The Black family gave Regulus many teachings, most of which he learned to ignore, others he grasped as a mantra. Growing up in a household that valued cunning and ambition, he had no problem using any means to achieve his goals, although he has drawn a line at not hurting other people. He is ambitious, he never denied it and from an early age he vowed never to give up on his goals due to outside influence.
When he accepted his homosexuality at fourteen, he started saving money because he knew that his parents would not accept him. When he was expelled, he had already gotten a scholarship to journalism school. Determined to pursue his passion for writing, he immersed himself in the world of words, seeking to give voice to untold stories and championing causes that were important to him.
It was in college that he met Barty Crouch Jr. They actually went to high school together, but he always thought Barty was “too much.” In college, they crossed paths in sports journalism class - a subject Regulus hated.
And then he truly got to know Barty Crouch Jr and fell in love.
At the age of fourteen, Regulus fell in love for the first time. It happened while watching his brother's football practice, and seeing James Potter lift the team's shirt, revealing his toned abdomen, he was certain he was gay. His passion for Potter lasted three years, three years of agony having to meet him whenever he visited his brother, knowing nothing could happen because Potter was decidedly heterosexual.
But Barty was different. He exuded a seductive energy, flirting whenever he had the chance, regardless of the person. Charming, uninhibited, outgoing. Regulus was immediately drawn to him. By mid-semester, they were already making out in the dormitory when they should have been writing a report on the consequences of American football players' traumas.
They were intense, like fire and gasoline. Every touch, every exchanged glance between Regulus and Barty was charged with magnetic electricity, transcending the boundaries of the world and plunging into emotionally fiery territory. The intensity of their relationship promised a future full of discoveries, passion, and the pledge of something deeper than either had ever imagined.
And then they split up a year later.
They were already close to graduating and Barty was always talking about moving to Italy and covering Formula 1 races. Barty already had a plan, a house and a possible job opportunity. Regulus also had his plan too, one that didn't involve Italy and leaving everything he wanted because of a passion, no matter how in love he was.
It was at that moment that Regulus discovered another side of Barty, the side of a friend. Barty didn't get angry, they didn't argue, they didn't say horrible things to each other. Barty understood him and supported his dreams. They shared a silent understanding that transcended their romantic relationship.
And then they became best friends.
After graduation, Barty headed to Italy as planned, while Regulus got a job at The Sun. They met whenever they could, sharing relaxed moments, drinking, exchanging gossip, meeting new people and sometimes consoling each other over romantic disappointments. One of these times Barty made Regulus promise that if they were single at thirty, they would get married. It was a joke, but at the same time, it wasn't.
A week before Barty's birthday, he called Regulus for the first time in three months.
"I was starting to think you'd died," Regulus said as soon as he answered the phone.
"Hey Reggie, what's up?"
Regulus was indignant "What's up? Three months without hearing from you and this is how you talk to me?"
"Where are you?" Barty asked.
“At home” Regulus was going down the stairs to go to the kitchen
“I need you to stop whatever you were doing and sit down” Barty ordered seriously over the phone.
Regulus stopped with a few steps to go. “Why?”
“I’m getting married in six days”
After hearing this, Regulus, who was ready to go down the last two steps of the stairs, missed a step and fell flat on his face.
“What was that?”“ With the sound of the fall Barty started shouting into the phone “Hello, Reg, are you there?”
Quickly getting up from the floor, Regulus didn't care about the pain, he just wanted to know one thing: “What do you mean, get married? With whom?"
“Evan Rosier, do you remember him?”
A year ago they went on vacation to France. Regulus was on vacation and Barty was covering a racing circuit. On Regulus' last day in the capital, they meet Evan Rosier in the VIP box, a very distant and forgotten cousin of Regulus. Although the Black family is predominantly French, Regulus and his brother grew up with a mother who showed her contempt for the country from an early age, unlike their father. So when Evan introduced himself, Regulus didn't pay much attention, unlike Barty, who called four days later recounting every possible detail of the week spent with Rosier.
“Rosier?” He didn’t understand “The last time we spoke, you were sleeping with someone called Héstia Jones from the Mercedes team”
“Well” Barty sighed “After that time, whenever I was in Paris, we would met, it was never a serious until I went on vacation and went to stay with him”
“When did you go on vacation?”
“May.Anyway, I came to the city whenever I could, we spent hours on the phone, we started dating and last month I proposed to him” Bart took a breath “I'm in love with him Reggie, I am”
Regulus remained silent for a moment, processing Barty's surprising revelation. The idea of his best friend getting married, especially to someone he didn't know very well, was unbelievable.
"Wow, Barty, that's... quite news. I wasn't expecting that."
Silence hung on the phone line. “I want you to be here” Barty said softly “I want you to be my best man”
Regulus was speechless "Barty, this is all so sudden. I don't even know this guy well, I don't think it's a good idea. But…of course I'm going to your wedding"
Barty sighed on the other end of the line, understanding Regulus' hesitation. "I know it's quick, Reggie, but I feel like it's right. Evan is amazing, and I truly believe we can both be happy together."
Regulus nodded apprehensively, even though Barty couldn't see him. "I just want you to be happy, Barty. If he makes you happy, then I'm happy for you. I'll try to get to know him better before the wedding."
Barty thanked him, and the conversation continued between the friends as Regulus processed the news, realizing that changes were lurking and that the dynamic between them would be tested once again.
At the end of the call, looking at his empty kitchen, Regulus realized that unconsciously he had hoped they had fulfilled the promise made years ago. They had a perfect story, exes turned best friends who always loved each other, who would be together in the end. They were perfect.
Even after all these years, Barty still looked at Regulus with a mischievous glint. There was desire between them, there was chemistry. Regulus had never felt for anyone what he felt for Barty in that year of their relationship. There was no way Barty loved Evan Rosier more than he loved Regulus.
On Tuesday night, Regulus found himself at Sirius' apartment, along with his brother and Remus. Sirius and Remus's story was somewhat similar to Regulus and Barty's. They were once best friends who became boyfriends, eventually got married, and now were expecting their first child through a surrogate. They were perfect too, although Regulus would never admit that out loud to them. Unfortunately, James Potter and his son, with his puppy-dog eyes, were also in the house.
“Let me get this straight” Remus whispered next to him in the kitchen “Are you going to try to sabotage your best friend's wedding?”
“It’s not like that” Regulus defended himself against the accusation “The wedding is Sunday, I still have four days to see if he’s sure about it”
“And you’re going to do this by trying to seduce him?”
“It's more like showing him that he still loves me” Regulus quickly replied “Actually….. Urgh, I don't know. I just want to make sure there's nothing left between us, not even a spark. If there is, I..”
“If there is, you will take him to bed and ruin the marriage” Remus finished the sentence.
“Speaking of it in that way,” Regulus murmured in agreement “Are you going to tell me that you wouldn’t do the same if you were in my place?”
Remus sighed, looking at Regulus with a worried expression. "Reg, I understand you still have feelings for Barty, but trying to interfere in his marriage like that isn't cool."
Regulus looked away, recognizing the reason in Remus' words. "I know, Lupin. I just can't help but think that maybe things could be different between us."
"Sometimes people take different paths, Regulus. That doesn't mean what you had wasn't special, it just means things changed."
Before Regulus could respond, Sirius interrupted the conversation excitedly. "What are you gossiping about?"
Regulus rolled his eyes and ignored his brother's question. The night continued with him teasing Sirius and Potter, who always responded to his teasing with flirtation, but Regulus couldn't help but ponder Remus' words.
“Why are you sad, Uncle Reggie?” Harry asked when they were all in the room.
“I’ve already told you I’m not your uncle” Regulus replied more rudely than he intended, receiving a pinch from Sirius, who was beside him.
“Uncle Reggie” Remus emphasized “It’s like this because the guy he loves is going to marry someone else”
"Why? He does not love you?" Harry asked again at the age of seven years.
Regulus looked at him “Hm..”
"Harry, sometimes we love someone very much but don't realize it, until one day things change, and everyone goes their own way," Sirius explained, interrupting before Regulus could continue.
“Like what happened to mom and dad?”
“That’s right, big boy” James ran his hand through Harry’s hair “Uncle Reggie, many years ago, loved an idiot who is now going to marry someone else”
“He’s not an idiot” Regulus said defending Barty
“He’d rather marry another guy than you, an idiot” James winked at him, making Regulus shudder.
“If it was so many years ago, why do you still love him?” Harry asked again
“Urgh Potter, does your son have to ask so many questions?”
“He's in the questioning phase” James shrugged “And does it make sense after all these years now that you're going to grieve for him?
Regulus sighed irritably before responding. "Sometimes, Harry, love is complicated. It's not something we can control. Even though it's been a long time, sometimes the feelings linger. It doesn't mean I'll grieve for it, but... it's hard to stop loving someone completely."
“Love isn’t complicated, people are” James retorted, but Regulus ignored him.
At the end of the night, it was just Regulus and James – and Harry sleeping on James' arms, going down in the elevator. James looked at him intently. “I don’t think you love him”
“Excuse me?!” Regulus felt offended
“I know about your promise, Sirius told me.” James said in a low voice for his son's sake, “You're just feeling like you love him because you've built up expectations about it. And now it feels like something has been taken away from you, it’s a tantrum” his voice remained calm “Do you really want to ruin his wedding?”
Regulus was furious at James' accusation. “You don't know anything, Potter. Barty adored me, for the last nine years he was in love with me. Has he known Evan for three months? Want to know? I'm going to that wedding and I'm going to prove that he still has feelings for me.”
“I will be here to comfort you when you come back”
“In your dreams Potter” Regulus said sarcastically getting out of the elevator
Regulus arrived in Paris the afternoon of the next day, Barty was waiting for him at the arrivals exit with a sign saying “Little Prince” making Regulus smile and Barty smile automatically when saw him. As soon as he stood in front of Barty, he was pulled into a bear hug, which if it had been anyone else, Regulus would have already punched.
