Afraid of thunder

“She wants to what?” Powder exclaimed, her pencil clattering to the floor as she absorbed Vi’s words.

“It’s something about assisted death or some shit like that,” Vi explained, her voice heavy with emotion.

Powder sat in silence for a moment, processing the gravity of the situation. “Powder, I don’t think I can handle this job anymore. I don’t want her to leave,” Vi admitted, her voice cracking.

“Why don’t you try cheering her up?” Powder suggested gently.

“I’ve tried, trust me, I have,” Vi replied, her frustration evident.

Powder moved from her desk to sit beside her sister on the floor. “You know, Vi, sometimes it’s difficult for people like her. She used to be so active, like you said, and now she’s stuck in a chair. It’s a huge change for her. But look, let’s do something to help.”

Powder got up, grabbed her laptop, and handed it to Vi. “I’ll help you research what she can do. We’ll make a list of activities that might interest her, and then you can show it to her parents for approval.”

“Powder, you’ve got tests coming up. I don’t want to distract you,” Vi said.

“I’m top of my class. I’ll be fine. Come on, let’s do this,” Powder insisted

Together, they spent hours into the night, combing through websites, reading articles, and brainstorming ideas. They compiled a comprehensive list of activities and hobbies that Caitlyn could potentially enjoy, considering her physical limitations but also her interests and past experiences.

“Powder, I owe you one,” Vi said the next morning, feeling a surge of gratitude as she left the dorm to head back to the Kiramman house.

“You don’t owe me anything, Vi,” Powder replied, giving her sister a reassuring hug.

Oh her way to the mansion, she passed by a flower shop to buy some flowers for Caitlyn. She took one of the flowers and placed on her pocket.

Armed with the list of ideas, Vi presented them to Tobias and Cassandra. She explained each activity, from adaptive sports to art therapy, hoping to find something that would bring joy and purpose back into Caitlyn’s life.

Tobias and Cassandra listened intently, their faces reflecting both hope and concern. “These are wonderful ideas, Violet,” Tobias said, his voice filled with appreciation.

Cassandra nodded in agreement. “Thank you, Violet.“

Now Vi had a new mission, change Caitlyn’s mind.

Vi quietly pushed open Caitlyn’s door, stepping into the softly lit room with the bouquet of flowers cradled gently in her hands. Caitlyn, who was sitting up in bed, glanced up, and her face brightened with a warm smile.

“Are those for me?” Caitlyn asked, her voice carrying a mix of curiosity and delight as her gaze settled on the colorful blossoms.

Vi returned the smile, her lips curving upward in a way that softened her usual tough demeanor. “Yeah, they’re for you,” she said, stepping closer.

“They’re lovely,” Caitlyn murmured. “You have such good taste, Vi.”

Vi chuckled softly, her cheeks tinged faintly pink at the compliment. “I thought you might like them. And they smell amazing,” she added, bringing the flowers closer to Caitlyn so she could take in their fragrance.

Caitlyn leaned her head forward, closing her eyes as she inhaled deeply. A contented sigh escaped her lips. “Oh, indeed they smell wonderful. Thank you, Violet,” she said warmly, her eyes locking with Vi’s in an unspoken exchange of gratitude and affection.

Vi shrugged lightly, but the corners of her mouth twitched upward. “It’s no problem,” she replied, her voice calm yet laced with a quiet pride as she moved to place the flowers in a vase that was waiting on the bedside table. She carefully arranged them, ensuring each stem stood just right.

“There,” Vi said, stepping back to admire the arrangement. “Perfect spot.”

Caitlyn’s gaze lingered on the flowers for a moment before shifting back to Vi. “You didn’t have to, you know,” she said, her tone soft but teasing. “But I’m really glad you did.”

“Well,” Vi said, scratching the back of her neck, “I figured you deserved something nice. And besides…” Her voice trailed off as she met Caitlyn’s eyes again. “Seeing you smile like that makes it worth it.”

Caitlyn’s smile deepened, her cheeks faintly flushed. “You’re such a softie, Vi,” she teased gently.

“Don’t let it get around,” Vi quipped with a smirk, her tough exterior peeking through for a brief moment before softening again.

The was a knock on the door and Jayce entered. He looked a Vi and nodded. She had previously texted him about the ideas she had and he happily agreed.

“Cait,” Vi called out, her excitement evident in her voice.

“Yeah?” Caitlyn responded.

“We’re taking Jayce to watch motorcycle racing,” Vi announced with a grin.

Caitlyn glanced at Jayce, who looked intrigued. “I’ve never been to one,” he admitted.

“Really Jayce?” Asked Caitlyn. “I’m serious I haven’t” he said.

