1st September 1971 - Journey to Hogwarts

1st September 1971

“Come on, Remus, keep up. We’re already late.” Lyall was saying, speed-walking in front of his son.

The two were walking, or rather, running, across Kings Cross Station, bags in hand. It was 10:55am, and they only had five minutes until the Hogwarts Express left.

“My foot is still sore from the last moon!” Remus tried to redeem himself. It wasn’t a lie. The last full moon the wolf was particularly angry, and decided it just didn’t need it’s foot anymore. In the morning, Remus woke up with a broken foot, and a lot of new scars.

Lyall gave his son a look of disbelief mixed with a lot of annoyment. Remus wished his mother was there. She would’ve been more sympathetic. She would’ve cared.

Lyall decided it would be best for Hope to stay home. She didn’t need the extra stress, and anyway, she couldn’t go into platform 9 ¾. Remus and Hope said their goodbyes on their front step, and that was that.

Finally, Lyall stopped in front of a wall separating platform 9 and platform 10. Remus wanted nothing more than to get away from this hustle and bustle of the muggles trying to go about their daily business.

“Is this it?” Remus asked, slightly disappointed. If he was being honest, he expected something more magical. Platform 9 ¾ sounded more extravagant than just some wall. He was told before that the platform was disguised so muggles couldn’t see it, but still, Remus expected more.

“Yes. Now, come on, I’ll get the trolley and you hang onto your trunk.” Lyall ordered. Remus nodded, and held his trunk tighter. “On the count of three, we run. Straight at the wall. No hesitation. Alright?”

Remus nodded again, this time with more confidence, and his father started counting. By the time he got to three, Remus’ body was acting on autopilot. He ran with full speed straight at the separating wall, and felt a weird sensation for a split second when he was inside the wall. Then the feeling ended, and Remus found himself standing right in front of the Hogwarts Express.

The Hogwarts Express was nothing like the trains Remus had seen before. It was a magnificent scarlet steam engine, with polished brass and a distinctive whistle, signalling one minute until departure. The train cars were painted in a deep red colour, and had gold lettering spelling out “Hogwarts Express” on the sides.

Remus’ jaw was wide open, staring at the huge train in front of him, but Lyall stepped right into action. He dragged the two of them onto the train and lugged Remus’ trunk into the nearest free compartment.

Remus followed him in while carrying his satchel. It was so worn there were multiple patches of different materials similar in colour to the brown material of the bag, but not truly replicating it. So Remus was left with a bag covered in random patches because he couldn’t afford a new one. He did appreciate Hope’s attempts at making it look as normal as possible, though.

“Cheers, dad.” Remus smiled. Lyall nodded in return.

The Hogwarts Express whistled one more time, and Lyall took that as his cue to leave.

They both walked out of the compartment together to say goodbye before Lyall had to get off the train.

“Alright. This is it. Be good, yeah? Oh, and don’t forget Remus, you need to head to the hospital wing as soon as the Feast ends, to meet with the matron, she’ll tell you everything you need to know for the full moon coming up.” Remus’ father told him. The full moon was only in four and a half days and Remus was starting to feel the effects: irritableness, stiffness in his joints and heightened senses. Walking through the train station had been extremely overwhelming for him.

“Yeah, I remember. See you, dad.” Remus obeyed. Lyall’s hands twitched in what seemed like a pre-hug motion, but it looked like Lyall decided otherwise. The father and son just nodded at each other, and both seemed satisfied with that form of goodbye.

“I'll see you at Christmas.” Was the last thing his father said to him before he got off the train just in time.

The conductors’ blowing whistles slammed the doors to the train shut and Remus, years later, would vaguely remember being conflicted with whether or not he saw his father wiping a tear out of his eye as he waved goodbye.

The train set off, and Remus went back to his compartment to find another boy sitting there. He had jet black hair reaching just past his ears, an aristocratic type of face, pale skin and blue eyes so light they could almost be grey.

