Prologue
Magnus Bane, High Warlock of Brooklyn, loved surprises. He loved his friends and he hated babies. So when one of the two miniature versions of two of his close friends arrived on his doorstep, unannounced, and swaddled in her baby blanket, he didn't quite know what to think.
Thankfully, Minerva McGonagall, another friend of his, and one who could actually explain what was going on, accompanied the baby. Her brown hair which was usually tied back in a meticulous braid hung over her shoulders in a mess. Her eyes were bloodshot and when she spoke, her voice was raw, as though she had been crying.
"They're gone, they're gone, they're gone."
"Minerva? Darling, what's the matter?" Magnus wrapped his arm around her and took the baby from her hands, leading them into the apartment.
"The Potters. He killed them. He killed them all." She spoke while taking in gasping breaths. Magnus waved his hand and a cup of tea, green with two sugars, just the way she liked it, appeared on the coffee table.
She reached forward and let the cup of tea warm her cold hands. When she tried to lift it, her hands were trembling so much that the cup clattered against the saucer. She waited for a few minutes and only until she was slightly calmer, did she speak.
"Sirius Black was working with the Dark Lord. He leaked James and Lily's address and the Dark Lord broke into their house and killed them. I don't really understand what happened but he vanished without harming either of the babies. But James and Lily are dead. Everyone thinks that Harry and Kavya," She paused jerking her head to the baby Magnus was holding rather uncomfortably, "had something to do with his disappearance. People all over the country have been celebrating. But these babies just lost their parents. Dumbledore wants to separate them, to see how they will adapt to different climates. He fears that the Dark Lord will come back and believes that at least one of them is fated to defeat him. Harry has been sent to live with Lily's sister's family."
Minerva took a deep breath. "And, well, I suggested asking if you were alright with raising Kavya. You were friends with the Potters so she wouldn't be with a complete stranger. You have magic, and although it isn't the same type wizards and witches do, it is strong enough to protect her in case any of the Dark Lord's followers decide to seek revenge. It's better to separate the two in case something happens to the other."
There was a long pause in which Magnus studied the cooing baby on his lap. She reached a chubby hand out towards his face and jerked it to the side, slapping him as hard as a baby could. When Magnus gave her a half-hearted glare, Kavya giggled, her feet kicking up in the air.
"I need time to think," Magnus whispered.
Minerva nodded. "If you want, you can spend the day getting to know her. I would need an answer by 8 pm."
He nodded back, his attention on the small mass sitting on him. Minerva apparated away but it only took Magnus a few minutes to scribble his answer on a piece of paper and send it to her as a fire message.
Yes.
