Detention

Mary was taking apart her pen, twisting the tip and removing it and the spring from the barrel. Afterwards, she took the plastic surrounding the ink chamber and dismembered it from the ballpoint tip. Mary then used her long fingernails to stab into the pen, black ink spewing all over her hands. She groaned and raised her ink-covered hand in the air, angrily staring at the oblivious teacher ahead.

Peter Pettigrew, who was sat next to her, had to of noticed this and called out for the professor who was a few tables ahead. "Mr. Flitwick!" He yelled, and the midget-like professor seemed to turn around swiftly.

"Yes?" He scanned the room for whoever was calling for him, before his eyes landed on Peter. Peter gestures towards Mary who was sat next to him, her ink covered hand dripping onto the maths desk. "Oh, go on to the bathroom." He said with ease, before turning back and helping the student who he was assisting before.

Mary gave Peter a grateful smile before she begun to get out of her seat, clenching her teeth and cringing at the scraping noise which the chair made against the floorboards. Mary then continued out the door, taking her time as she wondered through the corridors. She glanced into every classroom, waving happily when she noticed Lily focusing in English.

Marlene was sat on the opposite side of the classroom to Lily, dozing off, and so she decided it'd be better not to bother her. Mary continued down the hallways, one time even opening the door to Sirius' lesson and sitting down in an empty seat next to him for a total of four minutes before Mrs. Sprout had kicked her out.

Finally, after twenty minutes of not doing as she was supposed to, Mary entered the student bathrooms on the first floor which were strategically placed nearby the office. There was a girls and boys side, labelled with the classic grey stick woman wearing a triangle for a dress, and a stick man without any specific features but could still be clearly seen as a man. She obviously went towards the girls side.

There was a set of six cubicles on each side, each with stall doors which reached from the floor to the ceiling. She didn't need a cubicle, though, so she made her way towards the multiple sinks, which were placed in front of the large mirrors. As she approached the sink, that's when she realised her mistake. She reached forward to turn the handle, but flinched away before she actually made contact with the water. "Fuck." She muttered, pulling away swiftly.

She defeatedly strutted out of the bathroom, short of confidence as her hands swung by her hips. Once she had gone back into class, not only had her teacher scolded her for being out for over half an hour, but she also received detention which she'd be serving later.

Fuck.

Mary spent the rest of the lesson playing naughts and crosses in the corner of Peter's page and passing notes, causing Peter to accidentally fling his pen across the room when he lost a match. Mary looked up from her laughter to realise that Lily and Marlene were stood outside, waiting for her to be let out.

The class packed away their things, and all hurried out in a crowd. "Homework is due for five days from today!" The teacher called after them all, and Mary scoffed. No way she'd do the homework.

"Swear you got a detention?" Marlene teased, her hair ruffled as if she'd just woken up from a nap (or been dragged through a bush).

"Two, actually." Mary replied, sticking her tongue out.

"What for?" Lily sighed, already used to Mary's rebellious nature.

"One lunchtime from Mrs. Sprout for sitting next to Sirius during her biology lesson, and one after school for being gone for half an hour." She didn't care, honestly. You're allowed to do homework in detentions, so Mary just hides her phone behind her books and texts Lily during it.

"First day back and you've already gotten detentions?" Marlene asked, not too surprised, maybe impressed, even. "Nice!" Marlene said, raising her hand for a high five. Mary smirked and slapped the palm of Marlene's hand with her own. Lily sighed from next to them, before turning and heading downstairs alone.

"Where you going?" Mary asked Lily.

"Library, I'm meeting James there for our science project." Lily said, simply. Mary loved Lily and James' friendship, but it felt a bit uncomfortable knowing that James used to be absolutely smitten with Lily. Of course neither of them felt that way now, but it didn't settle right nonetheless.

"Oooh, is love in the air?" Marlene teased, swinging her arm around Lily whilst the three of them stood in a deserted corridor. Lily scoffed and crossed her arms.

"Actually, quite the opposite." Lily said quietly, shaking her head. Mary and Marlene gave her a confused look, so Lily stopped in her tracks and faced them both, her arms still folded. "I'm just not interested in him like that, besides..." She trailed off then turned on her heel to face the staircase which they were now at the top of, before walking down peacefully.

"Now, I'm interested." Marlene sighed, and Mary let out a shocked chirp before she began to hurry away.

"Sorry, I have my after school now, and my lunchtime tomorrow!" Mary shouted back at Marlene's startled expression. She felt guilty for leaving Marlene like that, but honestly, she needed that seat by the window badly.

When Mary walked into the second floor classroom, there were plenty of seats left. The history teacher, Professor Binns, didn't seem to notice her sneak in, so she decided to take a seat in the back corner. Unfortunately, Barty Crouch was already sat there, his feet up on the desk and his posture slouched. Mary settled for the row in front of his. Barty let out an exasperated sigh once Mary took her seat, causing her to spin around and shoot him the dirtiest look she could fathom. He merely grinned in return.

