Truth or Truth?
Peter, Remus, Sirius, James, Lily, Mary and Marlene are all in the common room slightly “drunk” (on butterbeer) after celebrating their quidditch win. They’re the only ones left, everyone’s gone back to their rooms to go to sleep. They decide to play some games.
Their first game is Truth Or Truth (because they’re all too lazy to actually do anything), give them a little credit for the name, they came up with it at eleven o’clock, after the reasonable people (those who had exams the next day) went to sleep.
“I’ll start.” Mary says, and turns to Remus, “Hey Remus, truth or truth?”
Remus pretends to contemplate his options. “I think I’m going to have to go with truth.”
“Where do you disappear to every full moon?” Mary asks him. James, Sirius and Peter all look at eachother worried, they know that Remus goes to the shrieking shack, because they go with him, but Mary, Marlene and Lily don’t.
“I go to the shrieking shack.” Remus answers, and before the girls can badger him with asking why, he turns to Peter. “Hey Peter, truth or truth?”
“Truth” Peter says, not getting that the point of the game is to pretend to make a hard decision because there’s really only one option, he’s dense like that.
“What was the first book you ever read?” Remus asks, and everyone who’d been quietly whispering to themselves hushed up, it wasn’t the most interesting question, but they were all curious to see what Peter would say.
“The Standard Book of Spells, the first one.” Everyone laughs at Peter’s answer, then Peter blushes realizing what his answer implied. “My mum decided to teach me with a book I’d actually need.” Peter says trying to clarify, but no body actually heard him because they’re all still laughing at him.
He rushes to chose his question victim. “Lily,” he says “what do you think my animagus would be if i had one?” Again, Peter is very bad at this game, and doesn’t quite get it. James, Remus and Sirius exchange a look, because this was actually a terrible question, but since Peter actually does have an animagus, they want to see if Lily can guess right.
“I think you’d be a rat, Peter, they’ve got tiny brains and eat a lot.” She says, then blushes realizing just how much she just insulted Peter. James and Sirius are obviously roaring with laughter, because they’ve got low humor levels and only really laugh at the expense of others or themselves. They’ve got really bad humor. Remus smiles, because Lily was very right.
“James.” Lily says, and all the laughter stops as everyone moves to stare at James. “Truth or truth?”
“I think I’m going to have to go with Truth,” he answers, “it was a tough decision, but i feel it was the right one.”
“What’s it going to take to get you to stop asking me out?” She demands. Sirius, Peter and Remus start laughing, because Lily asked a question they already knew there was only one answer to.
“Easy.” James says, “the day you say yes to me asking you out, and actually go out with me, is the day I stop asking.” Lily groans at hearing that the only way to escape his pursuits is to give in to them.
“Lily,” James shoots the spotlight back on his questioner, “truth or truth?”
“Truth,” Lily says ready to be done with the question exchanges between her and James.
“What will it take to get you to go on a date with me?” James asks and everyone laughs, they know all she wouldn’t go on a date with him if he were the last person on the planet.
“Be a different person,” Lily says, then clarifies, “and i don’t mean change your personality, i mean dont be James Potter.”
“Sirius,” She says. “Truth or truth?”
Sirius, like Remus, pretends to think for a while about his answer, or tries to at least. After a half second he’s got his answer ready. Sirius isn’t a very patient person. “Truth”
“What did slughorn’s amortentia smell like to you?” Lily asks as Sirius’s pale skin blushes the same red as the rest of the Griffindor common room. Sirius looks at his feet and the glass of butterbeer in his hand.
He mumbles something that only Remus, with his amazing (werewolf) hearing can understand. “Chocolate?” Remus says, amazed, confused and maybe just the tiniest bit hopeful about what that might mean. Sirius just takes a quick sip of his butterbeer and somehow gets redder. They all take that to be a yes.
“Marlene.” He says quickly, eager to get the attention off of him. “Truth or truth?” He fidgets as he waits for her answer, as she pretends to decide between the two, he decides that this game is much more fun when he isn’t the one talking. He really doesn’t have the patience for that.
“Truth.” Marlene says after seven (agonizing (for Sirius at least)) seconds.
“Do you fancy anybody?” Sirius asks with a grin.
“Yes.” Marlene answers blushing.
“Who?” Everyone (except Marlene, obviously) says together, and the marauders are shocked that even Lily and Mary, Marlene’s best friends, don’t know who it is she fancies.
“Now that cheating, my question was only about if I fancied someone. You’ll have to wait until my next turn to ask.” Marlene is a very smart girl, she knows exactly how to dodge a question, especially when it’s one she doesn’t want to answer. This is why despite never participating, she somehow has an excellent participation grade in all her classes.
“Remus,” she says, deciding he’s the least likely to ask her about who it is she fancies. “Truth or truth?”
Remus pretends to debate the pros and cons of choosing truth over truth and vice versa. “Truth,” he ‘decides.’
“Do you fancy anyone?” Marlene asks, deciding she wants to steer the focus of crushes and such far away from herself. Remus blushes and looks down, then nods to avoid answering out loud. He receives the same reaction to this information as marlenes yes did, and he too dodges it well.
