Act 2 Chapter 3

Unease clung to Koumei as he entered his palace for the first time since last night, he rubbed at his face tiredly and moved towards the stairwell only to pause as laughter exploded from Iris's studio. Head tilting at the sound as a small smile formed, he turned and began to head that way as a maid quickly rushed over to him, "M'lord! Do you need anything? I-"

Steps halting for a second, Koumei glanced at the maid, "No, I'm...alright," He shook his head lightly though glanced towards the partially open door of Iris's studio as more laughter spilled out, "Is there anything I should be aware of?"

Brightening as a warm smile formed, the maid nodded, "Lady Iris requested some more art supplies. We've sent someone to get them," She looked towards the door as a fond look crossed her face, "Prince Kouha and Princess Kougyoku are here. Apparently, Lady Iris is giving them an art lesson."

"Ah, yes," Koumei found himself smiling as Iris's familiar peals of laughter echoed through the hall, "The lessons. I'd almost forgotten..." He resumed walking towards the door, "Thank you for updating me, you may resume your duties though please ensure that my office is restocked with ink and quills...I'm going to need it,"

As the maid scurried off to begin her work, Koumei felt a grimace form once again as he stepped the last few feet toward Iris's studio. Even with the cheerful sounds spilling from that door, he found his thoughts drawn towards what had been discussed until not even two hours ago. Fingers twitching as he felt an aching need to see Iris even if it was only for a few minutes before he finally went to rest, the wish to see her if only to see if it would banish some of the bitter taste that had formed in the back of his throat. As he reached the door and nudged it open, he peered inside and slowly found himself smiling at the sight that lay before him.

With a bright smile on her face, Iris looked content as she bounced around the room helping his siblings with the clumsily forming art pieces in front of them. Neither of them had anything truly resembling an actual scene, Kougyoku and Kouha were engrossed in their art which was a sight to see. The unease that had clung to him moments ago began to dissipate, replaced by the harmonious cadence of shared laughter and artistic expression. Despite her shy nature, Kougyoku had seemingly opened up around Iris and was bantering with Kouha. Kouha seemed surprisingly engaged in the artistic endeavor and asked intelligent questions of Iris. The studio, bathed in the soft morning light, held a different energy—one of camaraderie and shared purpose. Shoulders losing their tension the longer he lingered, Koumei felt as if the night's tensions had been a simple dream. Eventually pulling himself away with a mental sigh, he began heading upstairs to his room.

Jolting in surprise halfway up the stairs as arms wound around his waist, Koumei glanced back to see Iris, "Iris..."

Worry and concern filled her eyes, Iris's arms tightened as she murmured, "I'd scold you for not just coming in, but..." She eyed him for a long moment and her eyes narrowed, "You didn't come back last night, did you?"

Despite his initial wish to lie and assure her that he had, Koumei nodded, "I did not...Father kept us until not even two hours ago."

Expression twisting further as confusion and curiosity battled with her concern, Iris asked him, "Why did he keep you so long? Or...," A flicker of doubt entered her eyes and he loathed the sight of it, "Is this something I'm not supposed to know?"

Carefully turning in the loose grip Iris had on his waist, Koumei was semi-grateful that his staircase had wide stairs as he laid a hand on one of her arms, "I will tell you why later. Admittedly this is likely something that probably should be kept secret, but..." He hated what was about to come out of his mouth, "We might need your help, Iris."

Eyes widening as surprise filled them, Iris's grip loosened, "You...might need my help?"

Gaze meeting Iris's even as he felt a pang of anger towards the situation, Koumei nodded as he finally curled a hand around her wrist and felt steady for the first time since entering that room last night, "Yes though I can't give you any details right now...not when I've yet to rest," He hadn't felt this tired in a long while, "Hell, when we don't even have all the details."

Expression shifting back to concern, Iris pursed her lips, "Koumei..." A look of hesitation flashed through her eyes before she shook her head, "While I won't agree to help outright...you know that I'll do my best to support you in any way I can. Just," She tilted her head and gave him this look that made his heart feel warm and ache all at the same time, "...please promise me that you won't shut me out completely."

Gratitude wove its way through him, Koumei reached up to cup her cheek, "I promise, Iris. I won't shut you out," Iris smiled at him, and if he hadn't been so damn tired he'd have probably kissed her right then even with the situation going on, "Once I've gotten a clearer picture, I'll talk with you...explain things, alright?"

"I'll hold you to it," Iris released him after a moment and he reluctantly released her wrist, "Now go get some rest, you look like you're about to pass out,"

Snorting softly as that wasn't too far from the truth, Koumei removed his hand from her cheek, "I feel it."

Starting to walk down the stairs, Iris paused after a few steps before glancing back up at him, "When you wake up, I'll tell you about how these two are doing with their lesson. I have a feeling you could use something a few lighthearted moments."

"That would be nice," Koumei smiled down at her.

"Have a good rest, Koumei," Iris waved to him before turning and walking away.

Watching her go for a long moment and wishing that she would just come to bed with him, Koumei turned and resumed ascending the stairs feeling warm for the first time since he'd left the palace last night.

"So...an assassin is running around?" Iris looked between Koumei and Kouen feeling a bolt of unease creep through her, "That's why you looked so uneasy earlier..."

Not long after Koumei had woken up and his younger siblings had left for the day, Kouen had arrived and they'd all sat down to eat a meal together. Withdrawing into the upstairs sitting room, Kouen had finally explained what had caused their father to call them away last night. The solemn expression on his face, Kouen informed her, "Yes, it seems that way. Three higher-up nobles were murdered with another injured to the point they were forced into a coma, Gyokuen has sources that have begun finding information pointing to an assassin."