The boy was also wearing clearly expensive robes. So he was rich , it seemed.

Annoyance quickly washed over Remus. Who just comes into an obviously occupied compartment without even asking first? Apparently whoever this prick was did. All Remus had wanted was a peaceful, empty compartment to read and this boy ruined it.

But Remus also wanted friends, and by the looks of it, this boy was also a first year.

The boy seemed to notice Remus standing in the doorway and waved at him.

“Hello.” He smiled. He had a fancy, well-trained accent. Compared to Remus, he seemed like royalty.

“Hiya.” Remus responded, still staring at him from across the doorway.

“Sorry, was this your compartment?” The boy asked, gesturing to the seats around him.

“Yeah. Was.” Remus said. He accepted defeat, and sat down on the seat across from the boy. He opened his book, and started reading, completely ignoring the potential friend in front of him.

“What’s your name?” The boy asked him.

Remus looked up from his book with a death stare. Who in their right mind disturbs someone who’s reading? Doesn’t he know the rules?

“Remus.” He responded, trying his very hardest to sound cold and stiff, like his father did.

“Oh, cool. My name is Sirius. I like your scars.” Apparently this boy could not pick up on basic social clues.

Remus wanted nothing more than to punch this “Sirius” lad in the face. Although Remus was wearing a sweater and trousers, some of his scars still peeked through the top of his sweater on his neck and on his hands. So he could understand why Sirius would point them out. Still rude . He thought.

Remus didn’t respond. He just looked down and continued reading. At least that distracted him from the urge to knock Sirius out.

What kind of name was “Sirius” anyway? Remus knew it was the name of a star or something, but who names their kid after a star? A lunatic, that's who. That’s why Sirius is a lunatic as well.

A knock on the compartment door made Remus finally look up from his book after an uncomfortable silence, and another two boys stepped in. One with messy tufts of black hair and round glasses, and another rather pudgy one with thin dirty blonde hair, looking quite nervous.

“Sorry lads, can we sit in with you? Everywhere else is taken.” The boy with glasses asked.

“Sure.” Sirius smiled at them. Remus didn’t even bother to intervene. His plans of reading his book in peace were gone.

“Cheers. I’m James Potter, and this is Pete.” Glasses boy, or apparently, James, said sitting down beside Remus.

“Yeah, hi, Peter Pettigrew.” Blonde boy stuttered. Peter looked torn between squeezing in beside James, his friend by the looks of it, or sitting freely beside a stranger. He ended up just standing awkwardly.

“Oh, Potter. Good. My parents told me not to associate with ‘blood traitors’. You especially. I reckon we’ll be friends.” Sirius announced, holding out his hand for his new friend to shake. “I’m Sirius Black. You already know that though.”

James grinned and shook Sirius’ hand enthusiastically. Remus found it weird how Sirius and James already knew each other but not at the same time.

He ended up just giving up with trying to read for the time being and leant his head against the window of the train.

Peter apparently had had enough of standing, and finally chose to sit next to Sirius. Sirius looked over at him, and smiled politely.

“What’s your name?” James turned to Remus, peering at him curiously, but not unkindly.

“Remus.” He replied, slowly and reluctantly sitting forward once again. All three of the boys were now looking at him and Remus didn’t like it. Not one bit. “Remus Lupin.”

James gave him a small grin, said ‘hi’ and shook his hand before turning back to Sirius and starting a conversation about Quidditch - something the two were obviously very interested in. Remus had never really seen a point in the sport and knew little to nothing about it.

He tried to turn back to his book but Peter, who had not been invited to get involved in the conversation between the other two as of yet, tried desperately to make small talk.

“Hey.” Peter said to him. Remus yet again accepted he won’t get to read his book for another while and closed it, setting it down beside him.

“Hello.” Remus replied. He just wanted to get back to his reading.

“What were you reading?” Peter inquired, peering at the cover of Remus’ book.