“My shining star” Barty said while still in the hug.
"Let me see you," Regulus pulled back to watch his friend. And, wow. Barty, who had always been beautiful, seemed to have improved over time without all those piercings, bleached hair and mascara from his college days – although at the time Regulus loved his rebelliousness.
His brown eyes exuded a bold confidence, while a wry smile always danced on his lips. His dark, messy hair complemented his laid-back, uninhibited appearance. Tall and slender, Barty displayed a magnetic presence, his confident stance revealing an endearing self-confidence. Every feature on his face seemed to have matured like a fine wine. Time has not left any negative marks on Barty; on the contrary, it seemed to have enhanced her attractiveness and charm.
“Beautiful as always, I know, you can say” Barty said confidently
Regulus rolled his eyes at his friend's modesty, “Of course.” Still staring at his friend, he affectionately ran his hand through Barty's hair – always soft.
“Hi Reg!” Evan appeared next to Barty, making Regulus blush and withdraw his hand.
“Oh. Hello” Regulus smiled towards the groom “I think congratulations are in order”
Barty cast an amused look at Regulus, noticing his friend's slight embarrassment at Evan's presence. "Reg, this is Evan, my fiancé and your cousin. Evan, this is Regulus, my best friend."
Evan rolled his eyes at Barty. "I think this is only the fourth or fifth time we've met"
Regulus returned the smile, trying to hide any discomfort. "But now I don't think that will ever happen again."
Evan nodded in agreement "Barty told me that you two have a special friendship. You are always present in our conversations"
Barty intervened before things could get any more uncomfortable. "Come on, guys. My two favorite people in the world are together for the weekend. The party is just beginning." Barty put her arm around Evan and Regulus' shoulders and guided them out of the airport.
Regulus nodded, relieved by the change in focus. "Let's go, then. I don't want to miss the opportunity to meet the people who have the pleasure of being part of Barty's life now."
In the next thirty minutes, Regulus discovered that Evan could drive worse than Barty. Regulus' friend never respected traffic rules. Evan Rosier not only ignored road signs but also made dangerous overtakes one after another at high speed. Regulus saw his death five times on the way to the hotel.
“You're on the fifth floor with Barty's family,” Evan said as they were going up the hotel elevator. “We're trying on suits in an hour; Barty said you agreed to be the best man, so we need to confirm your measurements.” He relayed the information and checked the schedule on his phone. As soon as the elevator stopped, he bid farewell to Regulus. “I have to review the arrangements with Pandora,” he concluded, kissing Barty.
Regulus frowned at the scene but dismissed it as soon as Barty turned toward him."
“So what did you think?” Barty asked with expectations in her eyes
“About what?” Regulus feigned disagreement
“Evan”
“Oh” Regulus took the moment he opened the bedroom door to think about his response “Polite, as I knew he would be. Handsome, although I didn't know blonde was his type. Dedicated to marriage, right? I didn't think you were going to have a traditional wedding” He said everything while packing his things in the room and sitting on the bed, facing Barty in the chair next to him.
“First of all, blonde isn’t my type, Evan is. Second, we are not truly dedicated to marriage, his sister is, Pandora. And she's bothering him with all the things. It won’t be a traditional wedding, it will be on the terrace of a building in front of the Seine, nothing too big during sunset.”
"The sunset?"
“There’s an explanation for that, but I didn’t pay much attention to what she said” Barty explained.
“And your parents are here?”
“My mother and my grandparents, some of the newspaper staff and you.” Barty and Regulus faced each other “Go on, say what you want to say”
After all Barty knew him very well, taking a breath Regulus began “Are you sure about this? I don't think three months of a relationship is enough to know that you want to spend your whole life with this person. Besides, he's not your type, you said it yourself. Damn Barty, he’s not even my type, and I’m sure we were raised the same.”
Barty sighed, "Reg, I know this all seems too fast," Barty began, running a hand through her hair. "But there's something about Evan that makes me want to try, something unlike anything I've ever felt before. He makes me happy, and I think I deserve that. And I love him, isn’t that the main reason I want to spend my life with somebody?"
Regulus watched his friend closely, absorbing his words. "Happy is one thing, Barty, but marriage is serious. I don't want to see you getting hurt or making hasty decisions."
Barty nodded, acknowledging Regulus' concern. "I know you care about me, Reg. And I'm nervous too, but I feel like it's the right thing to do. And about it only being three months into the relationship... We've been kind of together for almost a year, since we first met. We spoke on the phone almost every day. I visited him or he went to visit me in Italy. Can you believe that? He traveled there just to see me, I know him Reggie. I know what I'm doing."
Regulus sighed, realizing that the conversation wouldn't change Barty's decision. "I just want you to be happy, Barty"
Barty smiled, appreciating Regulus' honesty and genuine concern. "I know little star, I want you to be happy too."
Regulus laughed, relaxing a little. "I'll always be here, Barty, even when you make decisions I don't understand. Now, come on, we have suits to try on and measurements to confirm."
When they arrived at the atelier, to see the suit they found Evan and a woman who looked extremely similar to him. That was when Regulus met Pandora Rosier, with her extremely blonde curls.
“We are following the rule of not being able to see the groom clothes before the wedding. So, you stay over there and Evan and I go over here” She said, moving them away from the room where she and Evan were.
Alone in the room Barty commented in a whisper “Evan’s suit is dark blue velvet, mine is blue too but it’s not velvet”
“Have you seen it?”
“He chose mine and I chose his” Barty replied as if that made sense.
After that, each went into a different dressing room. The suit that awaited Regulus behind the door was a dark green, causing him to grimace at the color.
"Green for the best man?" he asked as he exited the cabin, trying to adjust the tight-fitting clothes on his body.
"No, just for you," Evan said, staring at him. Beside him was a woman who began taking Regulus's measurements as soon as he stepped onto the pedestal. "You wouldn't feel right unless it's different; the other groomsmen are wearing classic black suits."
Regulus looked at him suspiciously. “What else did he tell you?”
"That you don't like anything conventional, traditional. That you avoid serious commitments. Or anything that deviates from your plan for a successful career."
“My career ambition was never a problem for him”
"I know. But your choice hurt him once. And I understand you, really understand. I used to be like that, career first, until I met him. Then it made sense to end an affair to have time to visit him in another country, like a foolishly in love idiot. Funny, isn't it?"
"Very," Regulus replied with a fake smile. "I need to make a call." He returned to his dressing room.
He was furious and hastily removed his clothes. In the dressing room, wearing only boxer briefs, he paced back and forth, dialing Remus.
“Hello” But it was Potter who answered
“Where is Remus, what are you doing with his cell phone?”
“I'm in the apartment, Moony is taking a shower and his brother has paint on his hand. So, Hi”
“Have I told you I hate you?”
"I think it's been a week since you last said that; it must be our record," James said incredulously. "Oh, Reggie, are you ready to admit that you're falling for me?"
“Urgh” Just like Regulus, Sirius made a sound of disgust in the background of the call “Can you pass it on to Sirius then?”
“To want to talk to your brother, things must be serious” Regulus rolled his eyes at the joke “What’s going on?”
“He's an idiot” Taking a deep breath he said, after all that was what he wanted.
"I said"
“Not Barty, Evan” Regulus corrected him.
"What did he do?"
“Do you know Narcissa? He has that passive-aggressive way of his, which gives you poisonous words behind a delicate and fake smile.”
“All of you Blacks have this passive-aggressive way about them” James said, and once again Regulus heard Sirius disagreeing at the end.
"He is my cousin"
"Wait. Seriously?" James asked and started laughing “Crouch is a son of a bitch”
"What? Why?"
Someone knocked on Regulus' door distracting him from Potter's reply "Come in."
“Oh” Barty looked at him, making Regulus a little embarrassed “Do you want me to turn around?”
“Reggie?” James called into the phone, at which Regulus silenced him.
“Yes” Regulus answered Barty’s question “I thought it was someone else”
“You know, I’ve seen you naked” Barty remembered
Regulus quickly threw on a shirt, “But it’s different now. You can turn around”
“Yes, it's different” Barty looked at him again “You're still as beautiful as I remember” then he left.
Regulus smiled and returned the call "Potter, this wedding isn't going to happen" and he hung up.
On the way back to the hotel, to Regulus' horror, it was Evan who drove once again. This time it was just the two of them in the car. And he paid attention to more things about the groom. The car was a top-of-the-line sedan and impeccably clean. Evan wore glasses that were more expensive than Regulus' salary, just like your clothes. Heir.
“Do your parents don’t mind you being gay?” Regulus asked suddenly taking Evan's focus off the traffic, making them almost hit the car in front "Fuck"
“Oh sure,” Evan nodded. “Barty You told me your parents disowned you when you came out. Well... my parents freaked out at first, but then they accepted it. My father came back six months later saying that this wouldn’t take away my responsibility to give them grandchildren, that I would have options.”
“Of course, heir”
“Uh… it’s not like that” Evan said “My sister already has a daughter, Luna, my parents love her, they really want grandchildren”
"And you want? Children?"
“I think so, maybe in a decade”
"God. Can you imagine Barty taking care of a child?” Regulus scoffed.
“Actually, he’s amazing with Luna” Evan smiled “I’m sure he’ll be a great father”
Regulus was shocked. When they dated Barty and Regulus confessed that they had no desire to have children. Both reasons were the upbringing they received from their parents. Orion and Walburga Black were the worst parents anyone could have. Regulus was surprised when Sirius told him of his plan to have children with Lupin six months ago. Now Barty has also possibly changed her mind.
“So.. what are your plans after the wedding?” Regulus asked to change the subject. “For the love of God, slow down” he complained, holding on to the car seat
“Not a big fan of adrenaline, right?” Evan scoffed, but slowed down.
“I like being alive”
“I always liked following these car races, when I was a child I even thought about being a racer. It must be destiny, me and Barty” Evan commented “About the wedding, the honeymoon will be covering the circuit of Australia and New Zealand, I think we will stay there for a month, then we will go to Dubai and then Europe, I think"
“So, will you be accompanying him on these trips?”
