Chapter 15: You and I, in every universe
Was it wrong that Harry was kind of relieved that Louis didn’t take his hand? He had offered it, knowing that it was the right thing to do, but in his heart was he so sure that as soon as they got out of that cafe that he wouldn’t drop it again? At least this way they would never have to find out. The two boys strolled the streets of hogsmeade for a while, stopping to look at the store windows boasting the newest broomsticks and the vendors selling candy on the streets. Eventually they got to the pet store where Harry bought his owl: The Magical Menagerie.
“Harry, Harry can we go in pleasepleasepleasepleasepleaseeee” Louis asked, well rather demanded.
Harry laughed, more in fondness than in humour.
“Of course Lou let's go in.
As they entered the store Harry’s ears were bombarded by a symphony of different animal noises, the hoos from the owls, the ribbits from the frogs, the scurries from the various different rodents and Harry’s personal favourite the meows from their feline friends. Louis, a man after Harry’s heart, made a beeline for the kittens that the store had on display. As he picked them up and played with them Harry couldn’t help but compare the two, bright eyed, so full of wonder about the world and undeniably adorable. Louis motioned Harry over to the cat tree holding said kittens and gave Harry one to hold.
“He looks like you Haz” Louis giggled
And Harry would be lying if he didn't see the resemblance the kitten sported brown fur complemented with its gorgeous green eyes. And it seemed to constantly be sticking its tongue out, constantly hungry for something. When Harry put the kitten back in its enclosure it hopped away and cuddled up to another kitten. This one a lighter shade of brown but with cerulean eyes like the sea.
“Hey look my kitten is cuddling with a kitten that looks like you Lou” Harry pointed out
Louis turned his gaze towards their supposed kitten doppelgangers and realised Harry was right! The two were a spitting image of them. The two stood in silence for a minute, watching in awe and wonder as the kittens played with each other, cleaned each other and eventually fell asleep on each other.
Louis began resting his head on Harry’s shoulder, although soft it still startled Harry. But he too sunk into the act of affection, the two brown haired boys fitting together like the last two pieces of a puzzle, like the last remaining shards of a broken glass, like tye moon and the stars.
It was at this moment Louis let out a whisper;
“Do you think we find each other in every universe?”
The question startled Harry, it was so out of nowhere, so existential. It took him a minute to find a response.
“I certianly think we try”
But as the words left Harry’s mouth he couldn’t help but feel guilty with their feeling on his tongue.
Were they even meant to be in this one?