“Alright, let’s go then,” Caitlyn agreed, a hint of curiosity in her tone.

They made their way to the racing venue, the air buzzing with the energy of the crowd. Vi had managed to secure spots in the VIP section, giving them a perfect view of the track. The roar of the engines filled the air, and the atmosphere was electric with anticipation.

“I’ll go make my bet now,” Vi said, her excitement palpable.

“I’ll bet on number 23,” she declared confidently.

“You’re going to lose,” Caitlyn said with a smirk, her skepticism clear.

“Watch me win,” Vi replied with a playful glint in her eye.

As the race began, the motorcycles zoomed past, the speed and skill of the riders mesmerizing. Caitlyn seemed to be enjoying it more than she had anticipated, her eyes following the action on the track. Jayce, too, was engrossed in the spectacle, the thrill of the race captivating him.

When number 23 crossed the finish line in first place, Vi jumped up in excitement. “Let’s go! What did I tell you?” she exclaimed, her joy infectious.

“Congratulations,” Caitlyn said with a smile, her earlier skepticism replaced with genuine happiness for Vi.

“Alright, let’s go eat. The bill’s on me,” Vi declared, feeling generous.

“How generous,” Jayce joked, giving her a playful nudge.

That night, when Vi arrived home she placed the flower she took from the bouquet she had given Caitlyn into a small cup with water. That way she she could know when to buy her flowers again since she didn’t really spend too much time in Caitlyn’s bedroom.

Next morning, Vi found Caitlyn looking at a pile of papers with a furrowed brow. “That arrived,” Caitlyn said, nodding toward the pile. Among the papers was an ornate invitation. Vi picked it up and saw that it was for Maddie and Morgana’s wedding.

Caitlyn scoffed, her expression filled with disdain. “Ridiculous.”

“Well, are you going?” Vi asked, curious about Caitlyn's feelings.

“Of course I’m not going,” Caitlyn replied, her tone final and firm.

“Well, you can’t say no to this,” Vi said with a grin, pulling out two tickets from her jacket.

“What’s that?” Caitlyn asked.

“It’s the biggest opera concert in Piltover,” Vi announced, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

Caitlyn’s eyes widened in surprise. “What? Jayce hasn’t gone to that either,” she said, clearly intrigued.

“No,” Vi said, shaking her head with a smile. “Its me, I haven’t gone to one.”

“Powder, you gotta help me,” Vi said urgently into the phone, pacing back and forth in her room.

“What did you do now?” her sister replied.

“Me and Caitlyn are going to that opera thingy,” Vi explained.

“Oh, really?” Powder responded, intrigued.

“Yes,” Vi confirmed, nodding even though her sister couldn’t see her.

“And how do I help?” Powder asked, already sensing where this was going.

“Help me wear something elegant,” Vi pleaded, feeling a bit out of her depth when it came to formal attire.

“Alright, on my way,” Powder said, her tone filled with determination.

A short while later, Powder arrived at Vi’s place. “Okay, let’s see what we’re working with,” she said, her eyes scanning Vi’s wardrobe.

“Nope we’re going shopping” said Powder.

Vi entered the Kiramman house, her eyes immediately drawn to Caitlyn, who stood in the center of the room wearing a breathtaking evening gown. The dress was long and elegant, primarily black, and featured a fitted silhouette that extended all the way to Caitlyn’s feet. The top part of the dress was a halter neck design with thin straps that crossed over her chest, highlighting her graceful shoulders. The outfit was completed with long, black gloves that extended above the elbows.

“Woah,” Vi said, her eyes sparkling at the sight of Caitlyn. “You look… beautiful,” she added, her voice filled with genuine admiration.

“Thank you, Violet. You too look pretty handsome too,” Caitlyn replied with a smile, her eyes taking in Vi’s appearance.

Vi was dressed in a light beige trench coat worn over a black turtleneck sweater. The trench coat was a double-breasted design with sleek black buttons, and the sleeves had adjustable straps at the cuffs and a small white flower pinned on the left side. The black turtleneck sweater was tucked into a pair of black trousers, which were held up by a black belt with a silver buckle. She completed the outfit with a pair of dark brown leather shoes.

“Is that for me?” Asked Caitlyn

Vi looked at her hand that’s was holding a small white flower. “Uh yes it’s for you. May I?”

Caitlyn nodded and Vi gently placed the small flower on Caitlyn’s ear.
“Shall we go?” Caitlyn asked.

“Absolutely,” Vi replied, her heart pounding with excitement.

The drive to the opera house was filled with a sense of anticipation. The city lights twinkled outside the car windows, creating a magical atmosphere. Vi glanced over at Caitlyn, who seemed more relaxed and content than she had seen her in a long time.

