Looking into the Riddle family past

Y/n's pov Hermione and I walked down the stairs to the Gryffindor common room where Draco, Ron, and, my brother were... I sat on Draco's lap as Hermione sit down on the couch between Harry and Ron... Did you find anything out? Harry asked... Yes... I wrote in that diary... Or the horcrux. I said folding my hands together... Horcrux what? Harry said confused... Why do you think we could sense evil from it, Harry? I swear you are such an idiot sometimes... Heck I'm surprised you are even passing this year's classes. I sighed pinching my nose... Be nice... Draco whispered pinching my side... I yelped in shock... Draco Anastasia Black!!!!!!!!! I yelled at him... I hit his chest softly... Oh... You hit him softly... But I get your hard hits. That's not fair! Harry said. Shut the heck up, Harry! I yelled... Whatever... It's late... We should all go to bed... I said... Fine... Harry said... I roll my eyes... Harry follows me and Draco up the stairs to the Soul-bond room... I opened the door to find Ginny sleeping... Harry went to get undressed... Draco and I got undressed and crawled into bed and fell asleep...

Next morning

After breakfast Hermione and I were ready to go to the library... I kissed Draco's cheek... See you later, love... I said... Ahem... Harry and Ron cleaned their throats... See you two later... I said rolling my eyes and walking away with Hermione... They are lucky I don't snog, Draco in front of them... Harry should be lucky I don't do that! I complained... She giggles... So... I said looking at her with a smirk... Hermione may think I don't know the looks she gives Ron... But I know my best friend very well... She is growing feelings for Ron... So what? Hermione asked... Is there something you want to tell me? I smirked... What do you mean? Hermione asked... Mione, come on... I noticed the way you looked at Ron! I giggled at her flustered face... Y/n stop it! Hermione blushes... Ah! You can't admit it! You like Ron! I giggled... Hermione blushes... Y/n! She said... I laughed... Come on... We should get going... I said... She nods...

Hermione and I got a lot of books about Gaunt family... I was reading a book and saw another one on the table... I grabbed it... It said Riddle family... I wonder... I thought... Love? Draco thought... I wonder about this book, Dray... I thought... I can tell... You are very interested in it. Draco thought... I nodded... Hermione... I said... She looks over... I motioned to the book I'm about to read... She nods waiting... You two are so alike... I'm starting to wonder if Hermione isn't your secret sister not by blood... Draco thought chuckling... Shut it! I thought blushing. Continue reading it, love... I want to hear it as well... Draco thought... I nodded. I started to read the book. The Riddle family was a singularly unpleasant, upper class family who fifty years ago lived in the village of Little Hangleton in a large manor house (‘Riddle House’) on a hill, overlooking a graveyard and a church. I read... But I froze at what I saw next... Y/n? Hermione asked... Love what is it? Draco thought... Tom Marvolo Riddle/Lord Voldemort: Born of a witch mother (Merope Gaunt) and a Muggle father (Tom Riddle, Sr.) on December 31, 1926. His mother had fallen in love with his father, who was a Muggle, and tricked him into marrying her with a love potion. While she was pregnant with Tom Jr. she allowed the love potion to wear off and he abandoned her and moved back into the Riddle house with his parents. Merope died giving birth to her son so Tom Jr. was raised in a Muggle orphanage. I stuttered out reading... Love potion?! Hermione said horrified. I felt sick to my stomach... I would never... I would never do something like that to you! I love you, Dray! That is just... Just... sicking! I thought pale... I know, love... I know... I know you love me... Clam down... Y/n... You need to breathe... You're going to pass out if you don't relax! Draco thought... I nodded a deep breath.

Tom grew up to be a very powerful wizard. He excelled at Hogwarts, winning awards for service to the school and magical merit. He was even head boy in his seventh year, but he was already dabbling in the Dark Arts while still at school. Some of his closest friends in Slytherin were already calling him Voldemort, a name Riddle had chosen by rearranging the his given name into “I am Lord Voldemort.” I read... Wait a minute... You mean Tom Riddle became you know who after leaving Hogwarts? Hermione said horrified... It looks like it... I said... I kept reading... After leaving Hogwarts, Riddle began working at Borgin and Burke’s in Knockturn Alley. His job was to ferret out items of value and obtain them at the lowest price possible. He disappeared one day (after murdering Hepzibah Smith), and when he returned he was known only as ‘Lord Voldemort.’ Few people except perhaps for Dumbledore and his early followers remembered the Dark Lord’s origins. Keep reading, Y/n... Hermione said... Tom Riddle, Sr., father to Tom Marvolo Riddle An “anti-magic, rich, snobbish & rude” person who abandoned his pregnant wife and unborn son when she revealed that she was a witch Tom Riddle, Jr. got his revenge when he killed his father along with his paternal grandparents c.1945, and used his father’s death to create his first Horcrux, the Peverell Ring (BLC). Later, some of Tom Riddle Sr.’s bone was removed from his grave (“bone of the father, unknowingly given”) to add to the potion that allowed Voldemort to regain his full powers.

