Regulus POV
Regulus couldn't believe James and Sirius were doing this. How could they? They were leaving him all alone. Not like his dad had left him, but they wouldn't be in school with Regulus anymore. James and Sirius were going to stupid high school and leaving poor Regulus behind in annoying middle school. Regulus wasn't stupid, he knew that once you finish eighth grade, you go to high school. But he never thought that James would have the audacity to do it without Regulus.
What would happen if James needed him? Did that ever occur to him when James was making this stupid decision? What if another kid was being mean to James and no one was there to help him? James was getting to be bigger and more muscular, but he was far from the biggest kid that would be in the high school. James was also super nice but when he got angry he sometimes made stupid decisions and pranked people, causing them to want to hit him.
Most of the time it was really funny when James and his friends pranked people, like when he did it to Snape, but when he did it to the wrong kid at school, it, more often than Regulus would like, ended with James bleeding on the ground.
But now he was leaving. And they wouldn't be in school together for another three whole years. Three! This was outrageous and completely unacceptable. The other kids at school didn't really like Regulus either but ever since the second grade when James and Sirius scared them, they hadn't been mean to him. Regulus could defend himself now but he certainly liked it better when James was there to help him.
"Hey, Reg," James said. It was the last day of summer and school was starting tomorrow, and this guy had the audacity to 'Hey Reg' him, as if he wasn't about to abandon Regulus all alone.
"Hmmf," Regulus grunted as he turned away from him.
"Reg?" He asked as if he didn't know exactly what he was doing. Regulus looked up at him with his best glare.
He was not good at being angry at James. He didn't think he had done it before and it turned out to be much more difficult than he thought it would be to be mad at Sunshine incarnate. Regulus had been angry at his mom and Sirius but never James. But he could do this. James had to know that this sort of behavior was not acceptable.
"Regulus." He frowned looking at him. Maybe James was an actual idiot. How could he be this dumb? He was supposed to be smart. He got some of the best grades in his class but somehow he was not getting this. The idiot. "What's wrong?" The stupid idiot asked.
"You're an idiot." Regulus finally responded as he crossed his arms and continued to glare at him.
"What?!" James gasped. "Why am I an idiot?"
"One, you don't know why I am mad at you, two, you are going to high school," Regulus answered.
"You're mad at me?" He said as worry flooded his face. God, Regulus was going to need to be strong.
"Of course, I am mad at you." He huffed.
"Why are you mad at me?" He asked with wide deer eyes.
"You are going to high school." He said firmly. Regulus was not going to back down "And you're an idiot."
"Why are you mad at me for going to high school," James asked.
"Because you are a stupid idiot who likes to piss people off. And when you piss people off then people hit you. And when Mark isn't around to help you, I help you. But now you are going to high school and I won't be around to help you. So you going to high school is a really stupid decision, and you shouldn't do it." He stated then added, “Idiot.”
He smiled down at him. "Oh Reg, I'll miss you too."
"What?" Regulus gasped. "I didn't say anything about missing you."
"Oh sorry, that must have been my idiotic interpretation of what you said." James laughed.
Regulus smiled at him. Crap. He was supposed to be angry at him. Regulus was really bad at being angry at James. "Hmmf." He tried to frown. "Well don't come crying to me when you break your nose again." He huffed.
"Regulus, I have to go to high school. I passed the eighth grade, there isn't anywhere else for me to go." He said.
"Couldn't you have failed a couple of classes so you could stay?" He asked.
"You know I am too smart to fail classes." He smirked.
Idiot. "No, I don't know that." He stuck her nose up. “You’re clearly an idiot.”
"Yes, you do." James laughed. "Here's the deal. How about I try to not piss people off so that people won't hit me. But if they do end up hitting me anyways, in a couple of years when you go to high school, I can point out anyone who was mean to me and you can beat them up for me."
"Hmmm," Regulus said. This seemed fair. "I'm not coming for three years." He sighed.
"I know. It's a long time. But we will still see each other all the time. I promise." James said.
"Fine," Regulus said.
"And Reg," James said.
"What?" He looked up at him.
"I'll miss you." James gave a small smile.
"Oh. I'll miss you too." Regulus smiled back at him. “Crap- why is it so mad to be mad at you?”
“I don’t know, clearly, from my once broken nose not everyone has that problem,” James laughed. “So this is clearly on you.”
“I’ll give you a second broken nose if you keep angering me,” Regulus responded with crossed arms.
“Yeah, you could do that but then you would have to beat yourself up.” James shrugged.
“Nope, I am immune to the rule,” Regulus said, “So is Remus.”
“Not Sirius?” James asked.
“No, I have no qualms about beating up my brother,” Regulus responded, “However if you managed to anger Remus enough that he punched you, you deserved it.”
“Ha,” James laughed with a bright smile, “I think that’s more than fair.”
