Chapter 10
Sirius believes his birthday should be a national, no international holiday. That makes him seem conceited, and though he certainly acts it, that couldn't be further from the truth. He just wants people to like him. Perhaps if his birthday was celebrated worldwide, maybe he’d feel half as loved as he truly is.
That’s enough melancholic thoughts. It’s Sirius’ birthday! The best day of the year! Every November 3rd, Sirius makes everyone treat him like royalty and no one can complain. He loves it.
He loves this birthday especially since he woke up in Remus’ arms, the nerd obviously reading while he slept in. Sirius finds it hard to comprehend that someone like Remus is here, right now, with him. He doesn’t even care that they are not officially dating (yet – he's manifesting), he just wants to be with him. His Moony.
“Hey,” Sirius mumbles.
“Happy birthday, sweetheart,” Remus replies, tearing his gaze away from his book. Sirius wholeheartedly believes he is never going to recover from Remus calling him that. Sweetheart.
“What? No birthday kiss?”
“You’ve literally just woke up, give me a chance,” he says as he bends down and places a soft, tender kiss to Sirius’ lips. “Go take a shower,” Remus instructs, “I have a very special day planned for you.”
“You done that for me?”
“Yes, of course. Now, go. You don’t want to smell on your birthday.”
“My natural scent is amazing; I’ll have you know.”
“You are without a doubt the weirdest person I have ever met.”
“You love that about me.”
“I- just go.”
“Okay, okay. I’m going,” Sirius says as he untangles himself from his blankets and kisses Remus one last time before he leaves the bedroom.
When Sirius gets back to his dorm an hour later – because it takes that long for him to get his hair perfect – Remus had placed a picnic blanket on the floor and has all his favourite food spread across it.
“What is this?”
“It’s far too cold for a picnic outside, so I thought we’d have a breakfast picnic in here," he explains.
“This is amazing. I love it.”
“Good. Come eat.”
Sirius sits on the floor as he takes in the scene. Everything is just perfect. But there’s something...
“Where’s James? I haven’t seen him all day,” Sirius asks when he realises what’s missing.
“He had a lecture, I think.”
“Oh, okay.” Sirius tries not to let his disappointment show. James’ life doesn't revolve around Sirius, he doesn't know why he is so upset about this. Especially since he knows he will see James later today.
Remus says, “I invited him to breakfast, but he said no,” as he takes a bite of a chocolate croissant.
That makes sense.
“You’ve noticed his decrease in appetite, haven’t you?”
“I have.”
“I don’t know what to do, Moony. He’s obviously not doing well, and I just don’t know how to help him. I'm worried about him.” Sirius confesses.
Remus thinks for a moment, before speaking. “Unless he talks to you, there isn’t much you can do except be there for him.”
“I know...”
Remus notices the shift in mood, so inquires, “Did you want your present now?”
That perks Sirius up a bit, “Obviously I want my present.”
Remus gets the gift sitting on Sirius’ bed and passes it to him. Sirius tears away the wrapping paper like an excited little kid and audibly gasps when he processes the words written on the box.
Remus fucking got him a record player. A fucking record player!
“Moony...” Sirius can’t find the words to express just how much he loves this present.
“Now you can finally play all your Queen records.”
Sirius stares at the box in his lap. “Do you like it?” Remus asks tentatively.
Sirius is snapped out of his trance. He gently places the record player on the floor next to him, and kisses Remus like there would be no tomorrow. He cannot verbalise how much this means to him, so he tells him through the kiss.
“You like it that much, huh?” Remus laughs as they pull away.
“Yeah, I do.”
Sirius then shoves all of his work on his desk to the side, and unpackages the record player. He picks his favourite record to play – A Day At The Races – before returning to Remus and kissing him once again.
Remus really needs to stop being so...Remus. He’s making it very hard for Sirius not to fall for him.
