Act 1 Chapter 21
The soft glow of the secondary library in Astoria's castle provided a comforting backdrop as Iris lounged on the fainting couch. The air held a sense of familiarity, with Hermione, Ron, Luna, Ginny, and Neville scattered among the shelves, their expressions light and carefree. Rare as it was to see, it warmed her heart that such expressions would be more frequent now that they were free of the bastard who'd chained her for the last three years. Shifting to look at Hermione, she cocked an eyebrow as the brunette murmured, "So...what's next?"
"What do you mean?" Ginny asked from her perch on a tall shelf.
Giving Ginny a minor glare, Hermione closed the thick tome she'd been reading, "Well...Habi is dead and it looks like Ashe has things well in hand. The Kou are withdrawing within the next week..." She cast a glance around the room though her eyes slipped to Iris, "The question is where do we go? Do we stay here or...go elsewhere? Explore this world and see what all exists. Maybe...maybe find a way back to our old world..."
Heart thudding against her chest, Iris swallowed heavily as she pushed herself into a sitting position. There was a small sense of tension within the room as those words seemed to echo, she looked around before her eyes stopped on Luna as the blonde spoke, "The threads of fate are unraveling, and the future remains elusive. Our choices will shape the tapestry of our lives."
Scratching the back of his head, Ron clicked his tongue in annoyance at the way Luna had spoken, "So what? We stay, go explore, or try finding a way home?"
Chiming in from his place beside Luna, Neville set down the book he was reading, "We've got a chance to explore this world and see what it has to offer. We could even find a place to call home, it might not be the one we knew, but it would be home."
Leaning forward rather dangerously, Ginny spoke with her eyes gleaming, "I say we take this opportunity. Who knows what wonders and adventures are waiting for us out there?"
Nodding thoughtfully, Hermione tapped the book in her hands lightly, "It's true. We've been through so much, and now that we're free, why not make the most of it? And besides, who's to say there isn't a way to find our way back home while exploring this world?"
There was a pause and she realized everyone was looking at her, Iris flushed slightly as she admitted, "Kouen offered me to come to Kou...I...I want to go. You all are welcome to come as well-"
"Iris," Hermione cut her off with a deep frown, "Are you sure going to Kou is a good idea? Especially so soon after finally getting rid of Habi?" She frowned at the brunette in confusion, "Think about it carefully, the Kou have a reputation, and going there, especially with the princes might lead to some problems...problems we don't need right now."
Expression serious as he nodded his head, Ron frowned at Iris, "I agree with Hermione, Ris. Kou or not, it's too soon for us to jump into another potentially dangerous situation."
Biting her bottom lip, Iris admitted that they might be right though she still wanted to go. She looked over at Luna as the blonde spoke once more, "The moon tells me that paths diverge for a reason, but they also converge when the time is right," The blonde's cornflower blue eyes were alight with a knowing look as she peered at Iris, "Perhaps we should consider exploring different paths for a while and see where they lead."
Nodding in agreement, Neville leaned back against his seat, "Rushing into things isn't a good idea, we know where that can lead," Iris stuck her tongue out at him earning a smirk, "But...I think Luna is right on this one. We all seem to want different things right now," She blinked and saw a knowing look in her adoptive brother's eyes, "Parting will be tough, it'll be the first time any of us will be in different countries since we first arrived here, but I think it'll be good for us...A moment to grow."
"But Neville-" Hermione tried to protest.
"I'm with Neville and Luna, 'Mione," Ginny nodded her head with a slight grin, "We all agree that staying in Astoria isn't something any of us want to do right now, but...we all want to go somewhere different," The ginger-haired woman looked at Iris for a small moment before turning her attention back on Hermione, "So we should part ways for the moment and see where our paths lead, it'll let us cover more ground that way. If we're ever going to find our way home, we have to cover a lot of ground, right?"
"You...aren't wrong," Hermione deflated as she released a low sigh, "But..."
"'Mione," Iris stood and walked over to her friend with a soft look, "I know that with everything that has gone on, you're wary of what could happen...hell, I am too," She set a hand on Hermione's shoulder, "But I...I need to see what's in Kou. I have to,"
"Ris...?" Hermione looked at Iris in surprise.
Expression soft, Iris pressed a hand to her heart, "I promise that no matter what, I'll be okay...And if I've got leave, I'll come find you. Or Ron. Or Gin. Or Nev. Or Luna, I'll find one of you."
Hermione's gaze softened as she looked into Iris's determined eyes. After a moment, she nodded with a deep sigh, "I know you, Iris. You've always followed your heart even when things weren't clear. Just promise to stay safe and keep in touch. We'll figure out our paths, and who knows, they might lead us back to each other."
