Maya was surrounded by fire. There was no way out. The smoke was making her lungs and trouth burn. " Andy tell Carina that I love her and Liam more than anything. "
On the other side of the fire. " You are going to tell that to her yourself. " Andy pressed her radio. " We're is the airdrop?"
The response came quicky. " It'd not wind is to strong. "
Maya steared at the flames. " Andy I'm not getting out of this one. I need to promise you will be there for Carina and Liam. "
Andy shook her head. " No. We are not doing this I'm going to figure this out!"
Maya knew there was no way. " Andy that is nothing you can do. Just promise me you will take care of them. "
Andy ran her fingers through her hair. " I'm getting you out Mai. "
Maya didn't even try to hold her tears. " Andy you can't. This is not your fault. I need you to know that I love you. I didn't know what that even was before you. You are my sister. I'm sorry I never told you that before. Please I need you to promise-"
At this point Andy was crying too. " I promise you- I love you too Maya so fucking much. Liam and Carina will always beJ family to me. "
Andy looked at the sky. She was going to watch her best friend die she needed to do something. Anything. " Maya?"
There was no answer. Andy felt like the world had stopped for a moment. Was than that it came to her. Andy took of her backpack and grabbed her fire blanket. Ross eyes winded. " You are not doing that Grey. "
Andy ignored her. " Try to stop me Chief. "
Andy knew it was reckless. She knew it was stupid. But she also knew she wasn’t about to stand there and let Maya die.
Ross was shouting at her, but Andy barely heard it over the roar of the fire. Her hands shook as she unfolded the fire shelter. She had one shot at this. If she messed up, she’d be joining Maya in the flames.
She ran.
The heat was unbearable. Her gear felt like it was melting into her skin, and every breath she took was like inhaling fire. But she kept going, pushing forward until she saw Maya. She was on her knees, barely conscious, coughing violently.
“Maya!” Andy shouted, dropping next to her. She grabbed Maya’s face, forcing her to look at her. “We’re getting out of here.”
Maya shook her head weakly. “Andy… you shouldn’t be here.”
“Too late for that,” Andy snapped, throwing the fire shelter over both of them. She curled her body around Maya’s, pressing the edges of the blanket down as tightly as she could. The flames roared around them, and the heat was unbearable, but Andy refused to let go.
Minutes felt like hours.
The fire passed over them, and Andy could feel her skin burning. The pain was excruciating, but she held onto Maya like a lifeline.
Then, finally—voices.
“Over here! Captain is on fire!"
Andy felt the extinguisher fluid hit her back as someone grabbed Maya from her arms. Her knees give out as she watched Travis intubated Maya.
Andy fought to stay conscious as hands grabbed at her, trying to pull her away from Maya. She could hear shouting—Travis, Ben, even Vic—but everything felt distant, muffled by the ringing in her ears.
Maya wasn’t moving.
“Stay with her,” Andy gasped, reaching for Maya even as her own body threatened to shut down. Her throat felt raw, every breath like swallowing glass. Her back and neck her still burning.
“We got her, Andy,” Ben’s voice cut through the chaos, firm and steady. “You need oxygen now.”
Andy barely registered the mask being pressed over her face. She tried to focus on Maya—on the pale stretch of skin visible beneath the soot, on the way Travis and Vic worked in sync to stabilize her.
“She’s breathing,” Travis called out, his voice tight with emotion.
Andy let her head fall back against the ground, relief crashing over her so hard she felt like she might break.
At Grey-Sloan
Carina didn't remember the last time she felt this happy. She was pregnant. She was finally pregnant. After all the negative tests , after the pain of finding out she had no eggs available. She was finally pregnant.
Was than that she was paiged to the ER. She didn't think much of probably a pregnant patient. But when she saw the look in Ben's face she could tell something was not right. That could only mean one thing. " Where is my wife? What happened"
Ben looked down to the ground. " The wind shift and Maya got stuck on a ring of fire. Airdrop wasn't available. Andy got her out but Maya inalated a lot of smoke. She felt lined in the bus once. It's bad Carina I'm really sorry. "
Carina felt trás stream down her face. Her happiness turned into terror. Her wife could die. Carina felt the room spin. Ben put his arm around Carina's waist and guided her to a chair. " Where is Andrea? I need hear from her how this happened. "
Ben took a deep breath. " Andy got severely burned when she went to rescue Maya. She is on the OR having her burns debrided. I get that you may want some one to be angry at but what happened wasn't anyone's fault. "
Carina shook her head. " No this can't be happening. I can't - I need her Ben. "
The Firefighter just hugged Carina as she cried. Her tears weting his uniform. Was than that Meredith aproched them. " Carina is Maya -"
Carina cut her off. " Smoke inhalation -is bad Andy got her out but she is- is bed she is on the OR getting her burns debrided. Warren why did Andy had to do that ? What the hell happened?"
