It is another sunset which means once more the day is ending only to repeat. It is another blue sky fading into purple which will meet the golden rays of the sun. The school is quiet and so is the breeze as it flows through the branches of the tall oak trees.
“Why won’t you pity my attempts, but you will pity Severus or Lily's advances?” Alice asks, not bothering to turn away from the sunset.
Narcissa does not reply at first, instead choosing to be quiet. She moves to hug her knees against her chest, but still no words come out. Narcissa’s stare attempts to focus on the sky, but her vision is too blurry from the tears puddling up in my eyes.
“Why won’t you pity me, Narcissa?” Alice repeats, her head turning to look at the girl next to her.
It takes Narcissa a good moment before she can muster up a reply, “You know why.”
“I am afraid I do not because it simply is like you do not know my intentions and you act as if you do not share the same ones.”
“You know why.”
“No, I do not. I do not understand how I am so different from Lily and Severus. What is wrong with me? Why do you not want me?”
“With you it would be too permanent,” Narcissa mutters, moving to sit criss-cross. The blades of grass brushing up her bare legs and scratching at old scabs and new cuts.
It is Alice’s turn to stay silent as all she can do is stare at the teenager next to her. Narcissa’s long dark hair, dark eyes with long lashes, naturally flushed cheeks and the pout that was seemingly always on her face. She looks even prettier with the sun against her face, lighting up the cracks in her lips, the fading cuts along her cheeks and the gray bags that settled so deeply below her eyes.
“I cannot pity you, Alice. I could not accept my future if you were mine,” Narcissa is still whispering as she speaks, “I love you more than life itself. I love you more than the money, more than Lucius, more than anyone. I could not stand the idea of only having you for the next few months.”
“Have me, Narcissa,” Alice pauses before placing her hand on top of Narcissa’s, “Let these be the best months of our lives, let me hold you, let me kiss you, let me be yours. I promise you all of it.”
Narcissa’s fingers interlock with Alice’s.
“I promise myself to you forever, no one else will ever touch my heart like you have,” Alice continues, lifting Narcissa’s hands up to her lips, placing a soft kiss on top.
“No one else?” Narcissa questions. Her eyes soften and the pout on her face slowly melts into a faint smile.
“I am devoted only to you. If we could, I would have spent the rest of my life with you.”
Alice lets go of Narcissa’s hand, delicately placing it down against the grass. Narcissa looks over at the girl immediately, her eyebrows knitted together in a tight manner and wrinkles appearing across her forehead. The pout that Narcissa owned was back on her face, but nothing erased the red burning up in her face.
That is when Alice reached her hand to Narcissa’s face. For a moment her hand hovers above Narcissa’s cheek, but then Narcissa wraps her hand around Alice’s, pressing her palms into her cheek.
“How will you remember me?” Narcissa asks. As Alice runs her finger across Narcissa’s lips, the corners of Narcissa's mouth create a gentle smile and her lips slightly part.
“Your glossy lips, your soft, high-pitched voice, the way you laugh at the worst times, whenever you trip you look around to make sure no one say, the way you smack my arm whenever something makes you laugh just to make sure I heard it, the smile you get when describing your books to me,,” Alice describes. A smile matching Narcissa’s appears on her face.
Narcissa gulps before her next request, “Will you kiss me?”
Narcissa does not get an answer before Alice brings her lips to Narcissa’s. Their lips touch for barely a second, the taste of strawberry lip gloss lingers on Alice’s lips as she pulls away. Narcissa looks up at the taller girl with a look that can only be described as desperate…hungry, but Alice returns to her position from earlier. Alice’s eyes towards the sky and her legs stretched out against the grass.
“You promised me all of it,” Narcissa says. She does not think as she stands up, looking over Alice.
Alice does not move or even say anything, just look at the other girl. Then Narcissa lowers her body onto Alice’s wrapping her legs around her waist and arms around Alice’s neck.
Eventually Alice’s arms begin to settle around Narcissa’s waist.
“Hold me, kiss me, be mine,” Narcissa demands in a hushed voice.
Alice listens. The girls' lips meet once more. It seems time stops and the oxygen loses its meaning, the once gentle kiss becomes something more intense, something more needed. At first their lips are rough against each other's, raw and untamed. Their teeth graze against each other's lips and their tongues engaged in a battle. Breathing becomes ragged. Narcissa pulls Alice's hair back. Alice cannot control the soft moan that leaves her lips, but it does get cut off when Narcissa presses her lips against hers again.
This time it is different though. Their mouths melt together and there is no need to win. It is tender. Their lips melt into each other. Naturally their lips separate once more and air becomes a concern.
Moments pass of no words being exchanged, but Narcissa does not move. Her legs stay wrapped around Alice’s waist and her arms might as well be glued to the sides of the girl’s neck. Alice’s hands remain holding Narcissa’s waist.
“Someone, I tell you, in another time will remember us,” Narcissa whispers into Alice’s ear.