Lips pursing as she crossed her arms, Iris narrowed her eyes, "But you don't believe her sources?"

"No," Koumei shook his head, "But if there is even a chance of an assassin being active, we need to take action. Ignoring whatever our Father might want us to do, we can't risk our siblings coming to harm let alone you," Iris felt warmth fill her chest at that, "So we're going to be increasing security around our palaces and ensuring our siblings do the same,"

Standing from where she'd been perched on one of the plush couches, Iris began to pace, "You mentioned possibly needing my help...did you want me to see if I could find whoever this is? Verify whatever information your stepmother is feeding you all?" She cupped her chin, "It won't be easy, I don't exactly have much knowledge of the area since neither of you has had time to lead me around and Kouha has only recently returned..." She heard a low sigh from Koumei, "Koumei?"

"Iris, I..." He hesitated for a moment before finally saying, "We want your help, but there are risks," She turned to him with a quizzical look, "One such risk is our stepmother possibly trying to pin this on you,"

"Of those killed two 'happened' to be thorns in her side," Kouen added as he crossed his arms, "With you being an outsider and people rarely seeing you outside of our palaces, it's far more convenient for her to cast blame on you," an irritated look appeared on his face, "So no matter what we do, we'll have to be careful,"

Absorbing what was said, Iris rubbed at her face, "Fucking hell, I thought complicated bullshit like that would be left in the Goulon empire, but...yeah, I should've guessed I'd be wrong," She went to grab her untouched glass of wine and took a sip, "But still," She looked at Kouen and Koumei with a frown, "I know that an assassin...even a potential one is dangerous to have running around. Risky or not, I'm willing to help besides," She offered them a wry grin, "It's not like I haven't pulled off my fair share of bullshit plans. Your stepmother is probably expecting a pretty little noble bitch with a habit of painting. She isn't expecting an actual assassin capable of using magic and able to act as a spy much less turn into a dragon."

Chuckling at her candid response, Kouen leaned forward as he uncrossed his arms, "You do have a point," Iris smirked at him, "Our stepmother might find herself in for a surprise if she underestimates you," He held out a hand to her and she set down her wine glass on the table before walking over to him, "Still, we have to tread carefully. The less attention we draw, the better."

Taking Kouen's hand, Iris smiled as he pulled her to sit down beside him. Leaning into his side, she nodded, "When lives are on the line, I'm always cautious. I will say this break in not using my skills was nice, but we wouldn't want them to get rusty."

Snorting at her, Koumei shook his head, "I highly doubt you'd ever let yourself get rusty," Iris shot him a playful grin, "Now," He gave her a stern look and she straightened a bit knowing they were back on the serious talk, "As you've decided to lend us your help, we'll do our best to keep attention off of you," She nodded at that though a grimace formed at his next words, "If the situation gets too risky, we might have to rethink your involvement."

Opening her mouth to argue, Iris faltered as Kouen added, "Your safety is important to us, Iris," He cupped her chin and she was gently coaxed into looking at him, "We value your skills and what you bring to the table...I don't want you to ever doubt that," She nodded slowly, "But we won't let you face undue risks."

There was a shadow that went across Kouen's eyes, Iris reached out to touch his cheek, "Kouen..."

"You've already taken more than a few undue risks because we weren't quick enough..." The words were low enough that if Iris didn't have enhanced hearing she likely wouldn't have heard them.

But she did and her eyes widened, Iris almost went to ask what he meant when the memory of the final fight in Astoria went through her mind. Being speared through the chest by Lord Habi, the phantom ache that thought caused made the scar ache. Hand going to her chest where the scar rested, she saw Kouen's eyes follow the movement and swallow harshly. Voice soft as she felt a hand settle on her shoulder, she murmured, "When it comes to those I care for, I will risk myself, Kouen," Kouen's eyes met hers, "But if it will make you feel more at ease..." The words were harder to get out than she expected, "I will...I'll agree to whatever measures you think are necessary though try to remember that there are different circumstances here."

"We will," Koumei assured Iris as he squeezed her shoulder gently, "We'll find a balance-"

Freezing as Kouen's hand dropped away from Iris's cheek as she turned to look at Koumei, the feeling of his fingers brushing against her neck was jarring. The calloused pads of his fingers were warm against her skin...far warmer than the collar that had once rested there. But just like a summer breeze, the touch was gone and she was able to breathe again. Slowly turning to look at Kouen, she saw him peering at her with an apologetic look, "Iris, I-"

Shaking her head, Iris shifted away from him, "Don't...I never really made it clear verbally that my neck bothered me," She stood up and moved to grab her wine glass, "How about we just move on to planning out how this is supposed to go? I-"

"Iris," Koumei's gentle tone interrupted Iris, "While we do need to discuss the assassin," She slowly turned towards them and winced at the stern look on Koumei's face and the apologetic one on Kouen's, "We need to talk about what just happened. Open communication, remember,"

Breathing in deeply, Iris contemplated just walking out of the room before deciding against it. She wasn't a child even if it would probably make her feel better for a few moments. She slowly moved to sit back down though this time settled at the other end of the couch from Kouen. Ignoring the way he visibly winced, she settled the wine glass on the table in front of her, "Open communication..."

Curling her legs up, Iris pulled them against her chest as Koumei asked, "So what exactly happened?"

Swallowing heavily as she looked away from the two, Iris admitted, "Even if the collar's gone, I can still...There are days when it still feels like it's there," She felt her eyes burn though managed to force back any tears that tried to fall, "Especially after nights when the memories get bad, I don't...I can't handle having my neck touched right now."