Despite staying silent for a long moment, Ron chimed in with a strained grin, "Yeah, just don't go picking fights with any more lords even if they piss you off, alright?"
Letting out a chuckle, Iris shot him a playful glare, "I'll try my best, Ron."
Wrapping an arm around her neck, Ginny pressed a wet kiss to Iris's cheek earning a mock scowl, "Take care of yourself, Iris. And if those Kou princes cause any trouble, hex them for us."
Ever enigmatic, Luna spoke as Iris was wiping away Ginny's spit, "The threads may stretch and tangle, but they have a way of finding each other again. Farewell, for now, Iris."
Looking Luna's way and seeing the blonde's eyes, Iris knew that this was likely the last time she'd be seeing Luna until the blonde decided to pop up which made her want to sigh. Standing from his seat, Neville offered her a reassuring smile, "We'll all find our way, one step at a time. Stay safe, Iris."
There was a mixture of emotions as Iris and her friends began making their preparations, they all had seemingly accepted that they'd been parting ways for the moment. Only time would truly tell if they would accept it, she felt a small bolt of unease sweep through her not long into the discussions at the realization that there would be no relying on her friends should trouble find its way to her. Despite that realization, she felt...happy knowing that they would finally have a chance to explore this world and see just where their feet could take them.
"Mei!" Kouha shouted as he rushed towards where Koumei was walking.
Turning his head towards the boy, Koumei's lips pulled into a slight smile as he saw the wide grin on Kouha's face, "Ha," The boy slid slightly across the recently polished floor though managed to stop himself just before slamming into him, "You seem to be in a rather cheerful mood. Happy that we're finally headed home?"
Snorting loudly, Kouha shook his head wildly, "Not about that though don't get me wrong, I can't wait to get back home if only to brag about everything. No, did you hear? Iris is coming back with us."
Koumei's eyebrows lifted in mild surprise wondering if her friends were coming along as well as Iris had mentioned needing to speak with them. His mind began to race, the knowledge that Iris would be returning with them added a layer of complexity to the already intricate tapestry of his feelings. He kept his tone neutral, "Iris?"
Nodding enthusiastically as his eyes shone brightly, Kouha fell in step beside Koumei, "Yup! She decided to join us. I guess she's curious about the Kou Empire, and well, she's got a lot of friends among us now," The boy's grin was wide, clearly overjoyed by the prospect of Iris's company, "I can't wait to show her all the best spots to drink and shit."
Releasing a low chuckle, Koumei realized that Kouha was only speaking of Iris rather than her friends, "Her friends...they're not coming?"
"Iris said they were parting ways apparently," Kouha blinked a bit and frowned, "Mei, is something wrong? You look a bit...off,"
Koumei's mind raced as he processed the news of Iris joining them but her friends parting ways. There was a sense of unease that swept through him, he couldn't push away the thought of Iris possibly leaving behind her friends for the wrong reasons. Pausing in his steps, he spoke softly, "No, nothing's wrong, Ha. As Iris is joining us, I do need to talk with her. If you'll excuse me."
"Uh, sure...I'm going to go find En," Kouha eyed him for a moment, "Last I checked, Iris was heading for the room Ashe gave her,"
Giving his brother a thankful nod, Koumei turned on his heel and began making his way through the castle. As he approached the semi-lavish quarters, he heard laughter spilling out of Iris's half-open door. Head tilting as he reached it, the door opened and Ashe stepped into view, "...Have to-Oh, Prince Koumei!" A wide grin spread across her face, "Didn't think I'd be seeing you until later."
Offering Ashe a polite nod, Koumei's mind is still occupied with thoughts of Iris's decision, "Is Iris in there, Ashe? I need to speak with her."
Gesturing inside, Ashe nodded while moving to allow Koumei inside. Stepping inside, he barely glanced around to note the semi-lavish decorations that covered the walls. Iris was perched on a small couch with her cheeks flushed a deep red. As her eyes rose to his, he marveled as her blush darkened further and seemed to crawl down her neck. Clearing her throat, she spoke, "Koumei...what brings you here?"
"I've got duties to attend," Ashe called out and Iris waved her off, "Make sure you come to dinner tonight, Iris!"
"I will," Iris shook her head lightly as the door clicked shut, "So..."
Clearing his throat as he pushed the feelings rushing about back, Koumei made his way over to her, "I hope that I didn't interrupt anything important. I heard that you'd made your decision."
Humming lightly, Iris nodded as she gestured for him to sit down, "I did and no, Ashe was just heading back to work," She rolled her eyes, "If anything, you saved me from being her excuse when Old Man Quinn decided to come calling," She smiled softly, "I...I'm excited."