“Oh, just some muggle book. It’s not too bad if I’m being honest.” He picked up the book to show the cover to Peter. As much as he didn’t want to talk, at least this was a subject he was interested in.

“Cool, a muggle book. Are you muggle-born?” Peter asked. Now the conversation was leaning into the ‘interview’ section, the one Remus didn’t like.

He still tried his best to keep up the conversation, though. He needed friends and this Peter bloke seemed nice enough.

“No, half-blood. You?” Remus asked.

“I’m pure-blood.” Peter responded, getting a bit quieter.

Remus nodded. He didn’t know what to respond or ask, so he resorted to silence again.

“Where do you live?” Peter spoke up again.

“Abergavenny, in Wales. How ‘bout you?” Remus sighed. As much as he wanted to grab his book and walk out of the compartment to be in silence, he also wanted to make friends.

“Godric’s Hollow in Suffolk. I live right down the street from James.” Peter smiled, nodding his head in the direction of James. Remus smiled too, only out of respect.

A silence formed between the two of them again, and the only thing heard were some half-words taken out of Sirius and James’ conversation on which Quidditch team was better.

Peter reclined awkwardly back into his seat, seemingly realising that the conversation had died and so, Remus decided to go back to his book. He had been rereading the same sentence over and over again.

“So, er, how did you get your scars?” Peter cleared his throat. Remus closed his eyes and took a deep breath, would this boy just leave him alone? James and Sirius suddenly stopped talking, both looking around at Remus and Peter.

They clearly wanted to know the answer too. He had met these boys, what? Ten minutes ago? Maybe less? And he was already being asked about where his scars came from.

There was an awkward silence for what felt like forever but was just around thirty seconds before Remus realised all eyes were still on him.

Remus felt a blush rising to his face and he rifled through his head for all of the excuses he had ever used when this dreaded question came up.

“I- er.. I didn't mean to- to make you uncomfortable. Sorry.” Peter apologised awkwardly.

“No, no, it's fine.” Remus said, shaking his hand gently to calm down Peter's hurried apologies. “I was attacked by- uhm.. a stray dog. It was years ago though.”

James saw the awkwardness of the situation and swiftly moved the conversation back to quidditch. “So, Remus, you play Quidditch? Me, Pete and Black here do.”

Remus had his precious book back in his hands for a solid three seconds to try to continue where he left off and was stopped. Again.

Peter took James bringing up the sport to all of them as an invitation into Sirius and James’ previous conversation that he had clearly not been included in.

James and Sirius had become fast friends. James almost forgetting Peter within a minute of meeting Black. James clearly didn't mean it, as he was now keen to have Peter join in their conversation. Unfortunately, he also wanted Remus to be included.

“Oh, no. No, I don’t.” Remus replied, resting his book on his knees yet again. He was getting tired of this. Couldn’t they just let him read?

“Really?” James asked. He was apparently amazed that someone couldn’t be interested in quidditch as much as he was. “That’s mad.”

“Yeah, well.” Remus replied. “Never bothered with it, I guess.”

“It’s great!” Sirius said. He was speaking to him directly for the first time since the other two boys had entered the compartment. “You just need to learn the basics.”

Remus gave a tight lipped smile with a nod and picked up his book again, signalling he wasn’t interested in learning the ‘basics’. This time he would not let himself be interrupted from his reading.

The other three moved on from his rejection to join and just continued the conversation amongst themselves. Sometimes, someone’s voice would raise as they fought over which beater or seeker was better, and which keeper stopped however many goals. Remus tried to drown them out.

After an hour or two, with a visit from the Sweet Trolley in between (Remus didn't have any money to spend on sweets and feigned being full as an excuse as to why he wasn’t getting anything), an older boy came into their compartment while the three boys were playing a card game with Remus in the corner reading his book.

He was wearing his school robes already, sporting a red tie. He was evidently a Gryffindor. He also had a silver badge pinned to his robes, with prefect etched into it.