That's the end of that chapter... I said... My mind still blown away. Hermione looks through the chapters... Y/n... Read this one... Hermione said... And then on the summer outing — we take them out, you know, once a year, to the countryside or to the seaside — well, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop were never quite right afterwards, and all we ever got out of them was that they'd gone into a cave with Tom Riddle. He swore they'd just gone exploring, but something happened in there, I'm sure of it." I read... Wait... That's... I said... Read it! Hermione said. -- Mrs. Cole, speaking in Dumbledore's memory. What? How is Dumbledore's memory in this book? I said... That's what I like to know... Hermione said with her arms crossed... Read again... There's still more... Hermione said. On a summer visit to the seashore with the children from the orphanage, Tom Riddle coerces two of the other kids, Amy Benson and Dennis Bishop, to go with him into a cave. The two other children, according to Mrs. Cole, were never the same after. Tom said only that they’d gone exploring. Tom Riddle was three years old at the beginning of the 1930s, so it's safe to assume his terrorizing of two children on a trip to the seashore didn't happen before then. He left for Hogwarts in 1938, so the incident with the sea cave would have occurred between about 1935 and 1938, most likely in the summer of 1937 when he was ten. I read... Y/n! Read that chapter! Hermione gasps... I looked at it and gasped in shock...

--Tom Marvolo Riddle. August, 1938: After charming the skeptical matron with magic, manners, and gin, Dumbledore meets Riddle in his room and reveals that the boy is a wizard and invites him to Hogwarts. I read... Why did Dumbledore invite the darkest wizard to Hogwarts? Hermione asked... Maybe because he didn't trust him and wanted to keep an eye on him... Or he felt pity for him... Or just maybe... He didn't want Tom to hurt the children... I said... Tom Riddle proves himself to be a bossy, hostile, independent, and calculating child who terrifies and torments the other orphans. At first, he guesses that Mrs. Cole has brought Dumbledore to lock him away in a psychiatric institution, but once he believes that Dumbledore is from a school for wizards, he is delighted with this explanation of his unusual abilities. Dumbledore uses magic to engulf Tom’s wardrobe in harmless flames, and prompts the boy to take out his stash of stolen trinkets. Making it clear that authority and discipline are to be taken seriously at Hogwarts, Dumbledore tells Tom that he must returns the objects to their owners (and that Dumbledore will be able to tell whether or not he does so). After Dumbledore has provided all the information Tom needs in order to get all his school supplies and get to Hogwarts, Tom reveals that he can speak to snakes. I read... Harry and I can talk to snakes... I said nervously... You and Harry are nothing like Tom Riddle, Y/n Lillian Evens James Potter! Do you understand me?! Hermione said sternly... I nodded.

Y/n read this one... Hermione said... Merope Gaunt arrives at the orphanage in the evening, destitute and near death. She had no will to live and has forsworn magic after being abandoned by her Muggle husband, Tom Riddle, whom she had tricked into wedlock with a love potion. Shortly after arriving, she gives birth to a boy and lives only long enough to name him Tom Marvolo Riddle. I read... Well... I do feel a little bad for her... But still Hermione said... Hermione... Look at this... This one is when he starts at Hogwarts... I said... He charms all his teachers with the exception of Albus Dumbledore, the Transfiguration teacher, who is uneasy about him. This is based on Riddle's birthday of New Year's Eve, 1926. I read... Hermione I got a bad feeling about this... Like if we continue reading his familiars past and his past... I know... But we can't stop... Hermione said... I nodded... y-Y/n... Read the next one... Hermione said shocked... I looked at it and gasped... but I admit, even I was surprised how well the plan worked. I thought someone must realize that Hagrid couldn't possibly be the Heir of Slytherin. It had taken me five whole years to find out everything I could about the Chamber of Secrets and discover the secret entrance ... as though Hagrid had the brains, or the power! -- Tom Marvolo Riddle. He is in his first year at Hogwarts when he learns about the existence of the Chamber. He is determined to find it but doesn’t succeed until five years later, in June of 1943. I read... Oh my god! Hermione said... My eyes widened in horror... I started to read it... Meanwhile, in the village of Little Hangleton, a maid was running along the High Street, screaming that there were three bodies lying in the drawing room of the big house: Tom Riddle Senior and his mother and father ... The Ministry ... knew at once that this was a wizard's murder. They also knew that a convicted Muggle-hater lived across the valley from the Riddle house, a Muggle-hater who had already been imprisoned once for attacking one of the murdered people." -- Albus Dumbledore. He first visits his uncle, Morfin Gaunt, and uses magic to steal Marvolo’s ring and frame Morfin for the murders of the Muggles in the Riddle house. Tom uses the murders to create his first Horcrux, the ring. The next day, Morfin is taken to Azkaban, where he remains until his death. I read... Hermione was shaking not in fear but in horror... We should stop... But we're in way to deep to stop now...

