If you asked Evan what happiness means to him, he'd probably tell you about his books and his group of friends, but he might omit something significant.
Because he recently came to the conclusion that his happiness has a name, messy hair and a shitty personality: for him happiness is Barty.
Barty is the kind of guy everyone tells you to avoid because being around him always brings troubles, but if you don't listen to them and actually get to know him, you'll learn about his true personality, the one he tends to hide behind his intimidating facade and irritating grin
If you asked Barty what happiness means to him, he'd tell you all about his Quidditch carrier, his friends and Evan, without even knowing why he didn't consider Evan the same as any other friend.
Evan is like the sun for him, warm and bright, always present even on cloudy days, like a reassuring presence that keeps you going through the day; but that's how everyone feels about their best friends, right?
Evan is the kind of guy who likes to act tough and no one would ever dare to compare his cold soul to the sun, but if you really look at him, you'll understand every minimal thing that is hidden behind his gloomy eyes
The first year of Hogwarts was, for both of them, an escape from their everyday reality and even if things between them were off with an horrible start, now they are glad that they have each other.
As you walk around Hogwarts, you may notice that whenever someone talks about Barty, they always mention Evan and vice versa , because for them one cannot exists without the other.
Evan likes to think that he noticed it before Barty: whenever he was talking with someone, at any point of the conversation, he'd get asked about Barty, about how he was doing or if they were fighting since they were not together in the hallways like always.
The way Regulus had to spell for him the fact that everyone but him , and probably Barty, had noticed their codependency, was almost embarrassing.
He honestly did not think they were that bad but, after his conversation with Regulus, he started to notice little details that he never thought of before, confusing himself even more.
On the other hand, Barty always knew about it but he tended to ignore the whispers that followed him and Evan in the hallways, deciding to intervene only if the thing seemed to disturb Evan, even if he also knew that whatever they were doing was not something everybody did , because at the end he did not mind at all: this was their thing and, he hopes, it will always be.
They talked about it eventually, almost shocking their friends who believed that the elephant in the room was going to be there forever, and decided to keep going like always to see where that was going to take them.
It's useless to say that, not even two weeks later, they were already walking in the hallways ,holding hands, while listening to Regulus rant about some potion's assignment, that they'd probably need to copy from him later on , but for now it didn't really matter, did it?