Sitting down beside her, Koumei smiled despite the emotions rolling through him, "I'm glad though, Iris," She looked at him curiously, "Kouha told me that you were parting ways from your friends...With a decision like that, I wanted to make sure everything was alright."
Expression softening, Iris released a heavy sigh and her smile disappeared, "It was a tough decision, but we all have different paths we want to explore. It's not a farewell, just a temporary parting," She closed her eyes, "The hardest part for all of us...well for me at least, is knowing that we'll all be at least a country away from one another if not more. If one of us needs help and the others aren't around, it...we won't be able to help each other. I...I can't help, but worry."
Despite the hesitation running through him, Koumei wrapped an arm around her shoulders. Eyes opening, Iris looked at her for a moment before she slowly leaned into his side as he said, "Worry is natural, especially for those that are family and I can tell those friends of yours are," Iris breathed out a bit sharply, "But respecting one another's decision...it can be difficult, especially in moments like this."
"It is, but...we'll get through it," Iris released another slow sigh, "After all, I do want to see Kou especially since Kouha promised to show me all the really interesting places," A mischievous smile curled across her lips, "And introduce me to this magi of yours,"
Snorting softly as he shook his head, Koumei smiled lightly, "I think you two will get along fairly well once Judar realizes what you're capable of."
"Oh, I fully plan to give him a run for his money," Iris's eyes were bright, "After all, Kouha did mention he's a prankster and well, I haven't had a chance to play around since..."
Grimacing at the way she waved a hand towards her neck, Koumei told her, "I understand, Iris. Judar can be a handful, but I'm sure he'd love the challenge," A soft chuckle left him and Iris grinned, "Though with that in mind, I...I do have a small request."
Eyebrow rising, Iris gifted him a curious look, "A request?"
"A warning would be more apt, but..." Koumei released a low sigh as his expression turned serious and Iris shifted to turn towards him, "When we reach Kou, you'll be a guest of not one, but three of its crown princes, Iris. As a result, you'll be thrust into our high society which comes with its own set of dangers, politics, and expectations. As you've no doubt noticed by now, Kouen, Kouha, and myself do not like our step-mother, the current Empress, Gyokuen Ren,"
Nodding slowly, Iris's eyebrows furrowed, "It's hard not to notice especially when Kouha made more than a few comparisons between the jackass and her."
Snorting softly at that, Koumei shook his head, "He isn't completely wrong though I'll need to remind him to keep such talk out of earshot once we get back," He mentally sighed as Kouha would likely throw a small temper tantrum over it, "Due to her position, Gyokuen has considerable influence, and the court can be a treacherous place. Being associated with us may expose you to certain risks."
"I had realized that even before agreeing to join up with you," Iris eyed him, "Koumei...are you not saying something?"
Choosing his words carefully, Koumei spoke as he admitted, "With your abilities and even your mere presence among us, you'll attract attention, Iris. Many among the court will seek you out either as a pawn or see you as a potential threat," Iris's expression darkened at that and he mentally winced, "It's not my intention to anger you only state the facts," She nodded to him, "With her agenda and those that follow her, Gyokuen is unpredictable. We can't be sure what she'll do which is why I wanted to warn you now rather than later. Though given our connection, I have a feeling she might be hostile and attempt to hide it behind a facade."
"So don't trust your creepy stepmother...got it," Iris's tone was bland as Koumei let out a low chuckle, "Anything else I need to know?"
"Once it's revealed that you're connected to us, the court will likely attempt to curry your favor," Koumei warned her, "No matter what happens, do not trust anyone unless Kouen, Kouha, or myself say they're worthy of trust. Of course, I do not doubt that with your skills, you'll be able to make those decisions for yourself. I only ask in the beginning you rely on us,"
Nodding slowly as her lips pursed, Iris's eyes were filled with a mixture of emotions that Koumei could pick out she was pleased that he'd acknowledged her skills, "Alright...I get what you're telling me. And honestly, I'm glad that you told me now rather than later."
Chest tightening a bit, Koumei asked her, "Are you still sure about coming with us?"
Letting out a soft laugh, Iris shot him a grin, "Of course, I want to see Kou after all," She paused and her expression turned soft, "And...I want to see where things go with us...Kouen, you, and I. I want to understand these feelings," Koumei's chest felt warm as the tightness eased, "Just...Can we talk about something that doesn't involve politics? Like travel plans?"
Chuckling warmly as he nodded, Koumei relaxed against the couch, "Of course."
