Chapter 3
Lily was, well lily was incredible. Mary was sitting on the bleachers next to remus watching quidditch practice. Or atleast thats what she said. In reality she was there watching lily. Lilys scarlet hair streamed behind her as she soared around the field in a complex flying manover. Her emerald eyes gleamed in the bright spring light and her strong legs gripped the broom as she turned sharply and blew a kiss at remus and mary.
Remus made an obnoxious show of catching the kiss and holding it to his heart before smiling and turning to mary.
“Shes really amazing isnt she?” remus said looking at her with a strange gleam in his eyes that mary couldnt decipher.
“Yeah she is” mary said trying not to sigh dreamily. She wasnt supposed to be feeling this way but ever since last year when they played truth or dare and mary has kissed her things had been differently. She found herself thinking of her clever friend and had to pull her eyes away from her on multiple occasions. She had started going out with sirius in the hopes that it would help her get over this silly crush. I mean everyone liked sirius for merlins sake! Except her apparently. The one girl he actually went out with and she didnt even like guys. She would feel bad if she didnt know that sirius didnt like her either. She didnt know why he had started going out with her but it was clear he didnt actually like her like that.
“Mary!” remus said pulling her out of her thoughts. “Did you hear anything I just said?” he asked laughing.
Mary blushed. “oh , uh sorry I guess I was just lost in thought. What did you say?”
Remus laughed and looked at her with that strange gleam again.
“I was just saying that I think practce is over. The team’s getting changed and should be out soon”
“Oh uh thanks” marry said as she looked down at the field. It was indeed eptying of gryffindors as the slytherin team walked out. Mary saw dorcas pull marlene aside. They spoke for a second before kissing softly and separating.
“Im glad those two got together” remus observed offhandedly. “The tension was starting to get really annoying” he shot mary another look and she felt her cheeks heat up.
“What is that?” she yelled, standing up quickly. “Why do you keep looking at me like that?”
Remus just laughed and mary flushed harder.
“Well if your not going to tell me at least have the decency to not laugh in my face!” with that she stormed of.
“Wait mary!” remus called after her. Mary stopped but didnt turn around. “Im sorry I laughed at you” he said when he realised she wasnt going to say anything. “Ive just had a weird couple of weeks and the way you were talking reminded me of someone. That all.”
Mary wasnt satisfyed but she returned around, remus was one of her closest friends. “Ok, apology accepted. Just please dont look at me like that, it makes me think you know something I dont.”
“Ok,” remus said looking at her with genuine remorse. “Im sorry, ill stop.”
“Thank you” mary said walking back over to him. “Now come on whats your next class? Ill walk you there.”

Remus’s next class happened to be defence against the dark arts. Remus and mary walked to remus class talking and laughing. When they got to the class remus gave her a hug and thanked her for walking him to class.
“Anytime” she said smiling as she walked away.
Remus walked into class and smiled when he saw the rest of the marauders sitting at a dest near the front.
“Moony!” sirius immediately called when he noticed remus and, was it his imagination or was sirius more excited to see him than usual?
“Padfoot, wormy, prongs” remus said sitting down with the rest of them. “Any clue whats were doing today?”
“Were learning about bogarts today,” peter responded immediately. The others excepted this. If anyone knew it was peter.
“Uhg i hate boggarts. Theyre so embarassing,” sirius whined. “I mean i dont want the whole school to know my worst fear!” remus couldent agree more. He always ot weird looks when his boggart turned into a full moon.
“Alright class” the teacher called and the marauders quieted. “Today were going to be talking about boggats and hen at the end we will have a practical demonstration.”
Remus zoned out as the teacher talked. They had done this last year and they all knew how this was supposed to go. He thought about last year. How sirius’s bogart had turned into his mother. How sirius had put on a brave face but how remus had found him crying in the bathroom after class. He hoped that since sirius had ran away to live with james that his fear of his parents would dissipate a bit.
Finally the lecture ended and the practical demonstration began. A few people went and there were the common things. Spiders and clowns and in lilys case a bad grade.
Most people snickered at that but remus remembered the time about a year ago when lily had gotten a bad grade and and had been sent a leter from her parents. Remus didnt know what the leter said but he did know that he had held her for hours after while she cried. He shot a glare at the students and the snickering subsided.
Too soon it was his turn and he flinched at the full moon. People gave him weird looks but he just cast the charm and moved on. Next in line was sirius. Remus expected many things and when a dark figure appeared he wasnt surprised. What did surprise him though was when the dark figure didnt solidify into sirius’s mother and instead started speaking with a distorted voice.
“I could never love someone like you.” the figure rasped and sirius flinched noticeably. “You must be crazy to think i could ever want someone ike you. Your broken”
Sirius quickly cast the charm and the bogart disappeared but sirius could see tears in sirius’s eyes when he pushed past the next person in line and sat down.
“Hey, you ok?” remus asked, scooting closer to where sirius was sitting.
Sirius looked up suddenly wiping his eyes. “Oh yeah im fine, what about you, i saw some people giving you weird looks.”
“Eh, im used to it.” remus responded with a small sad smile. Sirius nodded and scooted a bit closer.
“You shouldnt have to be,” he said his hand dropping down to rest right next to remus’s. Remus didnt have a response to this and so they just sat like that for a while.