“It’s his career, and I intend to support him in that. Besides, I’ve been to all these places, I know it will be worth it”
“Lucky for him then” Regulus tried to avoid sounding sarcastic, but seeing Rosier frown he knew he couldn't.
They had already arrived at the hotel, and Regulus was analyzing Rosier's posture, finding the guy very condescending and he felt a slight discomfort at Evan's response.
“How do you put up with all his quirks?” Regulus broached another topic as they got on the elevator. “God, I hate his habit of coughing after eating and drinking anything. It's disgusting"
"It's like he's got a ton of phlegm in his chest; I made him see a doctor, but nothing showed up in his tests," Evan commented, surprising Regulus because Barty hated hospitals.
“What about the habit of smoking before bed? Horrible!" said Regulus.
“I'm done with this,” Evan said firmly, surprising Regulus once again."But he still leaves clothes scattered all over the room. Still likes those gruesome suspense movies, reads over my shoulder, and loves singing Italian songs at karaoke bars. I know many languages except Italian, much to my dismay," Evan ended with a hint of anguish.
"Really?" Regulus was interested in the information
“And he still bites his lip.”
“It’s his trademark. Don’t change that”
Evan smiled “And what a good kisser!”
Regulus was embarrassed by the memory “It’s been so long…. But I'll take your word for it.”
Evan stared at him seriously. "I found the ring five days before he proposed to me. I thought about leaving that same day. On the second day, I made a list of all the reasons why this wouldn't work; there were plenty of reasons. When the third day ended, I knew I was completely in love with him. On the fourth day, I threw the list away." In the middle of his speech, he pressed the button to stop the elevator, startling Regulus.
“Aren’t you uncomfortable in closed spaces?”
"I know you think it was fast, and you're worried about him. But as far as I'm concerned, I'll love him completely. And all these questions, it's cute, but none of them will make me doubt this marriage."
“Press this button” Regulus says, getting a little hysterical, heading towards the panel
Evan stood in front of Regulus “But you do”
"What?" Regulus stopped
“It was always you” Evan said quietly. “The perfect person he loved the most. And it was hard at first. Everything we did, he did with you. I wanted to compete with that, I admit. And at some point I think I hated you.” Regulus stepped back, breathing heavily, “But what could I do? Feel jealous of youforever? You will be in his life.”
"Of course"
“And he will talk about you”
“Normal” Regulus could feel his anxiety attack beginning as he walked back and forth in the elevator, trying to distance himself from Rosier.
“It was then that I realized that the answer is so simple”
"Obviously"
“You already won” Evan softened his voice.
"What?" Regulus didn't understand what he had heard
“You are his dream, everything he idealized. You are on a pedestal, something desirable but unattainable. But me? I'm by his side, in his arms.”
Regulus was silent for a moment, processing Evan's words. A mix of emotions flooded him, from discomfort to anger. “So why did you tell me all this?” Regulus finally asked, still a little dazed.
Evan shrugged, “Sometimes it's good to put your cards on the table. I know he will always have a space for you in his heart, but now he has chosen to build something different with me. And from what he told me, you’ve also built a life and are happy with what you have.” Then he pressed the button allowing the elevator door to open.
In a fit of rage, Regulus quickly exited, bumping into two women. He crossed the hotel lobby with quick and furious steps, completely ignoring the people around him. He felt suffocated, as if the weight of Evan's words was crushing him. The cool night breeze hit him as he finally walked out through the hotel's main door.
"Regulus, wait!" Evan's voice echoed behind him, but Regulus didn't look back. He needed space, he needed to breathe
The street was silent except for the distant sound of cars passing by and city lights twinkling under the dark sky. Regulus stopped at the curb, feeling lost and disoriented. He needed time to process everything he had just heard, to organize his tumultuous thoughts.
When he returned to the hotel late in the evening, he found Barty sitting in front of his room door. They stared at each other for a moment.
“Evan told me what happened” Barty began.
“I bet he did” Regulus was still angry with Rosier.
Barty snorted loudly “You don’t like him”
“I haven’t even been twenty-four hours” Regulus tried to defend himself against the accusation.
“Nonsense, he told me that ever since you were children you turned away from him”
“That grudge says more about him than about me” Regulus sneered “You know I never cared about the relatives here”
“Exactly” Barty raised her voice. Sighing, he pointed to the bedroom door. “Let's go inside. We need to talk"
"It's already late," Regulus opened the door slowly, not wanting Barty to enter, but he was pushed by Barty who entered the room anyway. There was an uncomfortable silence that Regulus decided to break: "He's perfect, and he's completely in love with you. Is that what you wanted to hear?"
"So why don't you like him?"
"I never said that," Regulus sat on the bed tired, taking off his shoes. "Did he tell you he trapped us inside an elevator? You know how I feel about confined spaces."
"He feels really sorry about that," Barty defended his fiancé.
"He's perfect, I've said that already," Regulus accepted it as he roamed the streets. However, as convinced as he was, he refused to give up on his plan. The feeling that there was something unresolved between him and Barty persisted.
“Yes, he is perfect. How could I be with someone like that” Barty said while looking at the city through the window “He has many other qualities”
Regulus rolled his eyes at the sentimentality that would follow. “Like?”
“When I hug him in public, I don't have to let him go immediately. He lets me hug him, kiss him for as long as I want.”
Regulus cringed at the comment. It was cruel for Barty to bring that up. He had problems with physical affection since childhood, instead of hugging his parents, they would hit him. A raised hand towards him was never a good thing. When they started dating, he always shrank from any touch from his boyfriend. It took a few months to get used to it, but there were still other issues that prevented him from showing affection in public. The traumas of the Black family.
Barty turned to Regulus, noticing the discomfort in his expression. “Sorry, Reg. I didn’t mean to…”
“It’s nothing,” Regulus muttered, trying to hide his discomfort. “I guess I’m just not like … You’re right to want someone like him.”
“Still, it was cruel”
“It doesn’t matter” Regulus pretended to be overcome “I’ve changed, by the way, I’m different now”
"Really?" Barty asked and Regulus nodded in agreement: “Good. Was this because of some boyfriend?”
“Maybe” Regulus replied, analyzing Barty’s reaction.
"Serious?"
“Would you mind if it was?”
Barty looked at him too “Maybe”
With that, Barty left the room, leaving Regulus alone with the triumphal feeling from the last comment. Closing his eyes, Regulus reflected on the complexity of relationships and how his past never failed to cast a shadow over the present.
The next day, breakfast was uncomfortable. Evan apologized as soon as he saw Regulus come out of the elevator, and Regulus, thinking of Barty, reassured him, saying everything was fine. At the breakfast table, he found August and Esmeralda Rosier, Evan's parents and cousins to his mother.
August Rosier was the male version of his sister, Druella Rosier, Regulus's alcoholic aunt and mother of Narcissa, Andromeda, and Bellatrix. The Rosier family was known for owning one of the most famous wine brands in Europe. Additionally, they owned a French television network.
Seeing them, Regulus was reminded of his mother, Walburga Black, who never hid her aversion to the Rosiers. When their name came up, she poured her contempt with cruel eloquence."Ridiculous nouveau riches with their ill-gotten wealth and useless political influence," was how she routinely referred to them, expressing her profound disgust. During Regulus and Sirius's childhood, while spending a summer in Lyon at Aunt Druella's house, Walburga made sure to instill a negative perspective on the Rosiers and wanted her children to avoid any closer contact.
One afternoon, playing in the garden of his aunt's house, Walburga gathered Regulus and Sirius for a serious conversation. With a cutting gaze and a stern tone, she issued a warning about Esmeralda Rosier, portraying her as a crazy woman obsessed with the Blacks. Walburga insisted that the boys should stay away from her at all costs. "Esmeralda is a predator seeking prestige and status. Do not let her get close to you. The Rosiers do not have the noble and pure lineage of the Blacks, and you must never forget that," Walburga instructed, instilling her children with the idea of superiority.
As for August, the patriarch of the Rosier family, Walburga was no less cruel in her words. She painted a picture of a subservient, miserable man who lived to satisfy his wife's whims. "He is weak, a servant to the woman. Do not follow the example of that man. The Blacks never bow to anyone," she declared, reinforcing the idea that the Black lineage was superior and untouchable. A total hypocrisy when in the end, they are all relatives.
But some lessons are hard to forget, and even after many years in the shadow of those words, it still loomed over him, making the breakfast encounter a strange gathering. Esmeralda cast strange looks in his direction, making Regulus feel uncomfortable.
"I hope you're enjoying your stay in our city," said August with a smile oblivious to the weather.
"It's always a pleasure to visit France," replied Regulus, ignoring Mrs Rosier's analytical gaze.
“The last time you came, how old were you? sixteen years?"
"I think so"
“It was right after his brother was kicked out of the house, dear” Esmeralda comments with false subtlety “A scandal”
"Maman!" Evan exclaimed, getting his mother's attention. And it was at that moment that Barty joined them at the table, sitting between Evan and Regulus.
“Hey baby” Barty kissed Evan “Hey Reggie” he kissed Regulus on the cheek.
“So, what are the plans for today?” Mr. Rosier asked
“I have a meeting in forty minutes with the newspaper team” Barty replied
“I thought Regulus could come with me to look at how the wedding arrangements are going. We could meet later for lunch.”
“Oh” Regulus exclaimed at the invitation, he had planned to spend the day with Barty “Actually, I was thinking about going with Barty to the station.” Which attracted the attention of everyone at the table when he finished speaking.
"Why?" Mrs Rosier asked suspiciously.
“My friend is working on a story of sexual harassment in the media” Regulus replied without stuttering. “Pettigrew, do you remember him?” He asked Barty, who frowned but quickly dismissed it.
“Of course” Barty agreed and turned towards the groom “We can meet you at Luigi’s, what do you think?”
