Part Five
Harry has always dreamed of having a family. Growing up with the Dursleys, he wanted to shower his family with love and every beautiful thing in the world. So a week into Draco's and Jamie's stay in Godric's Hollow, he knew he had to do everything in his power to keep his little family together. It helped that Jamie wanted to stay with him a little longer when Draco wanted them to leave. Harry panicked and stood there watching while his two year old cried clutching at his papa's arms begging not to go. Relief washed over him when Draco decided to stay another week.
"Harry, mate, you have to finish your paperwork today or Robards'll have our head" Ron, his Auror partner called. He has been leaving on time since Draco got discharge leaving the paperwork to his partner.
"Sorry, mate, I gotta go," Harry announced, gathering his things and carelessly shoving it in his bag.
"What? You can't. You have to finish this," Ron complained, pushing his papers in his desk.
"I'm a family man now, Ron. I can't work overtime," Harry laughed at Ron's face when he gave him a disgusted look.
"How's Draco?"
"He's been good. Aloof, but good. I kept bringing him expensive things and those posh pastries and chocolates he used to have back in Hogwarts and well, he never complained once. Today, I'm thinking of bringing him those macaroons that are too pretty to eat. I think it would suit Draco well, being posh and all," Harry laughed and waved his wand and all the papers organized themselves in a stack.
"Well, see you mate!" Harry rushed to the floo to get in the cafe on time.
"I'm home!" Harry announced as soon as he's in the threshold of his door.
"Daddy!" Harry heard, as tiny footsteps paddled across the room and a small body collided in his arms when he squat down to catch the child.
"Hey, little man! How was your day?" Jamie only giggled, buryinh his face in Harry's neck.
"He was a menace, that he is," Draco answered. Harry looked up and saw him uncrossing his arms, to help Harry get his coat off.
"How was yours?" Draco asked in that posh voice that sent butterflies in Harry's stomach. Helping Harry get his coat off was one of the things that Draco has been doing since a week ago. Aside from asking how his day went, Draco would sometimes talk about the things Jamie did throughout the day.
"It was fine. Left Ron in the office to take care of the paperwork," Harry answered as they walk towards the kitchen. Draco chuckled as he set the plates for their dinner.
This is what Harry has always dreamed of. His family eating dinner together, laughing and talking about their days.
"Oh, I brought something for you," Harry said and saw a flash of emotion in Draco's face, too quick for him to decipher, before schooling his face and giving him a smile in what Harry wanted to call a business smile. A little bit of wandless magic and the box of macaroons came straight to the kitchen. Harry handed the box to Draco who visibly swallowed.
"Oh, thank you, Harry. You didn't have to," Draco said touching the box with such a sad expression.
"D-did you not like macaroons?" Harry asked, feeling lost at Draco's reaction.
"No, no. These are my favorite. You, you used to bring these to me saying that it caught your attention saying that it suited me, being posh and all," Draco laughed, probably reminiscing memories Harry doesn't have.
"Oh."
"Yeah, anyway, enough about me. Jamie has been..."
For the first time, Harry tuned out the story Draco was telling about Jamie. Is Draco still missing Harry, the one with his memories? Has Harry been unconsciously doing the things he was doing before?
"Daddy, no! You can't put the potato when it's not boiling," Draco heard Jamie chastise his father in the kitchen. He moved towards the kitchen to see what the two were doing. Draco saw Harry balancing Jamie in his hips while the said child kept poking on the ingredients.
"Is that so? But it's almost boiling so it's fine," Harry said, winking at Jamie who giggled at his antics.
It's been a month since Draco was discharge from the hospital and he just stayed in Godric's Hollow for now. He's fully recovered and was able to do advance magic spells. After the first week, he wanted to leave, but Jamie kept on crying saying he wanted to stay with Harry and become a family, so Draco stayed for another week. Two weeks passed, Harry was the one who begged Draco to stay, saying he needed to bond more with his son after two years of being separated. Draco relented, feeling guilty. Now, Draco just stayed, how could he separate Jamie from his father when he was so fond of him? But he knew, he needed to leave. Harry has been tolerating his presence far to long now and he can't stay here. Draco still loves Harry, he never really stopped and getting used in seeing Harry and Jamie together, Harry coming home from work, greeting the two of them like it was normal, Harry bringing him gifts, and doing things he used to do before he lost his memories, he couldn't bear it. He won't. Draco would break. Harry might like to have Jamie around him but not Draco. Who wouldn't even like Jamie? He was such a sweet boy.