"But the makeup..." Kouen's voice was soft.

"Kouha did it himself and made sure it was light enough that I could barely feel it being applied," Iris's chin dug into her knees, "He figured out that there was a problem after all the necklaces he tried to shove at me ended up being tossed into a random corner...or wound up missing," A low laugh left her, "That brat is a lot smarter than most people think,"

"That he is..." Koumei let out a low sigh and Iris jolted as he settled on the ground before her on his knees, "Iris," She stared at him with wide eyes, "I'm sorry that we didn't realize you were going through this...And with you living here, I should have-"

Shaking her head, Iris started to reach out to him only to stop herself, "I-" She clenched her fingers into a fist as her hand dropped back down to the couch, "Hiding what bothers me...the huge shit? That's what I've done since I was little...what I was taught," She jolted as Koumei grabbed her hand and gently uncurled her fingers, "Only one who managed to figure things out was Nev."

"Still, we should have realized something was going on," Koumei murmured.

Surprise filled her as Kouen joined Koumei on the floor, Iris stared at him as he told her, "We should have been more perceptive...I should have," A look of guilt filled his eyes, "If we had asked...taken the time to speak with you, we might've started to help you sooner," He offered her an apologetic gaze that held glints of determination, "If you're willing to still trust me...I want to help you through it. We both do."

Despite part of her hissing to deny him, Iris slowly uncurled the arm wrapped around her leg and extended a hand to Kouen earning a surprised look. She spoke softly, "I...I do trust you," She felt her chest warm as he grasped her hand in his with a look of adoration, "I don't want to keep dealing with..." She struggled to form the words, "What happened," She felt Koumei tug her gently and slowly shifted until she was sitting on the ground with them, "It's a lot...And with what's going on-"

"We'll figure it out," Koumei offered Iris a small smile, "After all, it's not like we don't usually have a lot on our plates anyway, and..." He glanced towards Kouen for a moment before looking back at her, "With you...it never feels like a lot,"

Cheeks warming alongside her chest, Iris murmured, "I...alright," She cleared her throat, "But we should focus on figuring out where to start with the assassin, it feels like a pressing matter now that the emotional stuff has been aired out."

Snorting at her wording, Koumei nodded as Kouen added, "Perhaps we should sit on the couches and chairs as well. While I don't mind the floor, I'd much rather be comfortable."

Unable to help it, Iris giggled and shared a grin with Koumei as Kouen smirked.

"Ah, Prince Kouen," Kouen tried not to stiffen at the sound of his stepmother's voice, "How lucky I am to catch you," He slowly turned towards her, "Heading to your office?"

"Yes...Mother," Kouen's tone was neutral despite his dearest wish to shove a sharp object through the woman's heart, "I have matters to attend to as you're likely aware,"

Smile light as her eyes narrowed, Gyokuen clicked her tongue, "Ah, I shouldn't keep you then though if I might ask," She made a show of looking around, "Where is that darling girl...the one you introduced during that party? I would have thought given what's been going you would have had her accompanying you."

Jaw tightening at the mention of Iris, Kouen forced himself to remain composed and felt a bolt of gratitude towards Phenex as his female Djinn began to sing a soothing tune. Neutral facade firmly in place as he refused to show this woman any sign of discomfort, he replied, "Lady Iris has other matters to attend and Kouha wished to spend time with her when he finished his duties," He saw Gyokuen's eyes narrow a bit further, "But I assure you, she quite capable of handling herself."

Smile never wavering, Gyokuen's eyes gleamed with malic, "Well that certainly is interesting to hear, but given where she was before you found her, I shouldn't be too surprised," A sigh left the spider, "It's just a shame she isn't here. I was hoping to get to know her better. After all, family should be acquainted with one another."

Remaining unfazed even as confusion welled up, Kouen snorted softly, "Lady Iris is not family, Mother. She is a valued companion and ally."

Letting out a chuckle that sent unpleasant shivers down his spine, Gyokuen covered her mouth with a fan, "Of course, Prince Kouen. I merely find her presence intriguing. It's not every day we have such... interesting individuals in our midst."

Clamping down on his emotions even as thoughts began to race through his mind, Kouen replied smoothly, "If there's nothing else, Mother, I have pressing matters to attend to."

Tongue clicking as she released a gusty sigh, Gyokuen tilted her head, "Very well, Kouen. Do take care. Rakushou can be a treacherous place, especially for those who are not vigilant."

Inwardly twitching as he watched her walk away with those odd priests following after like the little lap dogs they were, Kouen's eyes narrowed as he resumed walking. While he had made sure that the women's men hadn't been able to join them in the Goulon Empire, the interaction he'd just had with Gyokuen told him that she was beginning to learn what had happened. Or she was trying to weasel information out of him by getting reactions, the ploy was something he wouldn't put past the woman. Thoughts shifting to the thinly veiled threats that Gyokuen made, he felt a dark frown form on his face and didn't bother smoothing it out as anger surged through him. There was an unsettling interest in Iris hidden beneath the threats, Gyokuen wanted something though that would likely be hidden until the woman thought she'd gotten what she wanted.

Glancing to the side, Kouen listened as Seishuu asked, "My King, do you wish for me to inform Prince Koumei of what Empress Gyokuen has said?"

"Ask him to meet me in my office," Kouen decided after a moment, "Then find Kouha and Iris, I do not want them wandering around without someone I trust,"

Seishuu nodded in acknowledgment, "Understood, my King. I will relay your message to Prince Koumei and ensure Prince Kouha and Lady Iris are safely accompanied."