Evan looked between the two “Sure”
At the farewell in the hotel garage, Regulus had to endure five minutes of Evan and Barty's public display of affection. Irritated, he rolled his eyes, and when he looked to the side, he saw Pandora Rosier watching him. He smiled, waving at her, which made her narrow her eyes and give a brief nod. "Damn," he whispered.
Once in the car, Barty asked “So, where are you going?”
“To the station with you” Regulus replied without understanding. “You didn’t really expect me to go see flower arranging, right?”
“Instead, would you rather spend two hours waiting for my meeting to end?” Barty asked, smiling.
"Is it going to take that long?"
“I don’t know, but it’s usually no more than two hours”
"Damn"
A meeting lasted an hour. During that time, he called Sirius to tell him about the breakfast with the Rosiers and had to endure his brother mocking him for breaking mom's rules and fraternizing with the enemy. Sirius also told him the results of yesterday's test. A boy. Sirius and Remus are going to have a son. Regulus stood in the middle of the broadcasting station corridor with tears in his eyes, listening to Sirius happily sharing the news. That's when Barty found him.
"What happened?" Barty asked worriedly.
Regulus shook his head in denial “I'm going to have to hang up now Sirius, I'll talk to you later” then he told Barty “It's a boy, Sirius and Remus are going to have a son” Regulus said smiling, throwing himself at Barty for a hug.
Barty wrapped Regulus in a tight hug, happy with the news and surprised by his friend's attitude. "That's amazing, Reg. A boy, huh? Looks like your brother has really come into his own."
Regulus nodded. He pulled away from the hug slowly, gazing intensely at Barty, who looked back at him the same way. Chemistry. They snapped out of the moment when a noise came from one of the doors in the corridor. "Yeah, it's... great news. I'm happy for them."
“Yeah… right” Barty was bewildered “So where do you want to go? We still have two hours before lunch.”
“I'm all yours to take me wherever you want” Regulus with a slightly deeper voice.
Barty first furrowed his brow and then blushed. "Alright."
Twenty minutes later, they were in a bar near the Musée d'Orsay, Regulus's favorite. The first time Black took his friend there, Barty was so bored that they left the museum halfway through the visit and went for a drink, discovering the bar.
"You were surprised by the news, weren't you?" Barty asked him.
"I fell down the stairs."
"Really?" Barty widened his eyes, laughing. "So that's the noise," he laughed and then became serious. "He really feels bad about the elevator incident."
“It’s okay, there was no way he could have known” Regulus looked at Barty questioning what he could have told his fiancé.
“These are your secrets, I would never tell. He’s a good guy, give him an honest chance.”
Regulus rolled his eyes, “I’m trying. He seems very in love with you, giving up his life to follow you around.”
"What do you mean?"
"From what he said, your honeymoon is going to last over a month, with him following you in the tournaments. And his work here? Is he going to put his career on hold to follow you in this stupid job?"
“Oi” Barty protested irritably
“Let’s agree that it’s not a mature job, and besides, he’s a lawyer”
“He never bothered with my work, nor have you.”
“I know” Regulus said “Probably because of his inner child who is delighted to participate in this universe”
"What are you talking about?"
"It doesn't matter. Furthermore, his father owns a television station, how long do you think it will take for them to offer a directorship at the sports channel? An office, a suit, a fixed address in Paris, close enough to his family.”
“Hmm, no” Barty immediately denied “Evan knows I hate this life, he wouldn’t ask that”
Regulus sensed the firmness in Barty's voice and reconsidered his observation. Perhaps he was being overly cynical, viewing Evan's situation from a perspective distorted by his own worldview. But he had found a potential issue he intended to explore. "You're right," Regulus admitted. "Maybe I'm being a bit... overly suspicious."
His plan unfolded after lunch when Regulus found himself alone with Evan again. They had gone shopping at a mall, exploring chic boutiques and charming cafes. As they strolled, Regulus decided to address a topic that had been intriguing his mind since their earlier conversation.
"Can I ask you something, Evan?" Regulus casually inquired as they admired the storefronts.
"Of course, Reg," Evan replied, smiling.
Regulus hesitated for a moment, choosing his words carefully. "Have you ever thought about asking your father to offer Barty a job?"
"Why?" Evan looked at him confused “He loves his job”
"Of course, but following tournaments isn't exactly the life of a responsible adult man, rootless, lonely, with bad food and no routine. And last time I heard, even the salary was poor," Regulus said it all casually. "And professionally, his segments last thirty seconds on air, hidden away in various tabs on the website. If you didn't ask, would he give up everything to manage a department in your father's channel?"
Evan was suspicious, but ended up admitting that he had this thought “Actually, my dad and I have talked about this.”
“I'm not surprised”
“But do you think Barty would accept it?”
“Of course” Regulus confirmed “Talk to your father again, and then present the proposal to Barty, a vacancy for at least the next six months”
“Barty will be suspicious”
“Maybe, but if it’s your request, he won’t refuse”
Evan considered Regulus' words, realizing the logic behind the suggestion. "Do you really think this could work? I mean, I don't want to force Barty to do something he doesn't want to do."
Regulus shrugged, keeping a neutral expression. "Just present it as an opportunity. Tell him that your father is impressed with his work and believes he could contribute significantly to the sports channel. If Barty feels it's a genuine choice and not an imposition, he might consider it."
Evan nodded, beginning to see Regulus' plan as a way to provide stability that Barty could appreciate. "I'll talk to my dad about it. But, Reg, why are you so interested in this?"
Regulus pondered for a moment before responding. "I just want the best for Barty. If he's happy, so am I."
Regulus's plan was to highlight the differences in Barty and Evan's lives, emphasizing the lifestyles each led. By creating conflict and suggesting to Evan that he offer Barty the opportunity for a more stable and conventional job at the broadcasting station, which Regulus knew Barty despised. Moreover, Black hoped this situation could reveal Evan's true intentions regarding Barty, especially regarding commitment to the relationship and willingness to accommodate his partner's needs and desires.
To Regulus's surprise, Evan brought up the topic during dinner. The three of them were sitting at a table when Rosier broached the subject. "My father asked me for a favor," he began. "He's reorganizing the directorates of the network and needs help in the sports section." Barty scoffed disbelievingly. "It would be a maximum of six months."
Barty shook his head in disbelief, then looked at Regulus. “Did you already know that?”
“You should listen to him. It’s his life too.”
“So let’s be honest here” Barty’s tone became harsher “Why don’t you admit it was your idea?” he asked Evan.
“I'm being honest” Evan raised his voice “I have the most stable job here, but I'm the only one giving up on things in this relationship”
“Is that what you think?” Barty asked offended “At least you’re admitting it before it’s too late”
"What you mean?"
"What do you expect of me? Yes, my job pays poorly, I travel all the time, but I love it. And you knew that from the beginning.”
"I know but…"
“Isn’t that good enough for you? My job? Me?"
“I never said that” Evan said desperately
"Was this an ambush? Did you wait until two days before the wedding to ask me this, just so I wouldn't have any other choice but to accept? To make me look like the jerk in the story?" Barty stood up, irritated, leaving the restaurant.
“No, no, no” Evan went after him, followed by Regulus “I'm sorry. You’re right, we had already discussed this, I don’t want you to give up your job for me or anyone else.”
Regulus, who was witnessing the entire argument, was shocked. He believed his plan would work; Barty was ready to give up on the marriage. However, Regulus didn't expect Rosier to backtrack and abandon the idea so quickly. How weak.
“I’m sorry, I’m sorry” Evan asked desperately
Barty softened his expression and pulled Rosier into a hug. "It's okay," he whispered repeatedly in Evan's ear. "I'm sorry too." He apologized, looking into Evan's eyes and planting several kisses on his face.
Regulus observed the scene perplexed, seeing his plan crumble before his eyes. Realizing that his strategy hadn't produced the desired effect and, instead, resulted in a display of vulnerability from Evan, Regulus began to reconsider his approaches. It was evident that the relationship between Evan and Barty had nuances and dynamics he hadn't fully understood.
He decided that, instead of trying to force situations and create artificial conflicts, he would need to approach the relationship more subtly and understandingly. Maybe, instead of trying to break them apart, he should seek a better understanding of the dynamics of their love and find out if there was something more underlying that could impact their relationship. The scene at the restaurant left Regulus feeling uneasy but also with a new perspective on what was at stake.
Alone in the hotel room and with a bottle of whiskey he made a list of several possible other plans. At first he was cautious with the ideas but by the end he was already planning to kidnap Barty before the wedding. But for that he needed help and he called Lupine in the middle of the night, or at least he imagined it was Lupine. “Remus you idiot, I need help. Barty can't marry this crying blond. I am the perfect man for him. Help me” he said desperately on the phone.
Regulus didn't remember that call the next morning when he woke up to someone knocking desperately on his door. With a strong hangover he went to answer the door irritated “What is it?”
To his surprise, James Potter stood at the door. "You look terrible."
Regulus tried to straighten his clothes and hair. “What are you doing here?”
James walked past him, into the room “You called me”
“No, I didn’t”
"Yes, you did. In the middle of the night, crying for help," Potter glanced around the room, judging the state with various empty bottles and potato chip bags on the floor.
Regulus was embarrassed and tried to remember the call “You’re lying”
“I didn’t even know you had my number”
“Sirius gave it to me in case of emergency” Regulus looked away
“I think this is a case of emergency” James pointed to the mess around the room “Why don’t you tell me what happened while we clean this up?”
“There are maids for that, and I don’t need their help” Regulus replied irritably.
James Potter crossed his arms, looking at Regulus with a skeptical look. "If you don't need help, why the hell did you call me in the middle of the night?" He questioned, ignoring Regulus' irritated tone.
Regulus, still trying to remember the supposed call, scratched his head and snorted. "I... I don't know, I don't remember calling you."
"Well, someone called, and you look like a mess. Now, what's going on?" James insisted.
