Angel- Jegulus
Regulus frowns, stepping back from the tree they’ve just finished decorating, he’s not sure what it is that’s wrong but there’s something missing.
“Are we done?” James asks, walking over and draping his arms over Regulus’ shoulders, leaning his head on top of his boyfriend’s and swaying them slightly as they look up at the newly lit-up tree.
“No. I don’t know what but we’ve missed something.” He grabs James' hands, interlinking them over his heart and twists to look at James more. He looks beautiful, the bright red and green lights making his eyes twinkle even more than usual, the soft smile on his face making Regulus’ heart skip a beat.
“The angel, it’s missing.” Regulus turns back to the tree, peering up to the top branch that’s upsettingly empty. Regulus hadn’t loved Christmas until he got to celebrate it properly with his friends and James’ family, now he had discovered how wonderful it could be he felt the need for things to be perfect, like he had to earn the joy of Christmas.
James wouldn’t have minded if they had just put up a random tree and decorated it randomly but Regulus liked to pick the best tree and the perfect decor and James loved Regulus so he was happy to do this too.
“We’ll just have to shrink you and put you up there then,” James tilts his head down, kissing down the side of Regulus’ neck. Regulus hums, still looking up at the tree, worrying slightly, they had completely cleared out the boxes of decorations already
“Where could it be?” He questions, not moving away from where he’s pressed against James' chest. “There isn’t anything left.” His voice is quiet, and he’s clearly upset, so James turns him around to hug him properly.
“Hey, hey, it’s okay, we can always get a new one.” Regulus isn’t really sure why he’s so upset over this but tears form in his eyes and his voice breaks as he speaks.
“But you loved that one.” James tuts, pulling away to kiss Regulus slowly, before looking him in the eye,
“I loved that one because you picked it, you could’ve picked the strangest, ugliest thing ever and I would’ve still loved it because you picked it out for me.” He reassures Regulus, wiping his thumbs over his cheeks to get rid of the tear tracks. “Please don’t be upset about it, we can look for it, and if we don’t find it we can get a new one.”
Regulus nods, leaning up to kiss James, not saying a word before he goes and starts searching through the boxes they brought out of storage that morning. James can tell he’s still beating himself up about this, but he doesn’t think anything he could say right now would help.
He’ll reassure Regulus again later, when he isn’t so upset, but right now he’s just going to help look for the angel.