Draco left the kitchen and went to his room, the master's bedroom where he shared with Jamie. Harry stayed on the guest room he was in, the first time he came back from the accident. Draco started packing his things, leaving Jamie's things, when he heard the door creaked open.
"Draco, what are you doing?" Harry asked from the doorway.
"I'm packing my things, I already booked my portkey back to France," Draco said like discussing the weather.
"What? What about Jamie? Are you going to take him?" Harry asked and Draco was right, but he didn't want to be. He swallowed a non-existent lump, trying to clear his voice.
"No, I'm not taking Jamie."
Draco conitnued packing his things, not minding the wrinkles his clothes would have when he just shoved all his clothes in a bag. He could just use magic to fix them.
"I told you I'm not going to take him away from you," Harry said, hurt visible in his voice.
Finally, Draco looked at Harry, "I know, Harry. I was just thinking, maybe we could arrange Jamie's visits? For now, I have to go back to France and see what I have left."
"But why? I thought we are having a great time here. Jamie's here, why would you leave?" Harry questioned, clearly not understanding Draco's perspective.
"Because I can't play family with you! I can't get used to you cooking breakfast for us, giving me little trinkets and gifts, leaving work and coming back, asking about my day like it's normal! I don't want to get use to those things and seeing you be so good with Jamie, I just, I can't stay here and wait for you to get tired of me and then look for people you would rather be with! I can't stand the fact that Jamie would meet another person with you and ask questions! Why don't you get that? I won't do it, Harry!" Draco panted, turning from Harry because he felt tears burning in his eyes. He took a deep breathe and gathered his things.
"Let's talk about Jamie's arrangement when I get back," Draco said, wanting to leave as soon as possible.
"No."
"What?"
"I said no, Draco. You aren't leaving. What do you mean playing family? You are my family," Harry declared making Draco scoffed. Harry took two large strides and he was cupping Draco's face, forcing Draco to look at him.
"You are. You and Jamie. You're my family."
Draco pushed Harry's hand away and took a step back, "Stop it."
"No, Draco, you listen to me, there's no one else. Granted, I tried dating people after you left two years ago, but Merlin, you were always on my mind. I thought about what could've been if I just gave us a chance two years ago, if I wasn't such a bigoted arsehole. I asked Pansy about you, wanting to apologise, but she told me you've already move on and what could I do? I did not want to ruin your life by suddenly bursting in. But then, you were dying and we have a son. We have a son, Draco! This past month has been a dream to me. I've been looking forward to going home because I know I will be seeing my two most important boys in my life," Harry knelt in front of him, clutching at his hands.
"And I'm so sorry. I haven't apologise enough for all the things I've done and said to you after I've lost my memories. I did not try hard enough to regain them. I'm so sorry I've lost my memories. I should've been more careful. I should've done better. Please let me make it better."
It broke Draco's heart, hearing his beloved begged for his forgiveness. He knelt down and held Harry's face in his hands.
"We don't work, Harry. We already tried and look at where it got us. We have Jamie to think about. We can't make things complicated, as it is."
"But we do! We do work, Draco and you know it. And we didn't try, you did. I did not put any effort to try with you so let me try, now. I will try. You don't have to do anything. I love you, please, let me try again," Harry pleaded.
There were a lot of things running on Draco's head. He thought about all the things that would happen if he agreed, both positive and negative, but he also thought about the things that would happen if he didn't. He looked at Harry and knew that he was beyond saving. For a Slytherin, he really did not know how to self-preserve.
"Okay, we'll try again.
1 year later...
"I'm so sorry, Harry. I just can't stand it. I know I said I wanted this, but now I don't. I-I'm sorry," Draco apologised, trying to hold back the tears pooling in his eyes. He took a breathe to calm himself, but a sob came out instead, and just like that, the dam just broke. His tears kept spilling and running down his face, and Draco tried. He really tried not to cry.
"I'm so sorry, Harry."