Regulus hesitated for a moment before finally relenting. "Okay, things are a little complicated with Barty and his fiancé. I... had a few ideas, maybe not all of them so bright, and it looks like I made a call to you in the midst of my desperation."
James let out a laugh, watching Regulus with amusement. "You really suck at dealing with problems, don't you?"
"None of your business," Regulus replied with a growl.
"Well, if you need help sorting this out, I'll be here until tomorrow," James said, ignoring Regulus' look of disdain towards his offer of help.
Sighing, Regulus sat on the bed, telling James everything he thought about Evan Rosier. How beautiful, sensitive, helpful, loved, and selfless he was, but also how poisonous, deceitful, fake, and arrogant. That Barty deserved better. That Regulus could make Barty happy.
"It's better for him to suffer now than in the future after giving up his entire life for Barty," Regulus commented on Rosier. "One day he'll thank me."
"You like him," James laughed as he realized that.
"He's so... cute, it disgusts me."
James sat next to Regulus pulling his face to look at him “Reg, do you really love Barty or has this all become a competition for you? Be honest."
"He was the first person I..." Regulus remembered his unrequited love for James, realizing the irony of having the Potter by his side now. "I loved him, and he loved me back. We had plans. It was just a matter of time. He was mine. He is mine," Regulus threw himself on the bed. "When we're together, everything is so perfect. Why didn't we realize it before?" He mused.
James lay down beside him, still looking at his face. "You're a jealous little shit," he said with a smile, making Regulus smile too.
"You know, I don't like you much, but I would never wish this upon you," Regulus confessed. "To love someone and not be able to be with that person."
James averted his gaze. "You should tell him," he sighed. "That you love him. That you've loved him all this time but weren't ready." Tears streamed down Regulus's eyes as he heard those words.
"Why are you telling me this?"
“Because it’s true, right?” James asked him affectionately. “That even though this moment is the cruelest for you to admit this to him, at least he will have a choice too, closure.”
Regulus's process of getting over someone involved listing all the bad things about that person and hating them. It was like that with his parents, friends, and boyfriends. It was like that with Potter. For Regulus to stop being in love with him, he learned to hate. Hate his eyes, his hair, his abs, his laugh. Potter was an idiot. A karma in Regulus's life because despite everything, Black still saw Potter at least twice a week. He saw James fall in love, get married, have children, and get divorced. He saw him grow, mature. Regulus hated him.
After the deep conversation in bed, he decided to be honest with Barty about his feelings, following Potter's advice. When he went down to accompany James on his way out of the hotel, he ended up finding Evan and Barty at the counter.
"Oh, hello," Evan greeted them. "I'm Evan Rosier," introducing himself to James.
"Wow. Regulus told me you were handsome, but I didn't imagine it was this much," James blinked, enchanted by Evan. "I'm James Potter."
Regulus frowned at that interaction. "James, this is Barty, my best friend, and his fiancé whom you've already met," Regulus emphasized the word fiancé. It was at this moment that an idea crossed his mind.
"Hey, man," Barty greeted him, looking between Regulus and James. "Hope you guys don't mind me bringing a date," Regulus asked Barty and Evan.
"A date?" James looked confused at Regulus.
"Of course not," Evan replied, while Barty stared at James.
“I know you” he remembered “You were on the Gryffindor team at Hogwarts, weren't you?” Barty laughed, turning to Regulus. “Are you fucking your brother’s best friend?”
Time to start the new plan. "Yes, we are dating," Regulus admitted, looking at Barty.
James was shocked by the lie. His first reaction was to laugh, but he managed to contain himself and agreed, pulling Regulus by the waist, kissing his cheek.
Barty looked at Regulus with an unreadable expression, processing the information. "Well, that's...interesting," he commented, before turning to James. "How did this happen?"
Regulus smiled, keeping up the lie with a convincing expression. "It happened when we least expected it. The heart has things like that, doesn't it, James?" He winked at James, who was still holding him around the waist.
James, keeping up the joke, replied: "Exactly! Sometimes fate plays tricks on us. Regulus and I met again and discovered a lot in common."
Barty continued to look between the two, her mind clearly trying to comprehend the situation. Evan, in turn, just watched confused. Barty, still processing the news, shook her head. "Well, I didn't expect that, but if you're happy, that's what matters."
Evan, sensing the tension in the conversation, tried to change the subject. "Do you guys want to join us for breakfast? Today is going to be a busy day; we have to try on the suits again, have the rehearsal in the afternoon, and there's still the bachelor party at night."
James whistled, "Busy schedule."
During breakfast, the dynamic between the four of them was awkward. Evan attempted to keep the conversation light, discussing the day's plans and the final details of the wedding. James, still playing along with Regulus's game, made casual comments and agreed with Regulus. Barty, however, was quieter. He glanced at Regulus from time to time, as if trying to understand the truth behind the surprising revelation. Regulus, in turn, was determined to maintain the facade of the fake relationship.
After breakfast, the group split for the day's activities. Regulus nudged James to go with Evan, and Regulus went with Barty for the final suit fitting. Back together in the same studio, Barty broke the awkward silence. "When did this happen?"
"Six months ago."
Barty nodded. "How did I never know that? I'm your best friend"
Regulus stared at him, his eyes filled with sadness. "Sometimes, when we spend too much time with someone, we learn to love every part of them. We've known each other for a long time, you and I, and the truth, Barty, is that..." As Regulus spoke, he approached Barty.
“Is everything ok with the suit?” Pandora appears on time
“Yes, no problem” Barty replied, moving away from Regulus. When she left, Barty turned to her friend again: “I need a favor.” He then handed a box to Regulus “I want you to guard this with your life” It was the rings.
Regulus accepted the box with the rings, his heart sinking with the sense of rejection in the air. He swallowed hard, feeling a lump forming in his throat as he struggled to maintain his composure in the situation.
"Of course, Barty," said Regulus, forcing a smile as he held up the box. "I will take care of it as if it were the most precious treasure."
Barty nodded, looking relieved to have passed the responsibility to Regulus. "Thanks, Reg. I trust you."
Regulus tried hard to hide his disappointment, knowing he needed to stay calm and act like everything was fine. "I'll always be here for you, Barty. Anything you need."
With a nod, Barty walked away to join Pandora, leaving Regulus alone with the rings and his tumultuous thoughts. He took a deep breath, trying to push away the conflicting emotions consuming him as he put away the box carefully, determined to fulfill his friend's request, even if it meant enduring the pain of his own broken heart.
"Are you ok?" James appeared behind him asking. Regulus nodded, even though his eyes glistened with tears. James pulled him into his chest, hugging him. “What crazy idea did you have?”
“It made sense at the time” Regulus whined with his face hidden.
“Oh” Barty came back into the room “Am I interrupting?”
Regulus turned away from James and turned his back to Barty to wipe his tears.
"Okay dude?" James replied.
“We are leaving for rehearsal. Let's go?"
On the way to the rehearsal, the tension in the air was palpable in the car carrying James, Regulus, and Barty. James, sensing Regulus's melancholy, tried to distract him with light conversation and jokes, but he still seemed distant. Once they arrived at the venue, Barty introduced Potter to the groom's family, who were quite receptive, including Pandora, who always looked serious when looking at Regulus. Trying to stay useful, Regulus offered to help with anything needed.
“He’s a nice guy” James commented as soon as he managed to walk away with Regulus
"Who?"
“Evan” James replied, making Regulus roll his eyes. “You know, you guys look a lot alike.”
"What?" Regulus felt offended
James shrugged. “He's everything you try to hide.” Regulus frowned at the response "Evan is open, emotional, expresses his feelings while you usually hide it under this cold and reserved facade", James explained.
Regulus pondered James's words as they continued through the rehearsal venue. He wasn't used to hearing such insightful observations about his personality, especially from someone who wasn't part of his closest circle. During the rehearsal, Regulus watched the scene with a lump in his throat. Barty and Evan were so involved in the preparations that they barely noticed Regulus's discomfort. James, on the other hand, stood by Regulus's side, sharing meaningful looks that conveyed a mix of empathy and understanding.
At lunch, Regulus became the target of gossip. Sitting at the table with Evan's family, he noticed curious glances and discreet whispers among the other guests. Questions about his relationship with James were thrown his way, creating an atmosphere of curiosity that Regulus wasn't used to facing. The questions ranged from details about when the relationship started to how he and James met. The curiosity seemed to extend even to Sirius's reaction, Regulus's brother, to this new development. Regulus tried to answer evasively, maintaining a reserved posture. He wasn't willing to disclose too many details, especially considering the false narrative he had created about his relationship with James. However, it was hard to escape speculations and indiscreet curiosity.
Barty, noticing Regulus's uncomfortable situation, tried to intervene. "You don't need to ask so many questions. The important thing is that Regulus is happy, right, Reggie?" He smiled at Regulus, trying to dissipate the pressure of the moment. Regulus nodded, silently thanking Barty for his support.
“Now I must confess that I was worried about you,” Evan commented, sitting in front of Regulus.
"With me?"
“Relationships that never lasted more than a month, many guys coming and going. Barty mentioned to me how you were losing hope of finding the right guy. But it looks like you found it.” Evan smiled gently at Regulus. “And all this time he was right in front of you.”
Regulus glared at Barty, but heard James say next to him, “He’s talking about me, honey.”
Regulus, surprised by Evan's comment, thanked him with a slight nod of his head. Although Rosier's comment made him feel uncomfortable, he realized that, in some way, Evan was trying to build a bridge between them. However, the atmosphere was still uncomfortable for Regulus.
Evan, once again, tried to divert the focus of the conversation. "Does anyone want dessert?"
Barty supported the groom by changing the focus of the conversation "Let's talk about something more fun, guys. How are the final preparations going for the bachelor party?"
At some point, listening to the party plans for later, James became distracted by the music playing in the restaurant, starting to hum softly. Regulus beside him, listening to what was happening, looked at him confused, but James took the opportunity to sing to him softly.
