It Might Be True

Remus watched his boyfriend slowly fall asleep, exhausted. Slowly, so that he didn't wake him up, Remus slid out of the bed and over to the desk. Over in his own bed, James was reading while Regulus slept next to him.

James gave him an easy smile, glancing at the curtains hiding Sirius. "Is he feeling better?"

"He's asleep," Remus answered. He hoped Sirius would be feeling better when he woke up, though. Remus took a deep breath - there was something he'd wanted to bring up to James, anyway. "Do you know what neurodivergent means?"

James frowned, catching on to his tone as he marked his place and put the book down. "No? Why?"

"I think that..." Remus hesitated. Was this something you bring up to your friend about your boyfriend? Should he talk to Sirius first? But James might be good for support, and it was better to get him on board so that he could help Regulus, too. Shit, Regulus. Should Remus even mention Regulus? Was it really his place to make assumptions about Regulus? Sirius was different - he knew Sirius better than anyone. But he wasn't saying that Regulus definitely was, he was just...what was he doing? What did he expect James to do with this, anyway? Maybe he shouldn't bring it up - maybe he shouldn't even be thinking these things. He wasn't a healer, he didn't know what he was doing. Yeah, he probably shouldn't talk about things he didn't know enough about. He shouldn't-

"Remus," James snapped his fingers, breaking Remus's train of thought. "Hey, what is it? What does neurodivergent mean?"

"Um." Remus glanced at Regulus, still asleep. "It's a term that describes people whose brains work differently. They process things differently."

"Okay," James tilted his head, working it out. "And you're thinking about this because..."

"I think that Sirius is neurodivergent. Maybe. And Regulus." Remus bit his lip. "Actually, I think a lot of us are neurodivergent in one way or another, but they're struggling and I think that we could get some resources to help them, but I think to do that we'll have to talk to them about being neurodivergent."

James smiled a little. "Remus, breathe. It'll be okay, we'll do some research on our own and then we can bring it up together. Does that sound okay?"

Remus felt a wave of relief at his friends acceptance. "You'll help me?"

"I will absolutely help you," James promised. "You don't need to worry so much."

Remus rolled his eyes. "Like you can talk."

James shrugged in agreement. "So what are some things you're noticing that made you think he was neurodivergent?"

Remus glanced at Regulus again, checking that he wasn't awake yet. He knew Sirius wasn't, because he could see him through a crack in the curtains. "He has this insane amount of energy, he doesn't sit still, he can't focus without a huge amount of effort or extra sound. He has to play music while he does his homework. He has sensory issues with textures and flavors, especially on days like today. He sets things down and forgets where they are two seconds later. He's constantly interrupting himself, always noticing every small detail, every time someone or something moves around us. He doesn't have a sleep schedule. He has these days where he wants to do things but can't bring himself to actually do them, and he can't do a boring assignment until the night before it's due, no matter how big of an assignment it is."

Remus stopped there, feeling a bit like he was telling James too much. "There's a bit more, but I just...I think we could help them if we knew for sure."

"I get it," James glanced down at Regulus with a soft smile. "And I'm willing to learn anything if you think it'll help them."

Remus nodded, then glanced over to Sirius. "I'm going to..." He gestured to Sirius.

"Yeah," James replied. "Go for it."

So Remus grabbed a book and moved back to his boyfriend. His beautiful, amazing, possibly neurodivergent boyfriend. And hoped that Sirius wouldn't get mad when he finally brought it up.