"Draco, love, please stop crying. It's alright, I understand completely." Harry hugged the crying Draco, drawing soothing circles on his back for comfort. Draco clutched at Harry like his life depended on it.
"Shhhh, my love. It's alright. I can just eat it if you don't want to. Or Jamie. You know how he loves this lobster with cheese." Harry comforted, running his hands up and down Draco's back.
"But it's two am and I was crying because I wanted one and now I'm crying because I don't. It's just that it smelled really awful," Draco said making vomiting voices in Harry's neck so Harry pushed the offending food away from Draco and levitated it to the farthest table in their bedroom. Harry really wanted to laugh but he knew couldn't. It wasn't just the time.
"My love, it's alright. If you want me to wake up at ungodly hours to fetch you food you won't eat, I'll still do it. I love you and I love that I am now experiencing what I missed out on Jamie's pregnancy. Besides, I just wake up and sleep but you're carrying our baby who craves weird food," Harry said pushing Draco a little but not letting go, looking at his red-rimmed eyes. Harry stroked Draco's cheeks, drying his tears and kissed his forehead, earning another sob from Draco.
"I don't deserve you. Why do you even love me? I love you so much." At that, Harry chuckled, hugging the blonde again and pulling him in the bed, so now they were lying face fo face.
"I love you too, so much, darling. I love our family and now we're having another addition. Thank you for making my dreams come true. You are the best thing that's ever happened to me. You and Jamie and now our little bean. You make me so happy sometimes, I think I don't deserve you." Harry confessed, stroking Draco's hair. He knew it made Draco fall asleep, now more than ever, ever since he got pregnant. Draco looked at him and was about to say something when Harry shushed him but pecking on his lips.
"Sleep now, my love. You need all the rest you can get."
Draco nodded and buried his face in Harry's neck, seeking warmth.
Tomorrow is Draco's due date and they were scheduled to go to St. Mungos, starting tomorrow to monitor him.
6 months after they started to try again, Harry proposed to Draco which he accepted, saying even after they got married, they would still do their best to keep their little family together. Jamie became the ring bearer after insisting that he was the one who brought his parents together so he had the right. Coming from a two year old, Draco only laughed and Harry was left stunned at how his son talked. Ron commented that a child of Draco would definitely be posh and talk like an aristocrat when they told the story. Harry wanted to hypenate his and Draco's surname, but Draco turned down, saying that the Malfoys had long history to think about, but now it was time for the Potters to rise again. It made Harry tear up and insisted on changing Jamie's name the same day they were registering their marriage. When Cassiopeia Lily Potter was born, all dark wavy hair, but with Draco's eyes, Harry fainted at the sight. Ron and all their friends along with Jamie laughed when they transferred Harry to the same room Draco was staying in.
When Harry woke up, the memories he lost all came back to him. He knelt in front of an exhausted Draco, carrying little Cassie in his arms, crying, apologizing and asking for Draco's forgiveness.
"You remember me?" Draco asked, not really sure if he was dreaming.
"Oh, my love. I'm so sorry, I'm late. I'm here now. I won't leave ever again. You know I think, I should quit the Aurors." Harry suddenly announced in the group.
"Mate, don't make rush decisions. You're headed to being the youngest Head Auror in the century," Ron said trying to calm Harry down.
"No, I was actually thinking about this ever since Draco said he was pregnant. I can't risk my life, knowing my family waits for me and I can't take the long trips anymore," Harry said looking at Draco. He moved forward and held Draco's hand.
"I asked Minnie about it and she offered me a position for the Defense Against the Dark Arts position. I think I would take it after a year or so, but not right now, and Draco, I know you've been getting letters asking you to go back to St. Mungos and I think you should accept it. I would stay with Cassie for the mean time and you can continue your career."
"You've really though this through, huh?" Draco smirked at him, still looking tired but undeniably happy.
"Yes, of couse, love. I want to spend time with you and our children. I'll be the one waiting for you to come home now."
Draco smiled at him and thought how could he be this lucky. He's got two beautiful children who he knew would be so love with all their friends around them and he's got the best husband anyone could ask for. The sweet, loving, awkward, devoted husband and if someone asks Draco, he would say that it was like a miracle, bringing Cassie to the world and getting him back, Draco's Harry.
-The End-
