the first day
“Ah it’s good to be back boys” James sighed as he let himself fall back onto his bed. He had missed his friends and hogwarts terribly this summer.
A T.rex album Sirius had recently gotten from his cousins Andromeda was playing in the background as the four boys settled into their room. Remus was laying on the ground with his legs on sirius’s bed while reading a book. Sirius was laying on his bed bopping his leg against Remus’s feet while throwing a bouncy ball up in the air before catching it and repeating the action.
Peter was sitting on the ground next to remus setting up a game of wizarding chess.
“I still have so many questions about earlier today” sirius broke the comfortable silence, Remus looked up from his book and Peter and james looked up from the game in question.
“What are you on about mate?” Remus asked.
“I’m talking about Adhara and James mate” Sirius scoffed at remus who rolled his eyes and turned back to his book.
“What about it?” James asked curious to know.
“Well I don’t know, I’m just curious what happened, like did you two talk? It seems unlikely, Adhara never really talks to strangers”
“We had a small conversation, she ignored most of my questions and read her book instead” James explained, memories of the Black haired girl replaying in his mind. “Sounds like her yea” sirius shrugged.
After that the four fell back into silence apart from James and peter directing the chess pieces across the board. Yet James’s mind was still stuck on Adhara, he hoped he could get to know her better.
—
Cerci and Pandora were hopping down the stairs happy to start their first day of lessons, Adhara and Dorcas followed them, less enthusiastically, it being way to early for them to act like decent human beings.
Dorcas had put her locks up in a bun and was wiping the sleep from her eyes as they entered the great hall for breakfast. Pandora and Cerci had already found spots at the long tables having walked a lot faster than the other two.
There weren’t a lot of people, some either still in bed and others already on the quidditch pitch trying to get the first rounds of practice in after the summer. From her seat Adhara had the perfect view of the Gryffindor table where she quickly spotted her brother and his friends.
Sirius was laying with his head in his arms on the table probably sleeping again, a blonde haired girl at his side secretly making small braids into his hair while teaching a brown haired boy who was on his other side how to braid as well. The two filling sirius’s black hair with small braids while the boy slept on.
It warmed Adhara’s heart in a weird way that also hurt, like it burned her.
Across from the three James was sat with a blond haired boy next to him who was happily eating his breakfast while James was talking to a red haired girl on his other side.
Adhara caught his gaze and he smiled at her, it took Adhara off guard so she quickly looked away and turned to her dorm mates who were discussing which lesson they were more excited for.
Pandora was excited for transfigurations and charms while Cerci was interested in flying and history of magic “what class are you most excited for?” Pandora asked Adhara adding her into the conversation.
“Probably potions and herbology” she shrugged.
“still help your dad in his lab?” Pandora asked and Adhara nodded.
Her father worked in potion making and Adhara was often found helping him either in the green house or in his lab, she was excited to learn more but also to be the top in her class as she knew she could be.
Their first ever lesson was history of magic which was given by a literal dead person who lived the history himself, professor binns, a ghost.
Cerci’s excitement for the class quickly died out as the teacher dragged on and on in a monotone voice making Adhara struggle to keep awake and eventually she fell asleep about halfway through the lesson.
“Oi”
“Psst”
“Black?”
“Ey black, wake up”
Adhara shot up from the feeling of something poking her cheek and she stared at the boy next to her with wide eyes clutching his wrist.
The boy, Barty crouch, was grinning at her holding his quill in hand which he poked her with. Adhara let go, reached her hand out to her cheek and pulled it back with ink on her finger tips. “Great” she mumbled glaring at the boy.
“Oi, you were the one who had to drool over our assignment” crouch chuckled.
“I do not drool” Adhara scoffed crossing her arms. Who did this crouch kid think he was.
“Oh no your grace, you’re too angelic to drool” Crouch mocked and Adhara gave him a light shove.
“How long was I asleep for?” She asked him “eh about half an hour, I don’t blame you, was close to nodding of meself” Crouch shrugged as he turned to the right page in their book.
Barty explained the assignment to her and the two got to work quickly finishing it before the class ended.
They handed it in and exited the room together, Barty stopped her in the middle of the corridor “you still have ink on your cheek” Crouch chuckled, reaching his hand up, carefully wiping the ink away with his sleeve. Adhara’s breath hitched at how close the other boy was, not being used to it.
“That’s better” he smiled at her before taking a step back “see yah” he waved at her before turning around and walking down the other end of the corridor.
“What was that?!” Pandora gasped appearing on her left side, Cerci going to stand on her right, both with questioning looks.
“The idiot poked me with his quill because I fell asleep” Adhara explained.
“You two would be cute together” Cerci mused and Pandora hummed in agreement nodding dreamily.
“what? No! Ew, I barely know the dude, and also EW” she quickly started walking to their next lesson and the other two followed while chuckling.
They made their way across the grounds and to the greenhouse where they would have their second lesson of the day, herbology, Adhara was really excited to see the hogwarts greenhouse, but she didn’t tell anyone, not wanting to seem like a wuss.
They all filed into the greenhouse and Adhara looked around with a barely contained smile. They were ordered to stand around a long table in the middle of the room, she could see the boy from before, crouch, laughing with his friends at the other side of the table.
“Welcome, students welcome, I’m professor sprout and I will be taking you on your journey to learn about herbology” professor sprout was head of hufflepuff who the Slytherins shared this class with, Adhara had always been told Hufflepuff was for losers.
“Now what is herbology?” The woman clapped her hands together and looked around the students expectantly.
“herbology is the study along with the use of magical and non magical plants” a slytherin boy answered.
“correct, five points for slytherin, yes students we are studying both magical and non magical plants, you may find this odd but as we’ll discuss later in this lesson, just because something isn’t magical doesn’t mean it is useless”
Sprout went on by going over this year’s syllabus and explaining the grading system just like professor Binns had done.
For the rest of the lesson she explained some of the basics of herbology and why it is an important part of potion making and healing.
Cerci and Pandora were both eagerly taking notes while Adhara just sat and listened already knowing most of what the teacher explained.
“That ends your first lesson, before you go, pick up a copy of the outline for the year so you can study and plan ahead, there will be an optional introductory essay and a short quiz for homework, have a great week and goodluck with the rest of your lessons today” sprout ended the lesson and everyone packed up, grabbing a copy of the syllabus on their way out.
“I am already confused” cerci admitted as the walked out of the green house.
“Ditto” Pandora mumbled, Adhara stayed quiet she really didn’t know what the others found hard about it.
As the three entered the great hall Dorcas came over “and? How was it?” She asked, cerci and pandora immediately started talking while Adhara listened humming here and there.
A hand was placed on her shoulder as they were walking towards the table. Adhara winced and quickly spun around ready to attack, always being on high alert.
“Merlin Addie, no need to be all scared” sirius grinned at her.
“merde sirius, no need to scare me like that” her brother just chuckled taking his hand away from her shoulder.
“I was just going to ask you how your first lessons went” he explained.
“They went well, I liked herbology, history of magic really doesn’t go well with my lack of sleep”
Sirius chuckled at her and nodded “yeah binns is tiring”.
“Oi black you coming or what?” Someone yelled at sirius, who turned around revealing Adhara to potter who had been the one yelling. “Oh hi Adhara” he smiled at her as he walked closer.
“Bye” Adhara quickly said to her brother before turning around and speed walking over to the slytherin table.
At the end of the day Adhara found herself in the common room sorting through her notes and working on her homework with Cerci and pandora, Dorcas was sat on the couches with some second year girls.
Adhara believed her time at hogwarts really wouldn’t be half as bad as she expected it to be.