As Kouen continued toward his office, his mind churned with the implications of Gyokuen's words. He couldn't afford to dismiss her interest in Iris as mere curiosity. There was a calculated motive behind Gyokuen's actions, and he needed to decipher it before any harm befell Iris. Iris would likely be annoyed with him for sending Seishuu to accompany her and Kouha until she heard why, but as they agreed, it would be a compromise.

Shaking her head as she watched Kouha practically bounce in place, Iris crossed her arms as she walked at a far more sedate pace behind him. Finally going out to explore Rakushou and get the lay of the land was nice, she had initially felt a bit uneasy knowing that she'd also be using the time to gather information. Her gaze wandered over the colorful displays of goods, the tantalizing scents of various foods, and the diverse crowd that filled the market, the overall lively attitude everyone seemed to hold made her want to smile. Compared to the tense atmosphere that had taken over both Koumei and Kouen's palaces, it was a nice change and made some of the tension in her shoulders melt away.

Turning her head back towards Kouha as he darted towards yet another stall, Iris let out a low chuckle and moved towards him, "Are you sure you're not planning on buying anything, Kouha?"

Turning towards her with an excited gleam in his eyes, Kouha's grinned at Iris, "Who, me? Well, maybe just a few things," He turned to pick up a bracelet and turned it over in his hands for a few seconds before dropping it back down, "Like a couple of souvenirs," He let out a low laugh as his grin turned mischievous, "After all, I've got to savor the memories while I can."

He was enjoying the break from his duties, Iris shook her head in amusement, "Souvenirs, huh?" A playful smile crossed her lips, "I didn't know princes were into collecting trinkets."

Letting out a laugh that seemed to echo through the air, Kouha's grin widened, "You'd be surprised, Iris. Even princes need a break from the serious stuff. And who knows, maybe I'll find something amazing."

Shaking her head in amusement, Iris just followed after him as he moved onto another stall. But as she was reaching his side, a flicker of movement caught her attention as long-held instincts began to hiss that something was amiss. Moving more quickly to reach Kouha's side as her fingers trailed down to one of the daggers hidden within her clothes, she began to scan the crowded market. Her eyes narrowed as a figure came into view, they moved swiftly with more purpose than anyone else in the crowd. Heartbeat quickening as she moved closer to Kouha who seemed to be oblivious to the danger, she inwardly cursed as the boy moved to another stall.

Just as she was about to call out to him and caution the boy against moving, an object came sailing through the air toward them with deadly speed. Time seemed to slow as her training kicked in and with a swift motion, Iris pushed Kouha out of the way. Biting back a hiss of pain as a blade lodged into her arm, she focused on the threat at hand, "Kouha," She inwardly groaned at the chaos erupted around them and saw their assailant slipping into the crowd, "Stay close."

There were screams and shouts, Iris couldn't keep an eye on the one who attacked them as they kept disappearing the moment her eyes managed to lock on them again. As another projectile flew towards them and she began trying to pull Kouha away from their current position, Seishuu appeared out of nowhere and blocked it. Sharp eyes scanning the area around them, he spoke in a tone that cut through the chaos, "Prince Kouha, Lady Iris, we must leave this place at once!"

Adrenaline pumping through her veins, Iris nodded and began leading Kouha toward where the carriage they'd brought was waiting with Seishuu acting as their guard. Any incoming projectiles were blocked few that they were, Kouha finally spoke once they'd left the chaotic market, "I-Iris, I didn't help-"

"Don't worry about it," Iris kept a firm hand on him, "Considering the fact we're in your home and it should be safe, I am not surprised any response to an attack is delayed," She saw the guilt in his eyes, "Just try to do better from now on, alright? That's all you can do,"

"I-yeah," Kouha nodded as a determined gleam lit his eyes.

As they reached the carriage and got settled inside, Iris winced as the pain in her arm finally became more noticeable now that the adrenaline was subsiding. Reaching up, she gripped just below where a shuriken had become embedded in her arm. Head leaning back against the wall of the carriage, she muttered, "Fucking hell, I forgot how much being stabbed hurt."

Covering his mouth as a snort left him, Seishuu shook his head, "Lady Iris, we should tend to your arm as soon as possible."

"Y-yeah just not in a moving carriage. Did that more times than I really want to admit and it always hurts worse than if I'm on solid ground," Iris offered Seishuu a weak smile, "'Sides you should never remove a foreign object unless you're prepared to tend to the wound,"

Seishuu nodded in understanding, "Very well, Lady Iris. We'll get you proper care once we arrive at a suitable location."

Offering him a small smile, Iris glanced at Kouha as the boy spoke, "Iris, I'm sorry," He fidgeted with his fingers and kept glancing out of the carriage windows with far more paranoia than she'd ever recalled seeing, "If I'd been more aware of our surroundings...more alert..."

Offering him a reassuring smile despite the pain coming from her arm, Iris reminded him, "Hey, we all have moments when we let our guard down. The important thing is that we learn from them."

Lips pursing, Kouha nodded, "I...yeah..." He clenched his fingers into fists, "I won't let it happen again."

As the carriage continued its journey, Iris couldn't shake the feeling that the attack in the market was a sign of escalating tensions. The ease with which the assailant had disappeared into the crowd hinted at a level of skill and coordination that raised concerns. And then there's the fact that Gyokuen might have a hand in this, she wondered if the woman might be trying to take out two birds with that one attack. But there was little use in lingering on those thoughts right now, they hadn't had a chance to catch whoever it was that attacked them. Glancing at Seishuu as he spoke, she tilted her head, "Lady Iris, Prince Kouha, I do not believe it would be advisable to return to the market and to take more care in wherever you travel next," Kouha made a low sound of protest, "The threat might not be limited to the market."

