September 19th, 1998

Dear diary,

I'm Hermione Jean Granger. Although, I don't suppose you need to know that because writing in a diary is technically just me writing to myself but whatever.

Ginny, a good friend of mine, gave me you for my birthday, which is today, by the way. Happy 18th to me!

Ginny claims that this will be a good way to “express my feelings”. But as I sit by the fire in my softest pajamas and with my favorite scones. I find this whole idea rather stupid.

I have no feelings to express. Did the war take its toll on me? Yes, but I've come to terms with the fact that some things just have to happen. Did Ron and Harry decide not to return to Hogwarts with me to finish our 8th year, make me so angry that I ignored them for weeks? Also, yes, but I've come to terms with that also.

Life is good. My classes are going great, I'm at the top of course. Crooks is still kicking it despite being ancient. Ginny and I have become infinitely closer, and I've also made some new girl friends thanks to the fact that Ron and Harry are no longer trailing behind me. And, best of all, I'm head girl.

Well, actually, there is something I could tell you.

You see, every head girl has a head boy, and they are meant to share a dorm. Unfortunately for me, the head boy is Draco Sodding Malfoy.

You might not understand why this is a problem, so let me fill you in. Draco Malfoy had tormented me and my friends for years. He was the first person to call me a mudblood, and he was a death eater (although I believe that was out of necessity).

My point is we have a long history of hating each other, and now we are being forced to live together.

Although, living with him hasn't been so bad. He mostly keeps to himself. In fact, I probably wouldn't even notice he lived here if it wasn't for the fact that he kept a bowl full of green apples on the kitchen counter.

He was ordered to come back by the ministry, part of his parole. I can tell he doesn't want to be here. When I see him in classes or in the halls, he looks haunted. His skin is gray, and his eyes are dead, and he is almost always by himself. Well, except for Theodore Nott, who is occasionally chatting at Malfoy’s side, despite the fact that he is obviously not listening.

He pretty much ignores my entire existence. Except for the few times I have caught his eye from across the great hall. In which it becomes a staring contest, both refusing to look away first.

Sometimes, I wish I could peek inside his brain. Oh, Merlin, that sounds creepy, doesn't it? I just mean he keeps himself so closed off that it makes me curious about what's going on inside.

Anyways, it's getting awfully late, and I have a busy schedule tomorrow, so I think that is enough for tonight.

Yours truly,

Hermione Granger

Dear diary,

Remer how I told you that me in Malfoy engage in staring contest from across the hall?

Well today I finally won, granted it was because Nott spilled tea on him. But still a win is a win.

Your truly,
Hermione

Dear diary,

It's Hermione again, obviously. I don't have much to update on except for the fact that I've been paired with Malfoy for a potions project.

Now, he has no reason to ignore me like he's been doing so skilfully for the past month.

I cornered him in the library after dinner and forced him to pick a time for us to work together.

We spent a total of three minutes “scheduling”, or basically me forcing Malfoy to hand over his schedule so I could plan for us. The whole time, he avoided my eyes and seemed interested in being anywhere but near me.

But I did successfully find time for us to complete the potion, which would be tomorrow after dinner.

I'll update you on how that goes.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

I've just come back from working on my potion project with Malfoy, and I must say I'm surprised.

He didn't say much, which wasn't a shock, but he worked responsibly. He didn't expect me to do the project by myself, and his help wasn't unwanted. I didn't have to remind him when to stir or when to add the bat wings like I would with Harry or Ron.

And, (Oh godric can't believe I'm writing this) his hands weren't unpleasant to watch work either. His fingers were long, and they worked with precision. He wore his signet ring in his index finger, and he would twist it with his thumb constantly, which seemed to be a nervous habit.

Okay, okay, okay. Before you question why I was paying so much attention to his hands, you must understand that you mostly use your hands for potions. I would never pay that much attention to his hands otherwise.

I swear I have never watched the way his hand holds his wand in Defense Against The Dark Arts, or how he can delictly handle a plant in Herbology.

I have NEVER.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

Malfoy’s hand brushed mind.

It was surprisingly soft.

Dear diary,

Hello again!

I would like to inform you that I've made the discovery that Draco Malfoy can be rather handsome.

You're probably wondering how I came to this conclusion, and I can't lie Malfoy’s always been pleasant to look at, but today, it just seemed to click how handsome he truly is.

He looks like a stone statue, his features carved precisely. And his eyes are such a unique color that would look odd on someone else, but the Storm gray suits him so well.

He's taller than Harry but shorter than Ron. It's just the right height, in my opinion. And he's skinny but not in the strange way, more so in the way that it just suits him.

And his blonde hair matches nicely with his pale complexion. I like His hair now. It's long and falls over his forehead, nothing like the way he had it slicked back when we were younger. It looks awfully soft, like I could run my hands through it.

Okay…. I think that's enough writing for today as I seem to be becoming delusional.

I promise to write soon.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

I realize that my last entry makes it sound as if I fancy Malfoy, which I DO NOT. I was just simply admiring the fact that he was handsome.