“I say a little prayer for you..forever, forever, forever’ ever..you'll stay in my heart and I will love you” James' voice rose with the song's chorus.
Regulus could hardly believe what was happening there. Potter serenading in the midst of lunch. While he was enchanted, he felt a twinge of embarrassment at being the center of attention, especially when he noticed that Barty was watching him with a confused expression.
As the music continued, Barty, noting the closeness between Regulus and James, began to feel a twinge of jealousy. The captivating melody seemed to intensify the emotions in the room, and despite others looking surprised at them, they soon started to smile and joined in the music. Evan and Pandora, in particular, showed enthusiasm and sang along with the chorus.
Say you love me true,
This is my prayer, baby
I'm in love with you
As the music came to an end, Regulus discreetly glanced at Barty, sensing the tension on his face. Feeling embarrassed for having been carried away by the music and James's presence, he lowered his gaze, avoiding eye contact with Barty to avoid a confrontation. The atmosphere at the table subtly shifted, and Regulus found himself torn between the joy of being with James and concern for Barty's feelings. He knew he needed to address this situation sensitively, but at the moment, he was lost in a whirlwind of emotions.
Regulus paced back and forth in the hotel room, restless and frustrated. His plan to win over Barty was crumbling before his eyes. Anxiety consumed him as he mentally reviewed all the possibilities and obstacles he had encountered.
"This won't work," Regulus murmured to himself, the words escaping his lips with a mix of despair and discouragement. "The wedding is tomorrow, and I've barely managed to be alone with him. James won't agree to try to seduce Evan, and even if he did, I'm not sure it would be fair to him."
Regulus sat on the edge of the bed, running his hands through his hair in a gesture of frustration. He knew he needed to find a quick solution, but his mind was filled with worries and uncertainties. Time was running out, and he had no alternative plan.
A sigh escaped Regulus's lips as he tried to calm his thoughts and find an exit from the complicated situation he was in. He knew he couldn't give up now, but he also needed to be realistic about his chances of success.
With renewed determination, Regulus began to think about new strategies, seeking a way to overcome the obstacles that had arisen. He was determined to find a solution, even if it meant improvising at the last minute.
The moment came two hours later when Barty showed up at his door. “Your boyfriend was kidnapped by Pandora, apparently he understands marriage”
“He had experience with wedding. Do you want to come in?”
Barty denied the request: “I didn’t know he was married. In fact, I came to invite you to take a walk with me.”
Regulus nodded and quickly returned to his room to get his things. As they walked around the hotel, Barty started talking about their relationship.
"Regulus, what's all this about you dating Potter? Be honest with me, as far as I know you hated it, I remembered that, earlier."
Regulus sighed, realizing he could no longer avoid the conversation. "It's complicated. It was part of a foolish plan I was trying to... for what? I don't know. I didn't want to lie to you. You deserve better than this."
Barty looked at Regulus, her eyes revealing a mixture of emotions. "So, you're not dating James?"
Regulus shook his head. "No, I'm not. I just didn't want to have to be alone at your wedding."
Barty stopped and looked straight into Regulus' eyes. "You wouldn't be alone, I'm here"
“Yes, you and your fiancé, who are completely in love,” Regulus said sarcastically, but then he nodded sincerely. "I promise to be more honest from now on."
By late afternoon, Regulus and Barty found themselves on a tourist sightseeing boat, in the background they could hear the tour guide explaining things to the group. However, away from them, the two settled at the back of the boat, facing an initial moment of awkward silence. The calm water of the location reflected the lights of the late afternoon, creating a serene atmosphere.
Breaking the silence with a smile, Barty said, "This is unusual. The two of us here. My wedding is tomorrow. This is crazy." Regulus agreed, enjoying the gentle evening breeze. "I've been thinking a lot about us."
"Yes?" Regulus asked interestedly
“I thought it would be you, you know?” Barty admitted “You were… I was crazy about you. I had this idea of you being the man of my life.”
“Me too” Regulus looked at him “You, the man of mine”
Barty looked away “We were fucked uo in the beginning, weren’t we? Never admitting it… we date other people, but we never use the word love for them, right? Not even when we were together. Evan usually says he loves me every night before he goes to sleep, he says if you love someone you should tell them. Otherwise, the moment passes, and so does the opportunity."
Regulus pondered those words. The reality of what Barty was saying, and he refused to accept. Their moment had passed. They never talked about it, their feelings. After they broke up, they were too busy with the end of college and potential jobs, then there was the move, and they spent months without seeing each other.
The boat continued its course on that calm night, carrying with it the promise of a stronger and more genuine friendship. Barty suddenly smiled, "You know, I don't even have a song with Evan. Is that a bad sign?" Making Regulus laugh too.
Then suddenly Barty began to sing to Regulus:
I know a place
It's somewhere I go when I need to remember your face
We get married in our heads
Something to do while we try to recall how we met
“Why did we choose this song again?” he asked, pulling Regulus to dance.
Do you think I have forgotten?
Do you think I have forgotten
About you?
“You spent the last few weeks of the summer vacation with your mother, and I traveled with Sirius, you were afraid that when we got back things would be different,” Regulus murmured.
Dancing there with Barty, and singing the song they chose as theirs, Regulus reminisced about their relationship. The song now became a bittersweet reminder of a chapter closed in their lives, carrying with it the melody of a story that, despite its goodbyes, would continue to echo in their hearts. Barty continued singing softly, and Regulus, even while smiling, grew sadder, hugging Barty tightly.
After the emotional boat ride with Barty, Regulus returned to the hotel immersed in thoughts and memories. Upon opening the door to the room, he was greeted by a heartwarming scene: James was sitting on the bed, smiling as he spoke affectionately on the phone with Harry. Regulus leaned against the wall and listened to the end of the call.
“No, Harry. You can't paint your mom's cat. We’ve already talked about this.” The conversation made James smile towards Regulus "Just because Ron's brothers were able to paint their mouse doesn't mean you can too" James shook his head in disbelief. “Don’t listen to Uncle Pads, listen to your mother. I'm coming back tomorrow night, behave yourself until then. Byee. I love you"
The intimacy in that conversation between father and son was lovely. A relationship he always wanted with his parents. As soon as James ended the call, he noticed Regulus' silence. "Hey, how are you?" James asked, signaling him to come closer.
"I am fine. Barty took me for a walk, it was interesting," replied Regulus, trying to hide the emotions that still reverberate in his mind. Black told him about the conversation he had with his friend and about the music. James listened carefully to everything Regulus had to say, furrowing his brow a few times but not saying anything. “Aren’t you going to give me any advice this time?” Regulus asked, finding the silence strange.
"You have to get ready for us to go to the party" James changed the topic of the conversation.
Regulus, even though he found the attitude strange, agreed. "Yes, I'm going to get ready right now. I hope everything goes well."
“I’ll wait for you so we can go down together”
Regulus nodded, watching James lie down on the bed and turning on the television as he entered the bathroom. Minutes later, when he left dressed up, he found James going through the ring box. "What are you doing?"
“It's a white gold ring” James commented “A bit peculiar, don't you think?”
"You think?" Regulus asked
"Yes, gold ones are more traditional. It has an interesting taste." James examined the rings once more before looking back at Regulus. "Did you like it?"
"It's different, but it has its charm," Regulus commented, reaching out to take the ring. James handed it to him, and Regulus noted the details of the peculiar design. It appeared to have small encrustations that formed an intricate pattern around the surface.
"Are you going to try it?" James suggested, a smile playing on his lips.
Regulus, curious, slid the ring onto his finger. It seemed to fit perfectly, but the moment he tried to take it off, he realized it was stuck. The expression on his face changed from surprise to worry as he tried delicately to remove the ring but to no avail.
"James, I think it's stuck," said Regulus, starting to panic. James looked at the situation with a mix of surprise and amusement, which quickly turned to desperation.
The tension between Regulus and James increased as they both realized the ring was not willing to give in easily. Panic began to set in when, after several frustrated attempts, it became clear that the situation was out of control. The knock on the door and Evan's voice calling them to the party added an extra layer of anxiety to the moment.
Evan, oblivious to the despair unfolding in the room, continued calling them. "Boys, you're late! The party has already started, and everyone is waiting for you."
Regulus, embarrassed, quickly hid his hand and exchanged quick glances with James. With no alternative, they left the room, carrying with them the uncomfortable secret of the ring stuck on Regulus' finger.
The party was in a gay club. No surprise there. The lights were vibrant and colorful, music pulsating, and the atmosphere festive. The bachelor party was in full swing when Regulus, James, Evan, and Barty arrived. The venue was filled with laughter, dancing, and a contagious energy. Initially, everyone was having a good time, dancing, and enjoying the laid-back atmosphere of the club. The festive mood was evident, and everyone was determined to make the night memorable. Drinks flowed, and laughter echoed through the space.
However, as the night progressed and more drinks were consumed, the atmosphere began to change. Dances became more daring, laughter louder, and the dance floor turned into a display of bold and flamboyant moves. Regulus, James, Evan, and Barty, now in a state of joyful intoxication, found themselves in the center of the dance floor. Moves became uninhibited, hands moved freely, and everyone was immersed in the fun of the night.
Watching Regulus dance with contagious energy, Barty began to feel a pang of jealousy as he saw Potter rubbing against his friend. At some point, they switched partners, with James dancing with Evan and Barty dancing with Regulus. That's when the mess began. As the night progressed, Regulus and Barty distanced themselves from the rest of the group, opting to go to the bar, losing sight of Evan and James. Sitting in a corner of the bar, Barty finally decided to open his heart to Regulus, despite the complicated situation they found themselves in. Regulus listened attentively to his friend.
"I was the one who asked him to marry me, but sometimes…..Evan is amazing, but something in me is screaming ...Was it impulse? Maybe you're right and I'm making a mistake", Barty said, diverting the look as the nightclub lights flickered around them.