Upon arriving at the opera house, they were greeted by the grandeur of the building’s architecture, its majestic façade illuminated against the night sky. The entrance was bustling with elegantly dressed attendees, and the air was filled with the hum of excitement.

Vi escorted Caitlyn through the grand foyer, where chandeliers sparkled above and marble floors gleamed below. They were shown to their seats in the VIP section.

Once all set up the orchestra started playing startling Vi. “Wow that’s loud” said Vi, making Caitlyn laugh.

After a few minutes, Vi started to get bored and eventually felt her eyes grow heavy. She leaned her head against Caitlyn’s shoulder, the warmth and steady rhythm of her breathing soothing her into a deep, comfortable sleep.

Caitlyn glanced down at Vi, a fond smile playing on her lips.

As the final act approached its crescendo, the music swelled to a dramatic high note, jolting Vi awake. She blinked groggily, looking around in confusion, trying to piece together where she was. “Vi,” Caitlyn whispered softly, careful not to disturb the other patrons.

“Huh, what?” Vi murmured, her voice thick with sleep. “Did I fall asleep?” She asked embarrassed.

“Yes, you did,” Caitlyn replied with a chuckle, “which impressed me because the opera was very loud. But you looked so peaceful, I didn't have the heart to wake you.”

Vi rubbed her eyes, a sheepish smile spreading across her face. “Guess I needed it,” she admitted. “Thanks for being my pillow, cupcake” Caitlyn just laughed softly. “Cupcake?” “Yes cupcake” Vi smiled. “Why?” Asked Caitlyn. “Because you’re sweet like a cupcake.” Caitlyn smiled at the silly nickname.

Driving back home, Caitlyn glanced at Vi and spoke softly, “Vi, can we not go home yet?”

Vi raised an eyebrow and asked, “Well, where do you want to go?”

“I want to see the stars,” Caitlyn said, her voice filled with longing. “Haven’t seen them in a while now.”

“Yeah sure, to the park?” Vi suggested, turning the steering wheel in the direction of the park.

“No, to the beach,” Caitlyn said with a smile.

Vi nodded, her own smile widening. “The beach it is.” She drove to the beach that wasn’t far from home, the city lights gradually fading into the background as they neared the coast.

Once at the beach, Vi carefully helped Caitlyn out of the car. They headed to a small bench and sat together, the sound of the waves crashing softly against the shore creating a soothing symphony.

“I love the salty smell of the air,” Caitlyn said, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. The scent of the ocean filled her senses, bringing a sense of calm and contentment.

“Yeah, it’s pretty nice,” Vi agreed, glancing over at Caitlyn. She noticed Caitlyn’s hand shiver a bit in the cool night air. Without a second thought, Vi removed her jacket and draped it over Caitlyn’s shoulders.

“You know I can’t-” “that you can’t feel anything from the neck down” Vi interrupted. “Still it’s cold.” Said Vi. Caitlyn didn’t argue back.

“Thank you,” Caitlyn said, her voice filled with gratitude.

“No problem,” Vi replied with a warm smile.

“We should get going, it’s getting late and kinda cloudy. Looks like it will rain,” Vi said, getting up from the bench.

“Alright, let’s go,” Caitlyn replied. Once they arrived home, Vi carried Caitlyn to the bathroom to change her clothes.

“I’ll get Lara,” Vi offered.

“She’s not home,” Caitlyn replied.

“What do you mean?” Vi asked, puzzled.

“She told me before we left for the opera that she had an emergency,” Caitlyn explained.

“Well, do I get your mom?” Vi asked.

“She’s probably asleep. It’s pretty late,” Caitlyn said.

“Does that mean that I...?” Vi asked, rubbing her hands together nervously.

“Yes, I’m sorry,” Caitlyn admitted.

“Alright, no, it’s okay. I’ll get your pajamas,” Vi said, heading out to fetch Caitlyn’s pajamas.

Vi returned to the bathroom with Caitlyn’s pajamas. “Alright, so the dress,” she said.

“Yes, Vi, the dress,” Caitlyn confirmed.

Vi carefully removed Caitlyn’s dress and was taken aback by the scars she saw on her body. A bad-looking bullet scar marred Caitlyn’s left thigh.

Caitlyn caught Vi looking at her scar. “I was shot during a mission. But I managed to kill him,” Caitlyn said with a smirk. This made Vi smile.

“Alright, I’m going to move you a bit for the shirt,” Vi said, slowly moving Caitlyn to put on her shirt. As she did, she saw Caitlyn's back. It was covered in marks from an explosion and the ceiling falling on her. She could see the area where Caitlyn's spinal cord had been damaged, likely from multiple surgeries. Vi decided to look away and not think about it.