Okay... I will read this one... So be ready, Hermione... I warned... Got it... She said... "So the Ministry called upon Morfin. They did not need to question him, to use Veritaserum or Legilimency. He admitted to the murder on the spot, giving details only the murderer could know. He was proud, he said, to have killed the Muggles, had been awaiting his chance all these years. He handed over his wand, which was proved at once to have been used to kill the Riddles. And he permitted himself to be led off to Azkaban without a fight." -- Dumbledore. Tom Riddle Jr. came looking for his maternal family in Little Hangleton and discovered a disheveled Morfin in the filthy Gaunt hovel. He learned of the history of his mother and father, then Stupefied Morfin. He went across to the Riddle house, murdered his father and grandparents with Morfin’s wand, then returned to the Gaunt house. There he placed a Memory Modification charm on Morfin so that when Ministry officials arrived, Morfin proudly boasted of killing the Muggles. Morfin’s wand proved to be the murder weapon and he was carted off to Azkaban. The murders are said to have happened in the summer of Tom Riddle's sixteenth year.

"All he had to go upon was the single name 'Marvolo,' which he knew from those who ran the orphanage had been his mother's father's name. Finally, after painstaking research, through old books of Wizarding families, he discovered the existence of Slytherin's surviving line. In the summer of his sixteenth year, he left the orphanage to which he returned annually and set off to find his Gaunt relatives." His sixteenth year, which would be the year he turned 16, was 1942. We're guessing that he committed the murders in July, since summer break would be July and August. Why July? Because it doesn't seem like he would dawdle for a few weeks before tracking down his family -- he would be eager to learn more about them. Having the murders occur earlier in the summer would also give him plenty of time to perform whatever horrible rituals and spells are required for that murder to generate a Horcrux. I read... Hermione was silent... Hermione... I said... Go, Y/n... We can't stop now... Hermione said. I nodded...

Y/n... Hermione said horrified... I gasped... He had first heard about the Chamber of Secrets five years before and had spent that time working out there it could be located and how to enter it. When he finally does open it, he uses Parseltongue to control and release the Basilisk within. A Hogwarts student, Myrtle Warren, is killed by the monster shortly thereafter in June. but I admit, even I was surprised how well the plan worked. I thought someone must realize that Hagrid couldn't possibly be the Heir of Slytherin. It had taken me five whole years to find out everything I could about the Chamber of Secrets and discover the secret entrance ... as though Hagrid had the brains, or the power! Since he opened the Chamber in 1943, he must have first come up with the idea in 1938, when he was in his second year.Myrtle was killed in June, but we don't know how much time had passed between Riddle's first foray into the Chamber and that death. It's likely that the events were not concurrent, as Riddle would likely have entered the Chamber several times to explore and to discover and learn to control the Basilisk before the incident with Myrtle. For the purposes of this timeline we'll assign a date of May 1943 for the initial opening to allow for a few weeks between that and the murder. However the dates could be closer together (both in June) or the initial opening of the Chamber could be even earlier, although this seems less likely. I read... Hermione gasps...