Swot, Remus thought.

The older student smiled at them and they all smiled back, save Remus, who was starting to become lightheaded at the strong smell of silver.

Silver being so near him around the full moon becomes intoxicating to Remus. He feels sick just at the smell of it. The other boys obviously had no effect to it whatsoever and just watched the stranger who interrupted them from their Exploding Snap game.

“First years?” The prefect asked. They all nodded. “Great. I’m Frank.” The supposed Frank leant forward to shake all of their hands. “The train will be arriving in around 20 minutes. You four need to get into your robes.”

The four boys nodded and he left.

“Right then. I’m gone to change.” James announced. He grabbed his bag from under his feet and went out of the compartment, presumably to the bathroom. Peter announced the same, and walked out too.

Remus couldn’t be bothered to go and get changed. He was too entranced in his book. But he had to, so he sighed, pulled down the blinds of the compartment door windows, and turned around to grab another one of his worn out bags, this time with his school robes inside.

He then noticed a very obvious presence with him in the train compartment, one he had forgotten about. Sirius.

Remus would not get changed in front of Sirius. He couldn’t show off all of his scars. Especially not the massive bite mark on the side of his body. What the hell would Sirius think?

Sirius, on the other hand, had no problem with getting changed right in front of a boy he met no less than three hours ago. He had already taken his fancy robes off and was standing there in boxers and a black, collared shirt.

“Er.” Remus said, just standing there awkwardly. He felt like he should slap his hands over his eyes and run out of the compartment screaming in terror, but decided otherwise.

Sirius was now sorting through his clothes, presumably looking for something, until he picked up a pair of grey trousers. They were exactly the same as Remus’, except very obviously new whereas his pants looked like they were worn by at least four different students for their first year.

“Yeah?” Sirius questioned, looking up at him while pulling on his grey trousers.

“Are you just gonna get changed in front of me?” Remus asked, all the while looking confused and severely judging him. For what, he didn't know.

It was Sirius’ turn to look confused now and he paused zipping his fly up. “I mean, yeah. We’re supposed to be getting changed, aren’t we?”

“Yeah, yeah.” Remus quickly agreed, realising Sirius wasn’t actually doing anything out of the ordinary. It was fairly normal for lads to get changed in the same room. Sirius didn’t have any scars as far as Remus could see so he didn't have to worry about covering them up from curious eyes. Remus would be doing it with his new dorm mates anyways. So he had to get used to it.

“But, could you.. uh- could you maybe turn around?” Remus asked Sirius.

Him and Sirius were probably going to be sorted into different houses, since Remus’ father was a Ravenclaw and it was fairly common knowledge about the Blacks and the house of Slytherin.

He didn't want to show off any more scars than he had to with someone not part of his dorm. Especially not with a Slytherin.

Sirius looked a bit taken aback and then laughed. “Why? You worried I’m a poof or something?”

But he turned around nonetheless, and continued to get changed, buttoning up his trousers and moving onto unbuttoning his black shirt.

Remus blushed slightly. He was extremely grateful Sirius had his back to him so he didn't see. Remus had not wanted to come off as telling Sirius he thought the black haired boy was gay or had a crush on him

He moved quickly and took his jumper off. When he had the jumper pulled over his head he saw Sirius had taken his shirt off to trade it for the uniform's white one. Remus sucked in a deep breath as he saw the scars on Black’s back.

There were some deep, some shallow lacerations criss crossing all over his back. They were long and looked like some sort of whip had been used, maybe a spell? Some were healed from long ago by the looks of it, having gone either pink or white, like Remus’, but some looked like they were from a month or even, a week ago.

A part of him wanted to ask if he was alright, but another knew that’s what Remus would hate to happen to himself. He settled on averting his gaze from them, and ignoring them. It was the best solution, in Remus’ eyes. He just wished everyone did that when they saw his own scars.

