tear
Finally done with his work, James closed his laptop with a sigh and went in search of the other two occupants of the apartment. He was about to call out to Regulus when he was stopped in his tracks by the sight before him.
Regulus was sitting in the middle of the living room floor with Harry’s favorite blanket in his lap. The boy in question stood next to him holding a cat stuffie to his chest. Regulus looked to be sewing part of the blanket while Harry looked on anxiously. Regulus appraised his work for a moment before cutting off the excess thread.
“See? Good as new,” Regulus said happily, holding out the blanket to Harry. The boy dropped his stuffie in his haste to grab the blanket and see for himself.
“There are stars!” Harry gasped. He looked between Regulus and the blanket with wide eyes, his glasses slipping down his nose. Regulus gently pushed them back up and brushed an errant tear off his face before cupping his cheek.
“Mistakes are opportunities to make things better, mon rayon de soleil. Just because your blanket got a little tear doesn’t mean it's ruined. We fixed it, and now it’s extra special.” Regulus tapped Harry on the nose causing the boy to let out a squeal of delight. Harry hugged the blanket close to him with both hands and then spotted James standing at the entryway.
“Dada, look! Look at my blanket! There are stars!” Harry exclaimed, rushing over to him. James used the momentum to pick him up and tuck him into his side, holding him with one arm.
“Oof, you’re getting so big! What are we feeding you?” James teased him. He held the blanket with his other hand and ran his thumb over the newly stitched section. Regulus had used dark blue thread to sew the torn edge and added three blue stars next to it. James glanced up at the other man. Regulus walked towards them with a soft smile, abandoned cat stuffie in hand.
“It’s beautiful, Haz.” James kissed his cheek and put him down with an exaggerated huff. Regulus handed the boy the cat and brushed his hair back.
“Dinner will be ready soon, so you’ve got til then to go play,” Regulus told him, and Harry ran off dragging the blanket behind him.
James pulled Regulus in by the waist. “Hi.”
“How long have you been standing here?” Regulus asked him.
“Not that long. Where did you learn how to sew?”
“Oh, I watched a few online tutorials after Harry got that tear in his shirt a few months ago,” Regulus said, looking a little embarrassed. “Figured it was something I should know.”
When James had first started dating Regulus, he had been so nervous to introduce him to Harry. He didn’t know how Regulus would be around him, and no matter how much James loved him, Harry would always be the priority. James knew now that he worried for nothing.
James tilted Regulus’ chin up and kissed him slowly.
“What was that for?” Regulus asked with amusement when they broke apart.
“Nothing. I just love you,” James replied easily. “Come on. I’ll help you with dinner.”