As Kouha looked at Seishuu in surprise, Iris nodded in agreement, "You're right, Seishuu. We need to be on high alert until we figure out who's behind this, who their actual target was, and why."

Giving her a confused look, Kouha asked, "What do you mean by 'who their actual target was', Iris? I was their target."

Grimace forming as she knew Koumei and Kouen didn't want their younger brother to know an assassin was on the loose just yet, Iris released a low sigh. It was better to bite the bullet and just tell Kouha now. After all, they'd just been attacked and there was likely going to be more. She looked at Kouha, "Kouha, it might not be as straightforward as it seems...not with the situation going on," She saw his look of confusion, "Kouen and Koumei didn't want you to know about this just yet, but given the circumstance, I think they'll be okay with me telling you."

When she looked at him with a raised eyebrow, Seishuu raised his hands, "I cannot confirm whether my king would approve or not, but...I think it would be best if only to smooth things over."

"What is going on?" Kouha demanded with a scowl, "What are Mei and Entei hiding from me?"

Sighing as she looked at him, Iris finally said, "An assassin, Kouha," Kouha froze with his eyes going wide, "One they think might be in the pocket of your step monster," She saw a look of realization enter his eyes, "They were planning on informing you later on once we had more information but with this attack...I think it's better you know now. After all, we have no idea if Gyokuen was aiming to kill you, me, or both of us. Hell, she might've just been trying to have us incapacitated," She rubbed at her face, "Whatever the case, I'm telling you now and dealing with the consequences when your brothers find out..."

Which would be fun since Iris wasn't sure how they would react, she just hoped they wouldn't be too angry. Kouha shook his head, "But if an assassin is on the loose, why not tell me? Wouldn't it be safer?"

"I don't know, Kouha," Iris felt a small flicker of irritation, "That's a question for Kouen and Koumei,"

"Okay...But why were you willing to go out to the market with me then?" Kouha eyed her, "If there is an assassin on the loose, shouldn't you have tried to keep me inside?"

Lips pulling into a grimace, Iris met Kouha's concerned eyes, "Koumei and Kouen didn't want to cause unnecessary panic, especially when they weren't sure about the extent of the threat. Plus, we thought we could use the opportunity to gather information discreetly," She winced as the carriage went over a ridge in the road that marked the entrance into the noble section of Rakushou, "It's a delicate situation, Kouha. If they were to just give out information, it could cause a panic even if you've likely dealt with assassins before."

Mouth opening then closing as he seemed to be considering her words, Kouha finally released a sigh, "I suppose you're right. I just..." He wrinkled his nose with a look of frustration, "What do we do? I can't just sit around knowing that there's an assassin loose."

"First things first," Iris could feel the carriage slowing down, "My arm needs to get taken care of. Kouen and Koumei need to know what happened,"

Looking towards Seishuu, the gorgon-like man gave her a small nod, "I will be going to inform my king of what happened once you're safely in the hands of Prince Koumei's staff. Likely, he's still in a meeting with Prince Koumei at the current moment."

"Good," Iris sighed in relief.

As the door opened, Seishuu stepped outside first and helped Iris out before doing the same with Kouha. As soon as the first maid caught sight of her, she was ushered inside as the woman cried out for a healer to be brought around. Glancing back towards Kouha and Seishuu, she saw them waving off another concerned maid and simply getting back into the carriage before riding off. Realizing they were heading towards the main palace, she felt a small bolt of frustration but forced it down. So long as Kouen and Koumei knew what happened, it didn't matter who told them. Focusing as she was gently pushed to sit down, she wasn't able to keep herself from grimacing as a Magician approached.

"Enter," Koumei barely looked up from the paper he was currently looking over.

"Prince Koumei," A timid voice called out and he glanced up to see one of Kouen's favored messengers standing there, "Prince Kouen has asked that you join him in his office. He says it's urgent,"

Inclining his head, Koumei set down the quill he'd be about to dip in fresh ink, "I see. I'll head there now."

Confusion flickered through him, Koumei had only left Kouen's office an hour ago after they'd finished discussing what Gyokuen could want with Iris and the threat she'd made. Frowning as he pushed away from his desk, he carefully covered the paperwork in front of him before moving towards the door. As he walked, he straightened his robes and followed the messenger to Kouen's office. With the urgency in his brother's message, it meant something had happened in the short period since they'd had their meeting and his stomach sank as theories began to swirl around in his mind.

Waving off the messenger as they arrived at Kouen's door, Koumei started to walk forward and his eyes narrowed at the slightly ajar door. He gently pushed it open and stepped inside, noting the tense atmosphere that hung in the air. To his surprise, Kouha and Seishuu were also present, their expressions carrying a mix of concern and urgency. Despite his initial urge to address Kouha and ask after Iris, he focused on Kouen and kept his tone calm despite the unease swirling through him, "Kouen, you requested my presence?"

Standing by the window of his office, Kouen's expression betrayed nothing of what he was currently feeling as he turned to Koumei. Only his eyes revealed the emotions that lay beneath that carefully constructed mask, a blend of concern and seriousness that made those wine-red eyes darken, "Koumei, there's been an incident. While Kouha was showing Iris around the market...they were attacked."