Ooooh, it was dreadful! It happened right in here. I died in this very stall. I remember it so well ..."
-- Myrtle Warren. Myrtle Warren is being teased by Olive Hornby and flees into a second floor bathroom to sulk. She hears a male voice — that of Tom Riddle opening the Chamber of Secrets — and steps out to tell him off for being in the girls’ bathroom. Instead she comes face to face with the Basilisk and dies. Her death almost results in the closing of the school. He is so accused because Tom Riddle catches him raising an Acromantula in the castle. I read... That's a lie! That has to be a lie! Hagrid would never do anything like that! Hermione said... Mione... Clam down... I said softly... She nods... I kept reading... Believing Hagrid innocent, Dumbledore convinces Headmaster Dippet to let the boy stay. Dumbledore may have also had something to do with placing Hagrid's broken wand inside his pink umbrella. I read... Good old Dumbledore... He would believe Hagrid is innocent. Hermione said... I kept my thought to myself... When Draco and I told Dumbledore what happened between us and when he explained about our soul-bound. I swear I saw a look of annoyment... Like it was stopping a plan or something... But I won't tell Hermione until I can figure out what his deal is... What I saw next made my jaw drop... Only the Transfiguration teacher, Dumbledore, seemed to think Hagrid was innocent. He persuaded Dippet to keep Hagrid and train him as gamekeeper. Yes, I think Dumbledore might have guessed ... Dumbledore never seemed to like me as much as the other teachers did ... he certainly kept an annoyingly close watch on me after Hagrid was expelled." -- Tom Riddle. Hagrid is expelled after being accused of opening the Chamber of Secrets and releasing a monster who killed Myrtle Warren. He was framed for this by Tom Riddle, who saw Hagrid as an easy target for persecution, being oversized and clumsy and unusually fond of dangerous creatures. Tom confronted Hagrid, who was taking care of a baby acromantula in the dungeons, and publicly accused him of opening the Chamber. Hagrid was expelled without further proof on the power of Riddle’s persuasion and favored status with the Headmaster at the time, Armando Dippet. Only Dumbledore suspected Riddle of duplicity but couldn’t prove it. I read. Hermione gasps in shock... What kind of person is, Riddle? Hermione asked... A real piece of work is what. I said and kept reading.

He receives it for helping “catch” Hagrid and accusing him (falsely) of opening the Chamber of Secrets. "I knew it wouldn't be safe to open the Chamber again while I was still at school. But I wasn't going to waste those long years I'd spent searching for it. I decided to leave behind a diary, preserving my sixteen-year-old self in its pages, so that one day, with luck, I would be able to lead another in my footsteps, and finish Salazar Slytherin's noble work."-- Tom Riddle. He uses murder of Myrtle in June (BLC) and the knowledge he gained from Slughorn to work the Dark Magic required to turn the diary into a Horcrux. Tom says that he placed his "sixteen-year-old self" into the diary must have done it at some point during 1943 (he turned 16 on December 31, 1942, and turned 17 on December 31, 1943. Myrtle's murder was in June of that year. ] The conversation with Slughorn about creating multiple Horcruxes took place after the summer of 1942, which is when he murdered his father and grandparents and had created one Horcrux already -- the ring he was casually wearing while talking with Slughorn. I read... Oh my god... Hermione said... I nodded... I couldn't stop reading... We were so deep in to give up now...

He is dabbling in the Dark Arts, having already created a Horcrux, and some of his closest friends are already referring to him as Lord Voldemort; outwardly, however, he is a model student. I had . . . no idea. . . . He was . . . flattering. He seemed to . . . to understand . . . to sympathize . . . ”
-- The Grey Lady. Tom Riddle, using his considerable charisma and charm, convinces the ghost of Ravenclaw House, Helena Ravenclaw, to reveal the secret hiding place of her mother’s long-lost diadem. had traveled to that far-flung forest and retrieved the diadem from its hiding place, perhaps as soon as he left Hogwarts, before he even started work at Borgin and Burkes ... But the diadem, once it became his precious Horcrux, had not been left in that lowly tree ... No, the diadem had been returned secretly to its true home, and Voldemort must have put it there the night he asked for a job! He hid the diadem in the castle, the night he asked Dumbledore to let him teach! He must’ve hidden the diadem on his way up to, or down from, Dumbledore’s office!" If this is true, then Riddle charmed the Grey Lady at some point during his time at Hogwarts but after he learned about Horcruxes, therefore between the summer of 1942 and the summer of 1945. He likely didn't turn the diadem into a Horcrux until decades later, shortly before visiting Hogwarts on the pretense of asking for a teaching position and hiding it in the Room of Requirement. This didn't happen until the late 1960s.If this is true, then Riddle charmed the Grey Lady at some point during his time at Hogwarts but after he learned about Horcruxes, therefore between the summer of 1942 and the summer of 1945. He likely didn't turn the diadem into a Horcrux until decades later, shortly before visiting Hogwarts on the pretense of asking for a teaching position and hiding it in the Room of Requirement. This didn't happen until the late 1960s. The Room of Requirement is located on the seventh floor of Hogwarts castle. However, according to book four, the entrance to Dumbledore's office is very likely on the second floor. I read... My eyes blinked...

