Part Four
A few more weeks pass and then I received a call from my mother. Normally I only received pictures she's colored or tiktoks she liked and thought I would also enjoy or other messages through online sources, so I'm sure you can imagine my surprise at receiving a call.
“Hello?” I answered a bit confused and concerned.
“You'll never guess what happened!” She said rather excitedly, and before I could even ask, ‘what’ she was already explaining to me exactly what happened.
“I was driving home after a BSA leaders meeting and I saw this hitchhiker. A tall, young man with a wide brimmed hat. He was wearing a blue unembroidered stole over a formal black robe, and in his hand he had a hockey stick that looked oddly like a staff.”
Suspecting where this was going I asked what happened next, while also putting it on speaker so my partner could also hear what she said.
“Well, I slowed down and stopped for him of course,” she said matter of factly. “I rolled down my window and told him while unlocking the doors, ‘Get in, Bob sent me!’ To which he replied, ‘Of course he did, what now?’ While climbing in. So I told him, ‘he said you needed a lift, he failed to mention where too though.’”
“Then what?” I asked excitedly all while knowing the theme of this story all too well.
“Well I took him where he asked and as he was getting out he handed me his business card, saying if I ever needed anything he owed me one. So I asked if it wasn't too much trouble, I'd like that favor now. He asked what would that be? So I asked for a photo with him, and that he wait long enough for me to call you, explain the situation, and then have him speak to you, since I know the photo alone won't be enough.”
As she said that I got an image text from her, and in the picture it showed my mom standing in front of her car, and next to her was none other than Henry Dresden.
Before I could even finish gawking at the photo I hear a man's voice come on the phone, “hey kid, I heard you're a fan. I don't got much time to talk but your mom really helped me out today so the least I could do was make sure you knew she was telling the truth when she told you what happened today.”
“Wow, it's such an honor to get to speak with you and really cool that my mom actually got to meet you!” I say excitedly, stumbling over my words and at a loss for how else to respond.
“Well I got to go help save the world now,” he says. “Hope this was enough proof for you.”
“It was,” I respond still awestruck.
I can faintly hear him saying bye and thanks again to my mom before I hear her come back on the phone, “pretty cool right?” She asks.
“Yeah it was, its also kind of crazy how often I've heard similar stories lately.” I say before telling her what happened to my partner, my sibling, and I. “I hadn't bothered telling you prior since it was so crazy I didn't think you'd believe me,” I explain to her. She understood why I felt that way. After that we hung up and continued on with our days.