Ben looked up from Carina to Meredith. " The wind shifted the engine was to far and -"
Meredith cut him off. " Of course it was with all the budget cuts. I'm just can't believe this !"
Was than that Teddy walked to them. " Carina Maya has
carbon monoxide posing. She is stable now but not out of the woods yet. We had to put her on an hiperbaric chamber. "
Carina barely registered Teddy’s words. Stable. Not out of the woods. Hyperbaric chamber. It all swirled around in her mind, but none of it felt real.
“I need to see her,” Carina choked out, already pushing herself up.
Teddy put a gentle but firm hand on her shoulder. “Not yet. She’s still being monitored. As soon as we can, we’ll bring you to her.”
Carina shook her head. “You don’t understand, Teddy. I need to see her. I need to hold her hand. I need her to know I’m here.”
“I know,” Teddy said, her voice full of sympathy. “But right now, the best thing you can do is take a moment to breathe. She’s stable, and we’re doing everything we can. You know we can have visitors at the hiperbaric chamber room. "
Carina didn't say anything else. Teddy walked out. Ben turned to Meredith. " I have to go back there. "
He said before walking away.
Meredith grabbed Carina's hand. " We need to have faith. "
Carina looked down to the ground. " I'm pregnant. I just found out. I can't lose her. I can't be the single mother of two tiny babes. "
Meredith took a deep breath. " Don't take your mind there. Is going to drive you insane. "
They stayed there for what seamed like forever. Until Jackson walked in. " Andy is going to be okay. She has secund and third degree burns on her back, back and forearms. She will be in a lot of pain but she should make a full recovery. You can see her. "
Meredith let out a breath of relief. " Carina-"
Carina put her hand on Meredith's arm. " Go be with your wife. "
Meredith just nodded. As much as she didn't want to leave Carina alone Andy needed her.
At Andy's room.
Meredith aproched Andy's bed. Her wife was laying on her side her right forearm and neck bandage up as Andy opened her eyes Meredith grabbed her hand. " Maya?"
Meredith took a deep breath. " She is at the hiperbaric chamber. She is fighting princesa. You know how strong she is. "
Andy swallowed hard, blinking past the haze of pain and medication. “She—she’s alive?”
Meredith nodded, squeezing her hand. “She’s alive. She inhaled a lot of smoke, and it’s bad, but she’s fighting. Just like you.”
Andy let out a shaky breath, her body sagging in relief. “I thought—I thought I lost her, Mer.” Her voice cracked, the weight of everything crashing over her.
Meredith gently ran a hand over Andy’s hair. “You saved her, Andy. You ran into flames for her. That’s why she’s still has a chance. You gave her that.”
Andy closed her eyes, trying to focus on that. The pain was unbearable, her skin raw and burning, but none of it mattered as long as Maya was alive.
A while later
Carina was standing there in the waiting room when Teddy walked in. " We got Maya stabilized enough to get her out of the hiperbaric chamber. She is still on oxigen tough. She is not of the woods yet but she is getting better. We will keep her on the ventilator for now. You can see her now. "
Carina walked into Maya's ICU room berly holding tougher. Maya looked small and fragile at that hospital bed with all those machines connect to her. The Italian sat on the chair next to the bed and grabbed her wife's hand. " I'm here bambina. I'm right here. I need you to fight amore mio. I need you. Our babes need you. I'm pregnant bella. We are having another babe. I don't think I can do this without you. I love you so much. Please come back to me. "
Carina was there for hours when Jo walked in. " Dr. DeLuca you need to eat something. I know this is impossible but you need take care of yourself and the babe. "
Carina barely registered Jo’s words. Eat? How could she eat when Maya was lying there, motionless, a machine breathing for her? How could she think about anything other than the rise and fall of Maya’s chest, the slow beeping of the monitors?
Jo crouched down beside her. “Carina, I get it. But y. Your baby needs you strong. You can't help Maya if you collapse. "
Carina’s grip on Maya’s hand tightened. “I can’t leave her,” she whispered, voice hoarse from crying.