Headmaster Armando Dippet turns him down, saying that at eighteen he is too young. He then goes to work for Borgin and Burkes instead. We don't know when this happened exactly, except that it was almost certainly within a few weeks of the end of school. Riddle gets the job at Borgin and Burkes "the next thing the staff knew," according to Dumbledore. After doing so, he steals Slytherin’s locket and Hufflepuff’s cup – items he later uses to make Horcruxes. The death of Smith happened ten years before Tom Riddle, now as Lord Voldemort, came back to Hogwarts supposedly to ask Dumbledore for a teaching post. Because Dumbledore became Headmaster some time after 1965 and before 1970, we place the murders in approximately 1956. The actual date could be a year or two later than that, but not before. "...ten years during which we can only guess at what Lord Voldemort was doing…" After the death of Hepzibah Smith, Riddle vanishes for ten years. He travels far and wide, sinking deeply into the Dark Arts, consorting with the very worst of wizard-kind. He undergoes so many dangerous, magical transformations that when he resurfaces years later as Lord Voldemort, he is barely recognizable. Tom Riddle came to Hogwarts ten years after the murder of Hepzibah Smith, supposedly to ask for a teaching post. Since Dumbledore became Headmaster sometime after 1965 and before 1970, Riddle's visit would have been during those years. The murder, then, took place in the mid-1950s and Riddle, who left school in 1945, worked for Borgin and Burkes for around ten years. Oh my god... He is so evil, Y/n... Hermione said... I know, Hermione... We're almost done... I said and kept reading...

At this meeting, Voldemort’s appearance has changed:

[H]e was no longer handsome Tom Riddle. It was as though his features had been burned and blurred; they were waxy and oddly distorted, and the whites of the eyes now had a permanently bloody look, though the pupils were not yet the slits that Dumbledore knew they would become. He was wearing a long black cloak, and his face was as pale as the snow glistening on his shoulders (HBP20). Tom Riddle worked for Borgin and Burkes for over ten years, at the end of which he murdered Hepzibah Smith, framed her house-elf for the murder, and stole Hufflepuff's cup and Slytherin's locket. Dumbledore describes what followed thus: "Ten years separates Hokey’s memory and this one, ten years during which we can only guess at what Lord Voldemort was doing. . . ." (HBP20) After those ten years pass, Voldemort comes to visit Dumbledore and ask about taking up a teaching post as cover for hiding the diadem Horcrux at the school. Since it is ten years after Smith's death, it takes place around 1966 or 1967. With his band of Death Eaters, Voldemort’s first reign of terror begins. His ascent to power is marked by strange disappearances. This comes from Dumbledore's statement in PS1 that "we've had precious little to celebrate for eleven years." At that time it is November, 1981. Though we don't know exactly how Voldemort's ascent to power happened, it is probably safe to assume that it somehow took a big leap in 1970. I read... Hermione's eyes widened in shock.  My own eyes widened and I felt tears welling in my eyes... I know my parents were only in a coma... But still... Those aminals died... I though shaking... Hermione rubs my back soonthingly... She and Ron know of course... They were there... I have to read this, Hermione... My voice was shaky. She nods softly...

Voldemort attempts to kill Harry and Y/n Potter after murdering their parents, but the spell rebounds onto Voldemort. Harry and Y/n are left alive with a scar on his forehead that hides an accidental Horcrux made of Voldemort’s shattered soul. I stopped reading... Oh my god! I shrieked... Both Harry and I have... A... A... Peice of Voldemoer's shattered soul in us! The scar on my left shoulder... Y/n... You need to keep reading... Hermione said... I nodded... Voldemort, nearly dead and without physical form, retreats into the forests of Albania where he possess the bodies of various animals to survive for the next decade, waiting. Hagrid, on Dumbledore’s orders, goes to Godric’s Hollow to rescue babies Harry and Y/n from the ruins of the house. I closed the door... Hermione... We learned everything... You're right... But I will be coming back tomorrow to find out more... Hermione said... I'll come with... No... Hermione cut me off... You need to rest after that last one... I will figure this out by myself... You need your stregnth... Hermione said... I nodded... And by the looks of it... You're beat... Hermione said... She's right... I'm drained... Dray... Can you come to the library and get me? I don't think I can even walk. I thought... I was already on my way when seeing everything in your mind... I also told Ron and Harry... Draco thought... Okay... I thought and closed my eyes. I guess I dozed off, because I felt strong arms around me... Dray? I muttered... Come on, love... Let's get you back to the common room. Draco said softly... Hmm... I buried my face into his chest... I fell asleep as he was carrying me out of the library... All of that drained me...