Chest feeling as if one of Judar's favored icicles was piercing it, Koumei stared at his older brother in slight horror, "They were...attacked?" He narrowed his eyes and forced himself to think, "Kouha's here which means he wasn't harmed, but Iris? Is she-"

Eyes flickering with emotion, Kouen shook his head, "Iris shielded Kouha from the assailant, but she sustained injuries. According to Seishuu, she is receiving medical attention from your staff,"

Mentally sighing in relief, Koumei turned towards Kouha as his younger brother stepped forward with a determined expression on his face, "Iris is hurt, but she'll be fine. We need to find out who's behind this and why they targeted us."

Nodding to Kouha, Koumei's mind already working through what information had been given and calculating the potential implications, "We will, Kouha," He shared a glance with Kouen, "Right now, we need to know all the information you can tell us about what happened," He looked towards Seishuu, "Both of you."

Nodding to him, Seishuu straightened from his slightly slouched slump against the wall, "Of course, Prince Koumei."

"Before we do that," Kouha crossed his arms and scowled at his elder brothers, "I demand to know why I wasn't informed about the assassin threat. Iris knew, and Seishuu knew, but no one thought to let me in on it?"

Releasing a sigh as he rubbed the back of his neck, Koumei figured that either Seishuu or Iris had told Kouha what was going on after the attack. But that didn't mean he wanted to deal with it right now, they had other more important things to deal with. Glancing towards Kouen, he saw his elder brother scowling in a way that said he'd reached the end of his patience for the day. Inwardly wincing, he addressed Kouha, "Kouha, I understand your frustration. The decision not to inform you or any of our younger siblings was made to avoid unnecessary panic until we had a clearer understanding of the threat. Iris, our households, and Hakuei's were informed out of necessity," He saw Kouha's expression twist, "Now that certain circumstances have changed, we will ensure transparency moving forward."

Crossing his arms, Kouen added, "Our focus should be on addressing the current threat. We'll reassess our approach and communication within the family after we've dealt with this situation."

"But why Iris? Why does she get to-" Kouha stopped himself after a moment as his eyes went wide, "Oh fuck, she's acting as a counter, isn't she? Gathering information and if need be taking out the assassin..."

Nodding as he smiled slightly, Koumei confirmed Kouha's realization, "Exactly. Iris's skills and background make her a valuable asset in situations like these," He still felt somewhat guilty for letting her move forward in helping them, "She has experience dealing with threats, and her involvement is strategic. It was a decision made to protect not just her but all of us."

"She is capable," Kouen added as he moved to retake his seat at the desk, "And she willingly takes on these responsibilities. Given what occurred back in the Goulon Empire, we have learned to trust her judgment as she's proven herself time and time again,"

Scowl deepening, Kouha's frustration remained palpable. However, an understanding seemed to settle in as he processed the explanation. He ran a hand through his disheveled hair, eyes narrowing in thought. Muttering more to himself, Kouha breathed out, "So while you keep all of us in the dark, Iris is acting like your shadow..."

Giving Kouha a look of understanding, Koumei tried to smile, "Everything we've done since finding out about this assassin has been strategic, Kouha. And without an established network to assist her, Iris has a lot more to do if she's going to effectively help us. So don't think we're trying to leave you, out of spite, Ha. It's about utilizing our strengths as efficiently as possible."

Irritation and acceptance warred within Kouha's eyes as he nodded, the boy grumbled, "Fine, but we need to get to the bottom of this. I want to know who dared to attack Iris and why."

Kouen spoke up, his tone commanding, "Agreed. Seishuu, provide us with all the details you have. We need to act swiftly and decisively."

As Seishuu recounted what had occurred after he'd arrived at the market, Koumei's analytical mind processed the information, searching for connections and possible motives.

The room was filled with the rhythmic scraping sound of the wet stone gliding across the blade Iris held in her hand. Even though the perpetual torrent of thoughts never seemed to slow, the sound acted as a tether. She almost jumped out of her skin as Koumei's voice sounded behind her, "Iris."

Turning to face him, Iris found him standing at the entrance of her room. Concern and relief were flickering across his face, she offered him a sheepish smile, "Koumei, I didn't hear you."

"Somehow I'm not surprised given how you jumped," Koumei stepped further into the room as his eyes scanned her for a few seconds before they settled on her bandaged arm, "According to the maids, you've been in here since the healer finished. You didn't even come out for dinner apparently,"

As she impulsively shrugged, the movement caused tingles of pain to run up her arm. Wincing at the feeling, Iris shook her head, "Wasn't hungry," She looked away from him and turned to the large number of weapons scattered around her, "I felt like doing bulk weapon maintenance."

There was a slow-growing heat that began creeping through her cheeks as she realized just how many weapons she'd decided to take out and work on, the blades of each dagger, shortsword, and even her scarce long swords gleamed within the candle-light. Jolting as his hand touched her shoulder, Iris glanced at Koumei's face as he peered at her with concern etched deeply into his features, "You've been through a lot today. Are you alright?"

Meeting his eyes, Iris's stomach swirled with unease and determination, "On the physical side of things, I'll be just fine," She gestured to her bandaged arm and watched his eyes follow her movements, "While I'm sure you'll check with your healer, it wasn't that deep even if he couldn't fully heal it," She saw a flicker on confusion, "Mentally, I...I'm angry at myself," She admitted after a few moments and Koumei looked at her in confusion, "I should have kept a closer eye on our surroundings and been more careful...quicker. If I'd been even a few seconds slower, Kouha would've been hurt-"

Fingers squeezing her shoulder gently, Koumei interrupted her, "But he wasn't," Iris looked at him with a frown, "You can't carry the burden of every possible outcome on your shoulders. According to Seishuu, you reacted far quicker than even he would've been able to which says a lot about your capabilities."