Jo sighed, reaching for the untouched cup of water on the table. “Just a few sips. For the baby.”
Carina hesitated but let go of Maya’s hand just long enough to take a shaky sip. The cool water did nothing to ease the burning ache in her throat, but it was something.
Jo gave her a small smile. “I’ll get a smoothie. You don’t have to leave her. "
Carina barely nodded, her eyes already back on Maya. Jo squeezed her shoulder before slipping out, leaving her alone with her wife once more.
Carina reached out again, brushing damp hair away from Maya’s forehead. “You scared me so much, amore,” she whispered, her fingers trembling. “I thought I lost you. I can’t lose you. I won’t.”
She pressed a gentle kiss to the back of Maya’s hand, letting silent tears fall onto the sheets.
Maya woke up in some sort of garden. " Fuck I really did die. Cap you better not be here too! "
Was than that she heard a voice. Andrew's voice. " . You are in a coma. Welcome to the limbo. I'm not sure about Andy but I haven't seen he."
Maya shook her head. " I need to go back! Your sister needs me! My son needs me!"
Maya turned to face Andrew, her heart pounding. “I can’t be here,” she insisted, shaking her head. “I need to wake up.”
Andrew gave her a small, sad smile. “I know you do. But it’s not that simple.”
Maya’s fists clenched. “What do you mean? If I’m in a coma, then I just need to—wake up.” She tried to will herself back, to force her body to move, but nothing happened. The garden remained around her, the air too still, too quiet.
Andrew sighed, stepping closer. “Maya, your body is fighting, but your mind—your soul—it’s stuck. You need to make the choice to go back.”
Maya frowned. “Of course I choose to go back! Why the hell would I stay here?”
Andrew tilted his head. “ You gave up Maya. When you were out there you just gave up. Why did you do that?"
Maya shook her head. " Andrew I was stuck on a fucking ring of fire. There was no away out. I was lucky Andy was crazy enough to literally walk through flames to save me. Besides you don't get to judge me on that ! You went after a dangerous criminal and hot yourself killed! You put Carina trough hell!"
Andrew smirked at her. " You gave up on yourself. You are just lucky Andy didn't gave you on you. "
Maya shook her head. " And we don't even know if she is alive!. You don't know anything about fires. There was no way out. So cut the crap and tell me how to get back to my wife. "
Andrew disappeared. " Andrew where are you?"
That was when Dean walked in. Maya couldn't keep the tears from falling. " Bishop don't take what he said to heart. We are are not in the limbo. We are on your brain. "
Maya crossed her arms. " So I'm have some short of coma delirium. Makes sense. I really miss you. Like a lot. Losing you it was hell. "
Was than that Maya realized. " So this is about my unconssious trying to process things I never really got over. Like you daying on us Andrew being killed. "
Dean smiled at her. " You are smarter than I remember. That was nothing no one could have done to save my Maya. It wasn't your fault.
Maya shook her head. " I can't help thinking you may be alive if I was still the Captain. Or if Andy was the Capitain. And their was Rigo. We all know I shouldn't have let Jack work with him. I guess I just wanted the team to trust me. "
That was when Rigo showed up. " You weren't ready Bishop. But neither was Herrera - wait she goes by Grey now. But I should have known better. I should have left Eva the first or the tenth time she cheated on me. A lot of people made mistakes that lead to me dying. But for the most part was her. It was me for not leaving. "
Dean put his hand on Maya's shoulder. " He is right Cap. You need to forgive yourself. "
Maya took a moment before replying. " I guess you are right. In this job we make decisions and sometimes we don't foresee the outcomes. I tough I need to trust my team so they would trust me. I put my name for a job a wasn't ready for but I didn't promote myself. That was Dixon and his political games. Thank you guys. "
They disappeared and for a moment Maya was alone.
Back to Maya's room
Carina was running her fingers through Maya's hair when the blond openned her eyes. " It's okay bambina. You are safe. Don't try to talk you have a tube down your throat. I'm was so scared amore. I'm just so glad to see those beautiful blue eyes again. "
Maya looked around. She was at the hospital. She was safe. " Andy is going to be okay. You don't have to worry about that. Right now you just need to focus on getting better. "
That was when Teddy walked in. " Bishop I'm glad to see you wake. Your vitals are improving. We will take the tube out soon. You are officially out of the woods"
Carina let out a breath of relief. " See bella you are going to be just fine. I love you so much amore mio."
