CUDDLE PILE
The first time James asked Lily out on a date was half way through the first year - it was also the first time Lily rejected him.
Frank stared pityingly from the sofa, Remus tried to make it seem like he was invested in the book he held in his hands, Sirius didn't even try to hide the fact that he was dying inside over the way James dramatically approached her with a small collection on lily flowers chocolate.
Peter was the poor soul roped into standing by James' side for... moral support, he supposed?
The rest of Gryffindor House were caught between watching intently or completely ignoring the cringe worthy attempt to win Lily's heart.
It was an hour later that the first ever "Cuddle Pile" was initiated.
James, hurt from the admittedly gentle rejection, hadn't even made it to his own bed - instead collapsing onto Remus' and mutely staring off into the distance.
Peter glanced between Remus and Sirius, the three of them unsure on what to do.
Remus hesitated before sitting on the edge of his bed, awkwardly patting James on the shoulder.
"I'm really sorry, mate... On the bright side, she said she thought you were cool" Remus gave a weak smile, looking at Peter and Sirius for approval.
Sirius shrugged, obviously having no clue how to handle the situation, Peter just gave a thumbs up.
"she only said that to be nice" came James' muffled reply, his head buried in the pillows on the bed. "she's always so nice."
Peter hesitated, before shuffling closer, "But she's also really blunt - she doesn't lie to make people feel better, James- remember- you said you liked how blunt she was last week, when she said Sirius looked dumb with that stick crown you made?"
James whined slightly, making a noncomittal noise as he curled into himself.
Remus continued to gently rub his back as comfortingly as possible.
Sirius swallowed painfully, before walking over and taking a seat beside Remus, Peter going around to the other side of the bed to sit beside James.
"There are plenty of other fish in the sea, James!" Sirius tried to cheer, "And a bunch of them would be beyond lucky to be with you!"
"but I don' wan' other girls... I want Lily..."
"Maybe Evans just... doesn't want to date right now!" Peter chirped, "She's only known us a year - and she's super into her studies so maybe she just doesn't want to, I dunno, get distracted?"
James hummed, obviously not really paying attention to what any oft hem were saying anymore.
"You... are kinda in my bed, James" Remus mentioned after a couple moments of silence, but James didn't respond.
Remus sighed, "Right..."
Sirius stared at them, before grinning - "Budge up, James, make room for Remmy"
"What-"
"Shush Remus- you get your bed, James isn't left alone so he gets to be all sad with us - two birds and all that"
It took them a couple minutes for all four of them to fit onto the bed, but eventually - they managed it.
Sirius laughed childishly, Remus was as tense as a board, James seemed unbothered, curling his hand into Sirius' shirt, Peter had no idea how to feel.
After a while, they all seemed to decide that this was actually pretty nice - Peter fell asleep surprisingly quick.
He was woken by a flash of light, followed by Frank's laughter and Sirius bounding from the bed to tackle him to the ground, trying and failing to force the camera from his hands as Frank began to make his escape from the dorm room.
Remus groaned, clearly upset to be woken from his sleep, curling into the now empty space Sirius had left and around James' still unconscious body.
Peter laughed softly - his friends were weird.