As they began to discuss their travel plans in earnest for the first time, Iris relaxed against his side and Koumei felt a sense of relief rush through him.
In the courtyard of Astoria's castle, Iris took in the familiar surroundings, letting her gaze linger on the well-tended gardens and the towering spires that stood as silent witnesses to the castle's storied past. Even with the recent battle, the damage done hadn't been too bad thanks to the lack of soldiers which she'd later learned had been from Lord Habi sending a majority into the city and surrounding countryside not long before the battle began. Turning her head as Ashe approached, she saw the blackened crown that Lord Habi once worn settled on the younger woman's head. There was a sullen look in Ashe's eyes, it had become increasingly evident with each passing day.
Leadership was a heavy burden to bear for Ashe, it was one her friend was built for though. Speaking in a low tone, Ashe murmured, "Guess this is it, you're leaving today.."
"Yeah," Iris's throat felt tight, "Ashe-"
Grunting as Ashe pulled her into a tight hug, Iris returned it quickly as her eyes burned. Ashe's voice was thick with emotion, "I...Somehow a part of me was fooled into thinking you'd stick around once it was all said and done, I...I almost don't want to let you go, Iris."
"Ashe..." Iris tightened her grip on Ashe.
"But I know it's something you've got to do just like me taking up the crown even if I'm still having trouble believing that he's dead," Ashe's voice dropped into a low tone, "I...I don't know if I'm ready, Iris,"
"You are, Ashe," Iris pulled away to smile gently at Ashe, "You'll be the best damn Lady of the Goulon Empire they've seen in years. I've no doubt you'll lead them with far more wisdom and strength than they've had in a long time,"
Letting out a wet laugh, Ashe rubbed at her eyes, "Damn it, I promised myself that I wouldn't cry," She shook her head, "It still sucks that you're leaving, Iris. I kind of wish we could have gotten time to at least enjoy ourselves for a bit longer. We didn't even get a chance to prank the guards."
Snorting softly, Iris reminded her, "They're your men now, Ashe. Wouldn't that be a bit mean?" Ashe smiled weakly, "I'll come back eventually. I promise, Ashe. After all, you're one of my best friends and the first one we made in this world."
"I'll hold you to that," Ashe dropped her hand as a mischievous look crossed her face, "So...Kou, huh? Any reason you're heading there first?" Iris blinked a bit at the sudden change in conversation, "Like...two very handsome princes?"
Cheeks flushing at that, Iris rubbed the back of her neck, "I have no idea-" She saw Ashe's raised eyebrow and pointed look, "Kouen invited me, Ashe."
"Mhmm...yeah," Ashe grinned largely, "He invited you to ensure he's got time to have some fun once they're home,"
There was no mistaking what Ashe was referring to, the perverse look on the redhead's face said it all. Cheeks growing hot, Iris looked away from her, "I have no idea what you're talking about."
"Sure you don't," Ashe let out a warm laugh, "Oh, Prince Kouen, Iris and I were just finishing up our talk,"
Mentally cursing as her cheeks darkened further the moment she looked at Kouen, Iris promised to kick Ashe's ass the next time she got a chance. Raising an eyebrow at her, Kouen asked, "Everything alright?"
As Iris tried to compose herself, Ashe grinned mischievously and gave her a playful nudge. "Oh, everything's just fine. Iris was just telling me about the warm welcome she expects to receive in Kou."
Eyes widening as she choked on her spit, Iris felt an increased need to strangle the newly minted monarch as Kouen's eyebrow rose even higher. Amusement filled his eyes as they shifted to look at her, Kouen crossed his arms, "Is that so? I hope our hospitality lives up to your expectations, Iris."
Clearing her throat as she tried to regain her composure, Iris shot another glare toward Ashe, "I'm sure it will."
"Well, I can tell you've come to grab Iris," Ashe gently bumped her shoulder into Iris's, "I should go find Quinn and get into what I've been told is the proper position to see you all off. Iris," Iris offered Ashe a fake smile, "Prince Kouen,"
Walking away wearing a bright grin, Ashe waved to Iris before disappearing into the crowd that was forming in the courtyard. Pressing a hand to her face, she muttered, "I...Am going to kick her fucking ass the next time I see her."
"Somehow I feel as though I missed a rather interesting conversation," Kouen looked amused as she flushed darkly and looked away from him, "May I ask what it was about?"
"No, we're supposed to be getting ready right? Kouha is probably going to be looking for me soon," Iris started to walk away from Kouen.
Catching up to her with ease, Kouen spoke in a soft voice that carried, "You can't escape that easily, Iris. What's the harm in sharing a bit of the conversation with me?"