As she made herself comfortable, plopping her black rucksack on the floor, Mary decided to inspect her surroundings, taking in who else was in the room. Other than herself and Barty, there were three other students in the classroom with them. There was a girl sat on the front row, facing the teachers desk, along with a boy at the end of her row. There was another girl, as well, sat in the opposite corner to Barty.

The first girl, behind the teachers desk, was named Aurora Sinistra. She had long, black, silky hair which was braided. Her dark skin complimented her curved waist, but she acted like she didn't know this. Aurora had her head against the desk, and she was dozing off, unbothered that her jumper was rolled up at the bottom.

The boy at the end of her row was called Bruce Mulciber, if Mary recalled correctly. He was an infamous bully at Hogwarts High, and was probably in there for fighting or something along those lines. He had black, curly hair along with a bony complexion. His skin was a charcoal black, darker than Mary's but not as dark as Aurora. He was going on his phone under the desk.

The last girl, in the corner, was scribbling something down onto her notepad. Everybody in the school knew of Rita Skeeta, after all, she was the schools journalist, news reporter and gossip source. Her light blonde hair reached her lower back, and it was tucked behind her ears whilst she chewed gum. She was wearing bright red lipstick, green eyeshadow, an emerald green tank top paired with a leather jacket and had a very extravagant hat on of her head. Very against the dress code.

The detention was an hour long, and after ten minutes of nothing productive Mary was willing to jump out of the window. Coincidentally, two students in masks ran past the classroom in that moment, screaming profanities at the top of their lungs. Mr Binns immediately got up, and hurried outside, one hand on his pocket as his jacket swung with his steps.

He wordlessly chased after them, and the moment he left Mary heard a manic laughter from behind her. She turned her body around to see Barty clutching his stomach as he chuckled. "No way they actually did it!" Barty said to himself, a bit weird to talk to yourself but whatever.

"Who did what?" Rita called out from across the classroom, her voice sleepy.

"My mate, Evan, texted me about two minutes ago saying he and Cas would get me out of detention." Barty boasted, looking awfully proud of himself and his friends.

"And why would Dorcas Meadowes break you out of detention?" Mary asked, quirking an eyebrow. Dorcas was - to put it simply - unbelievably selfish. Mary had once seen her literally take candy from a baby. Barty scoffed and picked up his rucksack, lifting one strap over his shoulder and wearing it lazily. "Never mind that, where do you think you're going?" Mary began to stand up with him, grabbing her bag as well. From the corner of her eye, she noticed Rita and Aurora also grab their things and move towards them.

"Let's breakfast club this bitch." Barty declared, whilst shooting a 'don't you dare' look at Bruce. "Who's coming?" He asked Mary and the other two girls who had joined their sides at some point.

"I'm down." Aurora said calmly as she pulled herself onto a table and kicked her legs whilst she sat on it.

"Of course, I'm not spending another fifty minutes in here." Rita agreed quickly, leaning against the same table which Aurora was sat on. All three of them then turned to face Mary, who sighed and hesitantly nodded.

"You better not get me caught, Crouch." Mary crossed her arms, feeling a slight nervousness at the idea of sneaking around the school after hours.

"When have I ever been caught?" Barty teased, leaning against the wall at the back of the classroom where they were stood.

"Well you had to of been caught to wind up in here." Mary shot back, trying to sneakily hint that she was curious as to why he had wound up in here on the first day.

"Nah, got in a fight with old Brucey over there." Barty gestured towards Bruce, who was still sat at the front, only now he seemed to be asleep. "And I won, not before Mcgonagall caught us, though." He casually shrugged his shoulders, before leaning forwards and walking ahead of their small group. Mary gave an approving hum in return, at least he had won the fight.

"Can we go now?" Rita asked, bored. Barty nodded, and the four of them all began walking towards the door nearby the front of the classroom. Barty reached his hand out to twist the door handle, before pausing for a split second and shooting Mary a look, Mary silently nodded, understanding the unspoken question which he was asking.

She was ready to go.

─── ⋆⋅☆⋅⋆ ──

Barty had gone from utterly despising Mary MacDonald to being quite fond of her. The four of them poked their heads around the corners, checking that the hallways were empty. Barty's head was above Mary's, and she was pointedly keeping her distance from him whilst they checked. He stood straight and faced the rest of them whilst he talked, "Evan and Cas can keep him distracted for forty minutes maximum, don't be late, and if you're caught don't you dare fucking snitch." Barty tried to make his voice intimidating and commanding, just to emphasise how dead these losers would be if they ratted him out.

"How polite, anyways, I'll be in the IT department." Rita turned on her heel with that and skipped away. She was probably doing something to do with the school blog on there, and Barty hoped that he wouldn't have a mention.

"I'm going art room, I'm in the mood to paint some more walls." Aurora giggled, as she began calmly strutting towards the upwards staircase.

"And then there were two." Barty sighed, turning to face a grumpy looking Mary. "This isn't how the Breakfast Club goes. We're meant to stick together." He genuinely wanted to have his movie moment, but that would have to be another day, he supposed.

