Lily’s heat ended three days early, a surprise which Severus attributed to the Contraceptive Potion.
A week passed, then two.
Severus and Lily settled into their new lives as mates, no longer living on fragile eggshells as best friends who harbored secret love for each other.
Their nights were spent sleeping snuggled together in their warm bed.
They shared meals with a relaxed sense of familiarity.
Evenings were often passed making love on the sofa instead of sitting stiffly shoulder to shoulder, trying not to think about what they’d rather be doing.
Lily had never been so happy, her imprisonment aside.
Severus had never felt so fulfilled.
Regardless of his inner delight, Lily frowned as she began to notice that each time one of their many kisses ended and Severus pulled away, he wore a deep frown on his pale face.
“Sev?” She asked one evening, “Why do you look like that when we stop kissing? You’re the one who ends it, if you want to go on a bit longer, I’m perfectly willing.”
“No, it’s…….not that.” Severus replied.
“......Then what is it?” She blinked.
Severus shook his head and turned to look at the fire, but Lily stopped him.
“Sev!” She laughed in feigned offense.
Severus turned his black eyes onto her again.
“Don’t look away from me! I’m your……well, I’m yours and your mine.” She smiled as she intertwined their fingers, “We’re a couple now….and best friends before all this, weren’t we? There’s nothing you can’t tell me!”
“Many things I haven’t though.” Severus frowned.
“I haven’t always told you everything either.” Lily chuckled, “Saved the bit about me being in love with you for years, didn't I?”
“If you loved me, then why did you go with Potter?” Severus frowned.
“Because I wanted him and the others to leave you alone.” Lily pouted, “And after the fifth time that I asked him, that afternoon when they ambushed you again, I knew he wouldn’t stop until he got what he wanted.”
Severus scowled as she shrugged and said, “I actually didn’t see him that much, it was a small price to pay to get him and his lot to leave you alone.”
“Your sacrifice was unnecessary, Lily.” Severus huffed as he looked into the flames again and squeezed her hand, “Potter and his accomplices never frightened me.” He fibbed before he proudly told a definite truth, “I held my own each time they attacked.”
“Well, I did and it’s done.” Lily nodded, “Is that really why you frown at me? Because of James? Sev, if we’re going to be together, you’ll have to forgive me.”
“No.” Severus confessed in an honest, tired sigh, “Potter’s not the reason, it irritates me beyond measure to have to hide and wait here.”
“Hide and wait?” Lily scowled.
“I want you to be my wife.” Severus confessed as he turned to look at her again, “I want us to have a home, not a prison, a real home. While I have no intention of fulfilling Voldemort’s desire, that does not take away my own need to have a family with you, my love, even if that family is only you and I.”
Lily rewarded him with another soft kiss before she pulled back and pressed her forehead against his, “Oh, Sev, I’d marry you now if we had someone here! I’ll marry you tonight, tomorrow, anytime! I’m yours…..”
Severus’s hands instinctively moved to hold her hips as she lifted her head and moved into his lap to let him cradle her there.
“And you’re mine.” Lily said possesively while her knees drifted to the outsides of his thighs as her hands came up to cup his face.
“I’m yours, Lily………always.” Severus vowed as he let his lips ghost along the outer edge of her index finger where it lay close to his mouth.
“If it wasn’t for that potion, I’d already be carrying your son or daughter.” She mused with a wry smile.
Severus took the statement as a flirtation until tears formed in her eyes at the lasting sadness that notion brought before a hand flew to cover her mouth as a wet sob threatened to escape.
“Lily…….” Severus whispered as he gently clutched her close while she began to cry, “Do not weep, my love, we are both very young and this is only temporary. Once the war is won and you and I are established, I’m certain that we’ll have many, many children.”
Lily draped an arm around Severus’s neck before she wiped her face with one hand and glanced up as she asked, “You really think so, Sev?”
“No.” Severus drawled as he gazed at her, “I know it to be true.”
Lily laughed as her melancholy frown vanished into a bright smile.
A kiss reconnected them once more while the fireplace roared.
Severus had never spent much time envisioning himself as a father, merely as having Lily by his side.
What had he expected?
Omegas loved children.
As Severus began to slip Lily’s robes off of her beautiful body once more while their kiss deepened, he imagined her swollen and heavy with their little ones.
If Lily, his lover, his mate, wanted to bear his sons and daughters, then he saw very little reason to deny her that right.
“One day, my love, one day……” Severus promised in his deep, hypnotic voice as he laid her back on the sofa and kissed down the center of her naked form, careful not to ignore her breasts as he went.
Severus didn’t notice, but as he nipped at her rosy tips, Lily surprised herself by grimacing in the split second of sharp, unusual pain the sensation caused.
Unfortunately for the young couple, it was far too soon for either of them to realize that their distant dreams would soon become the makings of a living nightmare.
Voldemort was more adept at achieving his goals than most people realized, even his loyal officer, Severus Snape.

The cottage Severus and Lily had been assigned to inhabit maintained a constant coating of dust.
No matter how many times a day Lily cleaned, or what method she used to do so, the windowsills especially seemed to hold a certain level of dirt.
When headaches began to plague her several weeks after the heat she had spent with Severus, she attributed it to an allergic reaction.
As they increased in severity and frequency over the next fortnight, Severus’s concern grew with each passing day.
Eventually, at his insistence, Lily sat in a healer’s office in Diagon Alley early one afternoon while her alpha finished teaching his daily classes at the castle.
When the door opened and the healer returned from examining the test results she had collected from her patient, Lily waited to be given a magical tonic for her trouble and sent on her way.
The beaming smile on the healer’s face caught her off guard.
“Well, let me start by saying congratulations, Miss Evans! Your mate will be quite pleased, I’m sure!” The healer chortled.
“I……beg your pardon?” Lily blinked, “Its certianly just allergies. May I have an extra strength tonic? I haven’t been able to buy riceena berries to brew one.”
“Oh, of course not!” The healer laughed, “I can’t possibly give that to a woman in your condition!”
“My……condition?” Lily blinked.
The healer beamed again, “That’s right, Miss Evans! You’re nearly five weeks pregnant!”
Lily faltered for words.
Suddenly, the room seemed to spin around her.
As she clutched onto the arm of the chair for support, her mind raced.
She…….carried a baby?
How?
What……
What about…..Severus….and….and
Voldemort?