Sirius pulled on his shirt and put on his tie. Either forgetting or ignoring the fact Remus could see the scars on his back.

Remus continued to take off his sweater, and swapped it with the same white button-up Sirius had on, he liked how long the sleeves were, they could cover up more of his scars. Once he finished putting it on, Remus rummaged through his bag to take out the grey school jumper and threw it over himself. There was a stain on the wrist. It was red and Remus hoped to Merlin that it was red ink.

He looked into his bag to see if there were more clothes. His Hogwarts robes and a black tie were the only things left in there. The tie was black, as the ties were colour coded for the four houses so they changed once you got sorted, and he hasn’t been sorted yet. His pair of old dark grey trousers was there too. He quickly threw the black robes over his shoulder, but decided otherwise as he realised how much they reeked of sweat, and another peculiar smell presumably made from a spell. He stuffed the robes back into his bag, hoping for his health’s sake that the robes were at least washed.

The last bit of his uniform were his shoes. All Hogwarts students had to wear black leather dress shoes, but Remus didn’t have any. He would have to settle for his old navy runners he got three years ago from a garage sale. And if any of the staff at Hogwarts tried to tell him that he needed other shoes, it wasn’t his fault.

“Are you done?” Sirius asked, facing away from him. He was just standing there, as if he had finished getting ready a while ago.

“Oh yeah, sorry. You can turn around now.” Remus spoke, still a bit embarrassed.

Sirius turned around and grinned at him. If he noticed, he chose not to acknowledge the fact Remus’ uniform looked much older than his own new, clean one.

“I’m excited to get into Hogwarts. I hope we get to eat straight away.” Sirius chirped happily, stuffing his bag of clothes under the seat.

Remus answered with a quick, “Mm-hm.” and sat back down to open his book.

“What are you reading? Is it interesting? What’s it about?” Sirius asked.

This boy had too much excitement in him. Too many questions, too much happiness.  Remus couldn’t handle it all.

“Er, it’s a muggle book.” Was all that Remus said. He didn’t bother to answer the other two questions Sirius asked, and if he was being honest, he already forgot what those questions were.

“Oh, that’s so cool!” Sirius grinned. “I’ve never read a muggle book before!”

Remus momentarily looked up and nodded and then looked back at his book. When would Potter get back so he could distract Black again? Remus thought.

Sirius sat in his seat across from Remus, slightly leaning forward and interlocking his fingers over and over again. He seemed bored. Or that’s just what Remus gathered from the constant fidgeting.

Remus sighed and set his book down. He might as well entertain Sirius until Peter and James got back. Plus, he wanted to get to know someone at Hogwarts. Even if they were most definitely going to be in Slytherin.

“Why haven’t you read muggle books before?” Remus sighed.

“My parents, mostly.” Sirius replied, sitting up straight again. “They hate anything muggle.”

Remus nodded. “So you’re pureblood, I take it?” He knew the Blacks were purebloods, but it wouldn’t hurt to ask.

“Yeah.” Sirius’ smile faltered.

Remus realised he had struck a sensitive nerve.

“Where are you from?” Remus changed the subject. Obviously somewhere rich, He thought.

“London.” Sirius replied, smiling again at the subject change. “Hate it there. But at least I can try sneak into muggle London sometimes.”

Remus nodded and Sirius continued talking.

“I think I heard you say to that Pettigrew lad that you’re from Wales?” Black questioned.

“Yeah.” Remus replied.

“Cool. I like your accent.” Sirius grinned.

Remus politely smiled back, “Thank you. I, er, like yours too. It’s very posh.”

Sirius nodded awkwardly and a silence fell between the two of them again.

“D’you want to go find James?” Sirius supplied.

Remus nodded. “You can. I’ll stay back and read.”

Sirius smiled, stood up, and opened the compartment door. He closed it again with a slight thud, and Remus was finally left alone.

