The School of Hard Knocks!

Amidst the fog, it was possible to see four people with Pokémon walking while two of them argued.

"I'm not letting you out of my sight, Ash Ketchum, until you pay for my broken bike!" Misty snapped at Ash.

""My bike, my bike!" That's all you can say!" Ash replied.

"Right! I may seem like a confused person, but I know very well what you owe me and you're not going to get away with it without paying it!" She continued.

"Maybe if you spent less time arguing and paid more attention to where we're going, we'd already be in Vermilion City by now, come on guys, we're already late!" Brock interrupted them.

"And if you don't stop talking, I'll make you shut up!" Harry narrowed his eyes at the two as energy crackled around him.

"I wouldn't mind if you shut me up." Ash replied in an instant and when he realized what he said, he turned red and stammered an apology.

"Soft Ash, too soft." Misty scoffed and Harry gave her a quick look that made them both stop before they started another argument.

"I deserve it..." Harry sighed as Brock stopped in a clearing.

"I'm going to make us something to eat, but I'll need firewood for a fire, can one of you go get it?" Brock asked as he pulled several things out of his backpack.

"No need." Harry replied and snapped his fingers causing a small ball of fire to appear on the ground in a way that would be perfect for placing a pan.

"Cool!" Ash exclaimed excitedly. "But that seems like exploitation, so I'm going to go look for firewood."

"Okay, but be careful, okay?" Harry smiled softly at Ash.

"Sir, yes sir!" He gave a playful salute and left.

While Ash went to look for firewood, Harry and Misty were helping Brock with the rest.

When it took too long for Ash to return they decided to go after him and found him arguing with some boys in school uniforms.

"But if they're producing students like you, I must say that the standards are pretty low!" They could hear Ash say.

"That's right, Ash, be tough!" Misty said as she walked in front.

"Misty?" Ash said in surprise.

"You better stop messing with this kid or you'll have to deal with us! Right?" She exclaimed.

"Misty, don't get involved in this, leave everything to me." He said and Harry shook his head.

"You're right, Ash, there's no reason for all of us to get into a fight, it's very brave of you to face five alone! We'll stay here on the sidelines, cheering you on and waiting to drag your carcass in the end." She said giving him an ironic smile and Ash then realized his situation.

"We don't fight." One of them said with an arrogant smile.

"Fighting is for cavemen, we're not in the stone age." Another said with the same smile.

"And if we waste our time fighting with a bug like you, it would look really bad for TechPokémon." Another one of them said, irritating Harry immensely.

"We'll meet at Tech, Joe." The first one said to the boy who was apparently being bullied.

"Come back here you cowards!" Ash said irritably.

"The only thing we're afraid of is beating up a little bum like you too much." And they left.

"So these are the TechPokémon students..." Brock said, still mixing the dough he was working with.

"TechPokémon?" Ash asked.

"TechPokémon, a school for Pokémon trainers." Misty informed. "I have a flyer here somewhere." She said, rummaging through her pockets until she found the flyer.

"A Pokémon school at the end of the world?" Ash asked skeptically.

"Let's see what this says." Brock said, picking up the flyer. "'Pokémon Technical Institute. A boarding school for serious Pokémon training preparation, we ensure that all trainers enter the Pokémon League upon graduation. The Pokémon School is an educational institution for exceptional students who want to become Pokémon Trainers in a very short period of time, without having to travel on difficult journeys to collect badges.' So that's how it works!" Brock says reading the pamphlet.

"Entering the Pokémon League without badges is very easy." Ash says irritably.

"What's more, the tuition fees are on par with the highest standards set by the Pokémon Technical School." Brock says looking at the values that Harry looks over his shoulder.

"You know what that means? It's one of those snooty private schools that only millionaire students attend!" Misty says to Ash.

"Don't give it so much credit Misty." Harry says boredly getting everyone's attention. "This is just a school with pathetic results and even more pathetic students who have a foolish delusion that their particularly mediocre fortunes have any real influence on the world." Harry said dismissively.

"Wow, he looks every inch the noble, rich boy he is." Ash whispered to Misty.

"Sometimes I forget that too." She whispered back.

"What are you two whispering about?" Harry twitches an eye in irritation as he hears the two.

"NOTHING!" They both exclaim together, fearing too much for their lives, having a vivid memory of the red-haired boy blowing up a rock a few days ago.

"Today's special class on fog battle techniques is over! Tomorrow's class will be 'The Secrets of Snow Competition.'"

"Oh my god, I think they're going to turn me into the snowman again tomorrow." Joe says sadly.

"Do they treat you like this all the time?" Ash asks in surprise.

"My friends are just trying to help." Joe says calmly.

"You call that a friend?" Ash asks in shock.

"With friends like that, who needs enemies?"

With a little conversation they learn that Joe pretends not to know all the answers so that he'll only get asked even harder questions.

"My parents saved up a lot of money so I could come to this school." Joe tells them.

"Hmm, I forgot that poor people can't afford it." Harry says without thinking and makes everyone sweat with that.

"The classes here are really hard." Joe informs. "The freshman classes here are really hard."

"You're a freshman?" Ash asks.

"Yes, the freshmen have the same qualifications as someone with two badges, the intermediate class has the qualifications of four and the advanced students have the equivalent of six. If you graduate you can enter the Pokémon League without traveling around collecting badges."

"Well I want to meet the student responsible for this, let's see how capable they really are!" Ash says indignantly.

"Here's the picture." Joe pulls a picture out of his jacket. Showing a picture of a girl.

"Wow, you carry her picture around, stalker." Harry says making Joe stutter.

"If she treats you badly why do you carry a picture of her around?" Misty asks.

"I hate how she treats us, but she's really pretty." Joe explains.

