The Fundamental Laws of Magic

Most Theoreticians have agreed upon certain laws that they believe restrict a wix's use of magic. These laws are limited by our understanding of magic but as of yet, there is no record of these laws being broken without severe consequence to the perpetrator. Of course, there is nothing to say that these laws might not change one hundred years from now as magic evolves but this author finds that hypothesis highly unlikely.

The Law of Balance

The first law of Magic, otherwise known as the law of balance insists that the breaking of the laws of magic will lead to dire consequence. It also demands that all magic be balanced. This can be simply explained as cause and effect. Our actions have consequences.

If I, as a dark wizard, perform too much light magic my core will be depleted quicker, but equally if I use too much dark magic, my core magic will bleed into the surrounding world around me. This is often seen in the auras of certain ancestral homes of ancient families where they have historically had members of once specific core type. Magic must always be balanced. If we focus too heavily on one aspect of magic and not the other, we create an imbalance, that magic will rectify - at potentially great cost. Those with light or dark cores will naturally lean towards practicing the magics that come best to their cores. But it is important to still practice some magics beyond what comes easiest to your core type and we should be careful when prohibiting magic lest it leads to imbalance. Magic itself is not evil but rather the wix that wields it is responsible for what their magic does.

The Law of Exceptions

The second law of magic, states that certain things are outside of the reach of magic. It is important to state that Mother Magic and Magic are separate things. One is a deity with undefined limitations, while the other is a force or power provided by the other. Magic, the force or power, is limited to what Mother Magic determines it to be capable of. While Mother Magic has not communicated these restrictions in any known way, it is possible to determine them using study of magical developments over time. It would seem that the most notable exceptions are magics that try to influence the magics of Life, Death, Fate and Time.

For example, it is impossible to create love with magic. Even the most powerful of love potions merely mimic the feeling of love, creating something more akin to obsession and infatuation. And the use of these potions create something of an imbalance, leading to the breakage of not only one law of magic but two. The consequence being that any child born under a love potion is said to be incapable of feeling true love. It is unknown if this is true as people do not easily admit to the usage of love potions or being conceived under one.

Regardless of whether there is consequence for the breakage of the laws of magic, it is reasonable to say that it is impossible to create love based on previous attempts. Those that study the gift of Love have determined it to be a magic that falls into the realm of Amrita - the Gift of Life - and therefore does not fall under the purview of Magical Theory.

The only known exception to the Law of Exceptions is the killing curse which instantly kills its victim. This technically should fall under the purview of death magic and therefore Lord Death. However, that does not seem to be the case. Although no Magical Theoretician to date has been able to identify why. Unless we have unwittingly miscategorised the Killing Curse as dark magic when it is in fact Death Magic. Which is, of course, possible. Alternatively, it is possible that the Killing Curse itself breaks the laws of magic. This seems likely as the consequence of such an act is the tearing of one's own soul.

The Law of Limits

The third law of magic, determines that each individual wix is limited in their magic by what their magical core is capable of. This is both in terms of core colour and core power level. A dark wix will never be proficient in light magic to the same degree as a light wix, and vice versa, so long as they both have cores of the same magical potential. A dark wix with a larger capacity within their magical core may be capable of greater light magic than a weaker light magic wix, if the variance in capacity is large enough.

What causes these limits is harder to determine. As wixen can take power from the natural magic around them through various magical arts including the white magic art of Wild Magic and the Black Magic art of Evocation. However, in these instances our cores act as a focus for the magic, and even then our ability to wield the above mentioned arts seem to be greatly affected by our core strength. A more powerful wix will use these gifts with ease compared to a weaker wix. There is historic evidence that suggests that a greater connection to Mother Magic increases our core capacity. This is why most - if not all - Magical Theoreticians actively participate in the Old Ways of Conjuration (performing set rituals to worship the five known deities).

Another way magic is limited is in our ability to "create". We can transfigure and change many things but creation is altogether more limited. And at times even transfiguration is limited. For example with regards to Money and Food.

The Law of Inheritance

The fourth law of magic states that core colour and certain gifts of magic follow family lines. Such as the gift of parseltongue or the Metamorphmagus ability. This is not to say that Mother Magic could not choose to gift them to any worthy wix but that as of known record she has chosen not to and that they cannot be learned or gained through ritual of spellcraft. They are an intrinsic part of one's family magic. Trying to usurp another wix's inheritance is believed to be an abomination before Mother Magic and in known history has always results in the perpetrator losing their magic entirely.
