Hermione packed up the last of her belongings. She couldn't believe her days as an Apprentice were almost over.. looking over the free space now in the closet where her clothes used to hang… she felt truly nostalgic.
It wasn't over yet, she still had a few months left, but she'd leave the little cottage that'd been her home for the last two years. The university reserved them for Freshers and the fact that she'd had it for more a year had pure fortune.
This autumn marked the start of her exam months. Soon she'd hopefully have a double Mastery in Potions and Charms.
The door opened, revealing a dishevelled Severus Snape, leaves coming in as well, brought by the wind.
"Hermione, are you ready?"
She sighed. "I am. You know, two years ago when you said I shouldn't stay with you, because the other Apprentices might talk, I was sad but now…looking at these empty closets and bookshelves…I'm sad to leave this place behind."
He set the box he'd brought in down and hugged her. "I know what you mean. When I started at Hogwarts I couldn't wait to go…and when I left I was sad even if I didn't think I'd be. Now I'm sad to leave Oxford too. But this is another start for both of us."
She smiled at him. When she'd announced to him that she would Apprentice at Oxford Institute under Madam Vostra, renewed Potions and Charms Mistress, Severus had immediately applied to be a Professor at the institute too. He'd gotten private chambers inside the campus, but he'd often stayed at her little cottage.
Now they were both going back to Hogwarts. Slughorn was retiring for good and Minerva had asked him to come back.
"We should dance one more time," she said and took his hands dragging him outside.
"But there's no music!"
Hermione laughed and spinned him around, leaves swirling around their ankles as they danced.
"Look closely! I'm sure you can hear it!"
Autumn leaves falling down…like pieces falling into place…
Severus looked at her. "Hermione, that is a sad song."
"So? We're happy so we can make it happy!" And she kissed him. He raised her in the air and spinned her once more.
"Fine witch! Only 'cause I'm so enchanted by you."