Later that day Maya was finally off the ventilator. " Car I- Love you. "
Carina ran her fingers through Maya's hair. " I love you too. So much. I'm so glad to have you back. I need you amore. Our bambini need you. "
Maya's eyes winded. " Babimini - plural?"
Carina nodded. She grabbed Maya's hand to put in her belly. " I'm pregnant bambina. With your babe. "
Maya let out a smile. " We are having - a baby. "
Carina smiled back. " Si bambina we did it. We did it. Now you rest. I won't leave your side. "
Maya shook her head. " You rest - you are pregnant and -Liam needs you. I-be fine. "
Carina looked at her wife. " Okay I will rest but only after you fall asleep. "
Maya closed her eyes as Carina ran her fingers through her hair. It didn't take long for Maya to fall asleep. The Italian watched her wife sleep for a little while before walking out the room.
Carina went to check on Andy. She need to thank the Captain for saving her wife. When the Italian walked into the room she could see Andy was in pain. Meredith was seating next to her wife trying to comfort her. " Ciao Andrea. Maya is going to be okay. She is out the ventilator. "
Andy let out a heavy breath. " I'm sorry Carina it took me to look to-"
Carina cut Andy of grabbing her hand. " No. You saved her Andy. She is going to be okay thanks to you. Now take a deep breath. Just breathe with me tesoro. "
Andy followed Carina's instructions while Meredith ran her fingers through her hair. " I tough she was going to die. I took too long."
Carina looked at Meredith than to Andy. " Andrea you got her out. She is going to be okay. Try to get some rest and I promise I will arrange for you too see her soon. "
Andy closed her eyes and nodded. Didn't take long for her to fall asleep. " I'm going to get Liam and go home to get some rest. The kids?"
Meredith looked up at Carina. " Lexie has Alex and Derek has the older kids. Call me if you need anything. "
At Carina's and Maya's home
Carina was holding Liam while Amelia sat next to her." I'm going to make you something to eat. Bishop will kill me of you collapse on me. "
Carina leaned against the couch. " Everything that happens feels surreal. If Andy hadn't -"
Amelia cut her off. " But she did. Don't think about what ifs is going to drive you insane. After we are done here I need to drag Meredith too eat something."
Carina sighed. " Good lucky with that. I doubt Meredith will leave Andy's side when she is in so much pain. "
Amelia put a plate with an omelette and a salad and a glass of orange juice in front of Carina. " I can be very persuasive. "
Amelia scupped Liam in her arms. " Hi little guy. ".
Carina took a sip of her juice. " I feel so exhausted but I don't think I can rest. "
Amelia gently bounced Liam. " You have to try. Take a shower and a nap and then you can get back to Maya. "
Carina took a deep breath. " I promise I will try. "
A few days later Maya was finally trasfered to a regular room. Liam was in her lap. " Hi Probie mommy missed you so much. Are you excited to be a big brother!" Liam smiled at his mom.
Carina ran her fingers through Maya's hair. " I love you both so much. Now let me help you so we can go see Andy. Hold him and let me help you to the wheelchair
At Andy’s Room
When Carina wheeled Maya into Andy’s room, Meredith was adjusting Andy’s pillows while Andy winced, trying to sit up straighter. She looked up when she saw them.
“Good to see you alive Bishop. Hi Probie,” Andy said grabbing Liam's small hand with her finger.
Maya put her hand Andy's arm. " I still can believe in what you did. You risked everything to save me. "
Andy squeezed Maya's hand. " I couldn't let you die on my watch. "
Maya took a moment before saying. " We have some news. I wanted to tell you in person. Carina is pregnant! "
Andy let out a smile. " Congratulations guys! I'm so happy for you. I know how much you both wanted. I just hope this one can wait to get to he hospital to be born. Delivery in the living room is not a walk on the park. "
Maya let out a laugh. " Or in the middle of a major disaster. But I'm not getting my hopes up. "
Carina chuckled, resting a hand on Maya’s shoulder." I can be my on OB so let's hope this babe os more paint than Alex was. "
Was than that Derek walked in with Zola who was caring Alex, Bailey and Ellis. " Hi Andy the kids wanted to see you. "
Andy’s face lit up despite the pain she was in. “Hey, my little monsters.”
Bailey rolled his eyes. “We’re not little anymore, Mami.”
Ellis climbed onto the side of Andy’s bed, carefully avoiding her injuries, and pressed a kiss to her cheek. “We missed you.”
