The flashy lights of the illuminated signs lit up the rather dark but ever-bustling city. Cars passed by the streets below the window of a nearby law enforcement firm. Not everyone’s first choice as a place to work, especially with the more exciting jobs being introduced to the city of progress.
Yet the drone of crime and justice appealed to a young woman. Someone desperate to escape the firm grasp her parents held on her. Caitlyn Kiramman.
She was new to the office and eager to work, yet her recent placement in the job led her to be handed all the unpleasant tasks that nobody wanted. Clearing the litter on the streets. Handing out parking tickets. Things one would expect to do at a simple police job. But Caitlyn thrived for more—desperate for the thrill of a real job. Something that could prove she could handle more than placing a few tickets on poorly parked vehicles.
And boy, did she get what she wanted.
An assignment was brought to her, seeming nearly impossible. Take down the illegal underground racing. The criminal actions had been going on for years, right under the noses of the government, and nobody had yet to put a stop to the reckless behavior and illegal betting. But Caitlyn was determined to prove everyone wrong. This was her chance.
Days and nights were spent planning her next move. Perhaps she could sabotage the vehicles? There is no race if the cars don’t work, right? But Caitlyn knew next to nothing about the mechanics of how cars worked. Her only experience with engines was in the driver’s seat, not under the hood.
She rolled over her options again, leaning against the cold steel of her office window. The city lights blurred outside, painting the walls with streaks of neon. Caitlyn’s fingers tapped anxiously on the windowpane. She knew she had to come up with a better plan. The underground racing world was full of hidden dangers and unknowns. The people who participated in these races were smart. Smarter than most gave them credit for. Caitlyn couldn’t just muscle her way through this. She had to outsmart them. But how?
The racing crews wouldn’t fall for a simple trick, and they wouldn’t trust an outsider. She couldn’t just show up with a badge and expect them to roll over. No, she had to become part of their world. She had to prove herself as one of them. She'd need to get close. Earn their trust. Just when they least expect it, she’d pull the plug on their hazardous practices. The place would shut down and the poor racers would be left stunned.
A bit much if you asked Caitlyn.
But she had no choice. If she wanted to stop them, she had to get inside the racing world itself. She had to race.