"I know, but..." Iris hesitated, grappling with the lingering frustration and guilt, "Kouha didn't want to bring his attendants or Meihou...And even knowing about the assassin, I agreed," She bit her bottom lip, "I...Koumei-"

Expression soft as he interrupted her again, Koumei shushed her, "We didn't think an assassin would be brave enough to strike in the middle of the day. It was a judgment call based on the information and circumstances at the time. We all agreed that maintaining a low profile was crucial. Hindsight can be unforgiving, but it doesn't change the fact that your instincts and quick thinking protected Kouha."

"I..." Iris closed her mouth after a moment as she considered his words.

"As much as we don't want to admit it, the attack did give us a bit more information," Koumei continued with a low sigh, "Seishuu alongside some guards that were in the area when the attack happened managed to give us something about the attacker. It isn't a lot thanks to the chaos-"

"But it's something," Iris finished as she set down her wet-stone, "Okay...So while I could have made a better call...given us some more leeway when things happened, it worked out better in the end since we managed to get information," She sheathed the knife she'd been sharpening and set it down on the stack of blades waiting to be looked over as it still needed some work, "So that was what took you so long coming back today?"

Nodding with a solemn expression, Koumei dropped his hand, "Yes, dealing with the aftermath and gathering information took time. We're working on tracing the origin of the attack and identifying the assailant. The guards and Seishuu are coordinating efforts to track down any leads," He paused for a moment and his eyes drifted towards her arm, "Iris..."

Realizing what his question likely was, Iris's lips pulled into a wry smile, "It aches though if I move it in the wrong way, it hurts like I've still got a blade stuck in it."

Hand raising and starting to go towards her arm, Koumei stopped himself and his eyes met hers as he asked, "Can I...Can I take a look?"

Lips quirking as amusement and warmth filled her, Iris nodded, "Sure, go ahead though," She looked at the weapons scattered about the bed, "I should probably get up if you want to take a proper look without running the risk of getting stabbed."

Chuckling softly, Koumei smiled at her dry humor, "Yes, that might be a good idea. No need for any additional injuries today," He gestured to the chair by her dressing table, "Sit down, and let's have a look."

Carefully getting up from her bed, Iris headed over to the chair after grabbing a clean cloth. Wiping away the cleaning oils that coated her fingers as she settled down on the seat, she watched as Koumei approached her. He focused on the bandaged arm, handling it with care as he unwrapped it to inspect the wound. Wincing as cool air touched her healing wound, she looked at Koumei's face and peered at the injury. Brow furrowing as he examined it, he ran a careful finger along the not-quite pink skin at the edges, "It seems to be healing well," He murmured in relief though there was a hint of concern, "The healer did a fairly good job though it's odd that it isn't further along."

Unable to help it, Iris snorted earning a raised eyebrow from Koumei as his eyes rose to meet hers. Clicking her tongue, she admitted, "My magic is very picky when it comes to foreign magics coming near it...Neville's and my other friends are fine," She saw his look of confusion, "It doesn't exactly like it when people try to use magic on me. Even the ones that are supposedly helpful," Koumei's eyes widen in realization, "I'm pretty sure it started after I gained my animagus form, but I've only really noticed it since well..."

As she gestured towards her neck, Koumei muttered, "The collar..." He frowned slightly as confusion entered his eyes, "But Kouen could use Phenex on you without any problems, and Ashe's magicians..."

"In reverse, Ashe's magicians earned the trust of my magic," Iris almost shrugged before managing to stop herself, "As for Kouen's Phenex...My only theory is that she reminds my magic of a phoenix...specifically the one whose core once resided in my wand," She gestured to her hand where the feather was burrowed within, "But I can't confirm that, I barely remember the feeling of his magic anymore,"

Eyes dropping back to her still-healing injury, Koumei's expression shifted between one of thoughtfulness and concern, "Your magic is certainly a mysterious force, isn't it?"

Snorting softly as an amused smile played across her lips, Iris shook her head, "It can be a gift and a curse, Koumei," She watched as he began rebandaging her wound, "While it's saved my life more times than I've really cared to count, it's complicated things as well and caused such dangers."

Gently rewrapping the bandages, Koumei secured them as he offered her a soft smile, "But that's what makes you unique, Iris," She flushed at that soft look in his eyes, "Your resilience, both physical and magical, is something to be admired."

Clearing her throat as she looked away from him, Iris murmured, "You call it resilience, I call it luck."

As Koumei chuckled, the sound echoed warmly in her ears, "Perhaps it's a bit of both. Though I doubt everyone can navigate through challenges the way you do," Iris felt a hand touch her cheek and found herself being coaxed to look at Koumei, "That's something I've come to admire about you, Iris...you're able to adapt and gather together strength in ways that I've never really seen. It's amazing..."

Breathing in as warmth spread through her like hot chocolate on a cold winter's night, Iris felt the genuine admiration in his voice touch something deep within her. Those just barely understood feelings that she couldn't yet name seemed to deepen and expand, a heady feeling seemed to seep into her. Meeting his eyes, she murmured, "Koumei, I... thank you. It means a lot, especially coming from you."

His thumb brushed against her cheek, Iris found herself leaning into his touch as Koumei smiled, "For what? I'm merely speaking the truth," She felt her breath catch at those words, "You've faced challenges that I've seen break others...Yet, you still stood strong," The thumb running across her cheek ran along the marking beneath her eye, "That couldn't be luck, Iris. There's a resilience within you that goes beyond mere chance."

"I..." Iris found herself unable to come up with a reply to Koumei's sincere compliment.

Low chuckle leaving him, Koumei withdrew his hand after a long moment and his gaze turned towards the weapons scattered across her bed and part of the floor, "That is quite the arsenal, I didn't realize you carried so many."

