the beginning of a life

James met Sirius when they were eleven. It was at a grocery store of all places, in the fruit aisle. James had trouble deciding whether to buy strawberries or blueberries. Blueberries were his mom’s favorite. Strawberries were his. He didn't really like blueberries, but his mom was having a bad couple of days at work. So, he chose the blueberries. Sirius was looking at the pineapples.
“Do pineapples have a tell? Like to know if they’re good or not?” Sirius mumbled, not to anyone in particular.
“Like watermelon you mean?” James found himself asking.
Sirius brightened.
“Yeah! Like with watermelon you tell by the color on the bottom, does pineapple have that?” James thought about it. He reached out and tapped on the pineapple, feeling the strength.
“Maybe if it's hard? Since they’re really all the same color.”
Sirius began feeling all the pineapples.
“I bet if it’s hard then it's ripe, no one likes squishy fruits. If it's soft that probably means, it's bad.” James nodded.
“That makes sense to me.” They both began feeling all the different pineapples.
“Feel this one!” Sirius held out the pineapple to him. James felt it, his eyes widened.
“Its like a brick! That must be the best one in stock!” He said excitedly.
Sirius grinned.
“Brilliant mate! Say, what's your name?”
James stuck out his hand.
“James Potter at your service.” Sirius shook it.
“Sirius Black.”

They discovered Sirius would be attending the school James went to. Both boys being 11, they would probably be in the same grade. Sirius had just moved here. They pinky swore to find each other on their first day. James went back to his mom, taking the blueberries.

The summer finished fairly quickly. Soon enough it was time for school, James was excited remembering Sirius. He had loads to tell him. He wanted to be GREAT friends with Sirius, he seemed so cool. He couldn’t wait to tell him all about the new watercolor paint set he got as a back-to-school gift. It had every color. The first thing James painted was a pineapple. When he arrived at school, James looked everywhere for Sirius. He could not find him. Sirius was not on the playground, or in the hallway, he did not see him when peeking into his classroom. James almost gave up. He sat on the steps waiting for the bell to ring. He might as well just go to class without Sirius.
Then he saw two boys with black hair. One had longer black hair, the others was shorter, and much curlier. The boy with long hair turned and James caught a glimpse of his face. Was it Sirius? The boy seemed to be looking around, he turned fully and locked eyes with James. It was Sirius. James jumped up. Sirius ran over to him, dragging the other boy by the sleeve.
“JAMES!”

“SIRIUS!!” Sirius hugged him. James was overjoyed.
“It's so great to see you mate! I was worried you wouldn’t show. This is my little brother Regulus. He’s a year below us.”
James wrinkled his nose.
“Oh boy am I sorry for you. That means you’ve got Mr Slughorn for science. He just sits there like a blubbering idiot and makes one of his students explain everything to everyone else!” James exclaimed. Sirius laughed excitedly. Regulus looked put out.
“A shame, I was hoping for a competent teacher.” James grinned.
“It's only a year. Mrs. McGonagall and Mrs Sprout are the teachers for our year, and I heard they’re very good. Soon you’ll have them and forget all about Slughorn.”
“I suppose that is something to look forward to.” Regulus nodded. James noticed that he was quite well spoken for a 10-year-old. Not that he was much older, but he definitely didn’t know as many big words as Regulus seemed too. James supposed he would learn them, that's what school was for.
“Do you know any blokes in Reg’s year?” Sirius asked.
James thought for a few minutes.
“I think there's a girl my parents introduced me to last year at a dinner. Her name is Pandora, I think? She seemed very nice even though I only met her once. You should speak with her Regulus. You don’t have to worry though. Our levels eat lunch and have our break together. So, you can find out who all are at that level then. My mum said we eat lunch at 11:30.” James told Sirius. Sirius nodded.
“Will you sit with James and I at lunch Reggie?” Regulus nodded quickly.
“Of course, I will.” James grinned.

By the time lunch rolled around, Sirius and James were having the best time. They sat at a table and James laid his jacket in a seat, for Regulus. They’d made two more friends, a bloke named Peter and one named Remus. Sirius stuck to James’ side but seemed truly enamored by Remus. Finally, Regulus’ level came to lunch. James instantly saw Regulus; he was standing by the blonde-haired girl that he knew to be Pandora. James smiled, pleased that Regulus had taken his advice and talked to her. He saw Regulus scanning the lunchroom. Probably looking for Sirius. James nudged Sirius. He turned just as Regulus saw them. Sirius waved at him. Regulus looked relieved. Regulus and Pandora made their way over to them.
Sirius did not talk to Regulus much after asking him the most basic questions about his day. Something Regulus looked quite put out by. Instead, Sirius spoke to Remus.
“Have you had Sluggy yet?” James leaned over and whispered to Regulus. Regulus looked surprised that James was talking to him.
He shook his head.
“We have him after lunch.” James wrinkled his nose.
“Word of advice then, he always eats a tuna fish sandwich. So, stay out of the smelling distance.” Regulus’ eyes brightened. He looked amused.
James wished he laughed. He wanted to make him laugh.
