Chapter 5

Hermione Granger-Malfoy was the first to wake up at her home. After looking at her husband, still asleep, she went to the kitchen and made breakfast.

About 20 minutes later, Draco Malfoy was at the table eating and talking to his wife. If someone told him that he would start dating Hemione in Hogwarts’ 5th year, that person would get a one-way ticket to St. Mungus. But now, he couldn’t be any happier, married to the most amazing witch in the world, in his opinion, and planning to start a family.

If someone told Hermione she would marry Draco Malfoy, she would laugh and ask what drug the person was into. But today, she knew the true happiness because of him. They were going to visit St. Mungus, trying to find out why she couldn’t get pregnant.

Suddenly they saw two owls entering their kitchen, quickly recognizing Fred’s and Harry’s owl. After feeding and sending the animals back to their owners, the blonde man read the letters.

Dear Malfoys,

You’re invited to the Christmas at the most-fun-and-amazing-Weasley-that-ever-existed, me of course. As usual, everybody is coming, and Fred is bringing one of his friends from Hogwarts. You’ll find out that the girl has a hilarious name, you’ll see it.
Angelina is sending kisses, she says that she misses you Hermione, and wants to have tea with you, Ginny, Pansy, and Luna again.
Also, Ron is bringing a new girlfriend, he swears that this one is the right one, but we know that will end in some months.

Most-fun-and-amazing-Weasley-that-ever-existed,
George Weasley.

As always, George’s letter always amused the couple. It was a tradition to spend Christmas at George’s house, and New Year’s Eve at the not-so-humble-Harry’s-mansion. It was nice to see everybody united and having a new face this year would be nice. They started reading Harry’s after talking about George’s.

Dear Mione and company,

I believe you have already received George’s invitation, so I am communicating that James doesn’t stop talking about Christmas with Uncle Draco and how he always chooses the best gifts. I want you to ask your husband to stop stealing my son.
Also, Theo is at my side asking if Draco wants more ink to paint his hair (I can imagine his face turning red).
We are thinking about adopting another kid, maybe a girl this time. You know Theo, he loves kids, and I want a family. What do you think?
We want to wish you good luck today. You know everything will be alright and soon you and the fake blonde will have a beautiful family.

Your best friend,
Harry.

Hermione couldn’t help to smile at her best friend’s — kind of brother — letter. Harry and Theo were a perfect couple and everybody knew that he finally found the love and happiness he always deserved.

“They don’t respect me at all, do they?” Her husband said while drinking his coffee.

“They love you, on their way.” Said the smiling woman “Have to take a bath, can you organize everything?” she kissed her husband and listened to an answer when was leaving the room.

“Of course Granger” He never abandoned her school time nickname.

At the bathroom, Hermione entered the bathtub, with the hot water embracing her body. Smelling the apple perfume in the bathroom, she laid her head and tried to relax herself. The woman wanted a family, kids to take care of and travel and teach magic. They both wanted this. Since Draco hadn’t longer his parents, her’s were in Australia and rarely came to England. The friends were some kind of family, but they all had their kids, and she was so jealous of it.

Once again, the beautiful blonde baby with Draco’s eyes emerged in her mind. The baby she left at a portkey that took her to someplace that nobody knew. The war ruined a lot of things in her life, but she wasn’t going to let her family be one of those things.

Getting out of the bath, she put on a baby blue dress and dried her hair. Stopping in front of the mirror, she looked at herself. A happy married woman, the favorite for the future minister, and, hopefully, a future mother. Suddenly she felt like she was betraying the baby she abandoned, how was she? Because while Hermione was here planning future kids, her daughter could be anywhere in the world.

When she left the bathroom, Draco looked at her, he already was wearing his suit. He analyzed his wife.

“You look gorgeous honey” he kissed her forehead “You are thinking about her again, aren’t you?” He said holding her face carefully.
She faked a smile.

“You know it’s not our fault, right? We needed to protect her?” Draco said hugging her.

They couldn’t help but cry, talking about their first daughter wasn’t easy. Nobody would admit out loud that their regret was unimaginable, or that the first thing made at their kind of mansion was a girl’s room. The room for the kid they left behind just with a name: Lyra.

Neither Draco nor Hermione would admit that sometimes, they entered that room. Sitting on the floor and thinking about how there would be their life with her. But now was too late.

Finishing their moment of regret, both went to their living room, to travel by flu to the doctor’s office.

Getting there, Hermione cleaned her face and found a sit. Some seconds later, Draco was sitting by her side, holding her hand like someone who says: everything will be fine.

For some minutes, the woman felt exactly like the night she went to that goddam portkey. Once again, everything was so silent that you could hear a pin drop. Even her head was silent. It all just looked empty, so empty that she felt completely alone and desperate. Not wanting to have a crisis in the waiting room, she squeezed his hand, remembering she was not alone.

Soon her mind was brought back to reality when she heard the wizard calling her name. Entering his clinic, she politely greeted him and lay on the stretcher.

The doctor made some of the generic answers that they all do, some of the magical questions, and then started examining her. Unlike the muggle doctors, all he needed was his wand and about 30 minutes later, the couple was sitting in front of the doctor’s table. The tension was so much that the loudest thing in the room was the clock.

“ Mrs. Granger-Malfoy” he loudly sighed “Unfortunately, I don’t have good news”

She strongly squeezed her husband’s hand, painfully closing her eyes.

“Please say it” Draco said when realized his wife couldn’t speak.

“You can’t have kids” Hermione felt her heart fall “ The number of cruciatos you have been subjected left permanent scars in your uterus, and that turn impossible for you to have kids.”

“Thanks for your time, doctor” Her husband said, helping her to leave the office.

When they arrived at home, Hermione finally fell, she just couldn’t stop crying. Draco never left her side, hugging her, and never letting her lose herself. She took three hours to calm down. The hole in her chest would never close, she had the chance to have a family, but now this chance escaped through her fingers. Once again the war was ruining something for her.
