With the end of her club, Grace pressed the wet grass, the end of her lip curling as it sank slightly into the ground. Just her luck that the only course on campus was completely rained out, on one of the only days she had completely to herself. She struck the ground in aggravation, watching the dirt rise up and fall onto the ground with a sickening, but satisfying splat.
“Feh,” she breathed, resting one hand on her hip, the other still gripping the club like it'd personally done something to her. "This is such bullshit," she growled, tossing her club against the ground. She felt pissed on by the world, like the universe was out to get her, and it would be everyone else's problem.
“Yo,” a familiar voice called out from somewhere behind her, a shorter girl in a two sizes to big windbreaker sitting cross legged on a bench underneath a tree. “Grace! Over here,” she waved, a big, cheesy grin on her face clearly visible even with their distance. She held a little pink device in her hands, a piece of tech Grace could not name for the life of her.
Yeah, today was shaping out to be just her day.
She sent the other girl a question glance, before jogging over to meet her with her bag in tow. "What do you want, ya bum," she asked, one hand on her hip, one brow raised just slightly. In response, Cassidy merely scooted over, patting the space next to her with a smaller, albeit still cheeky smile on her face.
"I'm giving you the honor of sitting next to me, instead of punching the floor."
"Honor, huh? What makes you think you're so special?"
"My brain, Grace, duh. Get with the program, girl!" The older girl scoffed, but wiped the spot on the bench with the palm of her hand, collecting the small droplets that had gathered there in Cassidy's absence, before taking a seat. The redhead scooted right back up next to her, her arm pressed tight against Grace's in an act of familiarity the golfer wasn't so familiar with at all.
“Why’re you out here,” Grace asked, bluntly, pushing the wet pieces of hair from her face with the back of her hand. Cassidy scoffed (playfully) in response, shrugging her shoulders. "When did it become okay to keep your favorite gamer off the field," she joked, shoving Grace gently with her shoulder. “I don't see any ‘No Cassidy signs around!'”
The older girl scoffed. “Yeah, remind me to talk to Headmaster Tozu about that, it's starting to be a problem” Grace mumbled, slouching over like a child punished, her chin resting in the palm of her hand.
“Pssh, lighten up, Grace. Just cause it's called the Golf course, doesn't mean you can't use the space for anything else. It's a beautiful day outside! Birds are singing, flowers are blooming, all that jazz,” the gamer shook her head, whipping the device in her hand open with a flair only she could recreate. “Besides, now that you're not working, you can help me do something wayyyy better,” she smirked, flipping the small stylus around in her hand and tapping a few buttons on the small, slightly low quality screen. A short opening sequence played on the screen, followed by a title screen displaying the brightly colored words spelling “Tomodachi Life.” Grace grimaced.
“The hell is this,” she asked, a furrow in her brows as she watched Cassidy press a few more buttons, looking at her like this was some kind of magnum opus. "If you wanted someone to play around with, you should've went to Toshiko."
“It's a video game, Grace, come on,” she groaned, hanging her head slightly as she leaned a bit further into Grace's shoulder, almost slumping into her, Grace having to push her off to keep her upright. “You put these little guys on an island and just watch em do stuff. I'm gonna put our classmates in it,” she explained, pointing at the screen with her hand like it was obvious.
“That's fuckin weird.”
“Whoa ho ho, okay, buzzkill,” Cassidy frowned, her tongue sticking out slightly from her mouth. “Just for that, I'm giving you a weird face. And making you marry Bargain Bin.”
“Fuck no, give me that,” Grace took the device from the gamers hand, holding it away from her before she could do anything. “How do you work this stupid thing,” she asked, holding it closer to her face to press the way too little buttons with her finger.
“Hey, gimme that back, I'm not even making you yet,” the gamer whined, failing to reach the 3ds as it was held high above her head. Grace looked down at her, narrowing her eyes a bit before pressing some more buttons, then going back to studying her face again. After a few seconds, she smiled pridefully, presenting Cassidy with her creation.
A beautiful redheaded stranger.
“Who dis,” Cassidy asked, spinning the fella around a few times yet never catching anything recognizable. Grace scoffed, flicking the gamer's forehead. “You, ya drongo. Who else would it be?”
"..."
“Grace, have you ever seen me,” Cassidy held in a chuckle, letting it loose after being shoved affectionately by the golfer.
“Whatever, just make me now,” the taller girl rolled her eyes, leaning back against the bench and kicking up her leg. Cassidy hummed, smiling down at the screen as she registered the new mii. She took longer than Grace, her tongue peeking from the corner of her mouth in concentration as she shuffled through her options, preparing what could only be considered perfection. A few times Grace leaned over to look, but was met by Cassidy's cold shoulder and a light scolding. When the shorter girl was done, she held the device in both her hands, holding it up to Grace like a dish on a silver platter. Grace gently took it in her hands, scrutinizing it for every little detail. She whistled lowly, nodding her head a few times.
“Alright, I guess it's pretty accurate. Ain't as good as mine, but it's somethin,” she gave Cassidy the smallest smile, patting the top of her head a few times.
“Aw, they're friends, Grace,” Cassidy grinned, poking the girl's cheek a few times before her hand was quickly slapped away. On the screen, the little people sat together in a dull room, chatting away animatedly. It was like looking in on a hamster from its cage. "I guess there's gotta be one universe," Grace hummed, shrugging her shoulders.
"Um, what's that supposed to mean."
“Good afternoon students, I'm sure you're all having fun dilly dallying and such, but pressing matters need to be discussed immediately!! Report to the auditorium post haste!”
The headmaster's canny voice rang throughout the air, temporarily destroying the relaxed atmosphere that had been built up with his announcement. Grace stood from the bench with a sigh, pressing her hands into her back with a grunt to get a good stretch. Cassidy let out a quiet little “boo,” before grabbing Grace's hand and pulling herself up.
“Welp, I guess it's all up to me to finish our island,” she smiled, hands proudly set on her hips. "Don't remind me, seriously."
Cassidy gasped in mock offense, her hand on her heart. "Have some faith in me, Grace! I hold the very thread of your life in my hands!! I am the ruler of your fate!"
Cassidy slid the ds into her pocket, zipping it up, and taking off. “Speaking of fate... last one there owes the other a soda!”
Grace ran after her with a growl, at a great disadvantage with how she almost slipped in the mud a few times. “You're a billionaire, dill weed,” she yelled, catching herself from falling face first into the mud on the bench before chasing after her again.
Later that night, as Grace prepared herself for bed, she received a text message from a hardly ever opened number.
Amber
They're in love <3
(Attached is an image of a mii resembling Grace and a nondescdipt redheaded mii sitting on the floor, hearts surrounding them)
Grace spit the toothpaste from her mouth, tying her hair into a ponytail while using her free hand to type up a response.