Though he, unlike Marlene, does not carefully calculate his next pick on least likely to ask him who he fancies. “Mary,” he says, directing his attention to the only person who is yet to answer a question. “Truth or truth?” He asks, ‘curious’ as to which one she’ll chose. (Narrator cutting in here, I’m so sorry about all of them, but it’s late, they’re bored and they have nothing (a lot of classes) going on tomorrow, and they’re teenagers who are so tired from cheering for the quidditch game (or playing in it, in the cases of James, Mary and Sirius) so please forgive them for their terrible game playing antics and choice in game.)
As Mary pretends to make the hard decision between the two, Sirius leans over to Remus, and whispers to him; “hey mate, so who is it that you fancy? You can tell me i won’t tell anyone.” Remus shakes his head and shoots back a, you have to ask me as a game question. He’s just trying to delay telling Sirius that it is him who he likes (scandalous, gay love (that was sarcasm if you couldn’t tell (your narrator is very gay (ish (aceflux and demiromantic and sapphic)))), luckily for Remus, Sirius forgets about five seconds after that he planned to ask him about it when he got the chance. (Narrator again, sorry about cutting in so much but this actually happened to me during a game of truth or truth. (Kind of sad actually (both the girls i like were there) course it could’ve been worse and i could’ve had to tell them (I’ll stop venting about my lack of a love life now))).
“Truth.” Mary decides after what seems to Remus to be a million years, but that’s probably just because he’d been dying inside from Sirius asking him about who he fancied. In reality, it was only about five seconds. Remus takes a deep breath, and tries to cool down and stop sweating from Sirius’s question.
“Where did you learn quidditch so well?” He asks, partly because he’s impressed by her skill, and partly because he wants to learn more about quidditch to impress Sirius (he’s hopeless).
“My uncle, and my older brothers and cousins. They were all quidditch fanatics, I just thought they were really cool for it, so I asked them to teach me.” She shrugs.
“That’s.. actually really cool.” Remus says, then waits for Mary to chose her victim.
“Sirius.” She says, “truth or truth!”
“Truth!” Sirius says, because he’s super impatient.
“what’s your real middle name?” She asks, and everyone looks confused, because they know his middle name is Orion.
“It’s Therorion.” Sirius says blushing, then without asking truth or truth, as were and are the rules of the game (ish, no one stopped Peter) he shoots back at her, “How did you know I lied about my middle name?” Sirius has no patience, and he really wants to know why she anything about his real middle name.
“Regulus told me.” She looks away. Everyone is shocked by this.
“You talk to my brother?” Sirius asks, well demands really, he knows she isn’t going to answer, it isn’t his turn to ask, but he can barely get to Regulus to talk to him in the hallways, and his slytherin friends are so annoying Sirius doesn’t want to talk with him in the hallways, but maybe, through Marlene he can talk to him somewhere else.
“Well, Regulus told Dorcas who told me.” She clarifies, she knows she didn’t have to answer that question, but she makes an exception just this one time because he just looks so excited at the possibility of talking to his brother without impediments (his rude friends) that she feels a need to.
Sirius looks down disappointed. “James.” Marlene calls out, “truth or truth?”
“Oooh… yeah that’s a really difficult choice, I really can’t pick, but I’m gonna try my luck and go with truth.” James says at last.
“What were you doing near the slytherin dorms last Friday?” Marlene asks, and everyone oooh’s, at him and at her. At why he was there, and at why she knows he was.
“Visiting a friend.” James answers, short and crisp and avoiding of the real answer that is he went to talk to regulus for Sirius, to try to convince him to talk to his brother more often. But he doesn’t want to risk embarrassing Sirius like that, or worse, admitting to Sirius that he couldn’t convince his brother to give talking to him a chance.
All the marauders look hurt at James’ answer, “I thought we were your only friends?” Peter says confused. (It was a bit rude, but Peter’s a bit dense so…) Everyone laughs at Peter’s comment, and he, being Peter, doesn’t know whether they’re laughing at him or his comment, so he starts to laugh with them as to not feel left out.
“Evans.” James chokes out through his laughter. “Truth or truth?” He asks.
“Truth” Lily says, getting a little too tired to keep up with the charade of pretending. The laughter dies down as they wait to see what James is going to ask Lily. None of them think it’s going to be a very good question (because even though Peter is dense, he’s not completely stupid, and the rest of them are quite intelligent).
“Will you go to Madame Puddifoot’s with me this weekend?” James asks, and all the Marauders laugh as they predicted a question along those lines.
“No.” Lily says, exasperated with his attempts to get him to go out with her. So she turns to Remus.
“Remus, truth or truth.” She asks. He makes a big show of making the decisions, but settles on;
“Truth.”
“Have you ever cut class?” She asks. And his eyes widen and he looks away from her. The girl’s eyebrows go up in shock, perfect student, Remus Lupin, almost top of the class, competing only with James, Sirius, and Lily in all subjects, has skipped class? (Scandalous, I wonder if his mother knows)
“Yeah,” he admits, then looks at the time. “It’s midnight, we should probably go to sleep before the elves get here.” The others look at the clock too, and realize that he is, of course, completely right. Remus is the logical one after all. So they all head up to their dorms to go to sleep. And some questions are left, thankfully for some, and unfortunately for others, unanswered.
