(05) Identical Stranger

HOTCH: Everyone familiar with the father?
REID: Evan Davenport, U.S. Attorney, Executive Assistant, Southern District, New York. Widower. Assigned U.S. Marshals three times in the past 10 years due to death threats.
DEREK: Is the protective detail still current?
HOTCH: Around the clock. But um, Trish declined protection when she turned 18.
DEREK: Too bad for the boyfriend.
REID: But why kill him?
DEREK: But if I wanna kill someone I know I have to take out whoever’s with them.
(SIGHS)
DEREK: Says here she’s got a sister.
HOTCH: Cheryl.
DEREK: Any problems? Were they close?
REID: Yeah. They’re identical twins. You know, birth rate statistics for identical twins have remained stable over the years, despite the overall increase in twins and multiples since the late 1980s. The odds of having identical twins is about 3 in 1,000, whereas the birth rate for all twins is about 33 in 1,000. So, identical twins are more unusual than fraternal twins.
ELLE: Why do you know that?
REID: I… I know a pair of identical twins. And I had a phase…
DEREK: Why does that not surprise me
ELLE: Do you think Cheryl’s a wack job because she thinks, she claims, she can feel her sister’s anxiety?
DEREK: I never said wack job.
REID: Actually there may be a physiological basis for it.
DEREK: Don’t ask.
REID: Reversed asymmetry monozygotic eggs split late. Between nine to 12 days. The DNA matches right down to the very last stranded code. And there's sporadic documentation of shared physiological pain.
DEREK: And you believe it?
REID: I’m saying that I saw it happen a few times. It could have just been just them messing with me tho, but I’m saying that I believe it’s possible. I don’t know everything. I mean, despite the fact that you think that I do.
DEREK: You actually know a pair of identical twins? And also, I never said that. When have I ever said that?
REID: Every day since I've met you.
ELLE: This morning at breakfast.
HOTCH: Yesterday when he beat you at cards. We've got one minute.
DEREK: Anybody ever heard of sarcasm?
“So our Wonderboy knows a pair of twins. You ever heard of that before?” Morgan asked as he slides in between Elle and JJ.
“He doesn’t talk much about friends that he has outside of the bureau. He could know twins, why couldn’t he?” Elle asked while turning to face Morgan.
“He never said anything to me, but then again, whenever we hang out he usually just lets me talk and mentions his mom sometimes.” JJ said as she realised that she doesn’t really know Reid as well as she thought.
“I mean, maybe he’s just trying to make us think he has other, actual, friends? I say he’s just making it all up.” Elle said and walked away while laughing.
“I don’t believe he’s keeping secrets from me. He still didn’t tell me who he called when we were in San Diego. And Hotch told us to write that Garcia managed to track the perp in our reports, what was that all about? I don’t get it. Why is he talking to Hotch and not me when Elle and Gideon said that he has a crush on me .” JJ ranted at Morgan while he just kept thinking about his friend having a secret friend group. As JJ turned around to make herself a new cup of coffee he slowly walked away to Hotch.
“So, Pretty Boy, you gonna tell me about this secret friends that you’ve been hiding from us?” Morgan asked as he sat down next to Reid on their plane ride back. Reid, who was messing around on his phone ‘till now, turned it off and looked up at his friend.
“I’m not really hiding them, it’s just that I don’t see them as often as I would like so I don’t mention them that much either.”, Reid answered as his phone lit up with a new text.
“Yeah? Where’d you meet them? They cool?”
“I met them through a mutual friend, actually, they all went to school together. And I would say that they are cool, although I will deny it if they ever ask. They love playing funny but big scale pranks on their family and friends.” Reid said with a big smile on his face.
“Yeah? You ever fallen victim to one of those pranks? God, I would love to see that.”
“Thankfully just some minor ones. They are too scared of our mutual friend’s retaliation to prank me but it’s always funny to see their faces when they realise that they accidentally pranked me as they know that the revenge will be sweet.”
“Should I even bother asking for more? Or are you still keeping quiet?” Morgan asked kinda hopeful but also knowing that he’ll get nothing about this same as it happened during the last case. At that moment Reid’s phone rings. “Saved by the bell, huh?”
“Sorry, I have to take this.” Spencer said as he got up from his seat and answered the call on his phone.
“Hey, you guys okay? Clint texted me about what happened. I’m sorry.”
“No, no, it’s fine. I’ll be back around midnight I think so you could wait out for me to
get home so we can say goodbye before you disappear, yeah?”
“I’ll be fine, I know you guys have a job that you have to do and that this was
expected to happen. And I’ll have work to distract me from worrying too much.”
“Yeah, yeah. I’ll talk to Hotch, see if he can give me some more consults and I’ll be
good. Just take care of yourself and I’ll see you at home.”
Morgan pretended to be listening to music while looking out of the window as he heard Reid's side of the phone call. He assumed this was that mysterious Z person that they were introduced to a few weeks ago. If that could even be called an introduction. As he was still thinking about Reid’s mysterious friend, as his eyes were closing from the lassitude he felt, he watched Reid sit next to Hotch and start a quiet, but what seemed like a serious conversation.