Sighing as she realized that Kouen wouldn't give up so easily, Iris replied, "Nothing...We just talked about me leaving and Ashe decided to be her mischievous self. Simple as that-"
Raising an eyebrow, Kouen stepped in front of her and crossed his arms, "And that made you blush? Especially when I came in sight?"
Mentally swearing, Iris's cheeks darkened and she looked away from him as she muttered, "She was teasing me...about you and Koumei..."
"Koumei and I?" Kouen chuckled softly, "Ah, I see what's going on. She's implying that you're only coming to Kou because of us,"
Rolling her eyes, Iris sent him a minor glare, "I am going both because you invited me and because Kouha promised to show me around," She hesitated for a moment before admitting, "Koumei and you are only a...secondary reason."
Smirking at her, Kouen stepped out of the way and they resumed walking over to where everyone who was still within Astoria's walls was gathered. She jolted when he spoke softly, "I'm glad to hear that. Although, I wouldn't be opposed to showing you the unique hospitality of Kou."
Cheeks darkening, Iris wondered if there would ever be a time when she wouldn't blush in Kouen or Koumei's presence. She shot Kouen a small glare, "Smooth...real smooth."
Chuckling softly as his smirk widened, Kouen looked at her in amusement, "I'm only being honest, Iris," Iris's eyes widened which only increased Kouen's amusement, "But talking of such things can wait, we have a long journey ahead of us and I'm sure Kouha will throw a fit if we linger."
Stomach tightening with uncertainty and anticipation, Iris nodded slowly and increased her pace.
The mountainous landscape of Astoria's eastern lands provided a scenic and challenging backdrop for Iris and the Kou army during their two-week journey to Kou. The winding paths and rocky terrains demanded careful navigation, but the breathtaking views were a reward in themselves. During this time, Iris decided to fulfill Kouha's persistent request to experience flying on her back. Despite her wish to fly as high and as long as possible, she kept the flights relatively tame yet exhilarating. However, this newfound activity also raised some unspoken tension between the princes.
During one of the nights they stopped, Iris walked through the nearly silent camp towards Kouen's tent which was still lit up with activity. Making her way inside after being granted entrance, she offered Kouen and Koumei a slight smile as they looked up from their maps and discussions. The interior of the tent was illuminated by the soft glow of strategically placed lanterns, casting a warm and inviting atmosphere. Kouen greeted her with a small nod, "Evening, Iris. Not heading to bed yet?"
"Not yet, I-" Iris's head tilted as she noted the maps spread out between them, "Planning out the next leg?"
Gesturing for her to join them, Koumei nodded as a warm smile spread across his lips, "Yes, we're considering the most optimal route through the remaining mountains. Kouha is insistent that we take a more scenic path, but I'm more concerned about efficiency."
Letting out a soft snort, Iris shook her head, "Why am I not surprised about that?" She looked over the maps carefully, "Some of these...you look to be creating a mixture of routes to choose from."
Nodding to her, Kouen crossed his arms, "Efficiency is crucial, especially in unfamiliar terrain. We need to balance enjoying the journey with reaching Kou promptly."
Humming low in her throat, Iris leaned forward as she scanned the maps, "I think...no, I can help with that. The terrain here can be tricky, but certain routes can offer a good compromise between efficiency and scenery."
"You've traveled this close to Kou before?" Koumei asked her curiously.
"Not recently," Iris shook her head lightly, "But I've flown over similar terrain recently, the southernmost areas of the Goulon empire do boast mountains even if they're not like this. Flying gives you a unique perspective on the landscape, and you learn to appreciate the intricacies of the land from above,"
There was a low sound from Kouen, Iris glanced at him before looking at Koumei as he said, "Well, I suppose we'll have to take you up on that offer. Though that would mean having someone other than Kouha on your back."
"I don't mind," Iris smiled lightly though it dropped as she remembered why she'd sought the two out, "If you don't mind me asking...is something wrong? You two seem rather..." She struggled to find the right word, "Tense lately,"
Exchanging glances, Koumei released a low sigh, "Iris...We are thankful that you have been keeping Kouha occupied. It's created a rather drastic difference between our trip from Kou and this one. But..." He paused and ran a hand through his hair, "We...how do I put this without it sounding bad?"
Eyebrow rising at that, Iris frowned at him, "Koumei?"