"Meh, not even close to the prettiest person I've ever seen." Ash says disinterestedly looking at the girl's picture.

"How can you say that?" Joe asks in shock.

"I travel with him." Ash points at Harry with his thumb. "There's hardly anyone who looks better than that face."

Harry winks at Ash, making him blush.

Misty raises her eyebrows and looks at Ash in surprise. "Wow, when did you start having a good game?"

"I don't know what you're talking about, I've always been that natural." Ash says evasively. Everyone looks at him blankly. "Well, you'd go on the attack too if you saw the competition!"

"Competition?" Misty and Brock ask.

"Some guy from Galar who sent a picture of his defined abs." Ash grumbles.

"That would be Raihan, he sends one of those at least three times a week." Harry shrugs, pulling out the Rotomphone and showing the picture to Misty, who was curious.

"Wow! Now I understand the change in attitude, those are some serious abs!" Misty says in surprise and teasing Ash.

"I'M AWARE, THANK YOU SO MUCH!" Ash responds irritably.

"Well anyway, I'm going to find that little witch and deal with her!" Misty exclaims and starts walking towards the school.

"This is getting exciting!" Harry says, jumping up and down.

Walking through the school, they end up inside a room full of computers and a battlefield.

"Gisele comes here to train alone, even if she loses a fight, she doesn't care, at Tech, your skill as a Pokémon trainer is what matters, it counts more than winning any battle." Joe tells them.

"That's what I expected, I myself have two badges." Ash says, showing his badges.

"But Gisele is the best beginner here at Pokémon Tech, that's better than having three badges, even though I'm the worst student in the class, I have more power than someone who has two badges." Joe says condescendingly.

"Hey, wait a minute, kid!" Misty says, going forward. "I learned to be a trainer at the Cerulean City gym, do you think you can beat me?" She says irritably.

"Oh, Cerulean City, water Pokémon, I always beat them in the simulator, you know?" He says, showing something that he hastily took from a game.

"But what is this? Simulation is one thing, but this is real life! Let's fight and I'll show you the reality!" Misty says furiously and Harry frowns at the whole situation, he hates this school.

"Okay, if you insist."

With that they head to the battlefield on the side of the room.

"Let's do this! Misty calls Starmie!"

"Too bad your Pokémon won't be able to beat my plant, Weepinbell, let's go!"

Soon the two Pokémon are out and with a command Starmie sends the grass Pokémon away, surprising Joe.

"But Weepinbell is strong against a water Pokémon!" He says in shock.

"That's true, but there's one thing you didn't know." A female voice comes from behind him and they turn to see Gisele. "Your opponent is from the Cerulean City gym, the Pokémon has much more fighting experience, you should know that, you are a disgrace to the entire school."

"Meh, I still don't see her appeal." Ash says tilting his head in confusion.

"You've been vaccinated, dear." Harry says softly and leans in close to Ash, which makes the brunette blush. "Keep it up and you'll be rewarded." Harry blows in his ear making him shiver.

"I'm the best student at the most special prep school in the world, TechPokémon. It's sad that others don't have the blessing of my beauty, my talent and my humility. People call me a star, but I'm just Gisele." She says striking a pose.

"Arceus, you're pathetic!" Harry bursts out laughing. "The most special prep school in the world? They call you a star? Ha, spare me, my dear, if you were a star you'd be a shooting star, just a piece of burning rock that someone might notice, but that disappears into nothing soon after." Harry mocks her.

"What?!?" She shouts indignantly.

"You heard me, this pathetic school and you are on the same level of mediocrity. You shouldn't think so highly of yourself for a failed school that never made a real name for itself!"

"How dare you?!? Who do you think you are?"

"A trainer who is hundreds of times better than you!"

"Then I challenge you to a battle!" She shouts at him.

"With pleasure!" Harry grins savagely.

"He's going to kill her...right?" Ash to his friends.

"Oh, yes, he's going to finish her off!" Misty gushes with glee.

Soon both are on each side of the battlefield, but for a moment Harry looks out the window, focused on the tree outside, his eyes quickly glow and the tree disappears with anyone on top of it.

"I'll go first then! Graveler, go!"

Then a large Pokémon with four arms and shaped like a ball made of rocks appears.

"Graveler, okay, this will be easy, Sylveon, on stage!" Harry throws his Pokéball releasing his Pokémon.

"Syl!" Sylveon appears on the field drawing attention.

"What Pokémon is that?" Gisele asks in shock.

"Wow, it says it's the best school in the world but you don't know a Sylveon?" Harry scoffs, making her angry.

"Whatever, no matter how cute it is, I'll win easily! Graveler, Rollout!"

"Sylveon, like you did with Geodude!" Harry calls out the command.

Sylveon quickly launches its capture ribbons and traps the Pokémon, then charges and fires a powerful Magic Leaf. Soon the cloud caused by the impact disappears revealing an unconscious Graveler.

"How is this possible?" Gisele exclaims in shock.

"You are an unprepared, arrogant, reckless brat and, on top of everything, rotten inside." Harry says coldly. "Someone like you will never be a real trainer, none of these students will be." Harry says turning around and walking away. "Let's get out of this place, this is a waste of time." He tells his friends who agree and walk away.

"Wait!" She shouts making him stop. "Who are you?" She asks.

"I...? I am Harry Blackthorn, full member of the Blackthorn Ancestral Clan in Johto, Master of Dragon, Fairy, Dark and Steel Pokémon; Leader of the Laverre City Gym." He says as he turns to look at her.

In the end, it drastically changed something inside Gisele and Joe, and without knowing it, Harry helped shape her into someone who would later become a trainer worthy of being proud of.

That day, she vowed that one day she would be able to impress Harry Blackthorn.