Grabbing onto something that would allow her to speak, Iris let out a laugh, "We have certain magics that allow us to create extra spaces and shrink things," Koumei glanced at her in surprise, "The first involves enchanting objects with our magic while the second is a simple spell. I can do both though Hermione and Luna are better at them."

"Perhaps one of these days when there isn't a lot going on, we could sit down and discuss some of what you are capable of with your magic," Koumei shook his head in amusement, "Would you like some help? While I might not wield blades very often anymore, I do know how to maintain them,"

Cheeks flushing, Iris shook her head, "I was mostly doing maintenance on them to clear my mind and make it easier to organize my thoughts though..." She eyed the pile that still needed to be worked on, "I really shouldn't leave the job undone..."

"I don't mind helping you," Koumei assured her with a warm smile, "And as you said, it does help clear the mind. After today, I could use that,"

Letting out a low sigh, Iris nodded, "Alright though give me a second to find my other kit, I have a few weapons that need special maintenance."

Moving to the chest where her weapons were usually stored, Iris dug through it for her second cleaning kit before clearing a space for Koumei. Side by side, they worked their way through the weapons she had left in her pile. She glanced at Koumei when he asked, "Where did you get this?"

Her eyes went to the ornate dagger in his hand, a river dragon etched into the gold-toned blade. A smile forming as she let out a low laugh, Iris admitted, "I stole that," Koumei stared at her in surprise, "That asshole I killed before we faced the jackass? That belonged to him though he'd taken it from a noble woman after doing something that he should've been killed for."

Expression turning dark, Koumei frowned at her, "So when you were talking to him..."

"I meant every single word," Iris's expression darkened as she thought back to the asshole, "The Jackass tried to have me clean up after the asshole's messes only to find out that I would willingly let him inflict any punishment. Half the reason my scar is so bad...why I have certain scars, is from disobeying certain orders,"

Hand touching her shoulder, Koumei set the dagger aside, "Iris..."

"But the asshole is dead as is the jackass," Iris smiled even as her fingers tightened around the dagger in her hand and the wet stone, "So-"

"Do you want to get rid of the dagger?" Koumei asked earning a startled look, "Because we can have it melted down...I can even have the ingot made from it discarded,"

Chest warming even as she continued to gaze at the ornate dagger, Iris hesitated. The weapon held a dark history, a reminder of the cruelty she had faced and the defiance that had defined her. Yet, there was a weight lifted off her shoulders with the demise of its former owner. Contemplating her answer, she found herself looking at Koumei and slowly coming to a decision. Biting her bottom lip, she look at Koumei, "If it is discarded, I want a new dagger. One that...is made here," Koumei looked at her in surprise and she turned back to the dagger in her hands, "Something that doesn't hold the same memories...a new promise."

Arms encircling her as a low sound left his throat, Koumei hugged her against his chest as a low clatter sounded. Warmth surged within her chest, Iris looked up at Koumei's face as he murmured, "A new promise, then. We'll forge a dagger that carries the strength of your resilience and the determination to face the future unburdened by the past."

Nodding in appreciation of his words, Iris's eyes met Koumei's as he peered down at her. There was a vulnerability in his eyes that mirrored what she currently felt, a sense of understanding. She felt a surge of courage welling within her, a desire to bridge the remaining distance between them. Coaxed by that courage, she pressed a kiss to Koumei's lips earning a soft sound. There was a moment when Koumei didn't move, it almost made her pull away until he began to respond as his arms tightened. Slowly she pulled away from him, a soft flush decorating her cheeks. There was an intensity in his gaze, the warmth was almost blinding as he smiled at her.

Looking away from him, Iris cleared her throat, "W-we should get back to-"

"Iris," Koumei interrupted her, his tone gentle, yet coaxing, "You kissed me,"

Blushing deeper, Iris stammered, "I-I did. Sorry, I just..."

Koumei's smile softened as he reached out, gently tilting her chin to meet his gaze, "You don't need to apologize. It was a pleasant surprise."

As his thumb brushed against her cheek, Iris averted her eyes, "I... I just felt like I needed to do it."

Koumei chuckled softly, "And I'm glad you did."

Both of them glanced towards the door as a knock sounded, Iris heard a small huff leave Koumei though he said nothing as she called out, "Enter!"

Opening the door, a maid bowed lightly, "Prince Koumei, Lady Iris," The woman offered them a warm smile, "I apologize if I'm interrupting anything," She glanced at the blades decorating the bed in confusion before shaking her head, "But Prince Koumei, the food you asked the kitchen staff to make is ready."

"Thank you, we'll be down shortly," Koumei informed the maid earning a light smile.

"I'll alert the staff to be ready," The maid bowed again before leaving.

"Food?" Iris turned to Koumei with a confused look.

Getting up from the bed, Koumei explained, "When I heard you hadn't eaten, I ordered them to make food for us both. I haven't exactly eaten either," She gave him a look, "We were quite busy trying to figure everything out. I'm certain En is likely only just eating as well."

Starting to press a hand to her face, Iris stopped herself as the scent of oil filled her nose. Mentally groaning, she grabbed a clean cloth and began wiping away the oil coating her fingers, "Somehow, I'm not surprised. I almost think it might be a good idea to show up to the main palace at random just to make sure you guys eat," Koumei stared at her in surprise, "I guess if you had them make food, we should go eat-"

As her stomach rumbled, Iris flushed earning a laugh from Koumei. Shooting him a small glare, she tossed her cleaning cloth at him and stood up as he chuckled, "We'll eat then come back and finish off these weapons."
