Chapter 1
"Yes, Mom." Iris spoke into her phone, "I just passed by the huge oak, I'll be there in like, ten minutes." She was walking home from her job as a waitress to her mother, who she worked two jobs to provide for. It was late at night, and the dark street was only lit up by fluorescent streetlights.
She heard some words, more like yelling, behind her. It seemed to be in some ancient, Latin-like language. Immediately, she felt some weight, about the weight of a grown man, tackle her, knocking her into the grass beside the sidewalk. As they tumbled to the ground, a green bolt of light flew past them.
She looked at the man on top of her. He was skinny, maybe a little above average height. He had long, flowy black hair that looked a little bit too perfect. His body was covered in tattoos. Immediately. he jumped up and stood defensively over her, holding up something that looked like.. a wand?
She finally took a look at the other man, the one who sent the green bolt at her. She couldn't see his face, because he had a black hood over it. Actually, his entire body was covered in a long black cloak.
"Leave her alone! She did nothing to you, she's just some muggle who was walking down the street!" The man who had tackled her a minute earlier demanded. "You can't go around- just- killing people for no reason!'
'Killing'? Was that green bolt.. deadly? Had that man just saved her life?
She didn't have time to think about it anymore, because her savior grabbed her wrist and pulled her up.
"I'm Sirius. Sirius Black. If anyone asks you about this, it didn't happen, okay? Now, go. Leave. It isn't safe for you here." The man told her. Just now, when the white light of the streetlight was shining on him, did she realize how attractive the man was. He had sharp cheekbones, a slim nose, and beautiful, grey-blue eyes.
"What are you looking at? Go! Run!" He demanded, slightly more urgent now. She was snapped out of her trance. Her phone started ringing. That didn't seem very important, though, because another green bolt of light flew past her shoulder. She knew she wouldn't get lucky another time. She ignored her ringing phone and ran as fast as she could.
After a few minutes, she made it to her apartment complex. She bolted up the stairs and unlocked the door as fast as she could. When she got inside, she slammed the door shut and collapsed onto the couch, sides heaving.
"Iris? What the hell happened to you?" Her mother asked, noticing her frazzled hair and muddy clothes.
Iris knew her mother wouldn't believe her, plus Sirius had told her not to tell anyone about it. "I- uhm- I saw a dog without a leash and got scared. So, I fell back into the mud." She lied.
"Oh. Right. Can you do the dishes?" Her mother requested.