Remus let out a long sigh. Finally, after 3 and a half hours, he gets a few minutes before arrival to himself to read his beloved book.

After about five minutes, Sirius came back. This time with James and Pete. They were all talking as they walked in and sat down. James then turned to Remus.

“The bathroom had a huge queue, so me and the Pete had to wait for ages . We were almost done getting changed when Black came knocking on the bathroom door for us. What if some poor soul was trying to take a piss, Black?”

Sirius sat down opposite Remus with James following suit just beside Sirius. Peter sat next to Remus.

“Well they weren’t.” Sirius retorted. “Lupin and I were getting bored without you.”

Liar. Remus thought. Only you were.

James just shook his head and started dealing out the cards for exploding snap again, even though there was only less than five minutes left in the journey. Peter picked up one of either James or Sirius’ discarded chocolate frog boxes and took the collecting card out.

The card had a picture of a woman on it. She was wearing pink robes and had a stern look on her face. Remus could read that her name was Artemisia Lufkin.

“Oi, James. Can I keep this?” Peter asked, showing the card to James. James just shrugged.

“Sure, mate. I’ve got loads of her.”

“Thanks!” Peter grinned, pocketing the card.

Remus continued to read his book while the boys played a very short game of Exploding Snap, which was interrupted by the arrival of their train at Hogsmeade Train Station.

“Bollocks.” James groaned when the train came to a stop and students could be heard scuffling around, trying to get their hand baggage and get off the train. He was just winning. “We have to play this again soon, lads.”

Sirius went quiet. Remus presumed that James, Pete and him would want nothing to do with the Black heir once he was sorted into Slytherin. Remus didn’t think Sirius was all that wrong.

They were just finished putting all the cards away and picking up their hand luggage when Frank came back into their compartment.

“Hello, lads.” Frank said grinning at them.

“Hiya.” James greeted. He was helping Peter put the last of the sweets into the blonde boy’s bag.

Peter tried to grab his trunk to take it off the rack but Frank quickly stopped him.

“Oh, no, no. You don’t have to bring that. Those will be brought to your dorms after your sorting. You can leave everything here. Don’t worry.” He told him.

Peter pushed the trunk, about to fall, back onto the rack above the seats with a slight blush.

“Where are we supposed to go?” James asked Frank. They had absolutely no idea of what to do.

“Oh yes, that’s why I came here. You four will just exit the train and you’ll see Hagrid. He’ll bring all the first years to the castle to wait to be sorted.”

Remus and James nodded and Peter mumbled a “thanks”. Sirius stayed quiet, fiddling his fingers and staring at the floor. This was nothing like the confident, chatty and annoying boy Remus had met only a few hours ago.

Frank smiled at them kindly and then left them, probably to let other first years know where they were supposed to go.

Remus and the other three all left the train together. Once they got outside they could see second years and up all crowding over towards the right, where towards the left there was a gaggle of first years looking just as nervous as Remus felt.

Behind the first years, Remus could see a man. He was giant, almost taller than two fully grown men stacked on top of each other. He had a bushy, dark brown beard and he was carrying a massive lantern while calling out.

That was obviously Hagrid, then.

“Firs’ years! Firs’ years! Over ‘ere!” Hagrid called out. The boys all made their way over to Hagrid and the growing group of first years.

After a few minutes more of Hagrid calling out for first years and a few more showing up, it looked like he had them all.

“Righ’, that it?” Hagrid asked, peering around at them all. He seemed satisfied with the amount of students with him and decided to move on. “Well then, follow me.”

He turned around and started to walk, all of the scared, eleven year olds following after him. Some first years, more than likely students that were pure bloods or with older siblings, looked more confident compared to the others. James was amongst them. He was walking along while talking to Sirius, who was looking less nervous than earlier. He was still fidgeting uneasily, though.

Soon enough, they reached a dock. Remus started to panic. Were they expected to sail across the lake? What if the boat sank? Remus was ninety-nine percent sure he could not swim if he fell out.

