow. The older man ran over and scooped Harry into his arms before heading for the now open door and heading on through, Daryl shouting for everyone to hurry up behind them.

Once they made it to the lobby Merle placed Harry down on the ground as he joined Daryl and T-dog in banging against the doors to try to open them, they were so close to being out, one more door and they could run for the cars and get away, but the door was solid and nothing they did was putting a dent in them, much like the shutter that trapped them in moments ago.

Shane tried the gun again, but it didn’t do enough damage to allow them to get free. Harry could feel the panic begin to bubble up again.

“The glass won’t break?” Sophia asked in a panic next to Harry, she was in a similar state, Carl as well.

All three of the kids couldn’t even help in any way, it was a scary situation, the adults were all panicky and frustrated, the situation was not looking any better.

Carol had run up to Rick and passed him something from in her bag. Before she was hurrying back, ushering Harry and Sophia back away from the windows of the lobby.

Everyone but Rick took cover while he put the item on the windowsill. He looked terrified as he began to run toward them yelling at them to take cover and get down.

There was a loud boom sound and Harry could see the room was covered in dust. Carol and Sophia had gotten up and ran toward the area Rick had run from, quickly so he wasn’t left behind Harry got up, coughing at the dust, and took off to follow them.

The window in the corner was broken, wide enough for them to get out.

The group began to run toward the area they had left the cars in, there were walkers around now, more probably coming due to the noise of the explosion that broke the window.

As he was running to catch up Harry was surprised when Daryl came up next to him and chopped at a walker who was too close for comfort to Harry, while he was panting in panic Daryl bent down and lifted him into his arms as the man continued to run toward the vehicles.

Shane and Rick were shooting at walkers that were advancing and getting into their path. Lori had Carl close as they ran, and Carol was holding Sophia’s hand in a death grip.

Daryl got to his truck at the same time as Merle did, it looked like the older man had been keeping more walkers back.

Rick got his family, Carol and Sophia into the RV and was about to start the engine when Lori yelled at him to wait.

Over at the building, Dale and Andrea emerged from the broken window and began to make a run for the cars.

They got over halfway before they were ducking for cover and the building behind them exploded in a loud and enormous ball of fire.

—————————————————————

In a small damp cell, on a miserable island in the North Sea, a black dog trembled, it was freezing in the wet cell and the dog was very skinny, it was starving itself to fit through the bars on the cell door.

The reason was that a few weeks prior the human guards informed the prisoners of the island, of a deadly virus that was spreading through the entire world and that they were going to be left for the Dementors.

The guards left and never returned, abandoning the island to the care of the Dementors. No word from the outside world, no more information about the virus and what it does, about how it kills.

That was until, one of the inmates in a cell across from the black dog died, he had been weak for a long time, and with the feeding from the Dementors and the poor conditions they lived in, the man died quietly in his cell.

But to the black dog’s astonishment, the man rose again, he was like an Infiri, but the dog knew no black magic had been performed, he would have sensed it.

This man rose as an Infiri all on his own, luckily the dead man was still in his cell and couldn’t get out.

It made the Dementors give them a wide breath now, it was so unlike the creatures to avoid people, the dog was still given his meal, but the Dementor who brought it hurried away almost like it was scared, the dog had never seen anything like it.

The inmate in the cell across from the dog was only the first, four other inmates fell to the same fate as the first.

The dog knew this was the virus the guards were talking about, it had to be. He needed to find his Godson, he needed to know if his pup was safe from this. He had to get free and find his friend. The only one left of his childhood, he hoped he was alive, he hoped that if this was out there and killing people, his friend and Godson were safe.

So, he was starving himself and when he was thin enough, he would fit through the bars on his cell door, once free he would find them. He will not give up, he has to keep his promos to James, and he has to protect his Godson at all costs.

NOTES:

This chapter was hard to add Harry and Merle into, it just kept wanting to flow like the show, without them in it, it took a bit to get my mind around.

I hope you like the added bit at the bottom, I’ll be writing more about the wizarding world events in small parts as we go along as most of my story idea was from season two and on.

Let me know what you think,

And as always