I felt I needed to clear that up.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

Malfoy’s quite a nice study, buddy. He's quiet and doesn't ask too many questions, and he takes amazing notes.

You're mostly likely wondering how this started. We'll, it was about a week ago that I found Malfoy hunched over his books studying in the library. I had made the rash decision to plop down next to him. He sneered at me but didn't tell me to leave.

We studied in silence the first day. The second day, I found him at the same table, and I had sat across from him again. This time, though, I asked to borrow his Herbology notes because I had missed the last class due to a cold. He was reluctant, but eventually, he handed over the notes. That's how I discovered that he had such nice penmanship.

Since then, we've been exchanging notes. It's actually quite nice to work with someone who values knowledge. (No offense to Ron or Harry).

I'm actually about to head off to study with him now.

I'll write soon.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

I've discovered that Malfoy has a sweet tooth. It's quite funny seeing him devour a whole box of chocolates in one sitting.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

Draco is actually rather funny. It took me a while, but I've finally worn down his tough exterior. I think I'm close to seeing a smile.

Yours truly,

Hermione

December 7th, 1998

Dear diary,

He apologized. For everything. I guess I didn't realize an apology was something I wanted, but it feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

Draco has most certainly changed. So much so that I have begun sitting with him and Theo Nott in the great hall. People give me weird looks or tell me that a war hero like myself shouldn't be fraternizing with the enemy. But they have changed. Most of the slytherins had.

Maybe people would realize that they aren't that bad if they just gave them a chance.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear diary,

Today I learned that Draco Malfoy can speak several different languages.

Which is very attractive.

Merlin murder me.

Yours truly,

Hermione

December 15th, 1998

Dear Diary,

Draco and I spent the day in our dorm playing muggle games.

It took a lot of convincing on my part, but in the end, it was fun. We played Uno, connect four, and Sorry. I, of course, beat him at all of them, to which he complained, was completely unfair.

We've become quite good friends recently.

Is he still an ass? Yes, but not in the way he used to be. His eyes aren't filled with hate when he looks at me. It's something else. What exactly? I don't know.

I wonder what I should get him for Christmas. Should I get him something for Christmas? I mean, that's what friends do, right?

I'll figure it out.

Yours truly,

Hermione

December 25th, 1998

Dear diary,

I ended up giving him a sweater I made, which sounds stupid compared to the signed first edition copy he gave me of one of my favorite books.

But when I handed it to him, he smiled. Truly smiled. It nearly knocked me off my feet. I wish I had a picture

Yours truly,

Hermione

I think I fancy Draco Malfoy.

Dear diary,

He kissed me and ran.

His lips were soft, and his tongue was skilled. But the moment he realized what he was doing, he apologized and left.

Yours truly,

Hermione

I hate him.
I hate him.
I hate him.
I hate him.
I hate him.
I hate him.

He kisses me, then runs away and then has the audacity to ignore me. He was the one who kissed me first. If anything, I should be the one offended.

Yours truly,

Hermione

Dear Granger's diary,

This is Draco Malfoy.

Granger, I understand that stealing your diary was probably a very bad idea. But I swear on my life that I didn't read a single thing.

It was just that there was no other way I could think to get you to let me apologize. I've tried sending chocolates (I know you have a sweet tooth), and you burned them. I've tried sending books, and you burned them (something I thought Hermione Granger would never do). I tried sending letters, but you burned them without evening opening. This was a last resort.

I was scared, Granger. I kissed you and ran and was a complete ass because I was scared.

You have to understand that you're practically perfect Granger.

Everything about you is perfect.

You shouldn't be spending your time around someone like me, but you do anyway.

And now I fancy you.

And if you think I'm lying, here is a list of reasons:
Your eyes light up when you talk about a book you love. It's almost like their reflecting the sun.
You're beyond smart. I've never had the pleasure of working with someone who isn't a nitwit.
Your hair is beautiful. I know you don't believe so, but I do.
You're kind. You're so so so so kind. Even to people who most certainly don't deserve it.
And your smiles. Their so genuine and warm.
It's almost like someone captured the sun in a jar and put it in a person to make you.

You don't have to ever talk to me again Granger (I would really hate that). But I want you to know that I am so sorry.

Yours truly

Yours always,

Draco

Dear diary,

How dare he steal you! That is so unbelievable.

but I forgive him.

Bonjour!

I'm awfully sorry my mother neglected writing in you for 20 years. How boring your life must have been, sitting on her shelf collecting dust. That is why I stole you.

I'm Alora Jean Malfoy. I've recently turned sixteen and I have a little brother named Scorpius Malfoy (he's quite annoying). My parents are Hermione Jean Granger-Malfoy and Draco Lucius Malfoy. Which I'm sure is exciting news to you since it seems the only thing my mom wrote about in you was my dad.

I will update you that their lives are going rather well. They are happily married, have been for 17 years. They have a wonderful, brilliant, and perfectly smart daughter. They also have a son.

They are probably the best parents known to Wizarding kind.

I would totally tell you more but I hear my mom coming down the hall. Perhaps I will write later!

Sincerely,

Alora J. Malfoy