Apparently, the others felt the same way Remus did and all looked apprehensively at the dock. Hagrid noticed and chuckled.

“Don’ worry, they’re magic. You just sit in ‘em and they’ll take ye to the castle.”

The students all started to clamber into boats, desperate to not get left behind in case there wasn’t enough space.

“Four to a boat!” Hagrid called out.

Remus followed Sirius into a boat, James and Peter had gotten split up from them during the fight to get in a boat. Sirius and Remus were sharing one with a blonde haired girl and a girl with mid length red hair.

The red head seemed to be looking around for someone and when Remus and Sirius sat down in her boat she gave up.

“Have you seen Sev?” She asked, sounding a bit exasperated.

“Who?” Remus questioned, confused.

“Oh, never mind.” She slumped down and then looked up again.

“Oh goodness, my manners! Hey.” The red haired girl greeted. “I’m Lily.” She smiled kindly.

The blonde also smiled and introduced herself. “Marlene.” She said.

Remus gave a small smile and gave his name. “Remus.”

“Oooh.” Lily gasped. “That’s such a cool name!” She had obviously forgotten about looking for ‘Sev’.

Lily had complimented Remus’ name in such a kind way that he couldn’t help himself smiling.

Marlene turned to Sirius who had gone quiet again. Apparently, without James his newfound nervousness came back. Remus supposed it was about the sorting, Sirius was probably worried that he wouldn’t get into Slytherin or something.

“What’s your name?” Marlene questioned Sirius.

Sirius looked up when he realised Marlene was talking to him. “Me? Oh, uh. Sirius.” He looked back down and started playing with his fingers once again.

“So, are any of you muggle born?” Lily asked the three. “I am.” She added. “Mum and Dad were shocked, of course. I’ve spent the whole of the month before school reading up on this place. And reading our textbooks. It’s all so interesting.”

Lily seemed just as excited as Remus was, he just wasn’t showing it. He still couldn’t believe he was actually allowed to go to Hogwarts.

“I'm half blood.” Remus replied to her. He liked Lily so far. She was quite easy to have a conversation with. “My Mum’s a muggle.”

“Pure blood.” Marlene said, then she looked at Sirius for an answer. He looked like he was going to get sick and continued staring at the floor, obviously not noticing that all eyes were on him.

“Is he okay?” Lily asked Remus, clearly concerned. Remus took another look at Sirius. He was kind of worried himself now. If Sirius vomited on his shoes they would be ruined . And he’d have to wait ages for a new pair.

“I'm sure he's fine.” Remus answered Lily. “Probably just nervous for the sorting.” Sirius either couldn’t hear them talking about it or he just chose to ignore it. Remus didn't mind either way.

“Oh! About the sorting!” Marlene suddenly got excited. “What houses do you guys think you’ll be in?”

Remus hadn’t paid mind to that thought much. But now that it was only less than half an hour away he started to get nervous over which house he was going to be put in.

If it’s Slytherin I’ll kill myself. Remus thought. I'm not sharing a dorm with that twat.

Remus didn’t particularly mind being put in Slytherin itself, but with Sirius? Remus had only known him around four hours and he could already predict that living with him would be hell.

He didn't even know what grudge he held against Sirius. Maybe it was the fact he stole Remus’ peaceful, empty compartment or that he can’t pick up on basic social cues or that he kept interrupting his reading. Or just maybe, that he has this arrogant nature about him. Either way, Remus doesn’t like him so far.

Okay, maybe he was being unfair. Sirius wasn’t that bad. But he wasn’t that good either.

“Maybe Ravenclaw.” Remus finally answered. “That’s where my dad went so-.”

He was cut off by Lily gasping. They had just come into a proper, full view of Hogwarts and Remus and the two girls were in awe. Even Sirius momentarily looked up to take in the view.

This was about to be his home for the next seven years.
