Fear and disbelief flooded Severus’s mind as he watched Voldemort leer at him in the darkness.

The Dark Lord’s shark-like teeth were put on full display by his heinous grin, amused at the plight of the doomed couple before him.

Severus did his best to save his darling as he struggled to present a believable lie, “This is impossible, my lord.”

“You know this woman?” Voldemort asked.

“As an acquaintance……” Severus nodded, “She’s a student……..nothing more. It is not plausible for her to fulfill the role you’ve assigned her, I’m afraid she’s infertile.”

Voldemort grinned at Severus.

Severus felt his anxiety rise as Voldemort held up a hand, “Is she?.........I see…….A student, Severus?.......Nothing more?”

“Nothing more.” Severus nodded.

“Then I suppose if she’s as useless as you say, the world will be better with one less mudblood in it.” Voldemort shrugged.

As he pulled his white wand from the insides of his tattered robes, Severus’s dark eyes widened.

“NO! DON’T!” He shouted as he lunged forward, his hand outstretched.

Voldemort released his grip on his wand with a sinister chuckle, “Oh, Severus……To be so gifted at Occlumency, I was expecting a bit more from you…..I suppose desire can only be restrained under the right circumstances. Don’t you agree, my friend?”

Severus’s heart thudded in his chest.

It was done, finished.

Voldemort had captured Lily.

Voldemort knew he had lied.

They would both be slaughtered and their bodies fed to one of the Dark Lord’s scaley monsters.

“There is nothing I can say, my lord.” Severus nodded as he bravely lifted his chin and accepted his fate.

Voldemort’s grin failed to fade as he laughed and replied, “The fear is plain on your face, Severus! My research is irrefutable, you are to produce my opposer with this woman! Do you really think I would harm either of you? How could I possibly turn my future enemy into a powerful ally if they never exist?!” He cackled.

Severus frowned.

Lily panted for breath against the black, cobweb-like bonds of sticky, stringy dark magic that had edged into her mouth.

Her green eyes bulged as she glanced from Severus to Voldemort, terrified of what would happen next.

Would she die?

………Or watch Severus die instead?

Would they both be tortured into madness?

The urgent terror of the situation practically blinded her to Severus’s heartwarming display of heroism.

He had gambled his own life just by reaching out to her.

What else could that possibly mean except-

“What are your orders, my lord?” Severus asked very seriously.

Voldemort sneered as he looked at Severus, “How brave and bold, Severus Snape, to assume that I still trust you. I confess, although I have caught you in a lie of great weight, I suppose I may……show mercy…..in this particular moment……You remain my best spy, even if you are a fool to protect a tarnished coin as if it were a great treasure.”

Severus stiffened as he bit back a hissing insult.

If a retort wouldn’t have ended Lily’s life and his on the spot, he would have gladly given the Dark Lord the verbal whipping he deserved for daring to compare Lily to a tarnished coin.

“My orders are exactly as I said.” Voldemort calmly replied, “I will give you exactly one year. Take your mudblood into that cottage,” Voldemort nodded as he used one slender, pale hand to point towards the small dwelling behind Severus, “......And produce the one foretold to oppose me. I’ve never much believed in destiny, but if this child has power I do not, I will of course, harness that power for my use and my use alone.”

Severus blinked at Voldemort as a swooping bat rushed through the air between them to chase a moth.

“My lord, if I-“ Severus began.

Voldemort was not interested in arguing.

“A year, Severus! A single year!” He roared as he wrapped himself in his tattered robes and shot off into the night, soaring across the full moon in a streak of broomless flight.

Lily cried out as her chains suddenly vanished and sent her falling.

Severus rushed forward to catch her just before her body collided with the forest floor.

“Sev!” Lily gasped as she clutched into him, “Sev!.........What are we going to do?! Oh, Sev, what are we going to do?!”

Severus used his velvet voice to whisper soothing words of comfort to his darling as he staggered towards the cottage with her in his arms.

At first, he worried about how to open the door, but as he approached, he realized the dwelling had been previously enchanted once the entrance opened to allow his and Lily’s passage.

“What are we going to do, Sev?!” She wailed as he brought her over and sat her on the velvet sofa that had been placed next to the fireplace in the small living room. “What are we going to do?!”

—————————————————————-

Severus was reeling as much as Lily, although his alpha instincts sent him rushing to relax her while he ignored his own dismay.

The entire cottage had been thoughtfully furnished and the kitchen well-stocked.

Severus quickly brewed himself and Lily large cups of chamomile tea, which they sipped as she sat on the sofa and he knelt next to her on the floor.

“T-The door…..” Lily whispered as she nodded at the entrance, “If we leave, he’ll see…..He’ll see and-“

“-Let us not worry about leaving tonight.” Severus nodded, “Even if we were to make a successful escape, he could find us in an instant. There’s nowhere we can run that will be out of his reach.”

Lily had never felt so threatened in her entire life, so utterly humiliated and defeated.

Too overwhelmed by the situation to offer any helpful suggestions, she put her head in her hands and began to weep.

“I…..I wasn’t planning on being a mother now!” She cried, “And he’ll……my baby….he’ll…..”

Severus’s brow furrowed in concern as he laid a sympathetic hand on Lily’s arm.

Keeping his tone low and calm, Severus sought to bring her some peace of mind, “Lily, please listen, it will-“

“-Are you even fond of me, Sev?” Lily asked as she glanced up.

Severus blinked, clearly insulted, “......Of course I’m fond of you.”

“You haven’t seen me since that kiss.” Lily whispered quietly.

“Because I couldn’t face the reality of your rejection.” Severus answered honestly.

A soft gasp left Lily’s lips as she stared into his face, “I…..never meant it as rejection, Sev.”

Together, there in their new prison, Severus and Lily gazed into each other’s eyes once more.

Lily sipped her hands into Severus’s.

He wasn’t entirely certain if Lily was pulling him closer or if he was headed towards her pink lips on his own, but a second later, his dark eyes closed as Lily pressed a hot, wet kiss against his mouth.

The terror of the situation seemed to melt away.

Severus raised a hand to lay his tapered fingers on Lily’s cheek and hold her tenderly.

That grim little cottage suddenly transformed into a shelter of loving affection.