"You were actually serious about that?" Mary rolled her eyes, but all Barty could take notice of was the lipgloss making her lips shinier. Mary sighed and began down the hallway after not receiving an answer, and Barty followed like a lost puppy. After a few moments of walking in silence, Mary came to a halt and turned to face Barty. "Why are you still here? Didn't you want to escape and do something?" Her voice was raised slightly, but not so loudly that Barty would cringe.

"Does anybody ever have a plan for something like this?" Barty stared down at her, smirking at the scrunch in her nose and the crease in between her eyebrows. "It's just a mindless rebellion against the school."

"Emphasis on mindless." She said, in an almost whisper, whilst still looking up into his eyes. Their faces had become so close that he could feel her warm breath on his face, smelling the mint gum which she was chewing on. The tension could be cut with a knife, until she suddenly turned around and continued walking. Barty felt confusion wash over him, he was sure that was a moment of romanticism, but they didn't act on it, and Mary didn't seem like she wanted to.

He continued to follow behind her, as she aimlessly peaked around corners and explored the school. Mary would glance through the window of every classroom, never entering, though. Neither spoke at all, but there was a knowingness that spending time in each others company wasn't as bad as they'd once thought.

Mary finally entered a classroom, a science lab, to be exact. She opened most of the drawers, digging around in the, and pulling out things that she'd wanted.

Barty could admit now that Mary wasn't the basic girl he'd assumed her to be for all these years. She had a Bunsen burner, test tube, and stick of chalk laid out in front of her; Barty was intrigued. "You're planning on melting chalk?" He asked, suspiciously. Mary giggled sweetly.

"Kind of, I'm going to melt it down enough so that I can spread it around. Then, I'm going into Mr Flitwick's room and leaving the gooey substance everywhere. And I mean everywhere." Her voice was slightly raspy, and Barty couldn't help but stare at her in admiration. He couldn't repress the urge to do what he did next anymore, it was clawing away at him, and it had been for the past ten minutes.

He stepped forwards and placed his thumb beneath Mary's chin, before moving her head up slightly so that she was staring up at him, lips parted. She had confused, glassy eyes and her pupils were large as she stared up at him. Barty leant down slightly and placed his lips onto hers, as sparks flew around them. Mary dropped the test tube which was in her hands and engulfed Barty in a hug, whilst he slid his hands down her back and held onto her waist. He held her gently and lifted her onto the desk, and whilst their lips were still connected, she ran her hands through his mess of hair.

Barty was still held onto Mary's waist, before his hands slid down and now they were rested on her thighs. She hungrily made out with him, messing up his hair with one hand and gently stroking his cheek with the other. They did this for around thirty seconds before Mary finally pulled away, panting. "Holy shit, did I just make out with Barty Crouch?" Her voice was confused, and she seemed utterly shocked with herself. Barty was smiling fondly, though.

He looked up at Mary with eyes of admiration, and he continued to stare at her like this once she had jumped down from the desk and picked up the test tube again. Mary plugged in the Bunsen burner, turned on the gas, and held the test tube above the blue flame whilst the chalk inside liquidated. Barty was leant against the desk from the other side, watching her work with wide eyes.

"If you're gonna give me puppy dog eyes, you might as well help, you know?" She suggested, and Barty merely grinned as he took a step towards her, and then behind her back. He wrapped his arms around her waist, starting from just beneath her breasts and then making his way down to her lower-stomach. He then nuzzled his head into her shoulder, grazing her soft neck with a warm kiss. Mary giggled but didn't push him off of her, so he hoped that signified her liking it. Barty closed his eyes and allowed himself to inhale her lavender scent. "This isn't very helpful, you know?" Mary asked with a  sarcastic tone.

"Okay fine, what can I do for you?" Barty sleepily asked, still more focused on Mary's cold skin against his.

Mary then turned around to face him, breaking his hug. "We can't be a thing, Barty. You know that, right?" Barty could feel his heart shatter, but he wouldn't show it. Instead, he put on a brave face and tried to act nonchalant about it.

"I know, but you're beautiful and funny and you smell really good." Barty said, trailing off and mumbling on the last part.

"What was that?" Mary teased, she'd definitely heard exactly what he said.

"Oh come on, you just like the sound of my voice, love." He replied back, pacing around now.

"I'm certainly not your love."

"Why not?" He asked, sincerely. "What if, for one hour, we kissed and held each other and whispered sweet nothings into each others ears? Then, what if, when we come back in school tomorrow, we can act like nothing changed." He walked forward to face Mary, now. She was looking up at him with those same puppy-dog eyes that made him feel like a candle that reached it's end.

"But what if I can't get over you." She said in a hushed voice, an almost whisper, if you will.

"Then you don't, and neither will I." With that, Mary cupped his cheeks with both of her hands and pulled his face down to her, pressing her lips so firmly against his that she may of left a mark. Barty moved her hands to be draped over his shoulders, so he could once again hold her waist like he was never letting go, and she let him. Barty would make this hour count, he'd make sure that they'd both have the most memorable first day back.