"Even if you don't intend it, it feels as though you're spending almost every waking hour with Kouha," Kouen's lips were pulled into a deep frown and his arms were crossed, "It...we wish to spend more time with you,"
Blinking slowly, Iris absorbed their words. She cleared her throat feeling both surprised and touched, "I didn't realize it was bothering you to that extent," She rubbed the back of her neck and sank into a nearby seat with a low sigh, "If I had, I would've been a bit more considerate..." She frowned softly as guilt welled up, "I thought I was just helping out since you both mentioned that Kouha really couldn't settle down during long journeys and this would be an option to fly as well," She dropped her hand with a sigh, "But...it only made things worse..."
"No," Kouen shook his head, "You did help us, Iris," He approached her and set a hand on her shoulder, "We do appreciate what you did,"
"And seeing how much you enjoyed flying made it easier to deal with," Koumei added as he walked over as well, "Kouha's energy can be infectious, and your presence has undoubtedly lightened the mood," He released a soft sigh," However, balance is key, and we find ourselves missing the more..." He paused for a moment, "Focused discussions we used to have,"
Heartwarming at that, Iris nodded slowly, "I've...I admit that I've missed them as well."
Sharing another glance with his brother, Kouen spoke as his hand squeezed her shoulder, "We aren't trying to blame you, Iris. If anything, we could have spoken up earlier, but didn't."
Smiling at him, Iris reached up to touch his hand, "Well...I guess this is what could be called a learning curve of sorts when it comes to...whatever is between us," She snickered at the surprised looks Koumei and Kouen had on their faces, "How about from now on, we all promise to talk to one another when something first starts to bother us rather than let it linger?"
"I...think that should work though it should wait until we're in private," Koumei agreed after a moment.
"I suppose that is a good idea," Kouen released her shoulder.
"I will speak with Kouha tomorrow about taking a break from the flights and giving someone else a shot though one of you will need to help me with that," Iris gave them a pointed look, "I do not want to deal with his bitching alone,"
Chuckling softly, Koumei nodded, "I don't have a problem being the target. I do have to speak with him anyway as he's still trying to convince us that you should arrive in Rakshou as a dragon."
Snorting at that, Iris shook her head, "Not happening even if the idea of scaring the ever-loving shit out of people is amusing, I don't think that would go over well."
"No, it would not," Kouen looked like the idea was tempting though.
While she was highly tempted to ask just why the idea was tempting, Iris held back, "So shall we get back to figuring out logistics?"
Despite his many protests, Kouha eventually settled down after managing to get Kouen to agree to some sparring sessions. Taking Kouen and Koumei up into the air was different, Iris discovered that Kouen enjoyed taking part in more dangerous aerial exploits once they got out of eyesight while Koumei preferred things that were a bit slower. When they managed to reach the border, the group took a two-day break to fully stretch out their legs and take stock of their supplies. Within the small border town, the army worked on gathering together supplies and Kouha started to drag Iris around much to the amused exasperation of his brothers.
Glancing at his side as he felt someone brush against him, Kouen inwardly snorted at seeing Iris shooting Kouha a small look of irritation. A small look in his younger brother's direction showed that Kouha had been thoroughly distracted by one of his attendants for the moment. Amused that Kouha had managed to reach the end of Iris's patience, he wrapped an arm around her shoulders and began moving towards one of the side streets. Lips pulling into a slight smirk as Iris let out a soft squeak, he tugged her gently while explaining, "If you want to avoid being drawn back in by him, I would suggest walking with me for a little bit."
"Right," Iris nodded slowly and fell properly in step beside him.
Despite turning a corner, Kouen didn't remove his arm and felt content to leave it wrapped around her shoulders. He was somewhat surprised that Iris didn't try to remove his arm either though wouldn't comment on it. Instead, he asked her, "Finally getting tired of being dragged around?"
"That obvious?" Iris glanced at him from the corner of her eye.
"Slightly though I was expecting it to happen a little bit sooner," Kouen admitted with an amused smile, "You have far more patience than most,"
Snorting softly, Iris shook her head, "I'd have more if he didn't insist on looking at clothes and makeup. Who cares about that kind of shit?"
"Most women do," Kouen saw Iris roll her eyes and chuckled softly, "Many of our court do,"
Muttering softly under her breath, Iris's face took on a mutinous look that was rather adorable. She grimaced darkly, "I am not going to have fun, am I?"
Kouen couldn't help but chuckle at Iris's expression and muttered protest. The difference between Iris and every other woman he'd met was refreshing in a way he'd never expected. It only made the warmth in his chest deepen. Reassuring her, he smiled as she glanced at him, "No worries, Iris. I doubt anyone expects you to suddenly develop an interest in fashion and cosmetics."
"Save for Kouha," Iris stuck her tongue out.
Smile deepening, Kouen shook his head, "You can always find a quiet spot to escape the madness when Kouha gets too enthusiastic about his shopping endeavors."
