Obstacles
Summary
James Potter had pitied him ever since he first saw him entering the train to Hogwarts. With his greasy, black hair, and a bloodied face that had attracted almost everyones attention. He pitied how his voice had a slight accent, one of a foreigner’s. His tattered clothing draping over his skinny body, with obvious holes in them. Yes, James pitied Severus Snape.*inspired by ‘The Snivellus Manifesto’*

2.

The skinny, bruised, greasy haired boy stepped up from the crowd. Severus. Severus. Severus. His name felt like a tongue twister to James. From high up on the podium, James could really see how bruised his face was. He had a black eye, and dried up blood, probably originating from his hooked nose.

The boy sat down, and whispered something. The hat took longer this time, unlike the others, it had taken about three minutes for it to decide. “Slytherin!” Of course he would get into the Evil house, what else would be expected from him? With that greasy hair, and that permanent scowl on his bloodied face.

”Potter, James.” It was his turn! Finally! James was so excited, he gleefully sat down in the wooden chair. The Sorting hat was placed on his head, and he heard a deep voice inside his head. “Courageous…Brave…my, you are quite a sort for…” Brave? Had the hat just called him brave? ”Gryffindor!” Yes! Yes! Yes! The house of his dreams! With the girl of his dreams!

Now his friends just had to join him, oh how he hoped for that! “Black, Sirius.” Sirius stepped up, his brows furrowing in nervousness. “You seem like the type for…” Oh Merlin, please say Gryffindor! “Gryffindor!” Sirius ran up to James, while the crowd muttered.

”A Black? In Gryffindor?” James heard next to him, apparently, Sirius’ family consisted of former members of Slytherin. “James! We’re together!” Sirius spoke, smiling ear to ear. “Now we just have to wait for Remus and Peter!” James said, watching as McGonagall spoke a few more names.

”Lupin, Remus.” Remus walked up the stage, and the hat was placed. “Gryffindor!” Remus sat down beside Sirius, settling his bag next to his side. “Pettigrew, Peter.” And up walked Peter, and he was Gryffindor too! “We’re all together, how crazy is that?” Peter asked, and Remus sighed.

“I’m just happy I’m not in Ravenclaw.” He smiled in relief. “Me too, I’m the first Black in Gryffindor! I’ll make history!” Sirius giggled. James looked at the red haired girl with the name of Lily. She was looking at something behind him. James looked back, and saw the boy with the bruised face.

Lily looked worried, James wondered why. “Hi,” James said, sticking out his hand to shake. “I’m James Potter, what’s your name?” He asked, Lily rolled her eyes. “I’m Lily Evans, you know that Professor McGonagall already said our names, right?” She stated, as if it was obvious.

“True, but I wanted to make a formal greeting.” James said, taking his hand back, because Lily still hadn’t taken it. “Alright, well hello James Potter.” Lily said, and James smiled. “Hello, Lily Evans.” James said, and he looked back at the boy. “Why are you looking at that boy in Slytherin?” James asked, and Lily looked offended.

“Because, that boy is my friend.” Lily clarified, but James wondered; Why would a Gryffindor be friends with a Slytherin? It didn’t make any sense! “Why?” James asked, scoffing. “Because, I don’t need a reason.” James turned to speak with Sirius after that.

James and the other first year Gryffindor’s were led through the castle, toward a painting of a fat, black haired lady holding a glass. “I can shatter this glass with my voice.” She said, and suddenly burst into an opera song, when the glass wouldn’t break, she subtly smashed it against the frame.

“The password?” She asked, smiling warmly. “The password is Pliytrose.” McGonagall said, and the painting gracefully opened into the Gryffindor common room. There were carpets, sofa’s, and tapestries draped with the colors red and gold. “Woah.” James muttered, staring in aw.

“It’s amazing!” Peter whispered from next to him. “Uh-Huh.” James agreed, stepping into the room. “This is your Common Room, where you shall return after your daily classes, to the right are the Girls’ dormitories, and to the left is the Boys’.” McGonagall informed, pulling her sleeves down.

”For any of you pranksters, if a boy tries to go into the Girls’ dormitories, the stairs shall transform. Same goes for the Boys’ dormitories.” Not cool, James wanted to talk to Lily again! Even though she may be stubborn. “Dude, we could’ve done some wicked pranks if that weren’t possible.”

“Yeah, but we can still maybe prank the other boys,” Remus reasoned, itching behind his ear. “Just not the girls.” Peter nodded, James wasn’t even sure Peter wanted to prank others, maybe he just went along with what Remus said. “I know an awesome prank, I’ll tell you later.” Sirius said.

Later, late at night, Sirius woke him, Peter, and Remus up. He was holding a small, blue bowl. “Why are you holding a bowl?” A sleepy Remus said, rubbing his brown eyes. “Because, if we put hot water in it, and another boys hand,” Sirius explained “They’ll wet themselves!” Sirius giggled.

”Does that really work?” James asked, feeling skeptical of Sirius’ ‘awesome’ prank. “Yeah, it does! I tried it on my brother once.” Sirius reassured. “Alright, we’ll try it!” Peter said, snatching the bowl from Sirius’ hand. “I’ll put the water in, you pick a boy.” Peter said, walking toward the bathroom.

“Who should we pick?” Remus asked, James looked around. He saw a boy, who was quite tall for his age, who seemed fit. “Him, what big guy like him would wet himself?” James giggled, and they snuck toward the boy and waited for Peter to return.

“Him?” Peter asked, and they nodded. Peter handed the bowl back over to Sirius, who promptly stuck the boys tan hand into the bowl. They waited for a minute, and yes, there it was. The telltale sign of someone who had wet their pants. A dark, wet circle near the area of the boys pants.

James muffled his giggle with the palm of his hand, and lightly high-fived Sirius. “Wicked!” Peter smiled, with Remus nodding in agreement. And thus, a love for pranks grew inside James. “What if we pranked that greasy git next?” James offered, smirking. Sirius nodded with a giggle, and Peter also agreed. Remus still had to agree. “We could try, any ideas?”