Once Caitlyn was dressed, Vi took some wipes to clean her makeup. “May I?” she asked.

Caitlyn nodded, and Vi proceeded to take Caitlyn’s chin for support while removing her makeup. Afterward, she brushed Caitlyn's teeth and carried her to bed. By then, it had started raining outside.

“Could you close the curtains, please?” Caitlyn asked.

Vi did as she was told and closed the window curtains. “Alright, good night, Cait,” Vi said, walking away.

“Where do you think you’re going?” Caitlyn asked.

“Uh, home?” Vi replied, uncertain.

“Vi, do you see how bad it’s raining?”

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry,” Vi assured her.

“No, you’ll stay,” Caitlyn insisted.

“But—”

“But nothing,” Caitlyn interrupted.

“Alright, fine,” Vi said, taking a seat on a chair.

Vi saw the look on Caitlyn’s face about to protest for sleeping on the chair but Vi was faster “don’t worry if I get uncomfortable I’ll lay on the bed.” With that Caitlyn closed her eyes.

After a few minutes, Caitlyn fell asleep, and Vi did too. She woke up to Caitlyn having difficulty breathing and crying. Vi got up from her chair to check on Caitlyn.

“Caitlyn! Caitlyn, wake up!” Vi said, trying to rouse her.

Caitlyn woke up, but her breathing did not settle. “Panic attack?” Vi asked.

Caitlyn nodded.

“Alright, try to breathe. I’ll be right back,” Vi said, getting up and running outside Caitlyn’s room to get her panic attack medication. She was still half asleep and tripped over one of her shoes. Vi fell and hit her head on the side of a table. She cursed but got up to get Caitlyn’s medicine.

Vi returned with the medication and water, helping Caitlyn take her pill. Her breathing settled after a few minutes. However, a loud thunderclap made Caitlyn start breathing heavily again. Vi noticed her fear of the thunder.

Without really thinking, Vi hugged her. She placed Caitlyn’s head on her chest and her hand over Caitlyn's ear. With her other hand, she held Caitlyn’s shoulder and rested her chin on Caitlyn's head. Caitlyn calmed down, and the medicine made her fall asleep in Vi’s arms. Vi stayed there, keeping Caitlyn safe through the storm.

The rain continued to pour outside, Vi watched as Caitlyn’s breathing grew steadier, her face relaxing into a peaceful slumber. She stroked Caitlyn’s hair softly, whispering reassurances.

As the hours passed, the storm outside began to wane, but Vi remained vigilant. She couldn’t bear the thought of leaving Caitlyn’s side.

Morning light began to creep through the curtains, casting a soft glow over the room. Vi gently laid Caitlyn down on the bed and stretched her tired limbs.

Caitlyn stirred and slowly opened her eyes. “Hey,” she whispered, her voice still heavy with sleep.

“Hey, how are you feeling?” Vi asked, concern and warmth in her voice.

“Better, thanks to you,” Caitlyn replied.

“You know I’ll always be here for you, right?” Vi said.

“I know,” Caitlyn said, a small smile forming on her lips.

“What happened to your head?” Caitlyn asked, her concern evident in her voice.

“Oh, I accidentally tripped last night while getting the medication,” Vi replied casually.

“Violet, go look in the mirror,” Caitlyn said firmly.

Vi headed towards the mirror in Caitlyn’s room and gasped when she saw a large purple mark with a small cut on her eyebrow.

“You need to get that checked out,” Caitlyn insisted.

“I’ll be fine, don’t worry,” Vi reassured her. At that moment, Jayce knocked on the door and entered.

“Hey sprout, I got you th—oh, what happened to your face?” Jayce asked, looking at Vi with concern.

“I’m fine, don’t worry,” Vi repeated.

“Jayce, could you please call my father?” Caitlyn asked.

“Cait, no,” Vi interjected.

“Jayce, please,” Caitlyn insisted.

“Yeah, sure,” Jayce said, and a few minutes later, Tobias entered the room.

“You wanted to see me?” Tobias asked.

“Yes, Father, could you please check Violet? She tripped and fell last night,” Caitlyn explained.

Tobias looked at Vi’s injury and frowned. “Oh, you’re right, Caitlyn, Violet, that doesn’t look good. Let me take a look.”

After examining her, Tobias said, “You’ll need to rest. Get the day off. Go home and here,” he handed Vi some medicine, “this is for any pain. If you feel this doesn’t work, or if you experience any discomfort or dizziness, come back and I’ll check you in at my hospital.”

Vi nodded, grateful for his help. “Thank you, Mr. Kiramman.”

She waved goodbye and headed home.
