Chapter 7
Lily POV
"And anyway,then he found out she was sleeping with his cousin!"
There was gasps from around the room. All of the girls were lounging around in Lily's living room,and Mary was telling them loads of gossip from wherever she could get it. Lily was hanging upside down from her arm chair,Dorcas and Marlene were lying on the floor back to back,head on each others shoulders. Mary was going back and forth from pacing to sprawling across the sofa. At the moment she was pacing. Tiny Juniper had started to follow her,and with every turn Mary made,she had to double back to catch up to her again.
"Did he break up with her?" Asked Dorcas,popping a strawberry into her mouth.
"No! He wanted to try again and she thought it was so pathetic that SHE broke up with him!"
"Oh my god!" Marlene let out a shriek of glee and clapped her hands. Dorcas smiled and Lily slapped her knee,laughing.
"Oh and you know I told you about my sister,not Christie,Mia,and how she was wanting to get out there? After her bad breakup? 2 damn years ago."
"Oh I love hearing about Mia!"
Mary sat back on the sofa,Juniper sat on her feet. "Don't we all? She met this man,Patrick or something,and she was going to sleep with him-"
There was a soft "good for her" from Marlene.
"But she couldn't! When they were taking their clothes off, she realized she had gotten her period and she left without saying anything!"
"Ew!"
"Oh no!"
"Is she okay?"
Mary waved a hand. "Shes fine. It was an early period apparently,so its just like insult to injury."
Marlene groaned. "Ours are due next week." She gestured between herself and Dorcas.
Lily lifted her head up. "Both of you?"
"Yeah."She smiled. "We're synced up!"
"Cool" Lily dropped her head again.
As Mary said that she had just finished hers and the conversation dwindled into a different topic,Lily started to think about her period. It felt like she hadn't gotten it in ages. When had been the last time she came on?
She racked her brain and tried to remember,when a memory came to her of missing an order meeting to sit home with a hot water bottle to soothe her cramps. That had been at the beginning of October! Had she not really had a period in two months?
Suddenly her head was filled with thoughts of cold tile on her knees and waking up in the morning to a nauseous feeling that she could only expel through her esophagus. She had been feeling sick often recently. But it was only ever in the morning.
No. It could only mean one thing. But... she couldn't be. She and James always used protection,and wren couldn't get her pregnant! But what if a condom had snapped? She had heard about it happening multiple times,from Mary's gossip or sob stories on the news.
Her heart was hammering so hard she nearly didn't hear when Mary said that she had to leave for a date. If she wasn't already in inner turmoil,she would have felt a prick to the heart.
She kept her composure as she let Mary out of the flat,as well as Marlene and Dorcas who said that they better get going too.
As soon as the door was shut,she leaned against it and closed her eyes.
'Stop it Lily!' She thought to herself. 'You don't even know if you actually are pregnant. You could be getting yourself worked up for nothing!
With a new resolve and shaking hands,she grabbed her purse and left for the pharmacy. Not the one around the corner from the flat,but one a few streets away,so that no one would recognize her.
When she came to the isle of pregnancy tests,she paused. How do you know what pregnancy test is a good pregnancy test? You're meant to get more that one,Lily knew that. In case there was a false result. She took 2 boxes of them,not the cheapest and not the most expensive.
She didn't look at the cashier when she was paying,but she did buy a Cadburys chocolate bar that was on top of a pile next to the til,just for a shot at normality. She was handed them in a small brown paper bag.
Walking out of the shop,she realized she couldn't do this alone. She walked into an alleyway and apparated to the person she trusted the most.
"Hey. You okay?" Remus asked.
He was sitting on the sofa,a book in one hand and a cup of tea in the other.
Lily sighed and sat down next to him. "Not really. Are Sirius and James here?"
Remus put down what was in his hands,a worried expression on his face. "No,they're on a mission. Regulus is here but we'd be lucky to get him out of his room."
"I might be pregnant!" Lily didn't wait a second after Remus finished talking. It rushed out all at once. She explained about her missed periods (which she was glad to see he didn't get disgusted by) and her supposed morning sickness. She showed him the pregnancy tests she had bought.
"How do these work?" He asked,picking one up and reading the instructions. His eyes widened and he set it back down. "Uh okay. Do you want me to wait with you? For the result to develop?"
Lily nodded.
She then left the room for probably the most anxious piss she had ever had. She decided to do both tests at once,so that she wouldn't have to pee on them again. She came back and they both sat on the table. Lily neatly placed both tests face down in front of her,and the open chocolate bar between them. In the two minutes wait (she counted the two minutes in her head,just to be sure) they ate chocolate in silence.
When she was sure that enough time had passed,she put her hands on the tests,but paused.
The next turn of her wrists could change her entire life. She consciously hadn't thought about James,and continued not to let his face cross her mind.
She took a deep breath and turned the tests over.
"Fuck."