Shooting him a relieved look, Iris released a deep sigh and looked ahead of them. As they strolled through the side streets, the noise of the bustling border town gradually faded behind them. The air was filled with the anticipation of the journey ahead. Iris spoke in a soft tone, "Kouen...What exactly will it be like? When we get there?"
"A party will be thrown though not to the same extent as it would have been had we conquered Astoria," Kouen thought carefully about what awaited them, "Koumei and I will be reporting to our father not long after we return. We will likely only have an hour to settle ourselves before he calls on us. Kouha will not have to see him despite being part of this due to his lesser role. You will not need to go before him either until the party," He felt Iris stiffen and glanced down at her, "As our guest, you will need to be introduced to him,"
"Ah, right," Iris looked a bit reluctant and Kouen couldn't blame her for it.
"Koumei or I will be with you the entire time," Kouen assured her as they came to a stop underneath a small grouping of trees, "Which reminds me, you have a small choice to make,"
"Choice?" Iris eyed him curiously.
"Unlike our sisters save for Hakuei, Koumei, Kouha, Hakuryuu, and I have our own palaces within the capital," Kouen explained earning a wide-eyed look, "While we all have our own rooms within the main palace, our main residences are outside of it. While I've no doubt Kouha will likely offer you a room at his-"
Nose wrinkling, Iris shook her head, "Yeah, no, I think I'll pass on that one," She hesitated, "But...I...Koumei and you are offering me a room at your places?"
"Yes," Kouen heard her breath hitch, "You don't have to decide now, but we do need to know,"
"I...this is..." Iris's cheeks burned and she pressed a hand to her face.
Kouen couldn't help but find Iris's flustered reaction endearing. Her genuine response was a stark contrast to the calculated politeness he often encountered in the political circles of the Kou Empire. He appreciated the authenticity she brought to their interactions. Reaching out, he gently tugged the hand she had pressed against her face, "Iris," She looked at him with a mixture of emotions burning in those emerald green eyes, "It's a simple offer. We aren't pressuring you to choose. Take your time to decide. Whether it's my palace or Koumei's, you're more than welcome."
Nodding mutely, Iris's face slowly began to regain its normal color. She took a few deep breaths before finally murmuring, "Thank you for warning me now...I'll think about it."
"Good," Kouen gestured to a nearby side street, "Would you like to continue our walk? I'm fairly sure there is a bookshop that way and Koumei's no doubt in there,"
Lips pulling into a light smile as amusement lit up her eyes, Iris nodded, "I would."
Arms still draped across her shoulders, Kouen began to walk with Iris beside him. As they walked, Iris surprised him by leaning into his side. Eyes widening slightly, he glanced down at her only to see that she was looking straight ahead. Despite the temptation to ask her about it, he kept his mouth shut and merely tightened his arm a little bit more.
As they moved towards the capital in earnest once they'd passed the border, the change was quite clear as landscapes shifted and changed rapidly with each passing mile. Within another two weeks, the group finally arrived at the bustling heart of the Kou Empire. The capital was a sprawling metropolis, filled with people from all walks of life. There were audible sighs of relief from across the army as they began making their way through the gates, it was clear that everyone was relieved to finally be home. As they entered the city gates, Iris couldn't help but marvel at the sheer scale of it all.
People crowded the streets though soldiers in polished armour kept them at bay as Kouen led the army through the capital, Iris's eyes flicked about as she took in the crowded streets. The city buzzed with activity, a lively and dynamic spectacle that overwhelmed the senses. The streets were lined with market stalls offering a myriad of goods, from exotic spices to finely crafted wares. The air was filled with the mingling scents of street food, perfumes, and the occasional whiff of exotic spices. The architecture became more grand and ornate as they ventured deeper into the city, marking the transition from the common districts to the more affluent areas. After a while, they approached the residences of Kouen and Koumei. Kouen's palace stood as a testament to the empire's opulence, adorned with intricate designs and towering spires. Beside it, Koumei's residence exuded a different kind of elegance, more subdued but no less impressive.
After dismissing the army who quickly bowed to their royals before beginning to disperse, Kouen turned to Iris with a small smile. "Welcome to the heart of the Kou Empire."
Pausing in the middle of her dismount, Iris glanced back at Kouen. Smile forming, Iris nodded with a laugh, "It's... impressive."
There was a loud snort from Kouha, the boy shooting her a grin as he jumped down from his horse. Iris finished dismounting and an attendant rushed up to take her horse. Shooting Kouha a look of displeasure, Kouen cleared his throat, "Just wait until you see more of it, Iris. Now about your decision..."