This was everything Regulus wanted to hear, but in the end, he was still surprised by the revelation, trying to find the right words. "Barty, you're about to get married. It's not too late to reconsider, but... you need to be sure of what you want."
Barty sighed deeply. "I love Evan, but... there's something about you, Regulus. There always has been."
The tension increased as the loud music and dazzling lights seemed to press even harder on the two. After a brief silence, Barty suggested taking a break to clear their heads. "Let's get out of here, Barty. We need some fresh air."
The two friends left the club, deciding to take a walk to clear their minds and try to better understand the swirl of emotions that hung over them on that turbulent night.
Once they were outside the club, Barty pushed Regulus against a wall and leaned in for a kiss. Yes, they were both drunk, but Regulus could swear that this was the best kiss he'd ever had. It was needy, full of repressed emotions and desires that had been hidden for too long. Regulus felt a mix of surprise and ecstasy as he responded to the kiss, letting himself be carried away by the intensity of the moment. Barty's hands got lost in Regulus's hair, deepening the connection between them.
For a brief moment, all worries and dilemmas disappeared, replaced by the urgency of that kiss. It was as if, at that moment, only Regulus and Barty existed.
“I love you” Barty whispered in the middle of the kiss
Clarity began to return as reality seeped into their minds. Still dazed by the fiery kiss, Regulus slowly pulled away, staring at Barty with a mix of confusion and surprise. "What?"
Barty, also trying to process what had just happened, looked at Regulus with eyes that mixed fear and passion. "I don't know, Reg. But….it feels right, doesn't it?"
Suddenly, Regulus felt the atmosphere getting heavier and unable to deal with the pressure of the moment, he ended up vomiting right there at Barty's feet. "Shit"
"Are you okay?" Barty asked worriedly, Regulus shook his head. “Come on, let’s take a taxi and go back to the hotel. On the way I’ll call Evan”
On the way back, they called James and Evan, who also decided to leave the club and join them at the hotel. When Regulus woke up the next morning, he found James distressed beside him in his room, reflecting on the choices of the previous night and the consequences that would follow.
“Why do you look like that?” Regulus asked hoarsely.
James sighed, running a hand through his disheveled hair. "Evan and I...kissed."
Regulus widened his eyes, surprised by the revelation. The news seemed to echo in his head as he also tried to understand why he felt angry about this information. "You... what? Why?"
James looked at Regulus with a regretful expression. "I don't know, Reg. I think we were all drunk and confused. You guys disappeared. Things got out of hand."
Regulus nodded, still processing the information. He himself didn't know how to tell James about the kiss with Barty that night.
"I don't think this wedding will happen," Regulus murmured, making James more distressed.
Breakfast was marked by a tense atmosphere, with the absence of Evan and Barty. Pandora's furious glares only increased their anxiety. James and Regulus exchanged nervous glances, still trying to understand the impact of the previous night on their lives.
"I need to find Barty and clear things up," suggested Regulus, trying to dissipate the discomfort that hung over them.
When they exited the elevator on the floor of their room, Regulus found Barty coming angrily toward him. The tension in the hallway was almost palpable, and Regulus knew that a difficult conversation was about to happen. James, next to Regulus, was visibly uncomfortable but decided to stay by his side to face the consequences together.
"Barty, we need to talk," Regulus began, trying to diffuse the situation.
Barty came forward punching James: "Talk? Stay away from my fiancé, damn it."
Regulus widened his eyes in confusion “What?”
James tried to explain: "It didn't mean anything, it was a confusing moment, Barty. We were all... drunk."
Barty shook his head, clearly frustrated. "Drunks? You ruined my wedding!"
"I know. I know," Regulus admitted, looking into Barty's eyes. "But we need to resolve this. We can talk, try to understand."
Barty's expression wavered between anger and sadness. "I don't want to understand, Regulus. You guys ruined everything." Barty took a deep breath “Where’s the ring?”
“Barty” Regulus called, his voice breaking. “Shall we talk, please?”
“The ring, Regulus”
Sniffling, Regulus showed his hand to him, where the ring was attached. Barty without thinking put her finger in her mouth and pulled the ring out with her teeth. Regulus watched as Barty removed the ring with an expression of mixed pain and desire.
"I just... I just wanted to make things right," Regulus muttered, looking away from the intensity of Barty's gaze.
Barty took a deep breath, visibly struggling to contain her emotions. "I know, Regulus. But some things can't be fixed so easily."
Regulus nodded, knowing Barty was right. He felt a lump forming in his throat, guilt weighing heavily on his heart. "I'm sorry, Barty. I really am."
James remained silent beside them, watching the interaction with a grim expression.
Barty took another deep breath, trying to calm her spirits. "I'm going back to my room"
Regulus nodded, watching Barty walk away with heavy steps. He felt a mix of guilt and sadness as he observed his friend distancing himself. When they arrived in the room, the tension was worse between him and James. That's when the door suddenly opened, revealing Pandora with a furious expression. She entered, slamming the door shut.
"Pandora, we can explain..." James began, but he was interrupted by her penetrating gaze.
"Explain? Do you think explaining will fix this?" Pandora crossed her arms, staring directly at Regulus. "I knew from the beginning that you were going to do something to ruin this marriage. I told Evan, but he didn't believe. And now here we are, on the wedding day, and everything is falling apart."
Regulus swallowed hard, feeling a weight on his chest. "Pandora, I didn't mean to..."
She didn't let him finish. "You didn't mean to? Do you think I don't know that the job idea was yours, that they fought because of it? That I didn't notice the way you look at Barty? That this guy isn't your boyfriend, and all of this was just a plan of yours. You never liked us, even as children. Always thinking you're better than everyone. Evan deserved more than this; he deserved to be happy, and you ruined everything."
James tried to intervene. "We'll fix this, Pandora. I promise."
She let out a bitter laugh. "Empty promises won't mend my brother's heart. Regulus, you'll have to fix the mess you've caused. You have until the wedding to sort this out," Pandora said before leaving the room with the same intensity she entered. "Because we can get over love, and Evan will get over it. But are you willing to lose Barty's friendship? Because, believe me, if this wedding doesn't happen, I'll make Barty hate you."
She left, leaving silence in the room, with Regulus and James facing the consequences of their actions. It was clear that the path to fixing things would be harder than they imagined.
James looked at Regulus, concern written all over his face. "What now, Reg? What are you going to do?"
Regulus sighed in frustration, "I don't know, James. I didn't expect things to come to this."
"But this is your opportunity, isn't it? This is what you wanted" James questioned, an accusatory tone evident in his voice.
"I know, but...it wasn't supposed to be like this" Regulus replied.
From the beginning, all he wanted was a chance to be alone with Barty, just like old times. Eating junk food, listening to music, planning new dreams, a life. He wanted to show Barty that, despite the changes and the time that had passed, Regulus still knew him like no one else. He wanted to prove that their connection was deeper than any recent relationship. The image of them together, sharing laughs and dreams, pulsed in his mind. Regulus wanted to reignite the flame of their passion, which had weakened over time but was never extinguished.
With that thought, Regulus took a deep breath, ready to face the challenge of opening up to Barty, of showing the truth behind his recent actions and, above all, of trying to restore what seemed lost. “I’ll talk to Barty”
“Of course you will” James scoffed.
"What is your problem?" Regulus got angry
“He hit me because I kissed his fiancé. Doesn’t that say something to you?” James questioned him “If he loves you, as you claim, why didn't he show the same jealousy when you said we were dating?”
“Because I say it was a lie”
“You're unbelievable,” James said, leaving the room upset.
“Fuck,” muttered Regulus to himself, reflecting on how out of control things had gotten. He knew he couldn't keep avoiding the truth and needed to face Barty to set the record straight.
With a heavy sigh, Regulus left the room and headed down the hall, ready to find Barty and try to repair the damage he had done. With each step, he felt his anxiety rising, but he was determined to face the situation head on.
When Barty opened the door to his room, his eyes were filled with pain and uncertainty as he looked at Regulus. “I said I wanted to be alone"
“Your wedding hasn't been canceled yet” This wasn't what Regulus planned to say, but it was the first thing that came out of his mouth. Despite this, he entered the room anyway.
"Great"
“Why are you so upset about Evan and James when you also kissed me last night?”
“Because they're not you and me”
Barty's words echoed in the room, filling the space with tense silence. Regulus watched Barty's expression change, a mix of surprise, confusion, and a touch of emotion. He knew things had become even more complicated, but he was determined to clear everything up.
"I know things are confusing, Barty," Regulus began, choosing his words carefully. "I messed everything up, and I understand that you're upset. But I can't ignore what I feel anymore."
Barty remained silent, looking directly into Regulus's eyes as if trying to decipher his sincerity.
"I didn't want this to happen like this. Not today, on your wedding day. It's untimely, but now I'm here to tell you that..." As he spoke, Regulus's hands began to sweat, his breath quickened, and his eyes teared up. "I love you, Barty. And I've loved you for the past nine years. I was just too proud to admit it."
"Reggie."
"So... I have a request to make." Regulus couldn't hold back his tears any longer. "Choose me. Marry me."
"I..." Regulus didn't let Barty finish speaking and kissed him. But unlike the previous night, this kiss lacked desire or passion; it was just a kiss.
It was then that the door opened, revealing Evan. His eyes were filled with anger as he observed the scene before him. "What the hell is going on here?"
Barty swallowed hard, feeling trapped. "Evan, I..."
But before he could finish, Evan stepped forward and slapped Regulus across the face, the impact echoing through the room. Then he looked furiously at Barty and left the room. Barty ran after him, and Regulus ran after Barty. They were all in front of the elevator. Evan pressing the buttons tries to make the elevator arrive faster and Barty tries to explain himself.
Barty was visibly shaken, trying to find the right words to clarify the situation. "Evan, I can explain, please..."
Evan didn't wait for Barty's explanation and interrupted, his voice laden with bitterness: "Explain what, Barty? That you were fooling around with your ex while I was there, feeling guilty for kissing a guy while I was drunk? There's no explanation for that."
