Chapter 1
James sat at the foot of the library stairs, waiting for Lily to finish studying for her potions exam and walk past him on her way back to the common room. He knew it was pathetic, but he would seem far more like he was playing it cool if she thought they just happened to bump into each other.
“James. What are you doing?” Remus asked, standing directly in front of him and scaring him out of his daydream.
“Oh, y’know Moony. Just hanging around.” James recovered and returned to his nonchalant composure.
“Hm… Hanging around directly outside of the library?” Remus was entirely unconvinced.
“Yes, it’s a very relaxing spot.” James leaned back to rest his arms on the stair behind him and flinched slightly at the cold marble.
Remus scoffed at his friend’s inability to lie: “The library where a certain redheaded girl is currently studying?”
“Oh, is Lily in there? Hadn’t noticed.” James shrugged.
“I’m sure,” Remus said, dryly. “James, this is getting sad.”
James groaned, sitting up and rubbing a hand on his forehead: “I know.” He conceded, “Mind putting in a good word for her leaving soon? I’d like to play chess with Padfoot before lights out.”
“Fine.” Remus caved, unable to hide his amusement at the poor lovesick lad.