Swallowing a bit, Iris rubbed the back of her neck, "Ah, right," She glanced between Kouen and Koumei, "I...uh," A small flush decorated her cheeks, "I-"
"Oh, c'mon, Iris," Kouha wrapped his arms around her waist with a grin, "You're staying with me, right?"
"No-" Iris winced at the loud whine he let out.
"Why not?" Kouha pouted at her.
"Because she has common sense?" Kouen snorted at his younger brother who scowled at him.
Releasing her, Kouha began stomping towards Kouen, "It's not like Iris is going to stay with you-"
"I am-" Iris ignored the loud shout from Kouha, "Staying with Koumei," The look of shock on Kouha's face was amusing, "My paintings are already there, and well...He did say I would be free to set up a studio-"
"But you can do that at my palace," Kouha pouted at her.
"A studio requires a certain amount of quiet," Koumei admonished his younger brother who scowled at him, "And you are more likely to bother her every five seconds you're not busy with your duties,"
"I would not-" Kouha growled at his elder brother.
Chuckling with a look of amusement, Kouen cut in, "You would and no matter how much you try to deny it, we all know you'd use Iris as an excuse to ditch your lessons."
"I-hate you all," Kouha glared at his elder brothers.
Giggling softly as warmth filled her chest, Iris walked over to stand beside Kouen as Koumei ruffled his younger brother's hair and began to tease him. She spoke in a soft voice, "You're not...disappointed, are you?"
Kouen glanced at her with a warm smile, "Not at all, Iris. Your choice is yours to make, and I'm glad you're comfortable with it," He shook his head slightly, "As much as I might not want to admit it, Koumei's palace is more suited to your needs, especially with the studio. Though do not hesitate to come over to mine whenever you wish, you'll always have an open invitation."
Relief swept through her, Iris smiled warmly at Kouen, "I'll have to take you up on that offer...all things considered," Kouen's smile widened, "Ah," She spotted Koumei turning towards them, "Looks like they're done."
"Indeed," Kouen chuckled as Kouha threw himself at Iris's waist once more earning a soft grunt.
"Promise you'll come visit me...and I can do the same?" Kouha pleaded with her.
"Of course," Iris patted his head lightly, "Though only if it doesn't interfere with your duties,"
Groaning at her, Kouha stuck out his tongue, "You're just as bad as them, Iris!"
"Have to be otherwise I could get into trouble," Iris offered Kouha a mischievous grin.
"Speaking of duties, Iris," Koumei drew her attention to him, "We should head to my palace sooner rather than later if you want a small tour before I'm called away,"
Nodding lightly, Iris managed to pull herself free from Kouha, "Of course."
Falling in step beside Koumei, Iris offered Kouen and Kouha a small wave as they headed to a small carriage that was waiting for them. As Iris and Koumei made their way to Koumei's palace, the noble district seemed to unfold and she made note of a few small rather intricate-looking buildings that seemed somewhat out of place. The palace, though more subdued in its elegance compared to Kouen's opulent structure, held a unique charm. As they entered, Koumei guided Iris through the halls, sharing anecdotes about the architecture, the history, and the daily life within the palace.
The palace held an air of tranquility that immediately appealed to Iris. Koumei's presence added to the calm atmosphere, and she found herself appreciating the thoughtful consideration he put into every detail of her stay. After a leisurely tour that ended in a spacious room, Koumei's voice was warm as he watched her look around, "You can decorate however you wish as this will be your room," She shot him a startled look, "I'm aware from our previous conversations that you prefer smaller spaces, but...I figure that with Kouha around, you'll likely find things to fill this room."
"I..." Iris looked about the room as a small amount of amusement slunk in, "You aren't wrong though it still feels like a lot," She walked over to one of the many windows and pushed it open, "But...the windows..."
"I figured you would like a room that had a lot of them," Koumei stepped up behind her and she jolted as one of his hands settled on the small of her back, "Downstairs, I'm having my staff set up a studio for you. It will have plenty of windows as well and sitting room. While I have a basic understanding due to some of my sisters' interest in art, I don't exactly know all of what you might need, so if you could provide a list-"
"I will," Iris turned her head to look at Koumei's face only to blink at the fact he seemed to be studying her intently, "Koumei?"
"Do you like it?" Koumei asked with uncertainty filling each word.
Lips pulling into a light smile, Iris nodded and pressed a kiss to his cheek. Koumei's cheeks tinted with a faint blush at the unexpected gesture. Iris chuckled softly, appreciating the genuine and unguarded reaction from the usually composed man. She told him in a soft tone, "I do...Thank you."
Relief flickered through Koumei's eyes, he smiled, "I'm glad you like it."