"I love you!" Barty shouted desperately. "Believe me."
Then it hit Regulus. There was something different in the way Barty expressed that.
Regulus stood there in the hotel corridor, watching the scene unfold before him. Pain and confusion hung in the air as Evan expressed his anger, and Barty desperately tried to explain his version of events.
Barty loved Evan. Truly loved him.
So what was it that existed between Regulus and Barty? Was it love? Passion?
When the elevator arrived, Evan entered quickly, and without thinking, Regulus got in as well, pushing Barty out of the way. The doors closed, and it was just the two of them now. An enraged Evan and a Regulus who had no idea what he was doing.
"What are you doing?" Evan growled, his voice filled with bitterness.
Regulus swallowed hard, feeling like a trapped animal. "I... I just wanted... I'm sorry, I don't know what to say."
“You never liked us. Of my family. Your mother and you always looked at us with an air of superiority.”
“Not this story again”
"But it's true. The proof is you reintroducing yourself every time we meet," Evan said. "I knew this would happen, ever since Barty proposed. I had this feeling that you wouldn't let it go, as if he were something only yours. But I trusted Barty, and he trusted you."
Regulus pressed the stop button “Why trust a man who has always treated you badly?”
“My mistake” Evan glared at him “My mom calls you ‘The man you’ll never be’ compared me to you. Do you know why that is? Because she thinks Barty will never love me the way he loves you. I tried to believe that she would be wrong but….”
“She is” Regulus interrupted him “He loves you” as he admitted his voice broke “It's you he wants to marry. Whom he choose”
Evan watched Regulus closely, as if searching for any lie or trace of manipulation in his words. Regulus' words were sincere, filled with a truth that he himself needed to accept.
"I understand that this is difficult to believe," continued Regulus, his voice sounding firmer now. "But you're the one he chose, Evan. You're the love of his life, not me."
Evan looked at Regulus, his eyes showing a mix of sadness and distrust. "I want to believe you, Reg. But how can I be sure this is true?"
“Show up at the altar at the appointed time. I'm sure Barty will be there too.”
The elevator started moving again, taking them back to Barty and Evan's bedroom floor. The silence between them was tense, filled with uncertainty about what would happen next.
“I need to talk to Barty before this” Evan said getting out of the elevator
"Alright. I don't think he would want to talk to me anyway” Regulus smiled awkwardly.
“You’re going to be at the wedding, aren’t you?” Evan asked before the doors closed.
Regulus nodded, even though his heart was broken. The elevator doors closed, leaving him alone with his tumultuous emotions. He knew he still had a lot to face, including one last conversation with Barty. When the doors opened again, Regulus took a deep breath and headed towards his room, which had no sign of James. And then he cried.
When he woke up he realized that there was less than an hour until the ceremony. He lay in bed pondering whether to go or not. It was when he heard a soft knock on the door that he got up to open it thinking it might be James.
When Regulus opened the door, he did not find James, but Barty. All dressed up for the wedding. His marriage to someone else.
"Hey," Barty smiled at him softly, "we need to talk."
Regulus nodded, allowing Barty to enter. The room was filled with a depressive atmosphere.
"Aren't you supposed to be on your way to the wedding?" Regulus asked, avoiding Barty's gaze.
“Not without my best friend there” Barty joked and then sighed, running a hand through her hair. "I know you're sorry, Reg. What did you want, anyway? Why did you do that?"
Regulus sat on the edge of the bed, looking at the floor before finding the courage to respond. "I'm a selfish monster who's never willing to let go of his things. Like a weed, Barty. I cling to the roots of what's good and beautiful, but end up suffocating and destroying everything around me."
Barty looked at Regulus, surprised by the analogy, laughing. "A bit overdramatic, don't you think?" Regulus shook his head, disagreeing. "Well, let's find a way to cut all these weeds then."
Regulus nodded. "You have to go. Evan will kill me this time if you're not there."
"Only if you come with me," Barty requested, and Regulus ended up agreeing.
It was a beautiful ceremony. The sunset painted the sky with warm shades of orange and pink, creating a romantic and magical atmosphere. The last rays of daylight danced upon the ceremony venue, accentuating the flower arrangements that adorned every corner. The arrangements, a profusion of vibrant and exuberant colors, a mix of lilies and roses. The strategically hung lanterns radiated a soft light, creating a warm and romantic ambiance. As the sun bid farewell on the horizon, the lanterns took center stage, illuminating the path leading to the altar where Barty and Evan were about to exchange their vows.
Even with a broken heart, Regulus watched the ceremony unfold beside Barty. He felt every word of Barty's vows. Evan was radiant, not revealing any sign of prior conflict. His eyes met Barty's with tenderness, a silent promise of eternal love. At the end of the ceremony, Barty and Evan exchanged looks filled with promises and hope. Regulus saw the genuine smile on Barty's face and the happiness in Evan's eyes.
Regulus was ready to leave right after the ceremony, but Pandora was determined, insisting that, as the best man, he would give a speech. He tried to argue that he wasn't the best person for the job, that he wasn't prepared, and that perhaps someone closer to the couple should speak. However, Pandora was unwilling to back down, insisting that he should express his feelings and wishes to the couple.
Giving in to the pressure, Regulus reluctantly agreed. He knew he couldn't escape this responsibility and decided to do his best as the best man. However, as he headed towards the place where the speech would be given, his mind was filled with confused thoughts about what to say.
Before taking the stage, he connected his phone to one of the speakers. Then, Regulus looked at Barty and Evan, who were eagerly waiting to hear his words. With a sigh, he began to speak.
“Barty is my best friend. The person I call when I want to complain about work, when I have the idea of killing someone, when I'm crying because I saw a sad movie... Barty loves so deeply and intensely, that when he called me saying he was getting married I thought... that he would finally have the happiness he deserves. Because he deserves all the love and joy in the world. Evan, you are the person who chose to share this journey, and that says a lot about who you are.”
As he spoke, he saw Barty and Evan looking at each other with watery eyes. So he decided to break the mood “I came in such a hurry for the wedding that I didn't bring the gift” He said making everyone laugh “So, I hope you accept this song as a gift” Regulus fiddled with his cell phone, playing the song.
I know a place
It's somewhere I go when I need to remember your face
We get married in our heads
Something to do while we try to recall how we met
Do you think I have forgotten?
Do you think I have forgotten?
Do you think I have forgotten
About you?
Barty smiled at Evan, who looked at him enchanted by the music. As Barty watched Regulus, surprised by the choice of music, they both demonstrated a subtle melancholy. However, Regulus saw this moment as an opportunity to give music a new meaning, recognizing that they would never be the protagonists of this story.
You and I (don't let go) were alive (don't let go)
With nothing to do, I could lay and just look in your eyes
Wait (don't let go) and pretend (don't let go)
Hold on and hope that we'll find our way back in the end
Do you think I have forgotten?
Do you think I have forgotten?
Do you think I have forgotten
About you?
Later, sitting alone at a table, Regulus reflected on the entire situation. Barty and Evan's wedding was in full swing, and he found himself in a corner, far from the hustle and bustle of the party. Watching the guests dancing and celebrating, Regulus asked about what the future held for him. However, a feeling of loneliness enveloped him, as Barty was now officially engaged to Evan. Regulus knew he needed to move on, find his own path, but he couldn't help the sadness that hung over him in that festive moment.
“It was a beautiful speech” said a voice behind him, startling him.
“Potter” Regulus was surprised “I thought you had already returned to London”
“My flight is at midnight” James sat next to him
Regulus stared at him. James Potter is an enigma in his life. They're not friends. They can't be, Regulus has to hate him. But James is always there for him, when he needs a ride, to fix something in the apartment, or even at work. Usually because Sirius asks. But now, he doubted his brother had asked James to help in this entire situation.
"You seem thoughtful," James commented, breaking the silence between them.
Regulus sighed, deciding to be honest. "What are you doing here Potter?"
"I was invited"
“In Paris, helping me”
"You called me"
"But why? Why drop everything and come help a guy you don’t even like?”
"I like you"
Regulus raised an eyebrow, surprised by James' direct response. "This is unexpected."
James who was relaxed rather than rigid "You know, this whole situation has shown me that we shouldn't hide our feelings, if it can't be too late"
"I can attest to that."
James approached Regulus, opened his mouth and closed it. Then he walked away frustrated, then came back “Dance with me?”
Confused, Regulus accepted, and to the irony of fate – thought James, the song that was playing was " I say little prayer.”
James pulled Regulus by the waist, commanding the dance. After a few minutes of silence, he said “I’m in love with you”
Regulus stopped immediately “What?”
Swallowing hard, James continued “I've been in love with you for three years, I think I had a bit of a crush on you before, but it was after meeting you all week at Pads' house that I knew for sure”
Regulus didn't know what to say "James"
“I know this moment is not ideal, after all. But I want you to know, That’s why I came, by the way”
“What if Barty had given up, if we had stayed together?” Regulus didn't understand James' reasoning.
“Then you would be happy” James shrugged with a sincere smile “That's also love, wanting the person you love to be happy, whether it's with you or not."
"Love?" Regulus asked, scared.
“It's okay, don't freak out” James laughed “Nothing needs to happen. Let’s dance and then we’ll go home.”
"I thought you were straight," Regulus muttered, trying to gather his thoughts.
James nodded understandingly. "A common mistake. But I’m actually bi"
So that was it? Was this Regulus's future? He felt a whirlwind of emotions rushing through him as he processed James's words. He had never considered the possibility that James might have feelings for him, and now everything seemed out of place. It was as if the world had turned upside down in an instant. So they continued dancing.
In the end, when the newlyweds were ready to leave, Regulus tried to say goodbye, but with a crowd of people in front of him and around the newlyweds, he gave up. As he moved away in the opposite direction, he felt someone grab his hand. It was Barty.
"Thank you," Barty whispered, hugging him briefly.