Zola stood near the foot of the bed, holding Alex, who was gripping onto her shirt. “We made you a card,” she said, handing over a handmade get-well-soon card covered in doodles of fire trucks, hearts, and what appeared to be a very exaggerated drawing of Andy with a firefighter’s helmet.
Andy chuckled as she carefully took it. “This is amazing, guys. I love it.” She looked at Bailey. “Did you draw the helmet?”
Bailey smirked. “Obviously. "
Meredith watched the scene unfold, her eyes softening as she saw Andy surrounded by their kids. Then, she looked at Derek. “Thanks for bringing them.”
Derek nodded, glancing between Andy and Maya. “I figured they could use some family time. Looks like there’s a lot of good news to celebrate.” He gestured toward Maya and Carina. “Congratulations, by the way.”
Carina smiled. “Grazie, Derek.”
Maya, still holding Andy’s hand, gave it another squeeze. “I’m really glad you’re okay, Andy.”
Andy met her best friend’s gaze, seeing the weight of everything they’d been through reflected there. “Right back at you, Bishop.”
Meredith crossed her arms. “Alright, now that everyone’s here, I’m putting a time limit on this visit. Andy needs to rest, and Maya, so do you.”
Maya groaned. “Mer, I’m fine—”
“Nope,” Meredith cut her off. “You just got out of the ICU. You get thirty more minutes, and then Carina takes you back to your room.”
Carina smirked. “ I agree with Meredith. Both of you need to rest. "
Zola put Alex on the bed. " Little one be careful Mami has lots of boo-boos. "
Alex clapped her hands. " Mami!"
Andy ran her fingers through her hair. " I'm here Cariño. Mami will have to stay here for a little while."
Ellis ran her fingers through Andy's hair. " But you will be okay?"
Andy gave Ellis s small smile. " Si mi amor. I will be just fine. "
Bailey aproched Andy's bed. " We are glad you are okay Mami. "
Zola nodded. " We were worried about both of you so try to stay out of trouble. "
Maya grabbed Zola's hand. " We promise you will try."
A week later
Maya was finally back home. She abd Carina were cuddling in bed with Liam. Maya was resting her head on Carina's shoulder and had her hand on her wife's belly. " I can believe we are having another babe. Do you think will be a boy or a girl?"
Carina ran her fingers through Maya's hand. " I just want a healthy babe. After everything we went through I'm just happy we are finally doing this. "
Maya pressed a gentle kiss to Carina’s shoulder, feeling warmth spread through her chest. “Me too,” she murmured. “I mean, Liam’s going to be the best big brother ever. He such a sweet little guy.”
Carina chuckled softly, shifting slightly so she could run her fingers through Maya’s short blonde hair. “That’s true. But I think he’ll need some time to adjust. He’s still our little one for now.”
Maya hummed in agreement, watching as Liam snuggled against Carina’s other side, his tiny hand resting over her stomach. “He’s already claiming the baby,” she whispered, grinning.
Carina placed her hand over Liam’s and let out a soft sigh. “He is.” She paused for a moment before turning her gaze to Maya. “Are you really okay, Amore?”
Maya exhaled, knowing Carina wasn’t just asking about her physical injuries. “I think so,” she admitted. “It was a lot. Me getting trapped on the fire, the hospital, Andy risking her life like that—” She stopped herself before finishing the thought. “But I’m here. You’re here. Liam’s here. We’re okay.”
Carina studied her for a moment before pressing a soft kiss to Maya’s forehead. “We are.”
There was a comfortable silence between them until Liam stirred slightly, blinking up at them sleepily.
Maya smiled down at him. “Yeah, buddy?”
Liam reached up, touching her cheek with his small fingers.
Maya’s heart clenched at the concern in his tiny voice. She hugged him closer. “I want cuddles too. "
Liam let out a sleepy hum before snuggling back into Carina. “Okay.”
Carina and Maya exchanged a look, both feeling the weight of the past few weeks, but also the comfort of being home together.
Maya placed her hand back on Carina’s stomach, a soft smile on her face. “I think this baby’s going to be just as stubborn as us.”
Carina laughed lightly, running her fingers through Maya’s hair. “That’s not even a question.”
Maya sighed happily, closing her eyes as she let herself relax for the first time in weeks. “I love you, Carina.”
Carina tightened her hold on Maya and Liam. “I love you too, Amore.”
And for the first time in a long time, everything felt right.
